Cool little pub /restaurant near Pier One in Astoria, OR. Upon return from a bike packing trip, hit Portway Tavern for lunch before heading out of town. Ambience - small tavern with seaside vibe with both indoor bar and table seating as well as some limited outdoor table seating. As a party of one, I elected to sit indoors at the end of the bar. As it's located on HWY30 at Portway, I imagine sitting outside could be a little noisy at times. Service - prompt and very friendly. Seemed like the sole bartender was the sole waitress as well...but she was very attentive nonetheless equally dividing her attention to a full house of customers! There appeared to be 1-2 short order cooks in the back...so small crew to handle the lunch crowd. Food - clam chowder, fish and chips, and a cider...a reoccurring meal of mine when traveling through the PNW and kinda how I like to judge one place from another. Thick NE-style clam chowder loaded with clams! Solid contender and some of the better chowder I've had as of late. The F&Cs were 3, 2-3oz sized halibut pieces fried golden brown with a huge side of string fries...also very crispy! With some lemon and malt vinegar on the fish and a refreshing cider on tap, it all went down quite well...yum! Price was reasonable, although maybe a little pricy given this was the industrial side of the riverwalk. Nonetheless, the food/drink, service, and ambience were all good! Felt his was more of a local hangout for those working at the marina as compared to, say... Astoria Brewing... a definite touristy alternative that's larger, busier, and smack dab on the riverwalk. Both are solid places offering different vibes. Definitely will be back here as well! Cheers! read more

Portway Tavern has the best clam chowder in Astoria, as far as I'm concerned! I recently did a chowder crawl through Astoria, trying chowder at 10 different restaurants, and Portway came out on top for every person in our group. It's a classic clam chowder, but incredibly flavorful, rich, and creamy. It has big chunks of clam, bacon, and some potato, but unlike many chowders, the clam-to-filler ratio is definitely heavy on the clam. It is simply outstanding. The staff are every bit as impressive as the food. I drove an hour back tonight specifically for their chowder and planned to try the fish and chips as well, only to discover that the power was out and wasn't expected to return until much later. I was obviously disappointed and mentioned how far I had driven. The staff were so kind that they gave me a bowl of chowder to take home and heat up later--on the house! That level of kindness and customer service is rare. We need more restaurants like Portway Tavern. Amazing chowder, wonderful people, and a place I will happily keep coming back to! We had a great meal at the Portway Tavern last night! Honestly, we'd been to the Portway multiple times, but yesterday the food was really good. My wife had the Jamaican burger. Grilled pineapple, hand made burger, tasty. The waffle fries were great. The only negative is that the burger could have been seasoned more. I had the Tri-tip Sandwich with some onion rings. Really good, but again, a little seasoning would have augmented the sandwich. Service was good, but not as good as the food. Seemed a little understaffed for 5:30 PM. I'm not a drinker, so I can't speak to the drinks. But the food? Oh yeah. The burgers here are insanely good. The best burgers in Astoria hands down. They have a Jamaican burger with pineapple (seems weird, I know, but trust me) and spicy sauce that's incredible. The Tri-tip sandwich, on a hoagie roll, is also really delicious. They have great waffle fries too, sprinkled with magically delicious spicy dust. You should go here. The bar is over 100 years old. It's an institution. It's got a neighborhood bar vibe because, well, that's what it is. Bartender is also your waitress, and she's super friendly and super fast and super efficient. So tip her well. read more

A group of us stopped into Portway Tavern for lunch while visiting Oregon. Plenty of free parking can be found in the gravel parking lot in back. Discover is an accepted form of payment. Oregon lottery can be found in Portway Tavern so my crowd enjoyed the slot games onsite while drinking and visiting one another. Portway Tavern has outdoor seating with sun umbrellas to enjoy on nice days. Table service is not offered. Orders are placed, picked-up and paid for at the counter. Happy Hour is offered Mon-Fri from 3pm-6pm. A full bar ensures that everyone is happy. Late night menu is available Sun-Mon from 8pm-close, Tues-Thurs from 10pm-close and Fri-Sat from 11pm-close. Food menu is standard bar food. While looking over the menu my wife had a Bud Light for $4 and I had a 10 Barrel IPA for $5.25. For lunch, my wife and I shared the Grilled Blackened Chicken Sandwich for $14.75: 6oz chicken breast, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion and mayo. Instead of fries, we opted for a Garden Salad for $6: mixed greens, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onion and croutons. Staff was welcoming. Prices are fair. Food is tasty. A no frills place for a good burger and a beer. The service was good and the bartender was friendly. Don't let the vibe around the area scare you off. Seems a bit dumpy and industrial at the location, but there were all kinds of folk inside, both local and tourists. They gave me the largest veteran's discount I think I've ever received, anywhere! read more

She had a full bar and still came to our table and apologized for taking a little longer to get to us. You think this is a dive bar, but the food is great especially the clam chowder. It looks like a New England saltbox house from outside, but it's a tavern, or a bar. It's got a sign saying no minors, there's a long bar for seating but also tables. I was here because the clam chowder was supposed to be good, and it was. Very thick, more than the usual potato but also lots of chewy clam. To go with it I had a burger, varieties of which occupy most of the rest of the menu. It was a good solid burger: I got the western bbq with onion rings on it. read more

You will not be disappointed choosing Portway Tavern it is a solid choice. We stopped by on a Sunday around noon on a chowder quest. The tavern is tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable. We chose to sit at the bar. The bartender Krissy was really sweet and helpful. She suggested I try the drink of the day which was a Shamrock Mimosa. It was delicious and the garnish was St Patty's Day festive. For food she said they are known for their clam chowder, Burgers and Fish and Chips. We chose clam chowder and a Jalapeño Burger. The New England style Clam Chowder is creamy and thick like you're sipping a gravy with tender chunks of potatoes that almost feel like it melts in your month. I loved the contrasting flavor of the saltiness and smokiness of the bacon and the fading bitterness of fresh "oceany" clams. Our cup of deliciousness came with a piece of garlic toast upon request. Perfect for dipping. My ultimate favorite chowder is a west coast style from Hog Island Oyster Company in San Francisco . Served with fresh clams (shell and all) over a fresh creamy potato' base. Portway's clam chowder is delicious as promised. I now have a new favorite "New England style". The Jalapeño burger was delicious as well. Fresh, perfectly seasoned and cooked 80/20 burger patty dressed with pickled jalapeños, tillamook cheddar, red onion, tomato, leaf lettuce and a secret sauce that reminded me of chipotle flavored cream cheese. I was happy the pub bun held this juicy burger together. Holy smokes it was tasty. We will be back that chowder and burger for sure. read more

A hidden gem! We had the halibut fish and chips, and the clam chowder. The halibut was succulent, cooked to perfection, with a wonderful dill tartar sauce, accompanied by a sweet slaw - delicious! The clam chowder was full of tender clams and melt-in-your- mouth bits of potatoes. We didn't order drinks but their full-service bar was clearly well stocked, cocktails, wine, beer - your choice. Went here because I had read reviews of god clam chowder. That is NOT the case. After ordering, we waited 25 minutes for a bowl of chowder that was lukewarm and nothing to rave about. I would not have been surprise if it came from a microwaved can of Campbells. Very disappointed! read more

This is a great historic pub just down the street from downtown in Uniontown. There's a parking lot around the back. Staff was delightful. I got the crab roll special: $17.75 for what seemed like 2lbs of crab! The fries seemed to be battered or double fried and were piping hot. This place is a gem. read more
