Big Mike's Fish & Chicken - Great Catfish, No Frills I've been to quite a few fried fish spots around the area, usually grabbing something while I'm out working. Fried catfish with lemon pepper is my go-to, so I've tried a lot of places. First off, I'm not going to judge the look of the place -- most fried fish spots aren't exactly known for their interior design, and that's not really why you're there anyway. What matters is the food, and the catfish here was phenomenal. The fish was fresh, perfectly fried, and the lemon pepper seasoning was spot-on. I had actually stopped at two other fried fish places the previous two days, and this one was noticeably better. The catfish was packed with flavor and cooked exactly how it should be -- crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The guy running the place was also very nice and professional, which always makes the experience better. I ordered the 20 piece large shrimp fries and 2 pieces of fish meal. The lady in front of me told them to burn hers and I guess the 2 kids he had working in there got confused cus they burned up my order. Shrimp was small and hard. Fries were ok but not great. The 2 pieces of fish I got were cod. Now mind you I am in a fish market. Everything looked like it came from a frozen food box. The cod was for sure from a box. I called as soon as I got home and it was clear that the kids had told him because there was no argument. He knew it was bad and tells me to come in he will replace it. Fast forward about a week i go in to get it and he is like how many of the shrimp were burnt and and starts treating me like I am trying to scam him instead of HIS store ruining the main portion of the meal and everything else being barely edible. Not only will I not be going back but the guy pissed me off so much that I said keep your food I don't want it and walked out which is what i think the cheap jerk wanted anyway. This is not fresh fish as being in a fish market would imply. I've been coming here for the better part of 5 or so years! Feels shameful to have waited this long to leave a review. Every experience has been amazing! The food quality is always fresh and THE SEASONING... Its like legal crack im telling you. The reviews on the overall entire location, not just the quality of the food. The food is very tasty and they do a good job the problem is when you walk in and you're standing around waiting for your food you notice how filthy the building is. With that being said the entire 15 minute time frame I was waiting for my food the two employees or owners or whoever they are did nothing but argue back-and-forth and yell at each other in their native language. Walked in and there was no customers and I placed my order and they told me only 10 to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes 6 people came in and placed orders and I came in and my one order was done but not my other order. I was told 10 minutes again after 6 people placed there and they got they're food and left it was 45 to 50 minutes later for something that took only 10 minutes to cook. I wouldn't even gave this establishment a one star if I had the opportunity. I usually go to Sea World Fish and Chicken in Detroit, Gratiot Avenue. I was traveling down 9 mile and spotted Mike's. I ordered a #7 which is 2 pieces Pickerel, Shrimps, fries and I ordered an extra piece of Pickerel fish which was $2.79. In the waiting area a man came in to pick-up is order and asked for extra condiments because of purchasing a large order. The young-man told the customer no, right then I got a bad vibe but went on to wait for my order. My order came up looked at my order and it looked ok because the fish was on top. Driving home in the car and proceeded to just sample the food. I noticed my fish was small in size because instead of giving me 3 whole pieces of fish this establishment cut one whole fish into 3 pieces and charge me full price. I could see where the fish was cut. (Who does that?) The shrimps were fried hard and the batter was awful. The fries were very greasy and later that night it made my husband extremely sick. I paid $18 for the meal and would of paid less at Sea World with bigger pieces of fish. Trust and believe I want to go back and get a refund but I feel that I can do better by not patronize Mike's Fish and Chicken on 9 mile and Van Dyke ever again. I will follow my first mind next time and stick with my old and faithful Sea World on Gratiot Ave. where they even sale homemade Kool-aids!! God bless!! read more

We bought the family meal. Wanted to try everything thing. So here's a review The Chicken is pretty Good HUSH Puppy's are not to bad The Shrimp is ok The Fish, is NOT good - lots of bones, and does not taste fresh. I would have to say most of their menu is probably frozen goods. Needless to say we probably won't go back and if we do the chicken is all we will buy. So hubby was buggin me to go here so we did today. Looked clean ,staff was very friendly . I ordered jumbo shrimp, catfish, perch, clams, mushrooms, onion rings , coleslaw. $60 not impressed shrimp were just ok, bones in the fish, I haven't had perch in a long time but I don't remember it tasting like that. White Castle has better clams, 'shrooms and onion rings just ok and the coleslaw was like from a grocery store deli. Disappointed was hoping for at least good. Sadly everything tasted the same. What a Big mistake.The fries were soggy greasy, the shrimp batter was also greasy, the perch batter tasted strange, definitely not lake perch, the menu said perch. A hint to the cook, make sure your oil temperature is 350 degrees before you drop the food in to prevent greasy food. Fresh fish? More like everything on the menu is frozen thawed. It seems inexplicably difficult to find decent fish and chips in the metro Detroit area. Big Mike's has a respectable offering of both fish and chips as well as a number of other deep-fried goodies. They have an astonishing variety of fish available. The yellow cake with chocolate frosting is also unexpectedly tasty. If you're in the mood for something deep-fried and straightforward, this is definitely the place to come. read more
