I'm updating my review after someone ordered catering through Mr Fish for a party that I attended. The fish was a huge hit. Everyone was a fan. The fish tasted delicious and well seasoned, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. There were large pieces as well. It reminded me of my first visit to Mr Fish which was a good experience. It's just a shame that portion sizes have decreased. I would prefer to buy fish by the piece or pound rather than a small dinner entree. Because of the excellent catering experience, I will give Mr Fish another chance. read more

I was eager to try Mr. Fish on Vernor in Elmwood Park because I always see a lot of cars in the parking lot and assumed the food would be great. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. The fish was extremely greasy, to the point that the grease felt like it was sticking in my throat. The fried scallops were very hard and over cooked... the whiting fish was also overcooked and itself was flavorless, and the oil tasted old and over-used. Instead of a light, crispy fry, it felt heavy and unpleasant. The seasoning was also lacking, it didn't do anything to make up for the bland taste. Good variety. Most of the fish options aren't the healthiest but a lot of exotic names. I asked chat GPT before ordering. I do enjoy they can make anything into a sandwich. Southern tradition. I've only had the shrimp. They are about $13.99 a pound, which is comparable to Kroger retail. However, the shrimp are delish!!!! Almost lobster-like. Take home, add cilantro lime rice & veggies = mwah! read more

9.5/10 they have great food. Only one time I had an issue with my order. I ordered a whole piece of fish and it was cut into nuggets. No biggy took it back and they corrected my order. Sometimes they are friendly most times they are busy so just order and move along lol read more

I ordered white fish and they gave me bass but it was delicious. I ordered bass and they gave me some other fish it wasn't bass because bass has a lot of bones. I know my fish but I wasn't going to argue with them. I have been going to Mr Fish for many years. I will not be returning because some staff is unclean. I witnessed one employee urinating outside. I also saw an employee smoking outside and then went back inside to work without washing his hands. The food was good however not so good that staff shouldn't wash their hands. Love the music playing while waiting to be served. Thank you old customer. Management needs to ensure staff washes their hands when returning from outside. I have enjoyed this place since 2008. It's 2022, new management and new breading on the whiting fish. I'm not as satisfied as I used to be. The breading has changed. It used to stay crispy, even through the 30 minute car ride in styrofoam and bags or over night in the fridge when you sneak a piece without heating. It was low grade crispy after all that. I'm not as excited about the texture after all these years. Customer service still good. I'm a texture person when it comes to fried fish. Others may like the softer texture, but I don't! So, don't you hate when you blow 20 bucks on food that's garbage. Fish was hard as a brick, dry, and flavorless. Some folks at my job frequent the place from time to time. I wanted fried fish for lunch, and Mr. Fish was recommended. I had the orange roughy dinner plate. The fish was very good and cooked perfectly. The fries and coleslaw were also very good. I believe I had four large pieces of the orange roughy in the dinner plate. This was a very filling meal. I will definitely return to Mr. Fish. read more

Nice, friendly, clean neighborhood fish market. I phoned my order in on the way home from work. Having never visited Mr. Fish, I was not aware of the expanse of their menu, so I stuck with two familiars, that every fish joint is sure to have: one each catfish and whiting dinners, served with fries and hot sauce. Both were tasty, although the whiting tasted a bit stronger than I expected. The fish was some of the freshest i have had here in Detroit so far, from the smaller establishments. So that you are aware, this is a full retail fresh fish market, that sells pretty much everything you could need. I will definitely be back whether I am preparing myself at home, or in the mood to let someone else do the cooking. read more

This review would have been five stars before the recent management change, but I am a bit disappointed in the perch sandwiches that I ordered last week. The filets are smaller, not as crispy, and not quite as fresh tasting as in the past. The previous reviews were true about this restaurant maybe 1 year or so, but not now. I have been coming here since they opened and let me tell you, their food has really changed for the worse. The shrimp is very salty now. They have altered the batter in some way. I don't know what they have done to the batter but its not good and the shrimp has an after taste. The coleslaw was dry and tasteless but the fish was ok. Also the service... The men that are taking the orders via phone and at the counter are extremely rude and unprofessional. I just ordered from work, after I placed my order I said thank you and the guy says, "yep" and hung up. They are very offensive with inappropriate comments as soon as we walk thru the door. The food is great. It's the rude ass employees I can't stand. Being new to Michigan I was told about this place and being from an area where buy and fry is normal I had to check em out. Every time I go in there they are rude, and always overlook my order, the two gents are only nice to females they are gawking , old people, locals, if you look like and outsider. Mr. FISH is an old school style fish joint that gives you just what you want at a good price. I ordered the whiting sandwich which had at least 6 pieces of delicious fish. And I forgot to tell them to fry it hard, but it was still good. With 2 slices of bread. The service is good. They get you in and out. read more

The lunch/dinner special is the best deal--I would spring for the 5.99 catfish sandwich with fries. The Whiting is cheaper and milder--the catfish has a great black pepper kick in the breading. For either, you get enough fish for 2 people. On this stretch of the east side there are really few dining out opitions besides Wendy's. There's a funny sign on the door--no eating or loitering the parking lot. With no tables inside (just chairs) the parking lot is where most people eat. The sign is all bluster--the owners and staff of this place are warm, and your fellow diners are as happy as you are to eat a fish sandwich with a choice Detroit beverage. Hot fresh fish every time. Call your order in or be prepared to sit and wait. Also, the tartar sauce is kinda bold but I can live without it if I don't have any at home. I'm a catfish man and get it each time I go but the oysters are good as well. I'm not sure why but their cole slaw is great for no reason. Been calling since 8pm October 8 , 2015 ! I called 8 times , phone was picked up && hung up ! Not happy

I worked the afternoon shift and yesterday I told myself that Friday I was going to get some Hot Fish. I didn't eat breakfast because I wanted to save all my calories for dinner. Initially, I thought that I would go to the Fresh Fish House, which I did. I placed my order and asked how long would it take and was told 15 minutes. Checked my iPhone and after approx. 19 minutes I got a call from the counter, got my fish and left. Before I got to my car I realized that my bag was not hot. I then touched my sandwich and it was lukewarm. I was pissed, went back to the counter and told them that I waited at least for hot fish and this is not freshly cooked hot fish. She took my bag went to the back returned with another bag and gave it to me. I asked if this was fresh fish and she stated that she was told that the fish is hot. A man that I guess was the manager came and stated you just touch the bag and not the sandwich. The sandwich is hot. I wasn't going to go back and forward with this character I just asked for my money back. Got my bills and left the store. At about 7:00 pm after eating cooking, blowing my calories count and I was still carving Fish. Called and placed my order with Mr. Fish @ 2669 E Vernor Hwy. After 15 minutes I left to pick up My Fish. Yiipee. The bag was Hot with steam so much steam that the bag felt like it would tear. The Fish was good. Fresh and Hot. I got a large portion for under $5. I was already over my calorie count so what the hack. I ate all of it and I am now setting at by desk sleepy but happy. Lol read more

A hidden gem! I love coming here for their delicious whitefish dinners. The fish is so fresh and flavorful. My fish has been cooked perfectly every time and I'm a huge fan of the breading that they use. You definitely get your moneys worth when buying a dinner, it's enough to easily feed two people. I was also blown away by the cleanliness of this place, seriously it's impeccable and the staff is so friendly!
