My son and I just stopped there for lunch about an hour ago. He instantly went to sit at the bar (never does that cuz he's 6) but figured its fine because we're getting pizza). We sat down and were greeted by the nice woman working behind the bar. Got to talking with a local who was so warm and welcoming not overstepping us being there for lunch. Pizza is absolutely amazing and the staff and people are too!To the woman at the bar who we had lunch with thank you for buying our lunch it wasn't necessary but it was much appreciated! I was staying overnight in Plattsburgh and wanted to just grab a simple dinner. On the way to dinner I stopped to fill up the car at a gas station with cheaper gas; I then noticed Big Sal's in the parking lot and was happy to see the good Yelp reviews so I decided to give them a try. Just a smaller building with a compact bar and dining room inside, the decor is typical pizza joint, but clean and service was good. The menu has pizzas, sandwiches, salads and pastas. I ordered the Medium Cheese Pizza. The pizza came in about 10 minutes, was much larger then I expected and was excellent. The crust is medium thick, nicely risen with good flavor, the sauce is slightly sweet and generously ladled on and the cheese is fully cooked and has good coverage. The pizza comes together really nicely overall, the flavors balance and compliment each other. Big Sal's was a very pleasant surprise, really good pizza at a reasonable price and good service. I ended up taking half of the pizza all the way home to Cleveland. Big Sal's may be a bit off the beaten path but well worth your time if you are looking for a good pizza. read more

We paid around $13 for a small half cheese/half pepperoni pizza. The location is next to two gas stations. Plenty of seating inside and a bar. Stopped there after doing DIGSTOCK 2021 in October. Ive been in Chicago my whole life. I worked for Chicago for over 31 yrs. In those 31 yrs I've eaten lunch out at minimum 2-3x's a week. -Thats a lot of restaurants, a lot of food. This place by far has the best marinara sauce I've ever had. Period. Big Sals pizza is fantastic! We totally lucked out and pulled into their lot as we were looking to turn around and decided to just eat there. Just 12 reviews is always raises a bit of skepticism, but one of the reviews mentioned Big Sals was the perfect example of don't judge a book by its cover and they were dead on. What looks pretty down on its heels from the outside is clean and cozy on the inside with a welcoming staff and a pizza that is delicious! Our waitress explained after we devoured the entire pie, that they make their own dough there--and man does it show! It's slightly crispy but with a chewy center and perfectly raised. The toppings were balanced with just the right amount of each ingredient (we got the Supreme) so it had lots of different toppings. We'll be back and if you're ever in the Adirondacks, you should drop in too! read more

went to this restaurant a few weeks back amd had a horrible experience. I order the fish and chips dinner and when I got it, it was freezer burnt!! When I told the waitress she didn't do anything about it. In fact, she still charge me full price for a half eaten sandwich. No discount or compensation was offered. After that experience I definitely won't be going there again. If the chief can serve freezer burnt fish, (and I'm sure he knew!) and be ok with serving old fish to a customer, I'm pretty sure he's also ok with NOT washing his hands and or being ok with dropping food on the floor and serving to a customer. As a chief of a restaurant, you should know what is old or fresh in your kitchen!! You just don't care evidently! That experience showed me alot about that restaurant. Went to Big Sal's before seeing a movie nearby and ordered a salad and shared a calzone with husband. Calzone was huge and packed full of cheese. Salad was fresh. IPA Beer on tap hit the spot. I have ordered from here on many occasions in the past 3 years!! I am not one to complain however tonight I ordered a lasagna dinner and when I received my order the hamburg and noodles were burnt. Unable to eat it I called and complained and they said they would send another dinner and would like the first one returned. I had no problem with that because it was not edible. I received the second dinner which was about half the portion of the first one and obviously from the same pan. Unable to eat again!! I called again and was told they were sending a driver to pick up second order and refunding my money. Very poor business!! Needless to say I will no longer be ordering from them again. read more

So my girlfriend and I were having a party of twelve at our place today we called to confirm the prices that are listed on the online menu. we asked about the prices we found out that the online menu was wrong and hasn't been updated in a while and the girl that had answered the phone was very fast at giving the daily specials. when asked to slow down so we could understand her she treated us like we were idiots! not sure how you want your business to do but having customer service like this. I have to tell you big sals that was a three hundred dollar order that went to another pizza shop if I could give you a negative stars you would get it today. We ordered 2 large pizza's and hot wings. Both were excellent. The under-crust was crunchy and thin enough so it doesn't get soggy where it meets the toppings. The end-crust was nice and light and actually good to eat without cramping up your jaws. The wings, although somewhat on the smaller side, were flavorful, even though they could have been a little saucier. They still had crunch on the outside, and tender on the inside. We got the hot version, which could have had a little more kick for my taste. Service was courteous and efficient. Desserts need to be expanded, only 2 kinds of basic cake & chocolate pie. My son ordered a calzone that came out slightly overcooked (not even that noticeable). Other places would've just brought out his meal with no explanation (bc we thought it seemed fine). The food tasted homemade and the service was amazing! We ordered 5 honey bbq wings and 5 honey garlic wings with a slice of sausage and mushroom pizza. It was good. Not the typical New York thin crust but the toppings were visible and tastes good. The crust was not soggy with the toppings and had a good crunch when bitten into. The waitress was very attentive and was plesant. We were the only ones in thr restaurant but there were multiple delivery orders so they are doing something right! Ok, so on our way back to Long Island from a week's vacation in Canada we decide to get off of the Adirondack Thruway by Plattsburgh because we see a sign for "Big Sal's Pizza". Being Italian, and having eaten pizza not only in Italy but the actual pizza capital of the world NYC, I was unsure walking into a restaurant where the pizza is not sitting on the front counter behind glass for inspection. The hostess informed us that they did not serve slices after 4:00 p.m. The restaurant was clean, but what made us unsure was that there was nobody sitting in the pizzeria. The decor is simple with a bar counter, diner type booths and another big seating area. Boy am I glad we took a chance. The staff was friendly, and the pizza was DELICIOUS!!!! We ordered a large half onion, half mushroom pie made to order thin and crispy! It came out perfect! The sauce was tasty, cheese of good quality and the whole thing was $19 including two Lipton sparkling Teas! The pizza ranks up there with brick oven pizza places, and I have been to them all; Grimaldi's, Patsy's, Napoli 69, and The Pie at Salvatore's, to name a few. Last night we ordered a few apps from Big Sal's. What we got reminded me why we had stopped ordering from them. We NEVER had anything wrong with our food from there and LOVED it. Since they've hired a new cook, if something is wrong with the food and we call to discuss, we practically get yelled at by the gal who answers the phone. A friend at work does not order any more from Big Sal's for the same reason. Whether or not their phone gal is taking ques from the cook we don't know. We get argued with to a point just short of being called liars. My boyfriend loved the wings but the breading on my deep fried mushrooms and mozz sticks was quite dark and very burnt tasting. I called them. She was immediately on the defense. I suggested the oil be changed in the fryer. I was told it had just been changed the day before. She acted so angry I was calling, that I figured I'd get nowhere and simply hung up. I wish I would have also suggested the food was left in the fryer too long but I felt they would have arguably disagreed their way out of that too. So long for good this time Big Sal's. Wow. I'm surprised more reviews haven't come in for Big Sal's. I go there quite a bit and I'd have to say I have not had bad food from them yet. I would HIGHLY recommend the white pizza with garlic, chicken and broccolli. It's AMAZING!!! I've also had their calzones and chicken. I really think the food is quite good!! My friend ordered the chicken parm and it looked good, he liked it. I would recommend eating here. The place itself needs a HUGE makeover and perhaps that's why they aren't more popular? That's OK. I grew up in NY City and I moved to the Adirondacks about 5 years ago. The thing I miss the most from living downstate was the pizza. That is until recently. I tried Big Sal's for lunch with some clients from work and it was great. The service and pizza were awesome and the pricing we found very reasonable. It has been a very long time since I have had pizza this good and it is by far the best pizza I have had since moving to the area. A few days ago I stopped in for a pie to go, and it was ready in 7 min. Brought it home and it was great. While I live 40 min south of Plattsburgh, whenever I am in the area I will make an effort to stop here. read more
