We went for dinner yesterday. (a Saturday night). It wasnt busy which isn't usually a good sign and we should have left then. Bruschetta app was good. I had linguine with white clam sauce and it was good but I wouldn't go back for it. DH ordered the Saturday special prime rib. He ordered it cooked medium and it was served rare. DD ordered pasta with vodka sauce and add shrimp for $$. Shrimp still had tails on it, one of them was actually cold and she said they had a weird taste so she ate none of them. (she is an adult and has eaten lots of shrimp in her life). Too much sauce on the pastas. DD #2 had cheese ravioli with marinara and again a boatload of sauce but she liked her ravioli. Pretty much a old school American restaurant with a bar in it that you can watch sports at different times this is not a bad place but there are many better places in general and from the people at the bar it did not appear that many were purchasing food. Came into Big Sammys for the first time for a birthday dinner. Extremely eeasy to find and lots of parking spaces to get to the establishment. When we came in we were greeted by friendly faces. Even Sammy himself came to say hi and make sure we had all we needed. They have tvs everywhere playing sports and even Big Brother. Appetizers came out fast, hot and delicious. The music playing was at the right volume so you can still have conversations. They had some nice fall drink specials and their regular drink menu, on top of a full bar was perfect. I consider myself a semi-regular at Big Sammy's because I frequent his restaurant about 3 times a month. Last night I had the weirdest experience that I have ever had at any restaurant in my life! As I was finishing my meal with one glass of wine the manager on duty on 3/7/2026 came up to me and said "We have a live band coming in" and then wanted me to vacate my seat and leave!! Why did he single me out and askme to leave? Because I am a senior citizen! I know there are federal laws pertaining to age discrimination in employment but I'm not sure if it applies to loyal restaurant customers. However, this manager definitely discriminates against senior citizens! It makes Sammy or his son Tommy coming up to you to greet you and welcome you seem phony. Visited for first time last night. With the reviews saying there was a long wait for food we were nervous that we would be waiting for a while. We ordered an app preemptively. Got the mozzarella sticks. App was out in just five minutes; was hot fresh and delicious. Husband ordered a burger, I got the chicken sandwich. Both were good. Owner swung by to thank us for visiting and make sure we had a good experience. You can tell they care to make the restaurant a success. Saturday early afternoon lunch. Parking and overall appearance welcoming. Choose to sit at the bar and eat there. Today we tried the Big Sammy's Italian Sub. Choice of side, we went with the salads. Salad served chilled, fresh and abundant. Special note were the extremely flavorful cherry / grape style tomato. The sandwich.... Creative. Topped with a balsamic dressing / relish. Large slab of baby mozzarella, and a decent portion of meats. The roll was perfect for this style sandwich. Kudos for the flavor combinations. Overall price seemed slightly elevated, but the type of, and abundance of ingredients covers that. Nice job Big Sammy, we shall return for a full dinner. The food was excellent. I had lasagna with bread. We did a pick up order for a large group. They forgot one person's order completely and gave us 3 pieces of bread. We dropped off the order earlier in the day, so they wouldn't be rushed. We called concerning the missing order and they were extremely rude. They never offered to bring it to us. Very sad day... one of my favorite spots close to home and today just ruined it for us. We always come for the rigatoni vodka and chicken parm. Well started off good with Marco coming to our table and talking so highly about service and the cooks and everything about the place, but our server was just the opposite. Very short, no warmth felt from her, made us feel like we shouldn't be there, anytime we asked for something, it was a hassle and she seemed irritated to do anything. Slammed our drinks, never asked if we needed anything. Asked for some things changed with our order and always had to say it was going to be a problem with the cooks. We wanted the vodka rigatoni and brought us our penne, said they were out of rigatoni and that's all we can get, instead of asking us what we would like instead. When leaving my son kept saying "excuse me" to ask for another sprite but she kept walking away so fast that she never got it.... The only negative part of my dinner experience was an extremely loud and rude table of individuals who boasted that they complain often to other restaurants in the area to receive complimentary meals. I had an amazing meal at Big Sammy's tonight. I had the Italian sausage & peppers appetizer which is one of my favorite appetizers of all time. The homemade sausage has the perfect amount of heat, spices and such a hearty and unique texture. The sauce served with this dish is incredible. It's a thick "broth" infused with herbs, white wine and finely ground peppers. And the sweetness of fresh red, green and yellow roasted peppers complement the savory sauce perfectly. The appetizer portion is ample & can easily serve 3-4 people. Big Sammy's also has excellent pizza. Tonight I had the sundried tomato and basil with arugula and garlic. The fresh baked crust is filled with mozzarella, is soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. I was very pleasantly surprised by the pizza this evening. I will be back very soon to have more. My only issue was the guy and his wife in the next booth bragging to a friend he was going to slam the place for not having pasta that wasn't on the menu for his 4 yr. That him and the wife get free meals slamming restaurants all around plainfield and naperville... so to you sir with the fur collar and the kid in the Grogu hat... stop slamming good restaurants and scamming for free food. The service has been great the two times we have been there. Matt the server went above and beyond of every question we had. (Even though the website is wrong on specials) we tried apps found out the calamari is great. Do not get the "cheese and meat" board. Seems like it was a salad deconstructed. The bar is big and full of regulars but still inviting. The food or pizza is touch and go depending on what you order. If you get anything with clams double check if they clean them first. All and all it seems like a good time if you're a regular or know of the owners. Probably will be back but will not go by the website specials. I've waited a while to write this review as I have not liked Big Sammy's since they opened in downtown Plainfield. The service is always bad. We've only ever had one good server named Michael I think. The food is overpriced. My husband ordered no mushrooms and it seems they put extra mushrooms in his sandwich. There's a pitiful amount of gnocchi in the order. The music is always SO loud. And someone played Tom jones on repeat all night. I'll never get the appeal other than wanting to stand at the bar. Our first visit for a date night at Big Sammy's Bar and Restaurant and they really delivered! Our waiter, Nathan, was so attentive and he was noticeably busy. The food was AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! I had the veal which melted in my mouth and my date had the pork chops vesuvio cooked perfectly. The portions were generous. I've had dinner at Sammy's 5 times. The pizza is delicious. $55,000 oven from Italy and it makes amazing pizza. The service has definitely improved. I don't recommend the watermelon Prosecco drink. It tasted like soda water mixed with perfume vodka and no garnish. I don't think there was any watermelon in it. Even saw the lady across from me return it and get wine. I also returned it. It was that bad. They ran out of balsamic dressing, so we skipped the salad. I wish they could whip up a quick oil and vinegar dressing. Sammy's has great potential. Beautiful building and great pizza and bread. Nice bar but needs to improve the drinks. I'll come back for the pizza.
