The shrimp and polenta and the meatballs are always a go-to for us, and when we come in as a group, we usually end up sharing a few of the wood-fired pizzas, which are consistently excellent. The bar is the first thing you notice and is very welcoming to sit and have a drink. Cocktail menu was a good selection and some unique offerings. Ordered the appetizer of focaccia with the lemon ricotta and marinated cherry tomatoes. Was decent but the tomatoes may have gone better with a savory ricotta like basil/garlic rather than the lemon. Just a personal opinion. Was fresh and different. Ordered a house salad which was good, fresh and not watery like some places. Then the pizza, great crust. Well risen, chewy but not soggy at all , just the right crisp and not skimpy on the toppings. Sauce was not sweet and a good roasted tomato flavor. Service was fantastic on an early Saturday evening! Went for a group dinner party, and it was perfect. The side room is a wonderful private space and ideal for hosting a larger group. The service was amazing and they were well prepared and attentive throughout the evening. Went there on a Thursday night to give the Clifton a second chance, as we were not impressed our first time there shortly after it opened. We sat outside and the staff was great and attentive. The drink was good. (Old Fashion). However, the food wasn't all that good. The pear bread bites seemed a little charred and really didn't work. I had the pork tenderloin and it was very bland. My wife had the Margarita pizza and was over sauced. If you're looking for a great meal, there are other places I would suggest. If you hanging out just for drinks, it would suffice. read more

Decided to check out The Clifton on a Friday evening at 4pm. We were greeted right away and brought to a table. They do not to reservations but at this time there was no wait. When sat, we were given water and mentioned the soup of the day as baked potatoe soup. As an appetizer, the Deviled Eggs were good. On their featured menu, the Sweet & Spicy chicken sandwich was great. We also had the burger with option of truffle fries. I've been meaning to try this place since it opened in the summer. I'm a big fan of downtown Plainfield so I'm glad to see another cocktail bar join the area. I was mostly interested in the cocktails as I ate right before coming. The first drink I ordered was the surfer Rosa. It's a tequila base mixed with strawberry, guava, lime, and egg white. It was light but tart and sweet. My second drink was a margarita with mezcal. The bartender added a mango/passion flavoring which was a nice touch and not too sweet or overpowering. My girlfriend got the bacon jam pizza which she thought was a bit underwhelming. She was hoping for savory/salty but got a lot of sweetness. Overall the ambiance is nice. They've got a nice bar with a good amount of seating. The music was probably my least favorite part. I wish it was a bit less mainstream, but that's just me. First i want to touch on the food. The foccia was less than impressive and the hummus had WAY too much added oil but vegetables were fresh and the wine was delicious Now to the real issue. Me and my party came in at 7:45 (over an hour before closing time) it took 3 minutes for my party to get sat and our server Alyssa could not seem less interested in serving us. Yes the restaurant was not that busy but it is a sunday night so i understand times are slow but the way our experience was handled was unacceptable. After we had ordered appetizers our server asked if we were planning on ordering entrees because their kitchen would be closing at 9pm OVER AN HOUR LATER. They then proceeded to turn the music off in the restaurant mind you this was an hour before closing. So naturally we were absolutely ready to leave on the spot. It took so long for the server to get back we went to the bar to get paid out and left uncomfortable and furious. I have been in the industry for almost 10 years and dine out a few times a week and i am always excited to try somewhere new and i have never EVER felt the need to immediately write a review before now. I never write reviews but the bartender/server that took care of us tonight Emma T gave us the worst service I've ever had. Came here with a group of friends tonight, all we wanted was a table to order some drinks & chat for a little, they close at 12 we arrived at 10:30 & right away noticed the bartender was bothered by our arrival. She set down our drinks with attitude & then started slamming as she was cleaning up. We tried to ignore her horrible attitude until she yelled at us from where she was that if we wanted to order some more drinks we would have to go order at the bar, I'm confused all we're ordering are drinks? It's only 11:20 & this an easy tip for her, we didn't order food & we weren't planning on making her stay longer than her shift. Needless to say we won't be coming back!!!!! read more

We were so excited to finally try out the Clifton after waiting for what seems like the past year. The menu looks and reads so well. Every dish we had was delicious. We tried the el poutine for our appetizer and it was a flavor explosion. All of the ingredients went together so well. We also tried the chicken parm, bacon jam pizza and the Clifton classic burger. My wife and I visited here Saturday evening and sat at the bar. The ambiance is very sleek and upscale, yet still a casual vibe to appeal to any occasion. We were greeted promptly by both bartenders who, might I add, made an excellent old fasioned. The menu has a totally unique and exclusive feel, and we started with the prawns and polenta. The polenta was served in slices that were crisp on the outside, yet soft in the center, and the prawns were cooked to perfection. We then recieved the 2 pizzas we ordered. Wow. Finally! A restaurant that uses a woodfire oven as intended! Beautiful crust with light darkening on the edges, a nice firm underside, and ingredients you can truly taste are fresh and top tier. At this point, I was so impressed I had to order dessert (which I never do). The chocolate mousse, to no surprise, was phenomenal. Whipped to a light, fluffy, airy texture and topped with slivered almonds for crunch. Bravo. Downtown Plainfield has been long overdue for a restaurant that tastes as great as it looks. Although the interior is lovely, the service left much to be desired. We were seated outside for lunch today and were one of two tables with guests. It took over 35 minutes to get my drink. The food came a little bit more quickly. It was very average. Nothing was bad, but nothing stood out. Also quite pricey in my opinion. read more

The PERFECT addition to downtown Plainfield! My husband and I had been waiting for the opening and were so excited to go for the first time. We had a hard time deciding on inside or outside seating, but the weather was beautiful so we opted for their cute patio. Before we sat down, we made sure to check out the interior- it's gorgeous! I'm in love with the aesthetic and everything looks so clean and elegant but still has an outgoing, fun vibe to it. To start we ordered the fig and brie bread- It wasn't my favorite dish of the night but still very good. The bread could've been a little crispier but I did love the light, airiness to it and all of the ingredients melded so well together. We also ordered the wagyu meatballs & fried artichoke hearts. OMG. Now these items I would solely come back for. The meatballs were fall apart tender & had such a rich flavor to them, loved the addition of the ricotta. The fried artichoke hearts were my favorite and actually one of the best appetizers I've ever had. So simple but done perfectly. The crunch was incredible and the green goddess sauce was bursting with flavor. To drink we had wine & tried a few cocktails- my favorite was the sunset in Puebla but we thought the others were amazing as well (deadly garden & the stinger) Service was a 10/10 and our entire experience was great. The Clifton's website does not fit their restaurant vibe. The website is dark and fancy. The restaurant is bright, cheery and modern. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in. The vibe I got was casual, fresh, and fun. The atmosphere put me in the mood for homemade soup and salad with homemade dressing and wood fired croutons and freshly made iced tea. What I got: delicious, fresh garden salad with a slightly sweet vinaigrette dressing, multicolored snappy tomatoes, slivered carrots, arugula tossed in. No croutons. Wood fired bbq pizza with a perfectly cooked crust with way too much sweet bbq sauce that made a huge sticky mess. I gave up eating it and brought it home and it was actually better cold because the sauce thickened and it wasn't as messy. I expected a freshly made iced tea, but it tasted like it came out of the bar soda gun. Blah!! My husband enjoyed his Al pastor tacos. I will give the Clifton another shot. Gorgeous interior. Sat outside. Big outdoor area but the sun shade they had over didn't completely filter out the sun. It still was really hot. I love the hot weather personally but I can see it getting uncomfortable for some. One couple actually went inside after a bit. I feel like they need to put something up that's thicker. I like the no umbrella look though. It's unique. Very friendly and helpful server. While we waited for our drinks and to order I just stared at all the dishes going by. It all look so good. Food was amazing. My husband had the breaded steak sandwich. The sauce had a little kick to it. Really delicious. I had 2 of the additions because they looked so good and they were. Brussel sprouts with ricotta and the roasted cauliflower. Huge portions. I had a glass of rosè. It was so light and refreshing. While I looked over the menu I noticed the drinks so I tried the supra Rosa I think it is called. First tequila drink on the menu. So delicious. My husband called the Clifton early on in the week trying to make a reservation for my birthday dinner, the automated voice system said that they don't take reservations but they have a waitlist that you can get to through Yelp. he decided he would do that on the day of... well when he went to do that it said the waitlist was unavailable. we showed up at the Clifton at 5:50 pm and the two hostesses told us that they were super busy but we could get seated in about 30 to 45 minutes. we sat down in the front area and 15 minutes later the other hostess comes over and basically their attitude the whole time was like this but she came up to us again and was like "the tables are still really full it's probably gonna be about another 40 minutes maybe you guys wanna ..." it was basically their way of saying we don't have time or space to actually care about you. This experience and the way they made me feel like my family and I were an inconvenience to their night. I don't think we will be returning. read more

We were immediately served and we sat outdoors. The inside looked really nice, so next time I will dine indoors. We ordered some bread bites with vodka sauce, they were soft and pillowy but still had a little crisp to it. However, it had a bit too much parmesan garlic stuff on it, had to take some of it off. The vodka sauce tasted like vodka sauce, nothing too special. Our pizza came we ordered a half cheese, half sausage and mushroom. The pizza was very saucy, more than I wanted, the sausage tasted homemade or it was made by a quality butcher. The crust was delicious and dipped in the vodka sauce was immaculate. My partner said the food was alright, I'd say it was pretty decent. I would recommend it for a nice meal but I wouldn't hoot and holler about it. I would put a 3.5 but yelp doesn't allow half stars. Another thing that I noticed was that even though our pizza had half toppings they charged us for like a full pizza. I personally thought the 3 dollar topping charge should have been $1.50. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars but I can't. First off the good. The food, cocktails, and decor were excellent. However, the service was incredibly slow. The staff was very friendly, but sooooo slow. Multiple tables sitting with empty drinks and finished plates with no wait staff around. The place wasn't even half full at the time either. I think if the wait staff was better trained it would be a five star review. We will give it another try in a few weeks. Will update review then. read more
