A cute cafe with a decent amount of seating and unique lattes and pastries! The 16oz latte has four espresso shots which is actually double the espresso of the 8oz (not just extra milk, which seems to be the usual these days). It was not very sweet and had more of a subtle cinnamon flavor but great nonetheless.

The bag I got was roasted over 4 months ago, the beans were dark and oily,

ordered a light roast that was advertised as freshly roasted, but what I received was completely different. This is quickly becoming one of my standard neighborhood coffee bars. It started with the need for some coffee beans after a workout class, and I thought I'd stop in. I love the free latte that comes with buying beans! Staff was super friendly and helpful when I had no idea what to get. The interior is cozy and nicely decorated. There's not a ton of seating given the small space, but the people working on laptops seemed to have enough space. I'll continue to come back!

used the bathroom and the worker was very nice! The barista lady however screamed at me when I asked for oat milk of the Horchata only had rice milk when i asked for oat milk. I feel like the Orion experience was nice however, it was a little awkward and confusing as to why the barista got somewhat irritated and annoyed because I had asked for outback. I did not know it would've been such a big issue.

There is a new location at 213 W. Lake Street. I figured what the heck let me try something different. I wasn't impressed. I ordered the regular size dripped coffee. Besides, they only have one size cup for $2.79. I'm not a fan of Lattes or Expressos. The coffee was not hot and it was a bit too strong for my taste. The guy behind the counter was very nice and polite. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming but the coffee is not on my hit list. Maybe, I will feel the urge to stop in again and give them another shot.

Love Big Shoulders Coffee. Chill atmosphere...almost too quiet sometimes. Thankfully one of the workers today was belting out the song on the speakers so that eased the silence a bit. There was a couple in doing some kind of engagement or couple photoshoot, but other than that it was all guys solo sitting around the big table - aside from me and my friends. The workers were both really friendly and patient with us, explaining anything we needed. They had apple pie & coffee cake and even offered the last piece of pie to whoever wanted it! Two guys raised their hands and they split it for them...very sweet! I had a delicious chamomile tea for $3 and the coffee shop worker brought out spoons, spoon holders and glasses of water along with our tea. Really liked the vibe and service, would definitely come back to Big Shoulders Coffee.

Big Shoulders Coffee is the epitome of coffee done right and it's a place that makes me so glad (ecstatic, in fact) that coffee culture exists. They have high quality beans, a straightforward menu and the friendliest, most hard-working baristas who care as much about preparing the coffee as ensuring that you're enjoying it. Wonderful. If you have the Indie Coffee Passport, they don't have a separate drink menu to choose from; you can have any drink already listed on their menu. Even more wonderful. The moment I walked in, I was greeted with a "Hi, how are you?" For every person who leaves, the staff wishes them well with a "thanks for coming by" or "have a good one." Even the call-and-answer way the baristas communicated with each other behind the counter displayed the fluidity of their teamwork. When I was seated at the counter, I was kind of fascinated. They would constantly give each other tips or experiment making different kinds of coffee. I realize now that they're relentlessly perfecting their trade. I ordered a Uganda dark roast in a press which is timed to 4:00 minutes. I absolutely love how they talk each other like scientists geeked out in a lab... along the lines of: "Is your timer set?" "You bet, it's to 4 minutes." I did have a front row seat to witness their craftsmanship. Words from Carl Sandburg's "Chicago" poem were painted on their walls: "Hog Butcher for the World, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler; Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders:" Their space is open and inviting, and somehow they capture some of Chicago's history and embody its hardworking spirit. There are bar stools at all the windows and their counters even have purse/jacket hooks underneath! You will see shelves of pour over contraptions with names like kalita wave, stacked alongside beakers, kettles, scales and timers. To go with my coffee, I also ordered a Basque pastry (like a petit madeleine in the shape of a tart, dusted with powdered sugar) and those run about $4.00. It was exceptionally good. If I hadn't gotten a dark roast coffee, I would have ordered their Cardamom Latte. A friend (also with the Indie Coffee Passport) had raved about the Marshmallow Latte that comes with a toasted marshmallow. It has been awhile since I've given five stars to a cafe, but both their coffee/staff top the list in the coffee world and are nothing short of wonderful.

I got a really good vanilla latte here! I would recommend, but don't stray from main menu items. Hot chocolate isn't their strong suit. Taking off a star bc it is lacking outlets, which is surprising for a coffee place. Though I love to support local businesses read more

Awesome place. Nice design. Practical no weird bells and whistles. Great place to run in and out or have a study with your coffee. Saw the Mayor there so it must be good. Most importantly, friendly helpful staff and delicious coffee. read more

One morning not too long ago I was waiting for the bus and realized I had just enough time to grab a hot coffee. I zipped inside Big Shoulders and there was only a few people ahead of me so I felt safe I would catch the bus on time. The lady at the counter got my order and within a few minutes I was out of the door with a warm latte in hand. It was unsweetened and unsyruped and just delicious on it's own made the long trek to work worth it! read more

Quiet and cute little shop just west of the hustle and bustle of the Magnificent Mile. Dropped by on a hot day to get one of their summer specials, the hibiscus tea with sparkling water. It was tart and refreshing, and I want to stop by again to try their coffee! read more

Good coffee. Makes the hood smell good when they are roasting. Nice space...if you are into over the top industrial communal hippie stuff. I have been here twice and won't be in a third time. The girls behind the counter are sweet and don't act like they invented the coffee bean. The drip coffee is good, not life changing. The owner-guy/managingpartner/whoever is a bit of a twerp. He has a snotty attitude and acts like you are ruining his day if he has to help a customer. He is the bean genius and his delicate sensibilities don't allow him to simply sell coffee. Which is what he signed up for. The coffee is good, if you deal with the right people the service is friendly. The vibe is less than welcoming with the whole "we have a big table and flowers and assume you want to sit down next to the 10-12 people on their macbooks creating blog-chatter" is a little funny. But that's what Morimoto would want - so. Go to this place if you got off the blue line and need coffee, they are the only option for about .5-1 mile in every direction. read more

I was greeted with a smile. I ordered a Iced vanilla chai latte on a super hot day. I was given the choice of skim or whole milk...I opted for skim. The drink was decent and quenched my thirst but the flavor was not all there. This place is warm and inviting; I will have to go back to try more. Bike parking out front. read more

Right on the southwest corner of the Chicago ave and Milwaukee ave intersection. Great local coffee spot. Best part is they offer ALMOND MILK! Yes; I love a huge latte with almond milk and stevia. This place has a lot of charm inside. Love the wood seats and the tile on the counter. Great bar counter to sit and use free wifi while you drink your latte. Mostly I just get coffee to go while I wait for the bus or the train. This corner was in long need of a coffee place & now it has two and I recommend big shoulders. read more

Went there to do some work on my computer one afternoon. Service and the marshmallow latte was great! Seating was somewhat limited as the place was kind of small and not too many tables, but definitely worth going to I think if you want to try a different coffee shop that isn't so generic like Starbucks. read more

Big Shoulders Coffee is one of my go to spots for coffee! The space is bright even on the gloomiest days with their floor to ceiling windows. There is space to work at the coffee bar, community table, or right by the windows. Summer drinks are here and I'm loving both the Painted Lady and Cafe Bombon. read more

I stopped into Big Shoulders Coffee Works this morning to give it a try and the small soy mocha was delicious and sweet but not too sweet and I downed it thinking it wasn't strong because I didn't taste the burnt flavor of coffee I'm so used to at Starbucks and now a few hours later I'm still incredibly surprisingly buzzed and have been working so efficiently that I thought I'd stop for a minute to write this review. read more

Revised review, this place is awesome. I prefer the brewed coffee to the espresso drinks. Easily the nicest coffee shop I've been to in town. And the pastries are really good, especially those dulce de leche thingies. Good music, good people, good lighting, good coffee. All the things you need for a successful coffeeshop. read more

Great place to get a solid coffee without the pretentiousness in the city. You can get a regular cup of coffee sure. Or you can get something with a little extra like the horchata latte. Drinks are made quick and you can even see them roasting their own beans. At least I'm pretty sure that's what's going on. Wouldn't hesitate to come here again. Also it's literally steps from the Chicago blue line stop. What else could you want? read more

Excellent fast drip at a fair price. Smooth and balanced. No caffeine spike nor crash, and I don't get the coffee-cough like I do with SB's.. I'm in town for four days, and will stop in four times. No need to experiment elsewhere. They should try serving giant toast, like "The Mill" in SF. Friendly service by all. Check this place out. read more

a couple of weekends ago, we decided to brave the heat and bike to blues fest. on our way back, we needed a jolt, and this place looked inviting. we were not disappointed! i absolutely loved the staff - they were very friendly and attentive. though i went the "boring" route and got a plain old chemex coffee, it tasted as delicious as it does when my husband makes it at home. some girls came in and ordered iced lattes, and i ended up with a nasty case of drink envy, since i noticed that the baristas made them with ALMOND MILK. need to go back and check that out sometime. we hung out for a bit - they played great music and didn't rush us out. sitting at the "coffee bar" seems to be totally acceptable. love this place and wish it was closer to our home! read more

Cold brew is always SO good (not too acidic) & keeps me caffeinated for the rest of the day! Very clean and open environment to study - I love the big wood table. Staff was nice and and even brought me water while I was engrossed in my reading. Location is great as it's just off the Chicago Blue Line stop. Will be back again soon! read more

This great new coffee shop opens to the public tomorrow. I stopped by for the soft opening this weekend and was very impressed. All of the coffee is roasted fresh in house and the proof is in the taste - the drinks had great flavor and depending on when you stop by you might get to watch the roasting process. The owners are very welcoming and the small shop had a great vibe. I'm looking forward to future trips! read more

SIMPLY AMAZING fresh roasted coffee on site daily, not to forget about the fabulous scones... Being coffee fanatics we feel so lucky that Big Shoulders opened up just a few blocks away! The owner and staff are super nice & knowledgeable too and offer a wide variety of coffees freshly roasted on site daily...why pay$$ for coffee roasted months ago when you can have this awesome experience of freshly roasted coffee for the same price!!! Came in last week in need of an iced tea and wasn't in the mood to make my own at the office. Amen, Big Shoulders Coffee Works. I purchased the orange mint tea and a pastry (the Southerner in me calls it a cinnamon roll, really a brioche). Tea refreshing and not because of the hot weather. Brioche, I wasn't expecting fabulous as I've been let down many a time from coffee shops with stale sweets. Not this little guy I savored at my desk. It's only been a week and I've been back 3 times. read more

The Mexico coffee is amazing. Expertly roasted. LCD screens tell you when buses and trains are due so you can tell if you have time for a chemex. Staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. The atmosphere is laid back and surprisingly quieter than most coffee shops, even when you factor in all the necessary noise of operating a coffee shop. read more

While I'm not a huge coffee drinker, I do love this place. The coffee is really strong (for me anyway), but I love their tea and hot chocolate with soy and vanilla. They also have this carrot cake that will blow ya mind. The staff is super nice and approachable, and the vibe is very laid back. It may not be the best kick it spot (no comfy chairs to be found) but it's a great cafe overall. read more

Good Vibes & Great Coffee. I will never forget my first time going to Big Shoulders and getting a coffee to go. I totally underestimated the strength of their coffee, but man was i in for a surprise! The staff is super friendly, a quick place to get away or kill time to get a coffee while waiting for the blue line or 66 bus. They really blew my mind when i ordered the toasted marshmallow latte- everyone needs to try it! read more

I look forward to stopping in (almost) every morning on my way to work. The staff is friendly and welcoming, the pastries are delicious and the coffee is affordable and is one of my favorites in the city. And while that is all great, what I love most is that you never know what kind of surprise is waiting for you when you walk thru the door...is it a DJ? Free cup of coffee? $1 cup of joe when you ride the cta? They even have a bus tracker so you can enjoy your morning in the stylish space while you wait for the bus/train. read more

My favorite coffee shop in the city. Great staff, great coffee and tea, welcoming atmosphere and a board with the arrival times of the local busses and trains. As a cta rider this is so cool and convenient. Definitely give them a go. read more

The downside was that it seemed they don't have public restrooms, which maybe makes it hard to sit and stay awhile despite the cozy environment.

Herb croissant-3/5 pretty decent. Service and hospitality were great, had a staff member come up to us and ask us if we were enjoying everything. Overall I thought it was a cool place with a ton of tables on every floor, looked really cool inside, awesome there are only a few in the world. Aesthetically pleasing And photo worthy. A little pricey for what they serve. But regardless, Got marked off the bucket list. Very unique inside. Be aware they do not have the typical Starbucks drink menus.

Rolled into Big Shoulders Coffee in West Town for my morning fix and it hit just right. I ordered a Cortado and their signature Bold Slugger blend, instead of messing around, the cortado had that rich espresso kick mellowed out by silky microfoam, and the Bold Slugger was smooth but still bold, exactly how I like it. The baristas were chill and knew their stuff, even chatted me up about the on‑site roasting and how they source beans fresh from partnerships around the globe. The space is clean and modern, great for grabbing a seat and plugging in for a bit, though it does fill up fast on weekdays. Prices are a bit up there, especially compared to your average corner shop, but you're paying for quality and passion. Only held back by slightly cramped seating, but otherwise a solid spot to start the day. read more

I stopped by after 9am to grab a cup of joe and also grabbed a apple muffin. The space is small, but cozy with a few tables and higher seats against the windows. I can imagine this place being super packed during the morning rush. As for the coffee it was really good. It was the house coffee and was not too strong. The muffin however was dry and did not taste like apple at all. Both items set me back almost $7. If you want to grab a good cup of joe ONLY and a cozy spot to do work or look out the window AFTER rush hour than come here other than that there is a DD across the street for muffins. read more

Quieter than the "big Intelligensia" nearby, it's easier to have a conversation here. Old school, Instagram-friendly look with black and white tiling, and as always, the coffee/lattes are solid, and caps have just the right amount of foam. read more
