I stopped by for a cappuccino today, and it was excellent. The coffee was smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced. The café has a clean, modern atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Coming from a true coffee connoisseur, this place is magic and otherworldly! The iced honey thyme latte is the most delicious drink that is somehow nutty, salty, sweet and fresh all at once. The gluten free milk chocolate brownie was great - almost carrot cake like in texture and taste. We threw in a toasted pandan marshmallow just for fun - I was skeptical but omg. It tasted like sunshine. I would come back here a hundred times. read more

The cafe is so beautifully and thoughtfully built. All of their disposables are compostable and environmentally friendly. You can tell they really try to make unique, quality drinks. The thing that's missing is good matcha recipes. The barista talked up the matcha manzana (matcha, honeycrisp, granny smith, allspice), he said it was amazing and everyone loves it. I decided to give it a try, and it tasted like syrupy apple juice mixed with milk. I couldn't do it, it went in the bin. I hope someday I'll find something on their menu that is good, it's a cute shop! read more

Updating my review. This neighborhood coffee shop is one of my faves. The people who work here are all so friendly and helpful, esp Galen. The interior is still very cool, while also comfy. I do secretly hope they do some Xmas decor for the holidays hehee I got a quiche for the first time and it was very tasty. The matcha manzana has been my literal obsession for the last few weeks. Some of their drinks are seasonal, including this one, so get your matcha manzana while you can! There's pay to park street parking outside. read more

Got the midnight sugar latte and hot chocolate which were both pretty good. My boyfriend said the hot chocolate isn't like any hot chocolate he's ever had before. However, the midnight sugar latte does taste like other sweet lattes I've had before. Still good though. Prices are a bit high but kinda understandable since they make their own ingredients. Ambiance is excellent too! They have these a lot of exotic-looking chairs and tables. read more

I'm not a coffee aficionado by any means but I feel like the coffee here is really balanced, and not astringent or unpleasantly bitter. I also love that they have creative and unique drinks. Today I tried the seasonal caramel corn latte which was sweet and smooth (how I like my coffee). The corn flavour wasn't very identifiable, for better or for worse, so it was like an improved version of a caramel latte. Also had the cacao cappuccino, which was fine but would try something else next time. Was just a bit too plain and also doesn't have caffeine, if that's what you're looking for. The rocking chairs in the space are a fun touch and there was a mix of people hanging out and doing some work on their laptops. read more

Oro is a great spot to treat yourself to a high quality latte. It is pricey, but the vanilla latte I ordered is easily the best latte I've had in recent memory. The shop has an interesting vibe, with lots of blonde wood, swirling lights, and diverse seating options , from benches with small tables to a long bar with stools to rocking chairs. It is modern, but warm. When I arrived, I was greeted by a very happy, friendly staff member who offered to answer any questions I had. After asking about the sweetness level of their special lattes, I settled on their vanilla especial, flavored with a house-made vanilla syrup from the real thing. It was fantastic! The espresso was smooth and rich, and the vanilla flavor very natural. When I finished it, I even noticed little spots of vanilla in the cup. This place is expensive, no doubt. I paid $6 before tax for my small latte. But I wouldn't hesitate to come back for a treat day, and I thought the high quality of my drink was definitely worth it. read more

There's something really special about Oro coffee bar. From the modern yet cozy furnishing and ambiance to the VERY high quality coffee this place is set to be a classic. Oro Chocolate and Coffee offers a winning selection of matcha, coffee and teas. I was excited to try a handful of items, to which neither disappoints! I tried their Eastern Rose Latte and Matcha-Chachio. I absolutely loved both drinks as well as their pistachios finacier. Eastern Rose Latte is a floral symphony of Pakistani Rooh Afza, Lebanese rosewater, and cherry syrup harmonized with our espresso and creamy milk. Matcha-chachio describes as a luxurious layered experience with creamy horchata and house-made pistachio paste embracing premium matcha for a multi-dimensional indulgence. I'd say this description is quite apt for this cold beverage. A decorded matcha tea drink. Let's talk about the interior design. This space is beautiful and modern-- a cohesive aquatic movement of gold guilded slats run from one wall, up past the ceiling to the other side of the wall. What I also really liked about this coffee shop is that each individual seating has a trio electric outlet: USB-C, USB-A and the US plug. Very attentive to detail for their consumers. Let's just start with i love this cafe. We've spent many weekends reading a good book or getting some work done here. The ambiance of feels a little space age-y, in a good way. Their speciality lattes are out of this world good! I've had so much fun trying their lattes, I haven't had their espresso straight which I need to remedy. They take a lot of care into perfecting their house made syrups and that really does come out in the flavor. One small nitpick is they don't have alternate cow milks (only whole milk). I've gotten the Eastern rose, the Demerara, especial vanilla and can't remember the name but one with balsamic glaze (sounds weird but was soooo perfectly balanced). They were all excellent, but the balsamic one was the most unique and by far my favorite (please bring it back!). Their lattes do change seasonally. Service has always been nice as well. The latte will put you back $6-8, but it's well worth it for a this well crafted cup. read more

Update, I went for the hot chocolate and can say it's some of the best in Chicago. Recently I've had the hot chocolate at Mindy's (great ) and Ipsento (awful ). Oro is creamy, sweet, rich. Lovely texture and flavor. I usually do not go for alternative milks but the oat milk was a great option for this. As always, staff are friendly and prepare your drinks with attention to quality. The one thing about this store is that it can feel a bit off... I love the abundant seating but the vibe may be a bit too trendy or lacking personality for a coffee shop. Had to come back again and try the pistachio horchata matcha. Knowing they really nailed the mango matcha I just assumed this drink would also be spectacular and no expectations were fallen short of. My BFF Kim and I stopped in for a traditional mocha and it was perfection -- rich, smooth, and so good it needed no sweetener. What a lovely little coffee shop. The design and decor is impeccable. The staff and owner are very knowledgeable. I want to come and work here in a regular basis. But most importantly their espresso was perfect. Most coffee shops in Chicago have no idea how to make a good espresso. This was in the top 5 I have had in chicago and that's saying something. I have had an espresso at hundreds of places in the city and this one impressed. I didn't sample their food items but I did taste their in house made chocolate. I love that they had samples. When you have high quality expensive chocolate, it's helpful to be able to taste it before you buy it as everyone's taste palette is different. I'll be back. read more

Super cute space and the chocolate is made in house which is great! They also sell chocolate bars in store and have little samples for people to try their chocolate. However I hate that there are no prices listed anywhere. I paid about $10 for an oat milk mocha which had I known the price may have gotten something else. Also was super disappointed to find out their golden milk drinking chocolate has dairy. The first time I came I asked the barista if the drinking chocolates had any dairy and was told no because they aren't mixed with milk but the next time I came in was told the golden milk one actually does have dairy. As somebody who is vegan I am super upset that I drank dairy here the first time I came. There should be clear markings about what contains dairy on the menu for those with dietary restrictions or at least clear things for the baristas to be able to know when people ask. read more

I was disappointed after ordering the matcha latte here. I saw so many good reviews about it, but I was disappointed when I received it. The matcha latte tasted like straight up milk. No matcha flavor at all period. Not to mention, it was very pricey for a latte that has 90% milk. However the customer service was very nice so I'll give points for that. Wouldn't come here for matcha, you might be better off ordering a coffee. Also the seating is nice, recommend as a study spot. read more

I visited Oro today with two friends. While they sampled some chocolate (but didn't end up buying anything), I asked for the bathroom code and was given it--no signs or staff indicated any restrictions. As I was leaving, a man who identified himself as the operations manager stopped me and said, "We don't have a public bathroom. I'm the operations manager--and don't you ever come back." The bathroom clearly was public, and I had asked for the code respectfully. It seems the issue was that I hadn't made a purchase. I understand if businesses prefer restrooms for paying customers, but that should be communicated kindly and upfront--not with hostility after the fact. The experience was needlessly aggressive and left a very negative impression. I won't be returning to Oro or recommending it. read more

Rolled up to Oro Chocolate & Coffee in Wicker Park Saturday morning and grabbed a cappuccino and one of their famed brownies. The cappuccino was top‑tier: creamy, with the espresso punch you expect from a legit roastery, and the vibe in there is somehow hip without all the posturing. That brownie was dense and chocolatey--like something I'd brag about to my friends. The staff was chill and friendly, didn't feel rushed even when it got busy, and the decor with the chocolate‑making setup behind glass is a cool flex. History

Established in 2023.

I grew up in Chicago and spent a decade in Nicaragua building hospitality businesses and a bean-to-bar chocolate brand, working directly with smallholder cacao and coffee farmers. I saw how broken the commodity system is: “chocolate” that is mostly sugar, grown on deforested land, with exploited labor and lots of greenwashing from brands that cannot prove their claims. Oro is my answer to that. Today I partner with a cacao and honey export company that supports more than 300 farming families using regenerative agroforestry. In 2021 I came back to Chicago and spent two years building Oro as a warm third place where your daily coffee and chocolate actually support the people and forests that make them possible. Everything here traces back to those farms. The deeper you dig, the richer the story gets. And if you want proof, you can see it for yourself at our hospitality places and partner farms in Nicaragua.

Meet the Business Owner: Muffadal S.

I was born and raised in Chicago’s suburbs. After college I joined the Experience Institute as a founding student and spent years traveling to more than 60 countries, trying to understand how business could actually do good. That search led me to Nicaragua, where I spent a decade building hospitality businesses and a bean-to-bar chocolate brand. I worked directly with cacao and coffee farmers, learned how to ferment and roast, and saw how much unproven “sustainability” talk exists in this industry. In 2021 I came home and spent two years building Oro, a specialty coffee shop and chocolate cafe in Wicker Park where we roast coffee and temper chocolate behind glass. Everything we serve comes through a supply chain I helped build with farmers I know by name. If you are curious, ask. My Spicy Smoked Latte was perfect. Just a little kick from the smoked cinnamon. The banana bread donut was just perfect. My wife got a Ham + Swiss Croissant and it tasted better than most. And she's picky y'all! The Coco Latte was unique and worth the try:) Love the interior. Very clean, contemporary with a very modern looking roaster! Cielito Paradise sells some swag, coffees, teas, and more. Street parking was easy. Staff was friendly:) Check it out!

Let's start with the positives. I love the vibe of the cafe itself, it's one of my favorite spots just for the abundance of natural light and the cute decorations & art strewn across the walls. It's also just a very social atmosphere due to all the meetup events that congregate there, which can be a pro or con depending on who you ask. The employees are all super chill! Generally good vibes and never had a problem with their service. Now the negatives. The drinks and food are so mid. I keep trying different options hoping that I picked the wrong item, because I so desperately want to find that "go-to safe item" at my favorite spot. But all of it is just so, so mid. Sometimes it's too sweet (the most common problem), other times the flavoring is just super underwhelming or grossly artificial. The baked goods are all pretty low quality as well, I honestly think I could make better pastries myself (and I am a person who tends to be hypercritical of my work, so that's saying something).
