First time at the Fish Shack on Coit & Beltline and I wasn't disappointed in any way. The $7.99 lunch basket I tried on Friday was a single fried catfish filet with four butterfly shrimp. Yummers. Not greasy at all... perfectly fried. Not much on their corn fritters but the crispy outside was nibbled off when I left. French fries were just average. The bowl of shrimp and sausage gumbo was piled high with shrimp and had a nice spicy kick to it and was creamy. When they opened big shucks here though it was a lot closer, easier to park, and larger location made it easier to bring big groups! Always packed when I go ...even on weeknights. I came here for lunch one Friday. You have to order your food at the counter first and then find a seat and then they call your name over the speaker when it's ready. They had a pay after you eat policy. That was different, I guess it's just like sitting down at a restaurant and waiting for the check when you're done eating, but in this case you pay before you walk out the door. My visit to Big Shucks Richardson unfortunately broke a string of great new restaurants we've experienced recently. My wife and I visited yesterday on a Saturday Evening and were attracted to the Fried Clams daily special. Having recently experienced Ivar's clams in Seattle (and having the dish in various east coast seaports as well) we expected tender clams with a delicate taste and complimentary breading. Ivar's were great. The ones at Big Shucks were disappointing. They seemed overly large and tasted fishy and greasy with that rubber-band texture that reminded me of poorly cooked calamari. I honestly thought they were calamari strips given to us in error. In fact, I did see a tube of fried calamari in the batch which seemed to confirm my suspicions. I was assured they were indeed clams but they had to have been greatly overcooked. My wife ordered catfish fillets and also seemed to suffer from being overcooked. The breading was a bit greasy and the filet itself was on the dry side. Not bad but definitely not the quality expected. My entrée was Gilbert's Caldo, a fish and shrimp stew. I've had this at Seafood Shack and expected a rich broth with chunks of tasty fish, shrimp and vegetables. I have to say that it did have the large pieces promised and the 4 pieces of shrimp were good. The broth, however, tasted like water with chili powder. It was thin and had no richness or depth whatsoever. The fish absorbed the water (I refuse to call it a broth) and tasted spicy but had no other flavor. A great disappointment. The staff seemed friendly but they really need to get a handle on cooking times and quality of the Caldo. And, please, learn what a great fried clam tastes like! read more

What passes for Louisiana "Cajun" style food in DFW makes me weep. I ordered "gumbo"...it wasn't. The manager ladled something out of a pot, added rice, & then put a spoon full of small cooked shrimp on top. I took two bites & threw in the towel. For a big chain to have no clue what a dark roux is, or what gumbo is supposed to look/taste like blows me away. Oh, & boiled seafood is only sold by a full pound?!? After being in Nola last week, & having shrimp & crawfish boiled & ready to go...sigh. Got 2 stars because the manager took it away & got me clam chowder. He was nice about it.
