My boyfriend and I were driving interstate 1 checking out the national parks. We decided to stop for something to eat and this place seemed not to be as busy as the others were. This little place was perfect. They had premade sandwiches that were pretty big in size. My boyfriend and I actually shared the whole thing. The little store sold lots of goodies, from chips to beers to gifts and souvenirs. I am so glad we stopped- the sandwich was pretty good for the price! I would stop again and love to try the ham and Gouda! read more

A great place to get souvenirs drinks and food. The deli offers all cooked meals or burgers. I mainly eat food from the taphouse at neighbor. I think you can get excellent tacos there as well. It's dog friendly in the back it's a nice setting With views of the mountains. read more

I recommend the sandwiches and sometimes they have cool shirts- hit or miss. If you need something for hike or beach or campsite for the cooler it's pretty good verses the other places for grab and go. They also have that postcard you're looking for. read more

Make sure to try the tamale!!! I ordered chicken tamale and cheese tamale and they were super moist and tender!!! I was so impressed!!! I got the tee shirts on sale- one that says "Take a Hike" which is pretty cute. Cute store with vintage/hip postcards of Big Sur. I go to Big Sur once a year and like everyone else in the area, there doesn't seem to be a care in the world. It's a beautiful place with beautiful people and it's just heaven on earth. And then you walk into Big Sur Deli and somehow they manage to rub you the wrong way. They could not look anymore miserable than they are. They have attitude with you for even bothering to come into their shop. Not a single smile as you enter, order, pay and leave. I work in food service as well so I thought they might have had a bad day and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but after the 5th year of me going in there and seeing the same people just as miserable and new employees to carry on the miserable legacy and terrible customer service it seems to just be the norm at this place. It's very upsetting and they actually make really good food! I want to support them but it seems that the employees that work there don't want me to. Even the last time I went I left a really big tip in their empty tip jar (wonder why it's empty) and he just watched me put the money, didn't say a single word to me. I said bye thank you have a nice day and his response was a combination of a grunt and a sigh. Even as I walked out, two other separate groups that walked out were talking about how terrible their customer service is. I don't know who owns this place but they should really give them a beginner's course on the fundamentals of customer service. I visited mid-June while on a bike ride from Monterey to Ragged Point. My friend had been to the deli before and highly recommended it. I got the TBS and it was delicious. I only ate half as I was in the middle of my 80 mile ride. I had the other half a day later and it was still just as tasty and fresh. I like the rustic vibe out back and wished I wasn't riding as a pint of IPA in those surroundings would've been perfect. Service was fast and friendly. read more

Quick vacation up north and stopped in twice for snacks (corn dogs, chimichanga) for teenagers and then a picnic lunch the next day : "Mexican" sandwich and pesto pasta. All were delicious and fresh! My friend and I took a trip to Big Sur only to find out that the beach we wanted to go to had been closed due to the freeway. We found this gem because we needed directions and I'm so happy we made the stop because their sandwiches are the bomb. To me , I would view it as a "man sandwich" since it's so big but it's very fulfilling. I customized my sandwich and you can tell they use fresh food. Customer service is horrible; sour attitudes and dispositions. I witnessed their dismissive attitude towards a few customers, not just myself, so this is something you can anticipate walking in. Prices are ridiculous; $30. for two sandwiches - one they got completely wrong and the sandwich counter was not busy. Their souvenir selection is underwhelming and overpriced. The sandwich they did make correctly was delicious, but definitely not worth the experience or the price. There are a few stops available around this establishment... drive the extra mile and try there if you have the time. read more

I live in a town that has nine different Mexican restaurants, and none of their Carnitas can touch these folks Carnitas! I got the three tacos with the hot salsa ranchera, and they were absolutely phenomenal. I got them for breakfast and am now here again, waiting for my lunch order, with three of my friends. Lol. You can't not give this place 5 stars as far as I am concerned. You also can't compare it to other similar businesses in the area, there are none. You can grab a beer, some wine, sandwiches, chips crackers, cheese cookies, candies and every/anything else you need for you beach or forest picnic. The sandwiches are great. High quality meats and fresh produce. Better than some places in my own neighborhood in San Francisco. They also have a good selection of types of meat and sandwiches, beer and drinks. One of the first times I hit this place up I was on my way in to the Sykes hot springs on a Sunday. It's fairly close to the main parking lot where you enter. After you have been on the trail a couple hours this sandwich is like a bite out of heaven. This is also a great spot to stop and grab a drink as you pass by, stretch your legs and back on the long drive. Thanks for being in the area. read more

I was excited to pass this deli on a day road trip through Big Sur. I was starving after spending a day hiking in Garrapata State Park and a sandwich sounded amazing. I ended up getting a premade sandwich from the window because I was dying to try the Dutch Crunch bread that is unique to the San Francisco Area, and you couldn't make a custom sandwich with that bread. They had 3 or 4 different premade sandwich options, a deli counter with make your own, and some pre packaged salad types things. I got the "Big Sur Hipster" sandwich and the Greek salad (cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, olives in a vinagerette). I enjoyed both! Sandwich was packed with cheese (horseradish cheddar) and roast beef. It was a large sandwich! Could definitely share if you're not starving like I was. Huge, delicious sandwiches. Prices seemed very reasonable considering the location and the size of the sandwiches. Thick slices of bread. Delightful eatin'! The only thing that put a damper on our experience was that a very boisterous man came in and was mouthing off very loudly to another customer who was waiting in line behind us. He was very loud and sharing his opinions that really nobody else needed or wanted to hear. It seemed like maybe he was a regular patron of the store. My friend and I came here to get some snacks and food before continuing to go around Big Sur. We bought two sandwiches, one roast beef and one pastrami. When we had settled to have a picnic lunch by the river at one of the parks, we realized that the white bread was moldy. In both of our sandwiches. And both of our orders were wrong. I had asked for half a sandwich, but was given a whole sandwich. And my friend had asked for no tomatoes or lettuce, yet was given a sandwich with tomatoes and lettuce. Well when we read or talk about Big Sur we all need to keep one thing in mind here. This is a place for relaxation. To be silent, calm and respectful of others peace and quiet. With all that said moving onto the review:) I've been here for many years ( over 20 ). It's been here for a long time and it's never changed ( other than the place attached to it which is now a small beer/wine bar ) I'll review that place later:) If you need a quick snack or something you may have forgotten at home while your on your trip to camp etc you can go here. The food isn't AMAZING but it isn't bad either. The staff is always extremely helpful and kind. The food isn't actually to overpriced for the location. The sandwiches are great and taste fresh. Meats are your average processed stuff. But for some reason it's just so good? That may be because I'm always hungry when I come here or it may be because your just in that Big Sur zone/mood. Anyways I definitely recommend this place for a quick bite/sandwich/deli stuff. Weather your taking it to the beach close by or back to your campground. I was recently camping in the area. The campground staff recommended this deli and extremely happy that I chose them!! Clean and super cute place with a plethora of choices and also options to buy little general store items. A very nice gentleman recommended one of his favorite sandwiches since they all sounded amazing to me and I could not decide. The price was reasonable for the quality (A+) and size (huge)! What a joy to see The Big Sur Deli after hiking the Community Bypass Trail! The owner of the business is a Rock Star, staying open to serve locals and construction folks after the Pfeiffer Canyon bridge was destroyed. Each morning, the staff bring newspapers, fresh food, etc.up over Community Bypass Trail. I picked up some great souvenirs as well. Note: Park in Day Use Lot 4 at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park ($10). The trail beings after a ten minute walk through the campground Dogs are not allowed on the Community Bypass Trail. The trail is about 1/2 mile, straight up with 160 stairs and numerous switchbacks. Took us about 20 minutes. I believe the elevation gain is about 400 feet. Then, once you are at the top. it is another 200 yards or so to Big Sur Deli. read more

Mmmmmm......one of the best things along this lush, gorgeously green drive through Highway One & Big Sur. This humble, little grocery post & deli is smartly stocked with the right outdoor necessities, groceries and other personal or edible items. Stop by before you head any further, because this is like one of those camps in the Oregon Trail game where you can: -feed your cattle (gas your car) -feed your camp (just head straight to their awesome deli) -stock up on wagon fixing tools, meds and bullets (grab snacks, Tylenol/Claritin and other general items) -Gather the town news (pick up a current USA Today or map). They also make one mean sandwich...we were so satisfied and pleasantly surprised. The marble rye bread was fresh and the chicken salad amazing! Top it off with some avocado and you've got the perfect, fresh, ultra satisfying 'wich. Bottom line, it's great for when you're hungry and want easy food without having to stop by one of those overpriced lodge diners/ "rustic" restaurants. Great deal and you can get all your fixings and supplies before you continue on your rugged adventure! read more

After an initial 2.5 star visit here a couple of years ago, I've been back a few times since and this place has easily elevated itself to a 4 star experience. First time, I had the tuna on sourdough, and the whole sandwich had a vaguely stale feel to it, from the bread through to the lettuce. Given its location and lack of much competition I just assumed they didn't need to care, but I've been back a few times since, and they've all been much better experiences, so it looks like that first experience was an anomaly. I've usually gotten a sandwich, but at other times, I've just wanted a soda, or it would be like today's experience, a chocolate milk and a Clif bar to get me through that gap between breakfast and lunch. All sandwiches since the first have tasted good and fresh, with generous quantities of filling. The range of sodas is good (I know Jarritos Mandarin is fairly common in this part of the world, but it's still nice to see it here along side the normal range) and the junk food range is excellent. Prices are a little more than normal, but a little less than normal for the Big Sur area, and as others have noted, the locals have been in here every time I've visited, which has to be a good sign. It's also the last stop before entering condor country - that in itself deserves a star (but didn't get one in this review). read more
