My one and only issue with this place is the considerable and constant amount of traffic noise inside of the room. Otherwise, it was a complete hoot to see the place and to stay there. I wanted to bash this place, but couldn't. So instead, let me give you a couple of tips to enjoy it more. First. The motel shares the parking lot with the restaurant. So if you thinking about parking in front of your room, be prepared to play a waiting game. My suggestion, if you book in advance, call to confirm. Ask for a first story room if that is what you want (not a big fan of hauling stuff up stairs). Also the motel is in two sections. Ask for a room in the back one. Parking will be easier and you are closer to the pool. This place has charm. Plenty of great western idea (that you can do on a budget). T1-11 siding and metal roofing for the interior walls (it works). A oak barrel cut in half for the end tables. This was the worst experience in a motel I have ever had - do not, I repeat do not sleep here...now.. I am taking a trip cross country on my Motorcycle..saw this place on TV, heard about the food(for another review). I made the reservations a day in advance, got there about 145 PM.. when the young lady finally put her phone down I was told rooms aren't ready yet, not a problem I will go eat, drink and be merry. Stayed here Saturday night as we were driving across the country. First I called to make a reservation and I spoke to a wonderful young woman. She was very honest with me and gave me heat info! I made my reservation through the Hopper app. For the price we paid and the darling room we got, I can honestly say we would have paid more!!! Back to the arrival, the woman at the front desk was so nice and professional! She answered all of our questions with a smile and didn't act like we were bothering her. Awesome awesome awesome customer service!!! Even we got to the room, it was so clean! I was so impressed and the Texas cowboy decor was darling!!! At 10 pm I called the front desk to possibly get more coffee, and it was delivered to our room!!! I wish we lived closer this is one of those hotels that you just keep revisiting!!! read more

Ouch, stayed here a few times in the past but the place is going down fast! Once the Hampton and the one next to it open then I think this dump will be dozed down (hopefully) This time I was given a room in the Horse Motel and by God it smells that way. Had dinner at the restaurant ( decent food, great tourist trap). Came back to the room, showered, turned back the bedspread only to find the bed soaked with what I only hope is not urine. Thank god I had a double room! On a side note, NO WIFI ANYWHERE. It's the 21st century, we have self driving cars but cannot get wifi???? If a person was to invest maybe $500,000,00 into it real quick there may be the only way to keep the new hotels next door from shutting them down completely. Alas the motel is doomed. read more

So, we stopped in here at 2am on a Route 66 trip, I had called ahead to see if they had rooms. The next morning before 7am, the room between us and our parents started RENOVATION! We talked to the office and they said a manager would call us back and they never did! Then on our way back home I gave them the opportunity to make it up to us by stopping in again. Not only did they not refund our previous stay, but they only gave us half off 1 room and the pool was closed on a 95degree day! Then when I got to my room, there were flies everywhere! I live in a truck. So when we go to stay at hotels, we are always extremely excited. So after 'Googleing' hotels with truck-parking in Amarillo, I saw that this one had a 'sweetheart special' going on. You get the room, a steak dinner with your choice of dessert at the Steakhouse next door, and breakfast. The room was completely decorated in a country theme, with saloon shutters leading to the bathroom, shutters that completely block the sunlight through the window, suede comforter and pillow-cases, and wooden furniture. The bed was absolutely to-die-for comfortable. I haven't had a night's sleep like that in months. It was a huge king and was perfectly clean. The spa bathroom had a huge tub with jets! Extremely hot water and huge, fluffy towels and a matching suede shower curtain. The room comes equipped with a coffee pot, coffee, an ironing board, a hair-dryer, a new mini-refrigerator and a 32' inch flat-screen television with HBO and movie channels! There is wireless internet and you have to call the main office for the password. There is also plenty of parking, including vehicles with trailers, trucks and RV's. It is very conveniently located in the same lot as the Big Texas Steak Ranch, so unload your luggage and go get yourself a steak! Staff was so easy to work with and we were in and out without a hassle at all. WILL be back! read more

Please reconsider before staying here. It's definitely no frills so if that's what you want then by all means. The best words to describe the rooms are dingy, outdated, and worn. The shower was so short I had to crouch , and I'm five foot one. I could barely charge my phone because all of the outlets either didn't work, or were so loose my charger wouldn't stay in the socket. I don't know, maybe it's the intense steak smell or the parking lot full of kids running amuck; but, The Big Texan didn't impress me much. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine motel.... but it's only for certain persons. Maybe kids? People the love large steaks? My grandmother? Be wary of the "Horse Corral" building behind the main motel. The walls are made out of fiber-board and it's _paper_ thin. Thankfully the front desk staff was very helpful and switched my room. The new room was freshened up with "texan" stuff, but it was still a grey cinderblock room. We were so excited to visit the Big Texan Inn! We called ahead to make sure the Texas-shaped pool was open because we have three kids and you can't stay at a roadside motel unless it has a great pool! In fact, we were going to visit the Joy Motel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, but their pool is currently closed. Based on that, we changed our travel plans. We really like vintage, roadside motels! So, you can imagine our disappointment when, after we arrived, a maintenance man told us the pool was closed for cleaning (30 minutes). So, we waited a couple hours only to be told it wasn't opening at all because of some problem with the chemical levels. We'd been building up the kids' excitement the whole trip telling them we were going to "swim across Texas." So, with three very disappointed kids, my husband went and talked with the manager. He told her that we'd inquired about the pool being open before we left OKC and were assured it was open. Then she asked the question managers frequently ask disgruntled customers, "Who did you talk to, because..." So, the blame was going to shift to the person who took our reservation. Ugh. To make a long story short, they opened the pool for us, but only after the manager made some very weird phone call and then had us sign a piece of paper on which she scrawled a disclosure that stated we agreed to swim without a lifeguard. Very weird, and we wondered if the Big Texan Inn *ever* opens their pool. After they took the padlock off the gate for us, several guests started appearing. We were happy that we were able to open the pool for everybody! And, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the chemicals, although they needed to sweep the pool for leaves and small debris. The Big Texan Inn is a fun motel. I love the Big Texan sign and the decor had a lot of special touches. The outside is painted really cool, like a whimsical Western town. The bedspread, shower curtain, etc., all follow a Texas theme. It's not at all like your typical motel with sterile decor. But, the pool experience was a real bummer. Also, we ate at the Big Texan Steak House and while the food was terrific, I really don't want to spend $80 on lunch for a family of five. If you go with kids, they can easily split a plate. So, I would probably go back to the Big Texan, but only if we didn't want to swim. It's a great stop between OKC and New Mexico and still beats the chains by a long Texas mile. read more

We stayed here because it was next to the Big Texan Steak Ranch. It was OK, but not great. The staff was VERY nice, which counts for a lot. We were assigned a room on the second floor and there is no elevator. My knees are not what they used to be. They cheerfully gave us a room on the first floor. However, the place really needs a dedicated maintenance person. The fit and finish was suffering, the chairs creaked even before we sat in them and the wi-fi was marginal at best. The lighting in the bathroom was dim and had a odd pink hue. Worse, it flickered. The hot water ran out in less than 5 minutes, which made the showers we took brief. All in all, it was a one time deal. For the money it wasn't bad, but it could have been better! read more

We are on a road trip from Oregon so we called ahead to verify the pool was available for our kids, and we were told of course no problem, the pool is open and available we get there, no pool! The motel wasn't anything fancy but it's a clean place to lay your head. There's no microwave or fridge but we brought a cooler. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. My husband and I stopped in around 10:30pm Sunday night. We got the newly renovated and remodeled Room #125. We went in and saw after less than an hour of being in that room that there was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom above the shower. He had to call a number since it was after 11pm and no one working the front desk. She said that her boss said we could either get a refund and go to another hotel or just switch rooms with no refund whatsoever. Since it was midnight, we moved around the corner to Room #135. It was the bathroom, kitchen part where it fell really short. The room was terrible. The bed linens looked as if it had been washed 1000 times. Since I planned to eat at the Big Texan Steak Ranch, I figured I'd also stay at their matching western themed hotel. What an effing dump! It was filthy, floors were sticky, and my room was dark even with the shutters open! You had to walk past their dog park which was a small corralled grass area in the middle of the parking lot to get to their restaurant and it was chalk full of dog poop. I just got out of the car after a two day road trip, so I'm going to be lazy and just go pros and cons... Pros: Nice room! I appreciate a place that embraces a theme, so the cowhide-y bedspreads and wooden shutters and Wanted signs in the room made me smile. Comfortable bed and super amazing water pressure. Dog friendly! Only $10 extra per night for our little dog. There's even a (very small) off leash area that's fenced in. So great. Super duper friendly staff at the front desk. genuinely kind and chatty and friendly. Next door to their restaurant/bar so we had some dinner and maybe a tad too much beer and happily walked back to our room. Affordable. Our room plus taxes and the pet fee came right around $100, maybe it was $105. Cons: Thin-ish walls so the big family that arrived late-ish and settled into the rooms next to ours sounded super loud. Or, maybe just thin-ish windows? Or maybe just a loud family. Other reviews say there is wifi, but we couldn't even see a network to connect to so we assumed there wasn't any. Major bummer. The tv was smallish and kind of far from the bed so I felt like I had to have it turned up a little loud. The super detailed instructions for the coffee maker were great...if they were for the coffee maker in our room, but they didn't actually apply at all. Must have been for a different model or something. Overall much more good than bad. I'd stay there again and recommend it to a friend. This place was awesome! The outside looks like an old west town. Inside the rooms, it resembles a little cabin. The paneling on the walls is wood and all of the furniture is cedar. The bedspreads were patterned like cows. If you happen to have traveled with your horse (we didn't), there is also a horse hotel out back. There seemed to be quite a few horses out there. The water pressure was thunderous! It was great when we were showering, but not as great when our neighbors took their shower before we were awake. It was quite loud. This is certainly one of the oddest places I've every stayed. Still, I would go there again. Here's the deal -- it's cat city in the parking lot. In the 200 foot walk between the motel and the restaurant I saw eight cats. I saw about as many on the way back. I suppose they could be hanging out there because of the leftover steak bits that make their way to the dumpster, but what sort of cat prefers steak over fish? I know -- lions; but these were not lions, they were domestic house cats. Also, most of them were in pairs. If you know cats as I do, they are solitary creatures unless they have lived together. Now, for the rest of the story. After I checked in I went to the restaurant (The Big Texan Steakhouse) for dinner. Upon my return, my cats were nowhere to be found. They were wearing bells and not only could I not see them, I could not hear them. I've been through this sort of thing with one of my cats, who I am convinced is Harry Houdini reincarnated with whiskers, so I looked in all the usual places -- behind the headboard, behind the television console, etc. Nada. I thought I was going to die, and I thought if I came back to life I would die again when my wife killed me (she's going to join me in a few weeks at our vacation home). I went to the office to ask if anyone had been in my room. They checked and told me that nobody had been there. I returned to the room. Then I had a thought. About time, you say. You're right. I reached behind the base of the bed. Usually the bed bases have four sides to them and cats hide between the headboard side and the wall. This base had three sides; the headboard side was open. I lifted the mattress and then the box spring, and low and behold, there were my cats. Others had been there in the past as well, as the underside of the box spring was completely destroyed. My theory, which is mine and belongs to me (with apologies to Anne Elk) is that peoples' cats are hiding under their beds and the people cannot find them. They then assume that somehow their cats escaped and they hop back into their trucks or SUVs (this is Texas) and go their merry ways, leaving their hidden friends behind. The maids open the doors and the cats escape to the parking lot, where they stay and gorge themselves on steak until their cholesterol levels kill them. I let the office know of my theory and wrote a note the local SPCA. If you lost your cat there, you might want to check in again and have a look around. Also, the room itself was okay. It was comfortable, but dated. It had a definite Texas theme to it. The main benefit of this place is it is on the same grounds as the restaurant. Its price was reasonable. read more

Beautiful people. I have never met a more understanding or friendly staff. Definitely worth the stay. We unfortunately encountered some car problems and had to stay in town overnight but chose the right place to hang our hat. The theme was through and through the cutest. I love the big Texan brewery next door as it is walking distance. Everything is adorable but aging since they catered to our fathers from the 60s. Again I must stress if you want southern hospitality look no further, the big Texan opens it's arms like an old friend seeking warmth from your spirit. To put my review in a quick sentence: go to the Big Texan Inn! Now the full review. So, I am moving across the country and I decide to take I40 west, with one of my stops being in Amarillo. I had just driven from Memphis and arrived in Amarillo after a long 12 hour drive. I first checked out the Fairfield, and they wanted $140+ and so did the Holiday Inn down the street. Then, I decided to check out Yelp and they brought me here to the Big Texan Inn. I drove to the Big Texan Inn and was confronted by a huge steer (fake of course) and an awesome looking hotel. Each room is decorated on the outside differently (don't know if they are different in each room). For some reason, the price is $$ (which is also the same for the Fairfield and Holiday Inn).. This is very inaccurate, because the place should be $. I came in late, luckily they had a room available, traveling with just myself and I ended up paying a total of $64 (taxes included with AAA discount of $5). Also, if you buy a hotel room, you can claim a FREE 72 oz. steak (I think it has to be within the hour though). I wasn't ready for anything like that, so I just checked into my room. Also, you get a $2 off voucher for breakfast right next door at the Big Texan Steak Ranch. The room I stayed in was #210, the "Cattlemen's Hotel". The hotel was perfect.. especially for under $70. It was clean, spacious, and best of all it is unique! The tv was mounted along a huge decorate piece of cowboys, the bed sheets were almost like a suede like material with huge stars on the sides (good 'ol Texan stars). One of the coolest features of the room was the swinging wooden doors from the bedroom to the bathroom. This place is historic, has had it's share of famous visitors and is just overall a great place to crash for the night.. and it's cheap and not your normal hotel. The staff was beyond incredible, nice and very accommodating and again the place was CHEAP and CLEAN! What more can you ask for?? Oh you want food, too? Well across the street they serve good home cooked meals, and the breakfast buffet was delicious. I hope to be in Amarillo sometime again, just so I can stay at this place! Next door to the Big Texan Steak Ranch, although it was a little difficult to locate the door on account of the parking lot full of GIGANTIC VEHICLES. There are so many huge SUVs, trucks with extended cabs and/or giant tires, I just joined the crowd of (presumably) exercise-adverse folks and eventually ended up where I could check in. This is THE place to stop over in the area, if you ask me. Of course, you do miss out on taking the "free limo service" to the Steak Ranch. If you're staying in a motel on I-40, you get a ride in their dirty old Cadillacs with bullhorns on the front. Actually, they seem pretty keen on driving here in TX, I'll bet I could get away with calling for car service... Our room has log furniture & cow patterned bedspreads. Que Authentico! Thai is not a brand new 5 star motel but it is a very nice place to stay, like the old Country Western feel that reminds you of some movies I saw as a kid.The swimming pool is close due to Chinese Covid19 . The charm of this older Motel is satisfying for anyone that likes to older historic buildings. Well, all settled down and off to our Big Texan steak Ranch and Brewery Reservation. read more

I am giving the hotel 3 stars, but the experience 4 stars. I love the TX shaped pool & the "Texan" decor. Very cute place. With a little tlc, I think this place could be amazing. Either lower the price some, or renovate. $10 pet fee. The room itself was average. read more

I travel for work with tons of luggage. After letting Lisa the desk clerk know this. She still put me on the top floor. not for nothing,but I think you should put the tourists up top and the workers on the bottom floor. I did not care to carry 4 loads of luggage back up more stairs after I just took them up and down at the ABV.and yes I did say this to the clerk. She did not apparently give a poo. I hate Amarillo and dread having to come to this crappy city. this is just another fork in it. This is a cowboy themed motel that needs a massive overhaul. The walls are super thin - I can here the next door guest. The metal stairs are rusted to a point where the metal stairs have holes in them. If you fall on the stairs, get a tetanus shot. My entire room shakes when people walk by. I was in a room but the tv didn't work. No phones in room so in order to get help it was me walking back and forth from the office. Online they say $88 a night. I get here and they say $105 a night??? My recommendation if you want to sleep well come by, take a picture and the head to the hotels a block away. read more
