The private surfing lesson w/Nico for my daughter was AMAZING!!! She had so much fun and loved working w/him. We'll definitely be back because of Nico! However, my suggestion is if you're new, request to the beach for the demonstration because the other option (which is the room w/the surfboards) smells really strong of epoxy, acetone and other stuff (according to worker) and is so potent it will make you pass out. Lovely shop, good selection of coffee and goodies. Awesome customer service with the surf shop and surf rental. It was fast and easy to rent a board and they even gave me an outdoor locker to store my board, since it was a 1.5 mile walk to my condo from the shop. So very kind!!! Coffee: The only way to stay sane. First day on Oahu and I was feeling jet lagged. The two of us ordered an Ono Latte and Island Thai Latte at $6.50 each. It was a watery brew and does not delivery much caffeine. For $13, I was hoping it'll keep us up until noon but I was out and taking a nap shortly afterwards. Zzz. Drink coffee. Do stupid things faster with more energy! The first morning on Oahu was met with jet lag. I was up well before 6AM, with a three-hour difference felt in my bones. You know coffee was a must. This place is right across from the hotel I was staying at on Lewers St. so it was a no-brainer. We ordered a small iced Ono Latte and a small iced Island Thai Latte at $6.50 each. I like that everything here utilizes a dairy alternative. That said, the coffee left much to be desired. More flavor, more caffeine, more oomph! I felt my eyes and feet dragging not even an hour later. Aloha, my wife and I wanted a pick me up on caffeine after being up early and having an eventful morning so far. We didn't realize that there was this coffee cafe under our hotel (Hilton). I ordered a double shot espresso and my wife went for an iced coffee. While I was waiting for our drinks, I've browsed around the store. I'm not much of a surfer but it looked like it catered to mostly those customers and some casual clothes for beach goers. I instead over to the coffee section within the store and looked at their mugs and beans. We enjoyed our drink very much, I know espresso's aren't many folks go to for enjoying coffee but, I tend to enjoy the aroma and appreciate coffee at it's most rawest brewed form. I also want to keep the calories low and stay hydrated with water since Hawaii was still pretty hot during October/November during our stay...we walk a lot :) I implore you to venture the small businesses outside your hotel and not just the big businesses at Waikiki, it does help with business and what locals would like compared to what big companies showing touristy options. read more

It's hard to judge a place just based on a cup of coffee and a slice of banana bread. But they do advertise that the banana bread is voted the #1 banana bread. The coffee is good and the banana bread is delicious. Sweet, but not overly so. The shop sells crepes, Açaí bowls and other items, there's a sizable gift shop associated with it. Maybe I'm being soft on scoring because I'm on vacation in Hawaii (this coffee shop is connected with the hotel I'm staying at and I just got here), but the coffee and banana bread are good and the Staff seemed nice. Came here at 6:30 AM on a Saturday, there was only three other people there. This place feels like a surfy half-store half-cafe, with a cute kids corner, very family friendly. I'd definitely recommend coming here once to get gifts and have a calm, enjoyable morning. I myself would come back to try the other menu items. I was served quickly and my food took about ten minutes. The staff are friendly. I got the Dave's acai bowl and it was the healthiest one I've gotten in Hawaii so far. It was a big bowl, priced accordingly, and it was exactly what you'd expect from each ingredient on the ingredient list. The ingredients are simple and you can taste it, especially with the acai base not being sweet - it needs a good mix with the honey on the top. (Don't buy the honey from them, I went to the KCC farmer's market and the exact brand was selling there for cheaper). I think there was a lot of granola, just a tad too much since it made every bite so crunchy, but it wasn't bad overall. My acai base was a bit icy though, so based on how bland it is and the issues I have with the texture, I wouldn't buy another one from here. This was overall a very nice visit though. read more

EXTREMELY RUDE GIRLS WORKING THERE. We have been going here on our trip to get our morning coffee and today, the girl (brunette, in her 20s) making the coffee was so so rude I had to hold back from letting her have an earful. My husband ordered the espresso con panna but requested over ice , which we have been doing with no problem. When his order came out, it was just the espresso, with no cream or ice. Then we overheard the blonde girl taking the order saying "oh fuck did I forget to say..." implying they miscommunicated our order. So then the brunette just grabs the drink and put some cream on there with barely any ice. My husband then asked for more ice and they both made it seem like we asked for a million dollars. They said ice was $1 extra. Like what? They ended up pouring ice in our cup but their attitudes were so bad. The drink actually tastes nothin like how we've been enjoying it so I asked for it to be remade. The brunette copped and attitude and tried to say it's because we get it with ice so it changes the taste. I explained to her that's how we've been ordering it and this time just tasted extremely sour and not enjoyable. The whole encounter with her, was such a turn off and and unfortunate representation of a coffee shop. She was argumentative for no reason and we've said "thank you" multiple times, and not once did she acknowledge it. Literally, she has the worst attitude I've encountered all trip. This is such a cute little café and surf shop. It is very conveniently located for those that are staying around Waikiki. I tried their Dave's açai bowl, it was refreshing and a filling, however, the açai itself is a little bit icy. They also make really great lattes, the coffee is strong with a nice roasted flavor and lightly sweetened as well. read more

How can I say anything bad with my name on it? Dave's is a cozy coffee bar with bowls and other food items. They have an enormous amount of merch for sale as well as an attached surf shop. Anyway, the latte was really good. Smooth flavored coffee. The avocado toast on multigrain bread was delicious. They didn't skimp on the avocado but it may have too many chopped onions in there. Took surf lessons as a beginner and my instructor Pauly was super helpful and friendly. He first gives a surf demonstration before heading out to the water which was easy to follow. Pauly provided great tips and pointers on how to catch waves. The shop itself is clean and provides lockers for you to leave your belongings. I would recommend surf lessons from here. read more

I've visited this coffee shop for the past four days and had consistently a positive experience. That's why what happened this morning was so disappointing. Today, two younger staff members were unfriendly and dismissive from the start. I ordered a coffee and a milk for my 7-year-old, along with an ask to put a sticker on my lid. They were annoyed with my request and said there were none, and when I mentioned it hadn't been a problem before, they just completely ignored me. They then put a ton of ice in the milk and were extremely annoyed when I asked for it to be without all the ice. The employee then got ruder, reacting negatively to my daughter's milk order. While I was still standing there, the employee loudly screamed across the shop, "Don't let that lady order milk again--it's wasteful." My daughter heard this and was understandably upset, thinking she had done something wrong. When I pointed out that I was still there and the employee was talking negatively about me by calling me wasteful - the employee's response was, "I know," with no apology or acknowledgment. An adult staff member did step in and seemed genuinely concerned that the staff was being rude to me, but the two employees continued to double down on their behavior. I left feeling disrespected and, more importantly, upset that my child was made to feel bad over something so simple as ordering milk. I hope management sees this and addresses it. No customer--especially a child--should be made to feel embarrassed for their order and be called wasteful for something they paid for. read more

I had a surf lesson with Peter and it was awesome!! I have never surfed before, but I still caught so many waves. The board was comfortable and the instructor was sooo helpful. He made sure we had a good experience. I would recommend getting a rash guard since my arms were a bit scratched up, but the rash went away in a day. Also they offer lockers free (if you rent a lock it's $5) and parking is validated nearby at the Embassy Suites (free!) for 4 hrs. read more

KODI our surf instructor and CORAL who facilitated in coordinating our check in process were phenomenal! I was initially nervous as I have NO EXPERIENCE, and Kodi was very patient and encouraging when I was out in the water. He took time to make sure that we understood the safety of being out in the water. We were able to both run through the steps of standing up on the board as well as how to turn and navigate the board in the water, which was very helpful. We did not feel rushed, and we both got very much individualized attention the entire time. I was even able to stand up with the guidance of Kodi. I highly recommend coming here as the instructors are very experienced. Kodi has over 25 years of experience surfing (plus he is a local )and you can tell with the level of patience and his ability to ensure our safety in the water. While my friend and I were at different levels he was able to coordinate to ensure that we both had an awesome time in the water and no one felt left out. I will definitely be back. Everyone was very kind. Giving this review 5 stars for the surfing experience. Josh was an amazing instructor. So encouraging and super helpful. We had a blast!! We got tshirts too which were very cute. The coffee shop took FOREVER to make our drinks and the line wasn't long (Tuesday 1030am). My drink was made incorrectly so I had to have it fixed. Big Wave's is one of the only cafe's open as early as a nearby chain. I was excited to try somewhere different and Big Wave's is fantastic. It has numerous options on their menu. I loved their breakfast sandwich, it was only a lighter panini bread and was filling. Their açaí bowl had great flavor and fillings in it. The service was good, the food came out in 5-10 minutes. The cafe at Halepuna got weird hours so stopped by Big Wave to get some coffee. Ordered the honey latte and a standard iced latte. The espresso drinks were just okay that day. Unfortunately I think it was a bit over extracted. I do love how the drinks sizes here are a bit bigger. Service here is a bit slow when I went. Only 2 people behind the counter and sometimes you'd have to wait for someone to take your order. The staff actually just had me go through the POS system to place my own order, which was a first. This review is for the surf lessons/shop. My 12yo wanted to do a surfing lesson and Big Wave Dave had many good reviews. Online booking was easy. We did a private 1:1 lesson and requested Krystal as I wanted her to have a female instructor. I love showing my girls female athletes in action. When you make your reservation, you get to choose your instructor. The site only has bios of 4-5 of them so you know nothing about the other names so it's a complete guessing game. When we arrived, check in was easy but found out we had a male instructor. I was surprised after reassuring my daughter that she'd have a female instructor. But I didn't complain figuring there was nothing that could be done since it didn't seem like there were any other instructors on shift. But this was definitely NOT appreciated. Cody was her instructor and he was good so no complaints about him. He took her out and she was able to stand on several waves. The beach entry for lessons is close by thru an alleyway between the Hukelani and Sheraton . read more

It could have been her first day but she didn't know the menu item, and my husband had to question her and point to the menu when she asked some questions about the order that shouldn't be asked. We also found out she put in my husbands order incorrectly. Ugh. My husband got a quad over ice with some whip. I guess she took the order wrong, so it was a hot espresso and some whip. And she didn't know how to charge for a quad. I didn't have confidence in my chai latte, but my chai latte was actually really good, it was better than most. Located in Waikiki at embassy suites. Right near yard house. Service was friendly and quick. Also they do have coconut milk, surprisingly not many in Waikiki have this.
