The produce department was fine. What I really don't understand about Big Y is the "store within a store" concept (that holds all of the better-for-you brands). Why not just mix all of the good products with the bad products? LOL I don't live in CT, if I did, I'm not sure how much I would shop at Big Y... but I'm glad I stopped in. Incredibly overpriced. As an example, Big Y charges about $21 for a quart of Ben's organic maple syrup. Market Basket charges $12.99 for the same product. Big Y charges $8.99 for a small bag of Wonderful pistachio nuts. Market Basket charges $5.99 for the same product. I could go on and on and on but in my experience Big Y generally charges 20 to 40 percent more than Market Basket. Are they just being greedy? read more

Having lived in Groton, Connecticut on and off since 2005, this Big Y supermarket has made vast improvements from what it used to be. The grocery aisles were fully stocked, seasonal items were available, The bakery had a wide variety of cakes, muffins, Brad's, donuts, and bagels. There is freshly made pizza, sandwiches to order, and sushi. Now that I am vegan, I have found this Big Y location as one of the best places in the Groton area to find foods to support my plant-based dietary needs. As I walk through the store. Oh, the staff was very friendly and asked me if I needed any help. The store itself was clean and full of fresh produce and fully stocked aisles and display cases. Been shopping here for years. Prices are on the high side but the staff for the most part is friendly. HOWEVER, Big Y corporate has the gaul for charging for CHEAP PAPER BAGS THAT ALWAYS BREAK. This happened to me just last night. As I walk into my home the bag tears and a jar of tomato sauce falls on our tile floor and breaks. Tomato Sauce and Glass everywhere. I am glad that no one here was injured. ANOTHER INCIDENT that happened about a year ago is my getting SICK from BAD FISH. I had diarrhea for three (3) days. I called Big Y cust srvc at their corporate offices and mainly got lip service. BEWARE, READ THE REVIEWS - Many Complaints of Big Y selling rotten food!! My wife and really love this Big Y. The people that work there are very friendly and helpful. No matter at the Deli counter, Meat or Fish counter they offer advice and customize your order upon request. We recently ordered 10 Charcuterie platters for a party and the Deli manager created beautiful trays. Each was unique and artistically put together. Also, she and the Store manager helped bring it out to my car and figure out how to put in without squishing everything. We just moved back here and I'm very disappointed by the lack of cashiers every-time we go in ! There's at most 2 registers open and crazy long lines . Tonight is 12/23 and you'd think they'd have extra people in for the holiday last minute rushes around the evening hours .... nope the normal 2 cashiers on . And the produce is always moldy , not just a few things I find gone bad but several that are putrid . I just don't get it . Customer Service. I have to say I spent many-a years as a restaurant manager and people don't understand why they cannot have their food immediately when they want it. It is really wild. But now I work for a child centered corporation and we needed to organize an End of the Year Party for about 60-75 parents, toddlers and their siblings. Big Y pizza has alway been our go to! However, this year was delegated to an outside of our center person, and with some ridiculous back and forth emails... I made the executive decision to just call Big Y Groton, and spoke to the nice guy who answered the phone, happened to be Mike (Pizza manager). Who had no problem making two party pizzas ready for pick up Monday morning at 11 am regardless of what it said on the website. I was trilled. Well - just to throw some hate toward my colleague she proceeded to tell me to cancel this order because she didn't want to drive 20 minutes from New London to Groton back to New London and preferred to order 10, $19.99 pizzas from a closer location. WOW, looks like our little non profit has a budget of like $300 per center party now ... so good luck to her... but anyways Mike was super awesome. I love this Big Y by the way anyways. :) read more

I went shopping here when I was staying in the area for two weeks and in desperate need of some groceries. There was a pretty wide selection. While I wasn't incredibly picky about what to get, there was a lot of variety and everything that I had on my list was in the store. The store is huge and easy to get lost in. It can be pretty overwhelming if you don't know what you are looking for. I'll give it four stars since I found some absolutely fantastic coffee here that I drank throughout my trip. read more

I think it's very clean and well stocked with a variety of brands. I've always found people helpful when I needed it. The sandwich lady is kinda grouchy along with the toothless woman cashier. Went to get a grinder at the Deli at lunch time today. The fresh grinders there are usually verify good. When the clerk got to the end of making the grinder, she said they were out of lettuce and spinach. She said there is shostage of lettuce. So I got the grinder (full price). Went around the corner and there was plenty of lettuce in the produce dept. I bought a bag of shredded lettuce to put on my grinder....an additional $2. What is wrong with this???? I bought a few live lobster that we were going to cook at home and one of the females was carrying eggs. Not ok. Customer service told me I could exchange it for another one, which doesn't instill much confidence that they wouldn't just sell it to someone else or cook it. I decided to give my local Big Y supermarket another chance! As always I chose to use the self checkout,despite having issues in the past . So after gathering my groceries,I headed to the self checkout. As usual I was sensing a presence behind me lo and behold it was the self checkout deputy! Mind you, I don't care ‍ for having my personal space invaded so I nicely asked her to step away. I finished ringing my few items and paid for it. Next thing I know her comes Barney Fife telling me I neglected to ring up my cat food whereupon I asked deputy Fife how she figured that?? She asked for my receipt and dammed if she was wrong! No apology was given! I promptly told her if she had been doing her job correctly she would have noticed the man to my right who walked away with a large bag of shrimp and 2 packs of pork chops!!!! I really hate Big Y. When this Big Y opened a few years ago it was nice but it seems to just have gone downhill. All their carts are old rusty metal and seem to have 2-4 wonky wheels. All their employees seem rather miserable. I once stood at their sandwich making counter for ten minutes while the guys working there saw me but continued to talk to each other in the back area (it's more in the middle). The bakery people usually seem friendly enough. The checkout staff seem to hate life or working there or maybe both. Overall they are more expensive than the other local grocery stores, unless something is on sale. They do have some very good deals when things go on sale. Their shopper reward program has a slot machine thing that you can play when you check out. This must be a big hit with the casino crowd. You can win silver and gold coins from it that act as coupons on certain items. If you go there enough eventually you will have a nice collection of silver coins stuffed in a drawer that you will never remember to bring back and actually use. read more

As the closest grocery store to my home, I'm often in here picking up odds and ends. The produce at this stores varies from good to great dependent on the day. The employees are fairly courteous and able to typically easy to find if you have a question. This store has a decent selection of international foods and their prices on pet items is pretty good. If there was one negative it would be the BIg Y savings card. Their frequent buyer program is a bit strange causing you to collect silver coins that are given to you as you spend money in the store. It's somewhat annoying to me as I not only have to keep their store card in my wallet but also all of those silly silver & gold coins. You'd think they might be able to create a way for the coins to be electronically linked to your account or something - that would be really nice. read more

What can I say? I have mixed feelings. They very overpriced, but they have good products. They have a good seafood section, but their sushi is VERY EXPENSIVE. Not worth it. I made Sushi at home and it was much cheaper to buy what you need then to buy it ready made. It's very clean and orginzed. The staff are kind of . . . what's the word . . . robot like. They don't really communitcate with you and they don't offer help unless you ask them for it. They don't even say hi when you come to check out. They have a coin game that you can play. But they don't tell you about it. I didn't really know about it until a friend said something to me. So, I guess this place is okay. But I don't like coming here unless I really have to. read more

Big Y seems to deliberately make it difficult to recycle bottles. I have spent thousands of dollars there in the last 15 years but will never go there again. Multiple times they have waste my time getting a few dollars in refunds because they don't maintain the machines and the staff are slow and surly emptying them. The space is also smelly and filthy. I have complained to the manager and emailed the company, but nothing changed. I read that the Stonington store has the same problems. read more

This really isn't even a review for Big Y as a whole, but more for one of their departments. The sushi chefs there are absolutely fantastic. Big Y is like shopping w/friends. everyone is very nice. not only the fish, but the meat is excellent. don't try their fresh oj unless u want to get hooked, no other oj will taste right again! if u need a friend at the pharmacy just visit Dan and u r set. ask the service desk anything and they will help. in short,(?) just give it a try for awhile and u will be hooked. also, all of their prepare meals are very good, I especially like the soups, and will make ur lif easier. read more

I really hate Big Y. I grew up with Big Y as my main grocery store in Western MA. Then I lived in FL for several years where I became accustomed to the awesomeness of Publix supermarkets. Then I moved back to Western MA. The difference is night and day. Big Y is overpriced, never has exactly what I am looking for, the layout of the store seems really weird, (hard to find stuff in a hurry, seems to be designed to "trap" you) the staff is always, extremely rude, inattentive, and hard to track down when help is needed. BTW, went to buy a cold sandwich with EBT, they did not allow it. Never had this problem in any store over many states. Screw Big Y, taking my business to Super Stop and Shop from now on. read more

I contacted Big Y HQ customer service yesterday based on the experience I had in their Groton, CT store on 12/15/15. Well let me say that their customer service leaves little to be desired. The customer service rep told me that their policy with regards to buying gift cards is if you pay by check, you must be a Big Y customer. Ok, this I understand, but I was paying by credit card. The rep then told me that they should only have asked for a photo id. However, this is not what happened. The customer service rep then told me that they would contact the store. That's it. Nothing else. No apologies for refusing my money, no compensation for the person I was buying the gift for, nothing. This more than solidifies my opinion of the store. For whatever reason, they have stopped selling Edy's Ice Cream. Person at customer service didn't know why. If they have made a decision like that, don't customers deserve an explanation!?! We think Edy's is better than the other brands and shouldn't have to settle for less. Maybe this is just another reason to do more shopping at Stop & Shop or Walmart. read more
