I've come here a couple times, however this last time rubbed me the wrong way...My party of 2 came in midday on a Sunday looking to get an assorted box of cookies and 2 eclairs. Nothing crazy. We were greeted by a taller big guy kindly at first-- that is until he heard our order. As soon as he heard that we wanted to pick our own cookies, he huffed and sighed taking out the box...which fine, we have both worked retail and understand the mid-day burn out. We decide to keep the box light with 8 cookies. Instead, he points to the pre-packaged cookies with about 30 cookies wrapped up. I look at them and thank him for the offer, but that we would like a smaller amount. Another head shake and sigh. We proceed to pick out our cookies and thank him heartily...all with no reply from him. We were simply coming in to order cookies and left feeling like we did something wrong. After that negative interaction, we decided to shake it off and eat some cookies in our car by the beach. Unfortunately, our cookies were stale and many of the cookies tasted the same despite being completely different kinds...2/5 experience, however I will update with another visit to see if that changes or if I just came at a bad time. I grew up in town and since moved away, in the su My family and I used to make it a point to stop here every summer, and we were looking forward to coming back with my wife and son. This place used to be a gem, so I'm not sure if there's new ownership or what changed. Because it's a small town, I think it's important to support local businesses, but I also want other great sandwich shops to get the recognition they deserve. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. We ordered an eggplant parmesan, and it was mostly sauce, bread, and unmelted provolone with very little eggplant. The rainbow cookies were just okay and tasted like the boxed cookies you can buy at Walmart. The turkey grinder was average at best--the deli meat seemed low quality, and the bread tasted stale. The restaurant itself has also become run down, with clutter throughout the dining area. I do want to give credit to the employee working the front counter. He was clearly doing his best, but he was completely understaffed. We placed our order 25 minutes ahead of time, and our sandwiches were already sitting on the counter when we arrived. It still took another 20 minutes to receive them because he was handling the register, answering the phone, taking new orders, and processing pickups all by himself. That wasn't his fault it seemed like a staffing issue. It's a shame because this used to be one of our favorite stops every summer. I hope they can turn things around, but based on this experience, there are better sandwich shops in town. read more

I woke up this morning with a strong desire to have apple turnovers from the bakery. I travel about an hour every few months to go and get apple turnovers from this bakery. I absolutely love them. They are perfect. They have the perfect amount of apples in them and the top of them is covered in that sugar frosting, which I love. They are the perfect amount of flaky. The inside is adorable. That's a cute little place. For the most part, the service is normally pretty good there. We also grabbed two bacon, eggs, cheeses, and a cookie, which I forgot to photograph because I was so hungry that I scarfed down my sandwich. read more

Came here with a coworker today on a lunch break as I have had their grinders before and they were very good. We both ordered chicken cutlet salads. After about 10 minutes, we were told that they were ready, we were both a little confused because there were two bags sitting on top of the counter, which were definitely subs. We politely reminded the clerk that we ordered chicken cutlet salads... she gave us a very unfriendly stare as well as an eye roll. The picture is what we were given in the end. This place is a gem. Absolutely ok'd school Italian Bakery doing business for eons in Niantic. It's located right on thr Main St. Easy street parking right out front & their own parking lot. It's a cute little shop with huge windows so tons of natural light. It was very clean. The wait staff were bustling about getting people's orders. Everything is homemade. There are tons of cookies, muffins & pastries. I was salivating from the huge assortment of delectables. I stopped in specifically to pick up a sandwich. So glad I did! I ordered a Turkey, provolone, LTMO, spicy mustard. The bread was divine & the sandwich was freshly made with a touch of cracked black pepper. I ordered a Chicken Cutlet salad ($12.95). What I got was about 1/2 cup of diced lettuce and 6 thin slices of tomato with olive oil dressing and 2 broken slices of processed chicken cutlets (not thoroughly warmed up - you can tell they were previously frozen). My husband thought someone took a bite from one of the broken cutlet pieces as that's exactly what it looked like. Needless to say, I did not eat this disgusting meal. I should have taken a photo of this $12 'salad' - the most odd thing I've ever seen. My husband's sausage and pepper grinder was supposed to come with peppers and onions - it had none. Never going back to this place again. I highly doubt that anyone there baked any of their baked goods - rather, I would bet that they buy it elsewhere (or buy them as frozen items). read more

I am a local and have had bad experiences here before where my order was completely wrong but I have always gone back because I really believe in eating local and supporting small businesses. We are all human and make mistakes but today was a different story. Today, I ordered two chicken cutlet subs with lettuce tomato and mayo. On both orders all I received was chicken and bread. When I called to explain the situation I said I would like to come back to get my correct order and would like service recovery. When I arrived they gave me the new sandwiches (which were still made incorrectly) but I was told they were not going to refund me for what I ordered. They said I either got a refund or I got new sandwiches made. I was met with such resistance and the manager who knew I was coming because I spoke with her on the phone stepped outside very coincidentally as soon as I walked in and she saw me holding subs in my hand. I had to wait for 10 minutes to speak with her and when she came in I was greeted with a, "what's going on here" there was never an apology for making me drive 30 minutes out of my way and no ownership for the mistake that was made. In the end I did get a refund and the sandwiches but it was after 10 more minutes of explaining if any company makes a mistake they own it, fix the problem and provide the customer with some service recovery. Today was the last time my family and I will be coming in here. There are much better bakeries for baked goods and deli sandwiches with much better customer service right down the road. Some bakeries or lunch spots I recommend are Sift bakery, Gigi's or if you would like to drive a little bit farther I also recommend Mystic Market in Old Saybrook or my personal favorite Walt's Deli in Old Saybrook. Please support local businesses that also care about their locals and not just summer people who give them business for one season. read more

Whenever I'm in the area, I stop in for a box of cookies. The woman who was working the counter yesterday afternoon was lazy and rude. She told me they had pounds of cookies already wrapped to-go and pointed to them on the countertop. I told her that I wanted to pick my own cookies from the case and have them boxed. She rolled her eyes in disgust and said, "Ok, so what do you want?" I told her one number at a time which ones I wanted. When I came home and opened the box, she had put in cookies that I didn't ask for, and left out cookies that I did ask for. If im going to spend $15 dollars on a box of bakery cookies, you better be willing to give me what i ask for and do it with a smile! That rudeness and total ineptitude just cost you a customer! Tried out the bakery for breakfast. Ordered several breakfast sandwiches and a side. Bagel sandwiches were good but lacked seasoning. The croissant sandwich (ham, egg and cheese) was decent but was a bit greasy. Home fries were too greasy and not seasoned properly. I think the lack of seasoning is a northern thing or based on who was cooking. I'd recommend them hiring a soulful person from the south. Not set up for eating inside. A couple of tables but all were filled with crumbs. A few flies inside landing on there bagels and cookies were noted. Service by the cashier was good. He was friendly and attentive to customers. Got a grinder for dinner and their baklava. They nailed the grinder! Key to a great grinder is the bread and fresh ingredients. The roll was perfect,, the tomatoes juicy and the lettuce very crispy and fresh. They seasoned it perfectly. Delicious. Baklava was also done perfectly. When hitting the book barn, this is right across the street from the Downtown location. Must visit! The staff was friendly. I purchased a pound of Italian cookies, which were varied in texture and flavor. They also have cakes, breads and pastries. My only suggestion would be a separate line or system for people who have called ahead to pick up their food. I will come back and update this review when I see some improvement. As of late I have been disappointed. Twice now I have ordered a grinder with crushed red pepper. Each time, my grinder is loaded with roasted red bell peppers. That's not what I asked for. Yesterday I ordered a turkey grinder with mayonnaise and mustard. I received a grinder with mayo, mustard AND KETCHUP! What is going on back there? I'm not the only one because as I was waiting for my grinder, another gentleman who made an order the day before was threatening to call the owner because they didn't have it ready for him at all. It appeared they didn't even have it written down. The long-time staff member said, "you should order it when I'm here" which is nice, but that is not a long term solution.
