I liked this Northampton Big Y until yesterday, August 9. A sign clearly stated that Wild caught King Crab selling for $7.99. When I asked for a few pounds from a guy, the lady nearby raised her voice , yelling that the King Crab is selling for $9.99, not $7.99. I pointed out the sign, and the lady said she did not make the sign. She angrily repeated the same phrases three times, intimidating me like I don't understand English. She grabbed the sign and hid it to cover up the mistakes. They called the manager as I had done something wrong. Two managers came. Manager Rob professionally apologized for the mistakes. During the whole time the lady and the staff had an attitude problem. Not only did they try to cover up the mistakes, but they also treated the customers like idiots. read more

The few times I've gotten to a Big Y, I've enjoyed shopping there. This one is no exception and perhaps it's one of their flagship stores? It was also convenient that I was also looking for anearby package store, and this one happened to be one of the ones in Massachusetts which sells liquor - and a nice inventory of it at that. The produce was very fresh, including the packaged tubs. Since Northampton doesn't permit stores to use plastic bags any more, your options are to either bring reusable ones of your own, or to buy their bags. as a supermarket, Big Y can't be beat. great selection, high quality, fair prices. so, why the bad review? it's for one thing, the fried fish. we've been getting the formerly excellent fried fish from the seafood department - friendly service, delicious fish. we just brought a triple order home. it consisted of 3 minuscule fish fritters. each one was under a quarter pound, 80% batter, 20% fish, overcooked, and oily. it was a classic: the food tasted awful, it was inedible...and such small portions. When they say "world class, American owned family market"they aren't messing around. This place is really WORLD class. Every year on Labor Day weekend I stop here to get Halloween candy for trick or treaters and they have HUGE piles of it. Every kind you could imagine and I love that it's out during the holiday weekend. You can stop in on your way to a BBQ and get a few dozen hot dogs (their cheese filled one's are awesome!) and they usually have great sales like buy one 64oz mayonnaise get three free and then fill up the rest of your cart with nothing but candy. Boom. Also, a little known fact...if you ask the password to Rick behind the butcher counter he'll sharpen your kitchen knives for you. Every few years I stop by with my whole 28 piece Ginsu knife kit and Rick is always thrilled to make them all crazy sharp. Where else around Northampton can you get that done for FREE!!? read more

Big Y in Northampton isn't usually my go-to grocery store, but after shopping at this location last week I may have to start shopping here more often. The store itself has a unique layout, but once you are used to it shopping becomes a bit easier. This particular location has a phenomenal hot foods section as well as a great selection of fruits and vegetables. The wine and beer section here is a bit smaller than others I have been to, but they had exactly what I needed. The staff here was very polite and in the end I found all the ingredients I needed at a reasonable price. At times the prices at Big Y can be more expensive than the competitors, so looking out for their sales is always something to be mindful of. read more

I don't go to this Big Y often enough but I will be going forward. The customer service has been great every time I go there. The last experience was today buying seafood. I don't know much about different cuts. I talked with Tyler from seafood who was awesome! He took the time to go over the different options and turned me on to the great deal of the day - the salmon! The pieces were fresh and were delicious for dinner. Thank you Tyler and Big Y for making me happy to spend my money with you. Also got a great bottle of wine to drink with my salmon there! We ordered sandwich platters for our second meal at our wedding. The deli managers, Chris and Bryan, were both very friendly and efficient. Our sandwich platters were excellent with fresh bread, great sliced meats, veggies on point and nice presentation. The sandwiches got eaten right up and were the perfect solution to a hungry crowd. Was in Big Y Northampton around early PM to pick up an order of fried Haddock and fried Sea Scallops. When I arrived home with the food, I removed the fish and scallops from the boxes to warm them up. The scallops were sitting in a pool of grease that had congealed, along with other unidentifiable bits and chunky pieces, as was the Haddock. The seafood is supposed to be fresh. The fries were the only food item that wasn't in a pool of grease and were crisp and cooked well. As has been the case recently, the condiments are missing or the coleslaw has been forgotten. Not too long ago I could allways count on my orders being properly prepared. At this time I am totally disgusted and feel that the preparer just didn't give a hoot. My daughter had to do some grocery shopping for her apartment/dorm so she suggested that we try Big Y Supermarket located on King St. in Northampton. We've never been to one before (except for Dominique) since we don't have this chain of store in the eastern part of Massachusetts. We usually see a store along the highway every time we visit our daughter in NoHo. I say, we were impress with the place since it is huge, clean, very presentable and organized. There were a lot of products different from other grocery stores and also some local farms or produce are sold by the store. I was amazed by how they stacked and presented their products that I won't be surprised if they hired a psychologist or marketing expert to delve into the mind of shoppers and know what they want. The shelves were well stacked and brimming with a variety of brands so sometimes you really have to look at each item closely so that you won't miss a product worth discovering. One delightful discovery was Talenti Gelato. We bought a pint each of Double Dark Chocolate & Sicilian Pistachio (this taste soooooo sinfully rich & good). They have a huge section called "Table & Vine" with a good selection of wine from different countries, notably named and identified as to which cheese, dish or event it would be best paired with. Nice! Now I won't have to ask the store clerk for help since they have already set it up. They even have their own food court and you can order hot foods and a variety of other dishes. The bakery bakes it own bread, pastries & more that I even could feel the heat from the oven when the baker took out some freshly baked breads...... hmmmm! so heavenly.... I told my hubby that next time we have to bring a cooler with us if we want to do some shopping here.... read more

Northampton has banned plastic bags, fine--then give me complimentary paper bags to carry away my $200 weekly grocery purchase, like retailers world-wide have been doing for at least a century. My family easily spends $7000 per year on groceries, and not a dime of it will go to a store that charges for bags The nerve. read more

Was allways impressed with the quality and and service at Big Y Northampton. Within the last few months, U've purchased slices of pizza that have burned crusts. Mot buying anymore as the taste isn't pleasant. Also the pizzas in general are not as good as they were a year or 2 ago. I remember buying a Margarita pizza that was great tasting. Not anymore. Subs are still good at this time. Also fruit pies are not being cooked properly especially the strawberry rhubarb pie. The strawberries are mushy and the rhubarb is undercooked and crunchy. Its hard to rate a supermarket and give it four stars, but I'm confident with this one. The diverse sections of pre-made foods are great and the alcohol section (nice wine selection and good beer prices) is what really bumps this to the 4 star level. This is one of the more newer locations, which helps as they have done great in upkeep. They usually have long lines at peak hours, so this is not my first stop and the produce can be from way outta town. Buy food at river valley, buy booze here, go home, and enjoy! read more

This Big Y really puzzles me. I remember when this store opened back in the early 1960s, when there was a Sealtest Flavorland ice cream and sandwich shop annexed to the store and every Tuesday night they'd have a drawing for $50-worth of free groceries. Well, fast forward to 2017 when the World Class Market must compete with co-ops and whole foods. What is puzzling is that it seems while this store strives to be PC (politically correct, that is) they have lots of managers ---- young men flitting around in white collars and ties with fashionably coiffed hair, while very competent women (at the deli, florist, and fish departments, to name a few) are marginalized and not recognized for their contribution to the 'greater good' of that store. Que pasa? That being said, the fish department is terrific and the woman who manages that department does an extraordinary job of displaying the goods and makes that store shine. And the ladies at the deli are incredibly personable and professional, and some even wear wonderfully artistic hats! Mixed emotions about this store. As PC as they try to be, with rainbows here and there, diversity, and all the rest, its management is still monopolized by men, and this observation is not to exploit the 'sexist' meme, but to expose an honest observation about this store. read more

Beware the deceptive specials advertising. Big Y's 'buy one get two free' specials don't disclose that the price of the 'one' has been significantly inflated as the special begins. Often there are end cap displays offering 'buy one get one free' with no pricing information. Last week the store was offering a 'buy one get two free' sspecial on potatoes. I picked up TWO bags, thinking that I couldn't use three bags before leaving town, and was expecting to get one free bag. At the check out I was charged full price for BOTH bags, the explanation being that I needed to take three bags to trigger the special discount. This made no sense, unless the check out software is clunky. For groceries and meats, Big Y is my store of last resort. However, the freshly baked pizza is usually very good. read more

Big Y is 'my' grocery store. I love that they carry local vegetables, like Swaz's potatoes and Wanzyck corn. I also adore the baggers - Bushra, Glenn and Eddie are fabulous, as is Mary (with the injured wrist). But the meat department is my favorite. There's a big guy named Chuck that works there who is so helpful, pleasant and smart, with a great smile. He always helps me pick out the best cuts, and he's always right - and SO patient with picky, middle-aged women like me. I have shopped at Big Y for over twenty years and usually had a pleasant experience ( except for their baggers who can't seem to ever get it right). However, the Northampton store has recently undergone serious remodelling and now someone has decided to make the customers pay for it, literally. Prices have risen incredibly over this summer (2017) and they are even charging a dime for the flimsly, one use only, paper bags. The workers are generally very nice, but I simply can't afford to shop there anymore. Greed is NOT good or profitable in the long run if you lose customers because of it. read more

The food is crappy, the packaging wasteful, and to top it all off in 2014 they had a huge sign telling their customers to reject the recycling bill. Their higher-up staff are rude as well. I do not like anything about this store and shopping there is a miserable experience. read more

This store is a good Big Y...Meat Department is Awesome, Great Vegetables and Fruit, Fish Market is also Awesome - get take out for Fridays, Deli is also Awesome along with Bakery who if you cannot find something on the floor they will check their supplies for you All of the above areas the employees are very helpful, courteous and pleasant. I gave this Big Y a 3 Star because their cashiers and baggers are another story all together. Cashiers just throw everything down the belt do not separate bakery especially bread or chips, so you have bottles of soda crashing into and damaging you food. The baggers are even worse if that is possible! They are slow and could care less how they bag your groceries. Again have had my bread put in a bag with turnip, potatoes and carrots...flat as a pancake when I got home, cup cakes are turned upside down and chips are crushed because bottles of soda rolled over them and then they were put in with vegetables. Bagger just do not care whatsoever because it is not their food. The women from the Mideast are the worse. They are the slowest because they are hoping you will bag for yourself. Never smile so you can tell they hate their jobs and do not want to be there. In their country they do not work and you can tell they are mad that they have to work in this Country like everyone else. Friday late afternoons are a busy day like Thursday and Saturdays .3. .63.yet it takes more time to get through the checkouts! This Store needs to train their front end on how to properly separate foods going down the belt and how to bag groceries so that items are not squeezed or damaged. Paul and Gerry D made this a priority and made sure all front end employees know how to sort and bag. To bad Big Y has gotten away from this since if it was not for this I would do all my shopping at Big Y. But I hate getting home and have damaged food! A big shout out to Rose, the assistant Manager at the Northampton, MA Big Y. I had an attack of hypoglygemia while in the store. I asked for a place to sit down. Within a minute, Rose was sitting down with me and giving me glycemic tablets, coke and peanut butter crackers. She was there for 10 minutes until I stabilized. She also offered to call paramedics but I knew I didn't need them. What a generous and lovely person. You've got a loyal customer now. read more
