And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

We dropped off our little frame with our mothers in it. The server originally asked us to place it wherever we see fit, but the owner (she has the manager vibe) came over and helped us picked an even better spot! Service was what I thought was slow, but then we learned that Dutch people are very customer-focused, so we had to initiate an eye contact and signal to them that we are ready to close our check. I also found out that tipping is not required. Who would have thought? Oh, and also water is not free. Lastly, be sure to make a reservation because this place very packed for the duration of our meal and some people got turned away.

We were ever so lucky to nab a table on a busy busy Friday evening…read moreand even though we were a tad loud (read: drunk), this small fine dining restaurant was exactly what we needed! As you're walking in.. you wonder if you've stumbled into a completely different realm. It was small, big enough only for around 25 seats but it feels warm and welcoming, with great mood lighting. The staff were attentive and nothing was too much to ask. We ended choosing 3 courses with extra oysters to start and matching wines. Starting with bubbly to match the oysters, white wine to match the entree of mackerel, then red to match the main meat dish, and to finish- a sweet dessert wine with some sweet dessert. All of the sweetness was topped with grated chestnut, that had every person licking their plates clean. Even though we were a rather large and boisterous group, everyone was attended to and looked after. I was also watching the staff interact with the other tables (big and small) and they too looked as at ease as we did. All in all, it was the perfect Friday night find. I just hope I can remember to stumble into this little hot spot again with a bit more purpose (read: less drunk)!

The servers were very friendly and attentive. They don't have a menu, so it's always a surprise menu and you can choose between 3, 4, or 5 courses. We went with 3 courses and had the extra request that we don't get the same dishes so we can try 6 different things. Every meal, including the amose bouche, was creative, visually beautiful, and super tasty!!! Our main courses were a truffle stuffed guinea fowl with lentils and a white fish in beurre blanc with a potato cake and both had very interesting and flavorful sauces and tiny veggies. Hmmmmmm, I wish I had more tiny veggies to eat right now...

I went with the favorites menu and each dish was beautifully plated. The space itself is quite large with lots of tables spaced apart so it wasn't crowded. The oyster was delicious and very creamy. The butter was excellent. The desserts were a bit lacking.

Apple Maps told me we were less than 1/2 mile away so we headed over there. Located just off a canal on a pedestrian walkway basically at the start of the Red Light District, we arrived soon after they opened and got a nice table near the bar. Forget ordering what you usually drink- the menu has dozens of concoctions most of which looked real good. I ordered a "T&S Old Fashion and my wife had "The Girl Next Door". Both were drink types we usually don't order but we loved them enough to order another round. Speaking of the menu-it's pretty entertaining besides all the drink choices. Also entertaining was watching the bartenders making the drinks with a huge flair of showmanship. Music tracks were great as well. Could have just stayed to listen to the music. The food options looked tasty as well but we were still full from lunch so we just opted to drink. By the time we left, Tales was pretty full. A fun place to come back to and recommend to friends.

I would definitely recommend for a cocktail before/after dinner or if you're looking for some appetizers/small plates. Great spot.
