This was my first Michelin Starred experience and I cannot believe it's taken me this long to treat my mouth to such a wonderful flavor journey. I had no idea that food could do those things to my mouth. Pause. But really though, every ingredient and spice was coupled beautifully with the other and not to mention the perfect pairings of wine with each course. I left this restaurant feeling more than satisfied and almost as if I didn't pay enough for the magic I experienced. We had an incredible meal at Senses! The service was impeccable and the food was delicious and interesting.

Food ranged from good to truly memorable, especially the vegan-leaning items, and the service was as expected in this price range. But the non-alcoholic beverage pairing was truly _atrocious_, ranging from decent cocktails too sweet for the food, to a supposed fruit beer that was essentially an alco-pop with no alco - I'd have been offended to be served it in McDonalds. Judging by the wine pairing I had with the dessert, they do know how to do that - so do yourself a favor, and stick to that or water. read more

We had the six course lunch some of us had wine pairing. Everything was very good. The food and the wine. The interesting thing is that there is a wine cellar that is in the floor. The restaurant had a very nice feeling and decorations. The service was excellent. Felt like royalty dining in this really neat place. We so happened to stumble across this place last minute and was sure happy that we did. Service was excellent. Nothing went wrong and everything was perfect. The portions were small but good and you were definitely full once you left. This place was a real treat. To echo others, each dish - from the presentation to the flavors - was so unique and whimsical. Senses is not your average stuffy "French-inspired" Michelin place; the chef really does enjoy playing with your senses (with some things being more out there than most)! Everything was a delight, although there were some occasional misses in flavors. I didn't enjoy some of our amuse bouches, finding them a little strange - especially the little sandwich-cracker thing - but I don't mind that, because the actual courses were delicious. My absolute favorite: a little chocolate coated ice cream pop embedded in the chocolate dessert plate. Such great fun, as Mary Berry would say! Service was friendly and thoughtful; they offered to take our bags for us and store them behind the hotel concierge desk as our reservation was right before we were about to leave Amsterdam, so we arrived with suitcases and all. This place deserves more than 5 stars! Let me start w/ this. If you're looking for a full culinary experience, Senses is the place to come eat. The chef is creative w/ presentation, but also works magic w/ combining flavors. They offer 3-6 course meals that you can enjoy w/ a wine pairing to fully enjoy the flavors of the meal. We opted to go w/ their 5 course meal and wine pairing. The service here is amazing. Each course is brought to your table and explained as to what it is. Your taste buds are in the hands of the chef. So be sure you're open to trying anything and everything. You won't be disappointed. From what I'm told the menu changes so what you read in one review may not be the same as someone else. If you're not sure what the courses will have, call ahead and ask. At the end of our meal we were given a recipe book. SO COOL! We didn't expect to be as blown away as we were. Senses works with food to create art pieces! We were in for the special treat. A group of three of us ordered the 4 courses. Before the first dish arrived, we were treated with Mini appetizers. They were so fun to look at. The hot dog was smaller than the thumb. The cucumber ball was like a chocolate truffle size. The cavier was simply divine. Each dish subsequently showed the skill and uniqueness of the chef. There were so many rounds of interludes. Through the portion might look small, we were so full by the end of this 4 hours meal. Really liked our experience here; we actually almost went back a second time in three days because it was so good. We had the two course surprise menu, a bottle of wine, dessert wine (which was some sort of cider-port type blend I'd never seen before). The meal was delightfully filling, exceptionally affordable, and very artistic. The presentation was really quite fantastic. The atmosphere was understated and elegant: warm copper and bronze tones in the walls are picked up in everything from the lampshade linings to the fresh arrangements of autumn flowers. Cream and silver accents are punctuated by flashes of pink flowers in the table vases. Inoffensive world music played quietly in the background. The service is excellent and attentive without being overbearing. Seating and menu were prompt, and a slight wobble in the table was noticed immediately and fixed by the staff. The waitress had an easy charm. I had the seven course chef's tasting menu: To start, there was hot-out-of-the oven multigrain bread and butter, served on a beautiful olive wood board. 1) A trio of a Smoked Salmon Spiral, Salmon Rillette, topped with arugula, and Cucumber Bas frois with creme fraiche and a swipe of saffron mayo. The overall effect was smooth, verdant, and light - nice way to whet the palate. 2) Baked duck breast with compote and white bread brioche with a balsamic vinaigrette drizzle. The peppery arugula nicely complemented the earthiness of the duck. 3) Corn soup with cashews, small shrimp, and herb oil - a nice nutty follow-up to the richness of the duck. The sweetness of the corn and cashews reinforced one another, unified by the creamy soup base, accented by the texture of the shrimp, which contrasted with the crunchy cashews. 4) Plaice fillet on a bed of fennel with a peeled cherry tomato on top, accompanied by mashed potatoes with mixed sweet tomato, tart fennel, and salted fish - a soft and subtle interplay of flavors complemented by the soft textures of the mashed potatoes and cooked fennel and greens. 5) Diamond steak with wild spinach, a fried sauerkraut ball, and a potato layer cake with a variety of sauces (an earthy, almost mushroom-flavored au jus, herbal oil, and mustard with a slight hint of honey) - The mineral flavor of the spinach brings out the richness of the steak while the texture of the fried sauerkraut's outside contrasts nicely with the melted inside and tenderness of the beef diamond steak. Meanwhile, the simple potato cake is a refreshingly simple break from the complexity of the other flavors. 6) Cheese plate with grape pear sauce and nut butter: camembert; goat cheese rolled in ashes; and cow's milk cheese with red bacteria (like the kind that produces blue cheese, but red). The pear sauce picks up the fruit in the bread, while balanced out by the nut butter. 7) Cinnamon milkshake and amaretto cheesecake with raspberry and chocolate drizzle - a sweet ending to the evening that wasn't too heavy, whose combination of flavors had an almost lightly smokey aftertaste. Good things take time, hence you should bring plenty with you (4 courses took 3 hours). Glad I did NOT read the review from 2011 before we went there for a late lunch - we (my son and I) really liked the decor, and Roos (Rose) our waitress was lovely - The restaurant is attached to a four-star hotel, one with a real lobby (unlike the two-stars I usually stay in) and uber-modern restrooms - I had a 'caprese' broodjie (?) sandwich to us 'Mercans - tasty pesto, some whole pine nuts, basil, mozzarella that tasted fresh, on two slabs of good whole grain bread. I did not need dinner later, just a snack. Will (my grown son) had a large burger on a good size roll which he declared perfectly cooked, medium well. His side of fries were fresh hot delicious and came with a smoke flavor mayo made in house by the chef, with his own (secret)formula. - GRILL TASTE for real. Maybe doesn't sound as good, but if you like the taste of a grilled steak or burger, this taste was great. And it did not linger too long on the palate - They serve dinner here too, but it's a lot pricier than lunch, which was a great buy. The lunch for the two of us, with one drink for me, and three for Will (cappucino, iced tea and a coke) came to under 30 Euro - Will left Roos a little extra, he thought she was very attractive (his remark to me after leaving started with "If I were single..." I ate a 3 course surprise menu by myself on a whim. It was surprisingly not expensive (35 euro) for this level of taste and presentation. I didn't leave hungry (unlike some modern fufu restaurants which give you 3 peas and a carrot sculpture. The food was genuinely surprising and utterly delicious. Easily, and by the far the best meal I had in Amsterdam over 2 weeks. And possibly one of the best in Europe overall in 2 months. This is one of my most amazing palatable experiences with edible masterpieces that will make your mouth beg for more. My husband and I got a 5-course meal groupon prior to visiting Amsterdam and made reservations by email as the groupon required. The food was fantastic. It's not for the non adventurous who don't like variety in their food but simply order the same thing over and over. The service was great. The gap between serving was a little too long for my taste. The whole dinner took almost 3 hours. I would come back to this restaurant with or without a groupon. Your senses will be gratified. read more

In all honesty, I'm glad this was only a 3 star joint as I visited on my ill fated (Ill being the operative word) weekend in Amsterdam. We didn't seek it out specifically, we just kinda stumbled across this well-presented restaurant as it was opposite the flower markets in tourist central. The venue itself is very well kept, clean and has an air of decorum (leading on from the design of the posh hotel it's attached to). It was relatively empty on a Saturday lunchtime with our group of five and two couples enjoying a glass of wine and a light bite to eat. The service was fantastic. We were seated and given the menu within a couple of minutes of entering. Our waitress was polite and friendly, checking the appropriate amount of times whether we wanted anything and if everything was alright with the food/drinks. From ordering, we only had about a 15 minute wait for food. Most of us were just having paninis/sandwiches, but one of our number had ordered a hamburger which would took slightly longer to prepare. When my panini arrived, it looked perfectly fine. Plenty of melted mozzarella, warm... Y'know, standard. However, when I looked on the underside the paper towel it had been served on top of on the plate had gotten stuck to the bread! Cue me desperately trying to pick bits of black napkin off my lunch. Not good. Once I had gotten -most- of the paper off, it tasted ok. Not as fresh and tasty as I had as hoped (the tomato didn't taste as sharp and the basil not as fresh as I would have liked), but again - fine. I was only drinking cola and water so in total my bill came to around 10 euro. Not too bad, but I felt I could have gotten a better "non paper coated" panini elsewhere. The rest of the group enjoyed their food and the accompanying wine, but it's not somewhere I would hurry back too. read more

Amuse Bouche: 3 plates - Apple compote with coconut and crispy noodles, rice cracker with peanut sauce, peanut and chopped pickles, Bon-Bon (veggie and chicken) All were Delicious. Course 1: Delicately Smoked Pollock topped with herring caviar and herring onto with crispy shell. Pollock was excellent. Smooth, flaky. The Senses was formerly called get together. The food is excellent. If you want to be surprised, then take the surprise menu. We ordered a la carte and it was really something! It's extraordinary food, but not pretentious. They pay attention to every little detail, for instance I had an onion sauce that was really great. We'll be back soon! This restaurant is associated with the Albus hotel. Even on a Saturday night you usually don't have to make a reservation, but you can drop by spontaneously. read more
