I arrived in Amsterdam quite late, it was raining, and I was in desperate need of dinner. The staff were kind enough to seat me even though they were nearing last call, and I'm so glad I decided to dine here. The restaurant operates on a three-course menu, which I didn't realize until I arrived. I tried to eat as much as I could and took my dessert for takeaway. I loved the BEEF CARPACCIO with truffle mayo as my starter. For my main, I had the BLACK GARLIC VEAL SKEWERS, served with spinach, carrots, vegetable chips, and some fries. When I and my husband were in Amsterdam, looking for eating place was my responsibility. Then I found this place. This place is easy to find and inside is nice mood. They have menu both Dutch and English. (Food and drink） Their three course menu (price fixe style) is so good deal! You can choose starter, main, and dessert, and that cost is only €39.95! My choice was Beef Carpaccio, Pan-Fried Plaice Fillet, and Piña Colada Panna Cotta, and my husband's was Crispy Deep Fried Salmon Roll, and Pumpkin & Walnut Strudel with Pistatio & Almond Ice Cream. Everything was wonderful presentation and so delicious! Our server was so friendly and nice. After we finished our meal, she asked us "would you like to try herbis? That's home made". Sure why not!? We chose Humphrey's for dinner one evening as it seemed to offer enough variety to satisfy everyone. They strongly encouraged making reservations, which is hard for us while traveling (given our somewhat fluid schedule). I think another place we were considering would not let us make a reservation within an hour of the current time, but at least Humphrey's was flexible enough to allow that, so we went with them. The restaurant is within a 10-minute walk of the Central Station, just off a main street. It fronts on a small plaza that has multiple other restaurants. Inside, lighting was dimmed. I think originally they had a QR code for menus, but my phone couldn't read theirs. They produced physical menus, which was nice. The next challenge was ordering. It was unclear whether you'd be forced to get their 3-course full meal option (which was more food and more expense than I wanted), or whether you could just get an individual entree. The menu seemed to imply you did not have this choice. Once our server returned we were able to confirm that you could just order an entree, which was a relief. I went with a vegetable curry dish, which was pretty good. I think the others got one chicken and one fish dish, but I'm not certain. They were also satisfied with the food. I think they had a full bar, but I just got a glass of wine. There was a bit of confusion at the end when we were paying. As was common in Amsterdam, the server came to the table with one of those hand-held credit card readers. I held out my card and he said, "I can't take the card." I initially thought he meant that they did not accept Visa (which I found very odd), but apparently it was that they are not allowed to physically touch the credit cards; you have to either insert it or use the tap-to-pay feature. After that, payment was easy. The best summary I can provide is that I think I'd enjoy a 2nd meal here more than I enjoyed the first one, if only because I would not be hung up on minor details again. I think it was mostly just bad luck, but each step seemed like there was some minor obstacle to work around. Knowing what I know now, I think a return visit would be hassle-free. We were walking by as it started to rain and the place looked so inviting and warm evening and were fortunately seated right away as they were busy. We had delicious Merlot wine with a super flavorful flat iron steak and mixed grille skewer. Really flavorful and well prepared. service was also very friendly and helpful. They offered a 3 course meal for a great price. For someone like me who doesn't eat seafood and doesn't really care for beef... the menu was somewhat limited. Excellent food/service again This was our third visit to Humphrey's. We'd reserved ahead of time and it was a good thing since the restaurant was packed on a Saturday night in mid-February. The food and service were excellent; my only complaint was what a previous poster stated: when I tried to defer my dessert order until after eating my main I was told, "It would be easier for me since I've taken all the other orders" by the waitress. Not too sure why that extra 3 minutes after eating the main would have been a problem... Our table of 5 chose a multitude of different apps, mains, and desserts. This place was third on my list because the other two on my list were closed on a Thursday! I didn't expect much as I was told it's good but it's an international restaurant. Came out with a great experience! The restaurant was quaint, and actually pretty big. Waiters and staff were nice but definitely plan for a two hour seating! Got the three course meal- including the carpaccio, sea bass and apple streusel - everything tasted great and on point! My other party had butter chicken (would not recommend) and lobster bisque ( lighter than the normal fair and good) and the tiramisu which was also great! They also give you some sides like amazing fries, cous cous, and a cole slaw which were all great but also too much food for us. The restaurant has a resident cat roaming around and super cute hope that you get to see her if you do visit! Overall I had a pleasant time and overly stuffed! The drinks were also top line! The first time I went here, I was blown away. Now, I've had time to go a few more times, I'm more critical. It's a really safe, and decent choice for a nice meal. This is one of those really rare limited chains. You get a full multi-course meal for a fixed price. You get a lot for your money, and the service has always been good. At first, when going with co-workers, I was like "wow" what a great meal for the price. It was on subsequent visits I could see the compromises they make to deliver so much for such a fair price. When I was here on holiday with my wife, she spent most of the the meal playing with the cat. She spent a lot of time tempting it with her roast duck. The cat certainly ate her fair share. When she talked to one of the long time servers, he said that was unusual because the cat was really jaded when it came to eating with a customer. It made my wife's evening. It's not that perfect dinner in the Jordaan, but it's a great choice when you want things to be safe and tasty. read more

Only negative was the wait time for drinks, but they comped our first round of drinks, which definitely made up for it given how great the Espresso Martinis are. Humphrey's is mere footsteps from the hotel we enjoyed in Amsterdam, the Convent Hotel. Previous guests had mentioned Humphrey's when they reviewed the hotel on TripAdvisor, so we decided to give it a try. While I tend not to seek out chain restaurants for dining, Humphrey's is very nice. They do something pretty clever, which is that they offer a very affordable pris fixe menu with three courses, so you enjoy the whole dining out experience for a relatively low cost. Unfortunately, on the night that we went in, it was very cold and somewhat crowded. Faced with the choice of dining in the middle of a busy room or in a cold corner, we picked the chilly spot. Though the decor is very beautiful, it feels a bit impersonal and modern. For the meal, we chose mushroom soup as the starter. It was very good. The entreés we chose were meat with a red wine sauce for my dining companion. I tried a tiny taste of the sauce and was very impressed. My meal was, of course, the fish special. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Dessert was Creme Bruleé. It was a bit cool and the sugar crust was a bit thin and not quite crunchy enough. I would definitely eat here again and I feel it's a very good value for the money! The food is very well-prepared and of a good quality. The service was very efficient. I'm not sure if it really earns much more than "A-OK" for its rating and I don't know that I could count myself a fan. In a city of amazing dining experiences that are equally delicious, but cozier or more unique, I count this one as simply very good. In summation, "Eet smakelijk!" I took a group of American students here for their welcome dinner and I was pretty impressed. I go to a lot of restaurants with groups and it's not always easy to find places in Amsterdam to accommodate more than 10 people and with a small budget. The portion and quality of the food was good. The students had some issues deciding what to eat since there was so much on the menu but were thrilled that they could get 3 courses. No one complained of still be hungry. The service was fast and the staff was friendly. The decor and atmosphere was also very nice. Not sure I would necessarily take my family or guests from out of town (unless they were very picky eaters) but it was a great place for a group meal. Unlike one reviewer mentioned, we would not consider Niewezijds Kolk part of the Jordaan. This is restaurant is in the Centrum (center). If you are looking for a unique Amsterdam experience I would not recommend it (they are a chain and can be found in many cities in the Netherlands). However, if you are looking for a good meal at a very decent price in the center of town, then I would recommend it. Walkable As for #1 - the kiddo and the husband liked it a lot more than I did. That being said - it was not bad; I just was expecting more after talking to the concierge. Our mistake before coming to Humphrey's was eating that same day. You would seriously need to fast for days before eating there in order to be able to come close to finishing your meal. You definitely get a lot of food for your money, but it seems so wasteful. I got the beef carpaccio as my appetizer, and it was so big that I already felt full after eating only that. Both my hubby and I got the mixed grill. We wished we could have ordered one tasting menu and split it because there was just so much food on the table! We couldn't eat our desserts so we asked if we could take them to go. Our server said it wasn't possible so we just cancelled them. Humphrey's was A-OK in my opinion. We had high expectations, as the decor was cute (i.e. ivy hanging from the alleyway) and it was recommended by the bartender at our hotel. I was impressed with the soup and the filet, however they ran out of the sole and my coworker was quite disappointed. Also, I asked for a recommendation for a dry white wine, and the server was too young and didn't know anything about the different wines offered on the menu. After not being able to finish my meal our server packaged the leftovers, within minutes the manager came to our table and proceeded to yell at us that the food we paid for "you just can't take it! Came here with a friend who'd been to one of these before. It's a chain restaurant where for a fixed price of 25€ you get a 3-course meal (excl. drinks) and you get to pick your starter, main and dessert from a list of choices. I'm not usually a fan of these, since the combination often turn out weird. But the food itself was rather nice, especially the main (pork roast in red wine sauce) and dessert (vanilla ice cream with strawberries). My salad unfortunately was drenched in dressing and my friend's fries and veggie's arrived after we almost finished our main. Service was ok, I get that they were busy and mostly catering to customers sitting outside in the sun, they could've still been more attentive to those sitting inside. it's a formula restaurant. we went to the humphrey's at spuistraat 267. there's also another humphrey's nearby. and dozens of other ones around the country. ours was BAD. the fries and other potato dishes were cold and chewy and my wife ordered salmon, panfried on the skin. she asked the waitress to make sure to order it juicy, not dry through and through. but she got a dry and chewy one anyway. so when one of the senior waitresses asked us if everything was okay, my wife explained the salmon actually wasn't. the rude waitress told my wife it was her own fault! How my wife should have ordered a RAW one! I had to remind that woman we where here guests, to get us what we ordered instead of insulting us. so they got us another plate. also baked dry and chewy. another waitress apologized and got us 2 glasses of red wine for free... all in all: don't visit humphrey's restaurants. read more
