    Best Gin and tonic ever

Had a great dinner here on our last night in Amsterdam. Wanted to enjoy this amazing hotel (The Andaz) which houses the Bluespoon restaurant. One nice feature of this place is the open kitchen and its proximity to the tables. Makes you feel like you are in someones' home with friends cooking for you. The also have a chefs table which is literally in the kitchen right on top of the action. The food was top notch, check out the food porn photos...and service was attentive and friendly. It was a tad pricey, but it was a premium experience in a premium hotel, so did not seem out of line. Also to note, they have an outstanding mixology program coming out of their bar, not to be missed.

This review is about the Sunday brunch at Bluespoon. After hearing about their special Sunday menu, I decided to give it a try. They recommend making a reservation on their website, but we were lucky to get a table without making one. In fact, there were just 2 more groups dining at around 1:30PM. The selection on offer is quite good, especially considering that the a la carte menu is on the more expensive side. There are two kinds of buffets available - a breakfast selection, and a brunch selection, which while being slightly more expensive than the former also comes with more offerings. The spread is laid out nicely and is fresh. We decided to go for the a la carte menu simply because we didn't care much about the meats on offer on the buffet. I went with the French toast while V decided to get pancakes. You get a choice of syrups/butter, and we got maple syrup and cranberry sauce. It was alright - well made, but nothing very special. I would probably prefer IHOP over these anyway ;) Alongside the sweet stuff, we decided to get the only vegetarian sandwich option on the menu - pumpkin, cheese, and cherry tomatoes. It was quite good and was enough for the two of us. You get to choose between a salad or house fries. The fries were awesome! We were lucky to be able to sample the dessert buffet. There was a decent selection of crumble, macaroons, mousse, cookies, etc. All fairly good, but nothing too outstanding or worth coming over for unless you're already staying at the hotel. The service started out being terrible, but ended up being decent. I think it's an upcoming restaurant that I'd keep an eye open for, but right now it doesn't quite cut it for being on my regular list.

Higher-end hotel bar; attractive bartenders, abundant drink menu. Best drink was the €20 Manhattan.

Amazing service! Wow, I felt like I was a friend being welcomed back and it was my first time. So warm, so friendly. Open kitchen so you feel like you are in the living room at a friend's house watching them cook dinner. I had asparagus soup that was amazing. Rich, but light and creamy. So warm and soothing. Scallops for dinner could have been cooked a minute more but were delish. Cappuchino for desert with a fantastic chocolate cherry oat cookie. Yummmmmm! It will be my first stop when I return. Thank you Blue Spoon!

Pricy food, techno music beat throughout meal, menu that tries too hard to be different. Disappointing after reading other reviews.

And despite ALL of our meals in Amsterdam being excellent, this one may have been the best. We wanted to try Dutch food, not totally knowing what to expect and were blown away by the combination of flavors and textures we consumed. We started with the pickled herring which was served with onions and pickles- fresh yet bold! I'm still thinking about those little fishies weeks later. Then we each had the sampler-ish plates (I forget what it was called). Hers was the vegetarian version and mine was with sausage. There were 3 kinds of essentially mashed potatoes with veggies mixed in: 1 with spinach I think, 1 with carrots, and 1 with sauerkraut. Mine came with a delightfully rich gravy and my moms came with some kind of lighter yellow sauce (I think mustard based). We tried these same dishes at other Dutch restaurants during our stay, but nothing beat The Pantry. The service in this quaint and cozy spot was also excellent!

Portions are substantial and a very good value in a neighborhood where tourist-markups are the norm. They have a/c, but in order to feel it you'll need to sit closer to the back of the restaurant/near the kitchen, as there is only one wall unit back there, and they leave the front of the restaurant open to the elements (even in 98+ degree heat).

I found it browsing Yelp, and the name alone told me this was going to be a meat-forward kind of night. Fair warning if you're bringing anyone squeamish about restaurant names: The wife wasn't thrilled about it going in, though the food won her over fast. Getting there was its own small adventure. The place sits down a narrow alley, and our Uber couldn't get us all the way to it, which turned into a bit of a hike. That happened to us more than once in Amsterdam, using the exact address didn't always mean the driver could actually reach the door, so budget a few extra minutes if you're headed here. I normally default to steak, but the menu had a burger topped with pulled pork that promised more meat than a straight cut, and I couldn't pass it up. Delicious. Genuinely one of the best burgers I've had. But the wife's flat iron steak might have stolen the night. Flat iron is one of the most underrated cuts out there, and this kitchen proved it. She was still talking about that steak days after we got home, enough that I ended up buying flat irons from Costco just to chase it. The atmosphere is cool and a little edgy, dim lighting, a lot of character, and yes, some genuinely creepy decor scattered around, including an old doll that stares at you like it's judging your order. It ran loud, but not so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across the table. Service was good, just on European time rather than American time. Getting the check took a while, which threw us off at first, but that's the norm across the EU, not a knock on this place specifically. Pricey, but worth every bit of it. We'd go back without hesitation next time we're in Amsterdam.

It was very warm in the place, so keep that in mind if you're traveling in Amsterdam during a heat dome! We had a couple servers who worked with us nd both were kind and friendly. They didn't quite communicate with each other about our need to split the check a specific way, but it worked out in the end. We enjoyed some cocktails and beer (ranging from 9.50 Euro to 12 Euro), as well as the Pork Belly and Pickles to start off (21.50 Euro for 300 grams). Tasty way to start the meal. The three of us shared our mains and enjoyed what we had. The Favorite Ribs (24.50 Euro) were flavorful; the L'Incroyable 300gr (Ribeye; 34.50 Euro) was good, but our least favorite of what we ordered; the Le Cannibale Royale 170gr (burger) was super tasty. We also enjoyed some frites (4.90 Euro) and some delicious Mac n Cheese (6.50 Euros). Good time and good food!

We dropped off our little frame with our mothers in it. The server originally asked us to place it wherever we see fit, but the owner (she has the manager vibe) came over and helped us picked an even better spot! Service was what I thought was slow, but then we learned that Dutch people are very customer-focused, so we had to initiate an eye contact and signal to them that we are ready to close our check. I also found out that tipping is not required. Who would have thought? Oh, and also water is not free. We sat on the patio. Our server brought us complementary bread with butter while we read through the menu. I'm told my meal was authentic Dutch food, but it just seemed like a strange combination. The name slipped my mind, but it was a Power mashed potatoes with endive, but the meatball on top with brown gravy and then be beside that with some type of smoked sausage with a pile of mustard. I've always felt that whatever food you put on a plate should taste good together sausage with the mustard with the meat and the gravy and the mashed potatoes just seem disjointed to me. With that sad, I ate every drop of it and enjoyed it so maybe I learned something from this meal. ‍ My son took the alternative approach and ordered a meal with Indonesian flavors; chicken with peanut sauce was the main entrée and it came with french fries. He definitely enjoyed his meal as well. I'm glad we gave VS a try. It turned out to be a good meal of Dutch food and a touristy area with food from all over the world. I guess I'm old-fashioned because I just wanted wanted a taste of the local cuisine. Cheers!
