I took my Santa Cruz full suspension to Rob up at Bike Lane in The Woodlands.. and asked him to do a tune-up on my Hydraulic Brakes and my "Mechs" .. My brakes were a bit old and he did what he could to ramp them up.. however we couldn't get them to the right sweet spot. He finally put on some Shimanos.. tuned up my shifters and even aired up my shocks and when I got the bike back I was shocked at how wonderful it felt. He did everything perfectly as I would have expected it. Had a delightful hour with Herb, the owner of the store. He showed us the ins and outs of the "Aventon Sinch". We bought this model and were happy to know Bike Lane provides lifetime service! We took my wife's old bike in to be serviced after sitting derelict in her mother's garage for more than a decade. New brakes, a tune up, and $100 later and the bike was ready for a trip. The front tire was soft so they filled it with air again (Red flag #1). You can imagine what happened next. ...not 15 minutes into the return trip home I heard the distinct death rattle of a bike tire as it wheezed its last breath. Well, that prevented taking the bike on a trip that weekend. The following week, the team repaired it again and all seems well. Another week goes by and now the handle bar is loose. Rather than try to tighten anything myself, I thought it best to return it to the experts. Surely in a pricy once over, the team would have looked at the state of the handlebar and seen if everything was kosher, and tightened any loose bits. Especially after working on flipping the brake grips and working on the brakes in general. (Red Flag #2) On this 3rd trip to Ken's haven, I was initially told that the threading on the center of the handlebar was too worn away. Also that I would be hard pressed to find a replacement. Tough luck guy, better luck next time I guess. As I dejectedly loaded the bike in the boot, Ken came out and looked it over, pulled out a pocket tool and tightened the handle bar. He said the bolts were stripped and metric but he did his best. An offer for me to purchase screws in the shop to have put on the bike would have been appreciated but I was grateful he took the time to give his expert opinion outside of the shop. Next time, I may go elsewhere for repairs on a regular bike. However, when it comes to performance and new equipment, I can tell this would be the place to go. read more

I have to say, I wanted to love this shop. It's gorgeous, they have a wonderful selection of a number of brands and a pretty friendly staff. I took my bile in for a tune up, paid $86, and they didn't even degrease the chain or cassette. Not like my gear is caked up with grease, but when I can still see sand and tiny clumps of grease on the chain, I know it wasn't touched. And, my tires were as low as when I took them in. Did they even touch the wheels? Maybe they did, but having low pressure gives you pause. I'm pretty sure I'll be looking for a new shop. read more

2 things you need to know about this place. 1.) lowest price. I buy all my bikes from here and I got my 8 year old a cannondall. Ken said it'll be $570, but I saw on the website it was selling for $550. I do not give a diddle bit about $20, compared to $600. I just thought that might be the local mark up and I am cool with that because I want the small business around me to keep on running. And I want to keep buying my bikes from here for another 30 years. When I handed over my card, Ken looked at the computer and said "oh hey it's actually on sale for $550" I promise. All I got was indifference and apathy on my visit today. No one helped me the entire time I was there. 4 employees and 1 other customer were the only people in the shop. They happen to have a jersey I'd been looking for and decided to make a purchase. The young lady behind the counter was too involved in her conversation to even notice I was there, the person she was speaking with gestured several times to take care of me, a paying customer, she looked over and didn't help until she finished her conversation. During this time 3 people in the shop saw this and did not intervene. Disappointed, as I've heard some great things about this shop and was looking at upgrading my Giant Contend to one of the higher end BMCs. I'll take my $7,000 budget somewhere else as I guess they don't need new or repeat customers. I got the message loud and clear. read more

I'm a heavy guy, but never been sensitive about my weight... or so I thought... I mean, I know i'm overweight and I'm logical about how I got this way... I over ate and sat around, kept putting it off more and more no excuses, Here I am, quote obese for my height and frame... SO, I went into Bike Lane to get a bike, obvious right? They where pretty busy but not terribly so, I waited patiently for someone to acknowledge me as they where helping others and looked around... finally someone came up and asked how i was doing, was I in looking for a bike for wife, kids, how could they help... I responded with, nope, its for me... and was a bit confused and probably looked that way based on the greeting... His response was, Oh, my bad, you don't look like our typical customer... It's clear what was meant and intended and it's simply not ok... I'm not a thin skinned person, and I could care less that bike sales are booming right now, you don't treat people this way... I'm clearly there to make an attempt at getting healthy, not to be talked down too by some Elitist in a vailed attempt to shame me... I responded back with something about getting my money now and left... I wish I could say i was super witty and clapped back with something... but I was taken a back a bit... I don't write reviews or recommendations hardly ever... everyone has bad days and sometimes service is just poor... People say Go See Ken, and i'm pretty sure it wasn't him I spoke with, but if your employees are a representation of your company then Bike Lane has missed the mark... I ended up ordering a bike online from a manufacturer to be shipped into another shop in town for setup and etc... This isn't an advert for anyone else though, so no names mentioned... We would occasionally see a sticker on a back of a vehicle that said, "Go ask Ken" never looked it up... would see it again like maybe 5 to 6 months later, still no research... then we saw it again... and this time I looked it up... so "Go see Ken" this time I looked it up... and we find its a bike store here in the Houston area, actually the Woodlands area... and as we just bought two electric bikes over the summer, we went ahead and decided to go check it out. so as we made the way to the woodlands, we looked at other reviews... everyone said great things about this place, so of course we were excited to make the drive. When we arrived, we were greeted promptly by the owner, I believe. Nice guy, friendly. They were busy, its covid, and of course a lot of people are now out on their bikes, both regular and electric, this was the first place that we found a real and true selection of bikes. everywhere else is completely dry of bikes, but Kens had a good choice. We did think most of their accessories were extremely over priced and could be bought online much cheaper, but kens offers customer service... and good customer service is worth paying for... and its clear those loyal to kens will pay for it. I wish there were other locations though, the only one in town appears to be the one in the Woodlands. read more

Unlike the other local shop i was not treated like a freak for being a rather large man trying to get help with my bikes.

I will never buy another thing from this shop and I will never step into this place again. In good faith and fairness, I can not recommend this shop to anyone because my experience was so poor here. I was looking for a new tri bike and I went in to Bike Lane because they sold the brand of bike I was interested in. I had been in here before, and while I had not yet purchased a bike here, I had purchased other products, to include shoes, peddles, helmets, tires, tubes, clothing, etc. I went in after work and brought along my shoes so I could get on the bike I was interested in and give it a whirl in the parking lot. I got the attention of one of the owners, Ken. He directed me toward the inventory and asked me a few questions about my experience, riding style, height, etc. When I settled on a bike, I said great, let's take it outside for a spin. He said, "No, you won't be able to ride it before you buy it." To which I looked at him incredulously. "Really, I am going to spend $2500 on a bike and you're not going to let me take it for a test ride in the parking lot?" He responded with a flat "No, you're just going to have to trust me." I asked to speak with Herb, the other owner, and Herb backed him up. Said it was his partner and that he respected his decision. I thanked him for his time and told him that I could not in good faith, ever shop at Bike Lane again. He said he understood and that was it. This encounter really bothered me for a long time and it's taken a while for me to write this review. I've spoken with other people who shop here and they all say they were allowed to take their new bikes for a spin in the parking lot before their purchases. Some even mentioned that Ken let them take the bike home for a night to try it out. I have not verified these stories, it's just going on what others have said. I have tried to understand where Ken and Herb were coming from. Were they concerned that I was going to walk off with the bike? Was Ken having a bad night and Herb felt compelled to back up with partner? Was I discriminated against? Did I say something to set them off? I was polite and did not raise my voice or even confront either one aggressively or rudely. I can only imagine that it had something to do with the way I looked, how I was dressed. I suppose I will never know. But I will never go back in to this shop. I've bought plenty of bikes, cars, clothes, jewelry, etc from establishments and was never treated in such a way as to leave questioning myself the way I did when I left Bike Lane. Whenever I am out and about and see a bumper sticker that says "Go See Ken" I wonder if these people would still go back to Bike Lane and display those stickers knowing that Ken and Herb treat customers the way the treated me that night. So this is the nearest bike shop to me and I love the convenience. I also love that the store is quite well stocked and that they have a variety of things. I also love that they ARE indeed knowledgeable about bikes, accessories and what may help your ride. This is the place where the infamous "Go See Ken" bumper stickers come from, and Ken does know his stuff. That all being said, it seems Ken is the only one that really knows. The rest of the staff (and I've been here on 4 occasions, two were bike shopping), seem to not really care about...well anything. Even Ken seemed somewhat annoyed that we were asking questions etc, when referred to him by a staffer that didn't seem to care about service. My prior experience when shopping for bikes was similar. Came in to test ride a few models and it was as if I was really putting them out to ask questions etc. Thankfully Cannondale didn't "fit" me like Giant or Specialized as I bought my bike elsewhere...and while I was holding between two different bike brands that fit at two different shops, I went with the one that provided me better service in the end. This visit I came in to buy a certain saddle, as they were the local dealer for this particular type... and no one else had this particular model. Luckily it fit well and is super comfortable...and even Ken "told" me it was the right fit for me and what I needed, It just seemed his approach was condescending. Maybe it was a bad day for them, but again, 4 different experiences with the same attitudes. Bottom line, if you can stand the poor attitude and service to tap into Ken's knowledge, come here...for me that will be the last visit to this shop. read more

The "Go See Ken" stickers are legit. I stopped in here prior to Ironman Texas and it was a great experience. Ken went out of his way to stop what he was doing and give my bike a look over without charging me a dime. Ken knew his stuff and was super knowledge not only about my bike, but about his product line as well. This shop is stocked full of great bikes and some incredibly sweet QR tri bikes. I think Ken may be a little bit peculiar for some people, but he's an awesome guy who knows his stuff. Short review: BEST bike shop in The Woodlands and greater Houston area. Whether you are a recreational rider or a hardcore cycling enthusiast - Bike Lane is the only bike shop I would send my friends to. After checking out all the bike shops in The Woodlands area, as well as a few in Houston, I decided to buy a new road bike at Bike Lane. I bought an entry level road bike, Scott Speedster 50. There were a couple of reasons why I chose Bike Lane and my experience after buying the bike has confirmed that I definitely made the right decision in going to Bike Lane. Rather than give some generalizations about what a great bike shop it is - I'll list a few specific examples that are more compelling. 1. They carry quality bike brands at very good prices. They carry several lines of quality road bikes, tri bikes and mountain bikes. (Cervelo, Cannondale, Quintana Roo, Orbea, Scott, Felt, Haro, and others) Most Importantly...and this is what sets Bike Lane apart from all the others... 2. OUTSTANDING Customer Service a. When buying a new bike - the right fit is most important. Ken, the manager, did a great job fitting me. He made several adjustments while I was on the bike, including changing out the stem. About a year ago I bought a comfort hybrid from a different bike shop on Research Forest and they did nothing to fit it for me. As a result of not being properly fitted on that bike I began to develop nerve damage in my wrists (cyclist Palsy). Ken Thurlow at Bike Lane has been building bikes for over 20 years. You want to buy a bike from a guy like Ken that has the both the experience and expertise to fit you properly. b. During my first week on my new bike I had a blowout on my rear tire, not the tube, the tire blew out. I'm a pretty big guy, 255 lbs, so that's a lot of weight on the bike tire. I took it back to Ken at Bike Lane expecting to buy a new replacement tire. He put on a Continental Gatorskin Hardshell tire - which is a definite upgrade from tire that I had, and he didn't charge me anything! c. While out on a ride this week I had a spoke on my rear wheel vibrate loose. I dropped it off to Ken so he could fix the spoke. I went by to pick it up today and Ken told me that he didn't like the way those wheels were performing and he replaced them with Shimano wheels which are an upgrade from what I had. Again, there was no charge. d. Bike Lane provides free tune ups on bikes purchased there for as long as you have the bike. This is important to me. But, it's also important to know that the guys working on your bike know what they are doing. I've had a great experience each time I brought in my road bike, hybrid, or my mountain bike. These guys know what they are doing. read more

As far as bike shops go, I can't imagine a better one than Bike Lane. The staff knows their business and they are super friendly. I have never made it three steps in the door without being greeted and offered assistance. They have a great selection of bikes for all your biking needs (from novice to pro lever sports) and they have an in house bike shop to help fix your jacked up bike (if needed). They offer tech, gear for riding and the selection is pretty good. I can't imagine going anywhere else in Houston for my Biking related needs. They are a community supporter and I will be using them for all my upcoming Ironman training needs too. read more

Purchased a Caad10 and they did not adjust the limit screws on the rear derailleur. this made the chain drop off both sides of the cassette and I have a big gash on one side of the frame, and chips in the paint on the stay. This also locked up the back wheel on the second failure, causing a flat spot on the rear tire (also dangerous). Poor service all around, obviously the initial service, and now the owner trying to CYA on it. He blamed the chain for it and said the limit screws are off and he had to adjust them, yet only because the chain dropping causing them to move. This guy is crazy if he expects me to believe that; it is impossible for these screws to move mechanically from what happen. I have lifetime service on this bike at this shop, and I can guarantee I will never go there to use it. If I need service I will pay another shop to do the work. read more

Ok, I will give Ken a great review. Yet, I think he should really love the ones that show faithfulness

For cycling in The Woodlands, this place is it. They carry a lot of different brands (Canondale, Scott, Orbea, Quintana Roo, Cervelo) so they will be able to hook you up with whatever you are looking for. The only other big store in TW stocks about 90% with a single brand (Specialized) of bike. The owners Herb and Jane are pretty much always there and will talk to you as long as you want. The manager Ken and his staff are friendly and knowledgable. As soon as you walk int he door you will have someone asking you if you need help. I stood around for 10 mins in the other store in TW and left because no one offered to help. They were not dealing with customers, I was the only one ins the store, they were too busy chatting with each other. I just bought a bike at Bike Lane and found out I get free service for life!! Great perk for buying at a bricks and mortar store rather than the internet. Havent had any repairs done there yet but I get the imporession they know what they are doing. Great store, nice people, wont go anywhere else. read more
