So I'm going to start this review with some positives because I feel like those are important, and I don't leave reviews often. They have a great selection of supplies, and I've heard wonderful things about them while out riding previously. They have great communication, at least while they had my bike, and I really enjoyed most of my experience with them. They easily have some of the best bikes in the area. Overall they're a great shop, I've always heard great things, and I'd still recommend them for most things overall. However, I brought my bike in a few months ago then once I got the call it was finished I found out I had Covid. After a month long battle with it, I had other extreme health issues come up. Today, after getting a scan earlier, I was able to come in and get my bike. I've had communication with the shop for the last few months, calling every so often to apologize for it being there so long and to say I am still coming for it. They claim I never once called them. Once I got my bike I saw cosmetic damage on it that was not there when I left it. Gouges in the handle bars and deep scratches on the shifters. Some other scratches here and there. While my bike isn't the fanciest thing in the world, it means a lot to me and was my main mode of transportation in college. The bike has had one incident with a car, where it tapped me going about 5 mph on the very edge of my back wheel and I spun out. But all damage from that was repaired four years ago when it happened by a lovely shop in Kansas. I felt belittled, and like my bike didn't even matter to them. I've been to so many shops over the years, and have never been made to feel like this. I have never gotten my bike back with gouges like this either. Once I brought up the damage on the bike they told me "oh by the way there is a $10 a day storage fee, which we haven't even brought up yet". As though to shut me up. I pulled up photos a video showing that my bike did not have this damage before I brought it in, and they just said "alright let's go home". Three stars because they at least fixed the bike, and most the people there were nice. I can sand down most of the damage, and can get things to fix the paint. But it's the principle of the thing. I wouldn't even want reimbursement for the damage, just advice on how to fix it and an "I'm sorry that happened". I won't be returning, and after this review I don't think they'd want me back. I don't say any of this to be rude or mean, but the entire experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for the shop. I'm not going to say don't go to them, they're a great shop. Just well document your bike before leaving it and be prepared. read more

You should always buy a bicycle from a bike shop with people who actually know how to put a bike together.

Took my road bike in for really minor repair (replace chain) and while inspecting the bike found that there was a recall on my Shimano Crank set. They went the extra mile for my benefit and Shimano replaced the entire crank set at no charge to me! Really glad I took my bike in and had the pros at Bike Surgeon take a look. Very pleased with the service!!!! read more

I needed a more comfortable bicycle seat...one made for a woman.... and they took the time to help me find one that works. They actually have an apparatus that analyzes your sitting pattern and recommends a proper seat! It works and I can now ride for several hours without pain. read more

Wow! What a cool shop. I ventured out from STL City not knowing what to expect. Huge facility with beer on tap and lots of staff ready to help. Really great customer service. The guy who helped me was patient, talked me through everything I needed to know, and even pre-assembled the smart trainer for me. read more

I completely agree with Matthew and Mike. No eye contact or social engagement. It's a toss up between mind boggling arrogance or simple social awkwardness but you've gotta think if they want people to come back at least put someone with more personality than a cucumber at the front. My bike had grease or glue leaking from the tape on the handlebars when I got it home. Doesn't seem to be much pride in workmanship, either. I'm looking for a place that's at least warm and welcoming and with perhaps a bit more attention to detail. read more

Bike Surgeon is as good as a bike shop gets. I've been traveling to different bike shops in St. Louis for years (Big Shark, Mesa and Maplewood.) However, once I met the guys at Bike Surgeon I realized there is no reason to cross the river. Chris, John, Tom, Coach, Big Mike, David, Beaner and the gang are outstanding. They are over-the-top knowledgeable and will spend all the time you need to get what you need. They carry Specialized, Felt, Gary Fischer and Quintana Roo bikes -- triathlon, road, mountain, fitness, cruiser and kids bikes. They have great sock of all your "must have" cycling stuff. But, I'm most impressed with how fairly the treat me and offer just amazing customer service. If something isn't right on your bike those guys will make sure things are worked-out. They just treat everyone like a friend -- that they've known forever! For example, I had a FSA crank that gave me fits and after a couple attempts to tighten it, they gave me a new crank and sent the old one back to FSA as a defect. A friend of mine had shifters that were causing him trouble and they made things right! Their recently expanded store allows them to offer outdoor gear, like tents, hiking gear, "Life is Good" stuff, etc. You will really like the atmosphere of the place, with a super-cool "sculpture" bike rack that all the inventory hangs on, hand built stone counters, flooring from a century-old barn and a old VW Microbus that serves as a dressing room! Also, as all good bike shops do ... it is a great place to come-in and hang-out and kill some time. read more

These guys are awesome to work with! Can't say how many times I've stopped by with a small issue with one of my bikes or a question about how to adjust or service something and they've taken time to help me on-the-spot, usually at no charge unless I need parts. Most recently, I bought a new wheel-set only to receive a discount coupon the next day at a race; imagine the punch in the gut I felt... Bought a great bike rack - easy to use and holds three bikes. The sales person was very knowledgable. I needed a helmut and he spent the time to explain the different features of each helmut. He fitted me with a helmut. He suggested some other items but no high pressure sale pitch. The place was busy but he was not rushed. He made sure that I could use the bike rack and watched me hook it up to my car. I was very pleased with the level of service. The place was clean and organized. I would give it more stores if possible. John was so accommodating and helpful. We walked in the store not very optimistic after being the fourth store with no luck. I didn't have much to spend, but had to get my 12-year-old a bike, as his sister got his stolen last week. I was originally going to get one off of market place, as money is extremely tight but I wanted to make sure I got him a good bike at the same time. He managed to find him a used but very very good bike and gave us and unpassable price for it. After paying for it, he made sure that there was a seat to accommodate him, as well as new grips, a tuneup, and just had his best interest at heart, rather than just selling a bike. Kept visiting the store and next thing you know..I had to have a Sirrus Elite Disc Hybrid all blacked out!! The best part was never getting hassled for repeatedly "just looking" and asking a million questions. Once I was fiiiiinally ready to buy, Sam was super helpful with suggestions and the fitting process. He made great suggestions that I'm glad he did. Overall process was great, love the Specialized bikes on hand, great products, very friendly post sales deals..almost made me wish I'd bought my road bike from them except that Urban Shark made me a great deal on a 2012 and I get free tuneups for life with them. Just picked up my new bike tonight! This place is first class all the way. Not only did they help me pick the right bike for my desires with no pressure, but they brought me and taught me how to assemble the bike right out of the box. Folks, I've moved a lot in my life and been a customer at many bike shops, but I've never been given the opportunity to learn about my bike the way the Bike Surgeon guys have allowed. These guys take the time to help...something you don't see much in today's market. Entering a bike shop can be intimidating, especially to those just getting into or wanting to learn about cycling. Yea! These wonderful people fixed my very dopey Huffy bike and started me on a wonderful journey. I appreciated them not laughing at my bike or me for wanting to ride it. This used to be my #1 store. Until today. Not one single person acknowledged I was there....and believe me, no one else was there at 3:30 in the afternoon on a Friday.
