My first visit was favorable. I was here to check out BWorks rather than purchase; I'd looked online at their available bikes. They have dozens of road, mountain, hybrids, and cruisers for sale. BWorks sells used items. Donated bikes are repaired and resold, or chopped up for parts to tune other bikes. Funds go to help inner city youth gain job skills. However, I am looking to replace a bike inexpensively since the frame of my road bike broke after 25 summers of often jarring country roads. BWorks staff were helpful in guiding me not only to available bicycles in my size, but others that would be ready for sell in two weeks or less. Prices are very reasonable, but don't expect new like condition. In addition to two-wheelers BWorks has all kinds of parts, clothing, and cycling paraphernalia for sale. read more

Unethical business practice from this vendor! I ordered a bike frame on their Ebay store and waited for the frame to arrive. Several days later I received a delivery notification from UPS stating that the frame was delivered so I immediately check my outdoor security video footage and see no evidence of anyone delivering to my house. I arrive home from work later that same day and look for the bike frame and could not locate it. I contacted them and told them of this and they stated I should wait a couple of days and maybe the frame will show up. I waited two subsequent days and the frame still not delivered to me. I tell the vendor that UPS may have delivered to the wrong house or may have not delivered at all, so the vendor finally sends me a photo of the box containg the frame and in the photo I can see that the box is sitting outside a home that is clearly not my house! I provide this vendor photos of my house that shows the entry doors and brick of my house that is clearly different than the house shown in the delivery photo. At this point I am assuming that UPS simply delivered to the wrong house and when I tell the vendor this, they told me I needed to file a claim with UPS or Ebay. I told him that they were UPS' customer and not me and that I likely wouldn't get too far with UPS helping me out. I proceeded to file a claim with Ebay and PayPal as I paid for the frame with my Pay Pal account. Ebay opens a "case" but within hours of opening it, they proceeded to close my case because the "vendor provided delivery confirmation". The problem with this is that the frame WAS DELIVERED TO THE WRONG HOUSE! Ebay simply used this delivery confirmation to side with the seller and then proceeded to tell me I had no recourse. I then proceeded to try to file a claim with UPS but was unable to do that because this vendor put a block on me filing a claim with UPS (see photo). Whay would they put a block on me filing a claim with UPS if UPS may have simply delivered to the wrong house? Anyways, I was defintely angry and suspicious of their actions because why wouldn't they want to help me with my claim? Fast forward to garbage pickup day in my neighborhood. I walk outside in the morning to get into my car and across the street I see a large box that looks very familiar to the box in the delivery confirmation photo so I go to look and I find the frame still inside the box. Apparently one of my neighbors had the frame delivered to their house and decided to leave the frame with their garbage. HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS: I look at the shipping label affixed to the box and it did have my correct name but the label had the wrong address! The address was off by one digit. This explains whay this shady vendor put a block preventing me from filing a claim with UPS. They must have discovered that they made a mistake in preparing the shipping documents/label by using the incorrect delivery address. Rather than taking responsibility for their mistake, they decided to act unethically and attempted to hide their mistake. Attached are photos that corroborate this. BUYER BEWARE of this vendor and Ebay as they simply used the seller's delivery confirmation as evidence that I had received the frame eventhough that was not true! It was luck and being in the right place at the right time that I was able to recover the frame and not lose over $100 on this transaction. read more

As the weather gets nicer and COVID restrictions continue to ease, I've been more and more antsy to get out and start living life again here in St. Louis. Luckily for me, I live a few blocks from Saint Louis Bicycleworks in Soulard. If you're not familiar, St. Louis BWorks is more than just a bike shop. The store inspires youth to pursue their dreams, care for the world around them, and explore new possibilities through experiential learning through their charter program which gives kids the chance to earn a free bike while they learn about bicycle safety and maintenance from volunteers. They learn to work independently and as a group to solve problems. About 350 kids graduate from the program every year, earning their own bike, helmet, light and lock. Their dedication to the community is seriously outstanding. So when I decided to purchase a bike, I knew it had to be from BWorks! The store is pretty big! The bikes they sell are all refurbished bikes that have been donated to the organization. So selection can vary depending on demand, availability and season. When I went to pick out a bike, I didn't really know what I was looking for, but they had a great selection of road bikes, mountain bikes and cruisers. One of the employees devoted a lot of attention to making sure I selected the perfect bike for what I was looking for. I got to test ride two different bikes through the streets of Soulard before buying one. My boyfriend also took advantage of their professional bike repair shop. He recently got his college bike from his parents house, but because it had not been used in quite some time, it needed a lot of work. The prices were reasonable to do all the needed maintenance and the work was done pretty quickly. I'm so happy with my bike from BWorks and proudly ride it on all my downtown adventures knowing it helped support a great cause. read more

I used to love this organization. When we still lived in STL I would donate all of my extra bike stuff to them and usually find something cool at the shop for a fair price. I noticed that they now seem to sort out anything valuable to sell on eBay for an insane up-charge. Gives me sleazy pawn shop feels now. Really is too bad. So I made my way back to B-Works this past Monday to get a look at the bike selection and hopefully find a bike. The lady I spoke to was very helpful and she took the time to point out the bikes that were available, and allowed me to test ride one of the new bikes for sale as well. Maybe it's just me, but as a beginner in this world of bicycles, it seems that people are very protective of their cycling shops! Everyone I know that uses B-Works is completely in love with this place, and take offense to me being critical of the shop. Yes, it has a great cause behind it, yes it has great prices on used bikes and accessories, and yes there are many benefits to being a member of the B-Works family, I get that. I also get that this shop is more about its charitable cause than it is for guys like me to go and find a bike. All that in mind, I don't get all the hype about this place. First off, finding a bike here isn't as easy as the people that sent me here made it out to be. Word of mouth about B-Works is exaggerated. There were maybe 20 bikes available on the used section of the shop, and most were smaller frames, 15 inches or so. Not one bike came close to the frame size I would need. I'm sure at certain times of the year when people are buying new bikes and what not, that the selection here does get better. However, if you are looking for a bike RIGHT NOW, chances are you might be disappointed. Frankly, this is the place to go when you need parts, or if you are "keeping an eye out" for a bike. My sister in law is that person. She's not worried about finding a bike right now, so she stops in at B-Works to see what has come in, and until they get a bike that fits her needs, she's content with her morning runs. I'm not that person! Overall, B-Works is a shop for members to do their own work on the bike. It has that enthusiasts garage feel to it aside from the display cases. Used and new bikes share a section of the shop, while parts and accessories are found crammed into nicely organized boxes in another area of the shop. Used helmets and bike racks line the areas in-between, and I'm sure if you don't mind digging around you can find some great stuff here. To the folks that run B-Works, I'm not trying to knock your shop. I'm sure regular members and biking enthusiasts will find a lot to enjoy here. However, approaching this shop from the eyes of a first time rider/buyer, I was let down not so much by the shop, but by the hype around it. I needed more than this place can offer, and it's not your fault. I just need people like me to know what to expect walking in the door, because your members and people that do use this shop regularly are not doing a good enough job of explaining the purpose of B-Works. When they are asked where to go to buy a bike, B-Works spurts out like its the most amazing place with a huge selection, and that just is not the case. read more

This place is wonderful! I got a great Schwinn bike and even got to test it out around the nhood. It's run by really friendly volunteers who really know their stuff... I got a bike for $120 and a helmet for $20. I wanted a bike lock but they ran out of the cable ones. The timings for the shop are very odd but it's totally worth it, and knowing the money is going to bikes for kids made me happy :) If you need a bike, check this place out first before going somewhere else, it's nonprofit and the people are oh-so-helpful. read more

Bicycle Works sold me a pair of Campagnolo wheels (intended as a spare road set) which I found out at a later date had a cracked rear rim. A tech supposedly serviced them before my pick up when I bought the wheels. First of all, shame on me for not seeing the crack when looking them over. But I'm still highly disappointed that a bike refurbishing business would allow this to happen. When I stopped in recently to check around for something else I needed, I let them know what happened a while back with the cracked rim, and that I wasn't very pleased. The guy (Steve I think) I was working with just looked at me as if to say 'yeah, so?'. No apology, no offer of a compensation part, nothing. I'm done with this place. Cannot recommend this place at all for cycling enthusiasts to shop for their gear. read more

This is a great non-profit dedicated to promoting cycling in St. Louis. They take in old bikes and rebuild them. The mechanically safe bikes are then placed in their small show room for sale to the public at a great price. There are plenty of unused bikes donated to Bicycle Works, but not enough volunteers to help them repair or rebuild them, so there might be a waiting list for one. On the other hand, the staff will personally size the bike for you, and won't sell you something that will break down in a week. On Saturdays, volunteers teach kids to build, repair, and fix a bicycle. The students then receive the bike (for free) after they complete the course. Another note: due to the sheer amount of bike models, replacement parts for any bike may be available at Bicycle Works. read more

Recently purchased a "new vehicle" from Bicycle Works, and let's just say it's one sexy beast that's right across the room in my apartment. It looks great, rides great, and was a pretty damn good deal to boot. If you swing by on Thursday evenings (perhaps call ahead, hours are funny here), you'll find the Bicycle Works staff selling off their recently repaired bikes at discount prices. The staff seemed very knowledgeable and friendly. They have a 30-day "no questions asked" return policy, but at least two employees cautioned that they actually will ask questions (i.e., it's preferred if you don't just "try one out"). Come on, guys. You can't have your policy and eat it too. It's in the middle of a quiet neighborhood, so if you're interested in taking a test ride around a block or two, it's no trouble at all. I wish I could give 6 stars. I recently bought an older bike from a friend. After the first use, the front brakes went bad. It was a Sunday, and I tried the only shop in St. Louis I knew was open. They were going to charge me over $85, and I honestly felt I was being take advantage of for being a beginner. The shop worker was a bit condescending (not on purpose) and charged me $15 for looking at my bike and tightening one bolt (without my approval). I paid the $15 and left because I didn't feel it would take nearly $85 to fix one single stripped nut on my brake. So I went to Bike Works a few days later. It took 15 minutes, and for HALF the price I was going to have to pay at the other shop, I not only got the brake fixed but I also got a helmet, a bell, AND a water bottle holder. I never once felt shamed or taken advantage of for being a beginner here. Bike Words is supreme. Period. read more

This place is AMAZING! It's a small store with lots of cool bikes and bike related things inside! The people are AWESOME and super helpful. I got there and expressed my enthusiasm early. The dude who was helping me (Jeff? Geoff?) helped me figure out what size bike i wanted. I told him I wanted baskets, so he and his coworkers found an old basket and spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to attach it to the bike I wanted. They have very nicely priced bikes (usually 120ish) and sell locks as well. It's like craigslist without the sketchiness and with much better selection. To make things better, buying from them makes me feel awesome because they're a non-profit that helps kids in the area. There's an earn a bike program and lots of cool things! This shop is deceitful and not upfront and honest about their sales on eBay. They put a set of brakes for sale for about $30 and I bought them. The next day I was refunded my money. I asked why and I was told an employee had bought them before item was put up for sale. I doubted the story and was about to leave negative feedback but I gave them benefit of the doubt. Fast forward about 5 months and the same pair of brakes show up again from them for $168. I inquired and they stated I educated them on the price of these brakes but I didn't educate them at all. They are dishonest and they state that their sales benefit charity. What a joke! It benefits them as they list themselves as the charity. Most businesses will honor a price they state by mistake but this charity bike shop cant honor what they sell. If it is a charity business, they should give the customer the benefit. In addition, I was told if they got another set, they would contact me. I know Patrick is gonna say we get parts in all the time and these aren't the same brakes but they are dated the same year as the ones I had purchased. I know you gave it time so that I would forget but if you really had another set, why not contact me? Why not list them for $30 like the set I bought? I never stated a value on the brakes as they sell from $20- 200 and the 200 is for nos brakes. It is clear that this shop isn't about charity of getting kids on bikes as they keep telling me. It is about making money and being dishonest. Goodwill stores wouldn't even list a bicycle brake for $168 but St. Louis Bicycle Works will because they conduct themselves more like a pawn shop. read more

While purchasing a bike at Bworks I asked the store manager Patric Von Dewch about the function of a particular part of a bicycle, I guess it was too much to handle since his response was "Its whatever you want it to be man". I guess the pay isnt good enough to deal with that kind of crap (questions). Its hard to recall the last time, if ever, that I've been treated with such disrespect especially while someone is holding my credit card. I was under the impression that this place had a mission of helpfulness and education sadly that mission doesn't seem to reach down to the (entire) workforce. This was years ago at this point, and on a return trip this person acted civil, people blow up and make mistakes but this crossed a line. read more

I would give this place 10 stars!!! My son had rented a horrible bike that kept breaking down near his college, and so we found this place. I don't understand these negative reviews on yelp. We went on Sat around 12:45 pm, figuring that it may be busy since it is only open from 10 to 2 pm. Tom a staff members immediately came up to us and tried to help. He inquired about my sons needs and he suggested different bikes he can try. While he was trying, I said that we would probably donate the bike back in May since he is graduating. He suggested the possibility of renting. An amazing durable bike for 100 dollars until next May!! My son tried the yellow bike and he liked it. Store did get a little busy so Tom had to help some body else, but a volunteer came over right away and showed us how the bike worked. Few minutes later, Tom came and did the paper work for us. It is a really nice bike, ones that is supposedly used as share bikes in places like Singapore etc. We took it outside to my car and was struggling to put it in, and Tom came out and helped! He said there is even a delivery service. We did manage to put it in, but the back door did not close so Tom got an inner tube from the store and tied it on the back door to keep it shut. He was so great. I love this place, good people, super reasonable prices, great bikes, and just wonderful energy. read more

I love my Giant bike I bought from BWorks last year. My Granddaughter took Bike safety classes and earned her bicycle and helmet. She also took a computer class and earned a computer. This is a wonderful program for youths. There is a writing class too which she plans on attending. The staff is willing to help and friendly. My Granddaughter loved the program and her teachers. I am enrolling my Grandson in the program for Spring. The building is GORGEOUS and the bikes are high end bikes for low cost. I love the BWorks, they repair bikes also. Debby read more
