me and my boyfriend were just looking for some cool stores to go into in Havelock nc. I said babe let's go to Bill's pet shop. We walk in and let me tell you it was the worst mistake of my life. I had actually bought two ferrets from here previously. I decided to ask about the Marshalls ferret pet insurance bullshit and the lady that helped me was just ugly and rude. She wore an ugly green hoodie and had black hair. As we're strolling around the store we stumble upon the snakes, I took a look at the snake and he was quite big for his enclosure not better yet his home was crushing him I am not the type of person to go up and confront someone about a business when it really is none of my business I don't work there better yet I don't even like steak steaks but this was just sad to see on top of it the workers were fucking rude read more

I don't understand why there are so many bad reviews. My guess is that instead of contacting them when something goes wrong, they just jump on and give a negative review. I've been going into both stores for over twenty years. Any time something has gone wrong, they've happily made it right. Try talking to the staff before you leave a bad review. read more

Absolutely terrible customer service! I went in to get a bag of dog food. I was holding my infant son and a 33 lbs of dog food. Neither one of the employees stopped their conversation to help me. Not to mention the dog food was about $8 more then everywhere else I've gone. read more

I like the variety of pet snacks and supplies that Bill's pet shop has for my dogs. This location is next to my favorite Waffle House and we stop by after having breakfast to get the fur babies snacks to chew on while we do Sunday chores. We usually get bully chews, duck heads, red barn brand chews and once in a while a squeaky toy. When we visited today, there were 3 ferrets for sale and they were adorable! I wish I could have more pets but the 3 dogs we have now are plenty. There were also puppies in the back for sale. There's a weekly list of what breeds are coming in and they usually go fast, especially the more popular ones (corgis, doodles) that get sold out before the puppies even make it to the shop. The staff is nice and they seem genuinely concerned for the animals in the store and are very polite when checking out. I'm glad to support this locally owned shop. read more

I will never go onto either one of Bill's pet stores! I wish they would ban selling puppies in pet stores in every state. Puppies need to come from reputable breeders that breed to better the dog breed not backyard breeders that pump out puppies. Reputable breeders do health screenings on their dogs before breeding. No reputable breeder would ever sell their puppies to a pet store so they can sit in a crate all day. I went in the store and several of the puppies had feces all over their behinds. I had a conversation with Billy and he said they came from good breeders. So sad. People need to stop buying from pet stores. Look up AKC and find a breeder that cares about their dogs and who they go to. Shame on you Bill's Pet store you will never get my business! read more

I was in here today with my VERY nervous dog for a new harness. The staff was so sweet and patient. The young lady that helped me fit her for the appropriate sized harness, held her while I went to grab a big bag of dog food, and offered days that are usually not busy so I could come in and help socialize my dog. I always have great service there and today with my dog in tow was top notch! read more

Bought fish for my sons 7th bday! He was so excited, I know nothing about fish, so I had lots of questions. I asked the young girl assisting me and she knew absolutely nothing about fish. She told me some info would be printed with my purchase. This didn't happen and she looked at me like an idiot when I asked abt the info. I was told If the fish die within 48hr I can bring them back for an exchange, no mention at all abt water quality!. Got home, got the fish slowly adapted to the water as I do know at least that much. The fish died in 1 day. Brought them back, a man this time did some water test and told me my ammonia levels were too high and that I have to run the tank longer before adding fish. This would've been nice to know which I had asked the girl every question I could think of and she just kept saying"idk much abt fish". So the store refused to exchange the fish, even though I was given no information, it's was blamed on "unfortunately we have new staff that haven't finished training" which to me sounds like a them problem not my problem. They shouldn't have staff running the place alone that don't know anything abt the animals they are selling. So now I'm out $60 and all my son got for his bday is dead fish. Never ever shopping here again and it's a shame bc Bill is super nice, his staff however is completely useless ! read more

I've encountered all kinds of issues in the Havelock location. First it's horribly difficult to get help. Secondly, I can understand why people say they are ignored because it's happened to me many times. Now, recently I've probably spent over $120 on fish to come back a week later and find out there's disease in the tank! Of course, after my fish died past their 2 day warranty there's nothing I can do. So, I would advise to stay away from the Havelock location. I can't speak for the New Bern location. I sure hope it's better than Havelock. Seems to me like they would put someone in Havelock that has a vested interest in it being a total success. read more

One good thing I can say is they have some Beautiful fishes and other animals but I bought to goldfish on a Thursday on the way home from a trip I had a 10 gallon tank ready for them at home with the temperature set I did what the lady told me to help the adjust to the water and made sure the water was conditioned but the both died the next day one died when I went to work the other died later on that night. I don't understand how people are leaving bad reviews! I got my 4 month old Pembroke Welsh Corgi here and he is absolutely amazing!!! I had a two year old Corgi that was a spitting image of Zero who is the one I have now, he's healthy and growing up to be a big boy! I have not had any issues at all with him! If everyone took care of their animals and go by what the sales people say that work there you shouldn't have any problems! Big shout out to Adrian for telling me he was there! He has bought so much joy to my life since I lost my two year old corgi to pet suffocation! Girl you deserve a raise!!! I will be bringing Zero in to have a visit with everyone and Bill! Nothing good to say. We were in line for crickets and the employee helped someone and walked away completely. The other employee helped the person behind us. No one want to help us. The prices for the bugs are outrageous. The reptiles were not happy or healthy and there was an Employee hitting the glass on the reptiles. And iv never seen or smelled dubia roaches that stink and half dead before you buy them. read more

Everybody at the store was very helpful in my selection of a Russian tortoise Both Brandy and Andrian showed great patience in helping me set up my tank for Clyde It took 2 days for this process to occur and they were very helpful. They were very knowledgeable in all areas. I cannot say enough good things about the store. If you want expert advice on any pet related matter this is your place. I was at their competition last week snd was instructed to use distilled water t o fill my aquarium This made me even appreciate this store more. I have never left a pet store so appalled by the conditions. I wish it were possible to give negative stars. The first thing I noticed was that the bunnies, hamsters, rats, mice, and gerbils were very crowded. The bunnies and some other small pets had access to a water bowl, instead of a water bottle, which they had promptly filled with their bedding. As bunnies and other small pets do. That's why they need a water bottle that's off the ground, so their water will stay safe to drink. The second thing was they had a large, gorgeous python who's the shop pet. This python's cage is nothing but a box with a light in the center. If they knew ANYTHING AT ALL about reptile care, they would give her a temperature gradient so she could regulate her body temperature the way reptiles need to, perhaps even something to climb on or if they really give a rat's a** about her, maybe a bigger cage. Her water was the size of a dog's water bowl. and it was dirty, no surprise. Pythons need to be able to submerge their bodies in water, and you could tell by how dry her scales were that she's in need. Her little box was maybe 2 feet deep and 3.5-4 feet long. It was pathetic. I feel very bad for her. After seeing that, I wasn't surprised at all by the young alligators in fish tanks who also need much bigger cages. But at least they had access to water. The puppies and kittens from the puppy mills and backyard breeders were in cages with wire bottoms, which are bad for their little paws. They were very expensive, all of the puppies were $400. Please do these dogs a favor and go adopt a dog in need. I'm sure the puppies will end up in a shelter if they reach 3 months of age and aren't tiny anyway, or get clearanced the way any pet store will do. I felt nauseated as I walked around the rest of the store. I noticed that the finches were also quite crowded, most of the saltwater fish looked discolored from stress and small tanks, and all of the reptiles lacked a temperature gradient, and any sort of shelter or climbing access. The final number that disgusted me the most was the 10 gallon fish tank on the front desk which has a mix of fledgling birds in it. All so young you can't tell what kind of bird they are. There was no food or water in the cage accept for a millet stick to nibble on. I checked the tag and they are 3 different types of conure and one cockatoo. I'm no bird expert but I'm fairly certain you are not supposed to mix fledglings with other species. The poor babies were huddled together for warmth. There was no heating pad or light bulb anywhere near the tank. This disgusting store has a nice selection of food and pet supplies but I would never, ever give my business to a store who cares so, so poorly for it's pets. read more

NEVER buying saltwater fish from this place EVER AGAIN. I've had issues with fish dying from them and didn't think too much about it as that's life, but final straw was when I got one shrimp and one PJ cardinal and their diseases wiped out my entire tank. Not impressed. I recently moved here and was so excited to see an exotic pet shop close by. First going in there I realized how poor the conditions were. Every single animal wasn't in proper enclosures. On top of that, the staff is rude. One girl stood out. I'd been there about 4 times and she had an issue with me every single time I was there. I was sent over the edge when I didn't understand her mumbling and she gave me attitude when I asked her to repeat her question. I also had purchased two ferrets from this place. Anyone who's ever worked closely with small animals knows they can carry ring worm. It happens. I brought these guys home and they wouldn't stop itching. It was extremely noticeable. They were so uncomfortable. About a week/ week and a half later I end up with ringworm. You'd think someone who works there and actually gave a sh*t about those animals would notice and do something. That place is disgusting and I refuse to return. I went to their location in New Bern and bought a $400 ferret cage. Literally 5 days later and my ferrets broke through the metal bars. Sounds insane I know. I was surprised. I asked for a refund, provided proof and my receipt and I was told there was nothing they could do. They had the same cage for sale and was advertised as a FERRET cage. I cannot stand this business. They have a wide variety of animals but everything is in terrible condition including the animals. Just checked this place out today for the first time since moving here in October. It's a nice and clean little shop with a pretty good selection. I came in to get training treats as I have a dog training business and they had a couple options. The staff was very friendly and greeted us as we walked in as well as checked on us while we were shopping! The reason I'm giving 4 stars which I know is based on opinion is I hate to see shock collars right when I walk in the door. Being a positive reinforcement trainer these break my heart. I also am slightly weary of the bunnies, ginuea pigs, and ferret pen to not have a top on it just because I can see children driving them crazy and possibly hurting them. I hope that's not the case because they all seemed so sweet and their cages were kept very clean! Over all a great little shop! read more

For years the locations in Havelock and New Bern (Morehead City when it used to be open) have been my go to locations for our dogs lizards and fish. Bill himself often assists me at the New Bern location. The selection of pets and supplies couldn't be better and any one that has paid money for the moribund crickets that are available at the chain stores in the area will appreciate what they provide. The fish are often from local providers and I am a huge fan of their selection of angel fish. I felt compelled to leave a review because every time that I look up their hours I see negative reviews and my experience over the years couldn't be more different. The staff are great and particularly when it comes to living creatures and caring for them I will always opt for a local business over a soulless big box chain store. read more

I have had a backyard pond since 2013. I kept goldfish in it until two years ago (I'm a beginner and wanted to ensure I had the pond healthy, balanced, and predator-deterred before adding koi) when I added my first koi, purchased from Bill's (Havelock). A beautiful healthy fish which has grown exponentially, I decided to add more koi to the school today. I asked the lady cleaning the rocks if she was well versed in koi (figuring she would get the appropriate help if she wasn't or if she was too busy), and she gave a lukewarm response without offering to get me the assistance I needed beyond a "fish catcher." Any reasonable questions I asked were answered in a dismissive if not rude manner and I nearly left without purchasing except that I had made a 40 minute drive specifically for this purpose. I left feeling 'less than' and entirely dissatisfied other than the lovely fish I selected and probably paid too much for given the lack of service. I won't be coming back. Doubt I will go to the New Bern store either. As we like to say in our home: this is America, and we have choices. read more

We've been here a few times and have never had good experiences. The staff is very un-attentive, and their dishonesty borderlines neglect. On my last (and definitely final) visit I personally observed as a store worker pealed an expiration label from the bottom of a product that I had mentioned was almost out of date. Not only is this illegal and dishonest, but also potentially harmful or fatal to a pet if ingested after it has gone bad. Puppies are housed in poor living conditions and are definitely puppy-mill dogs or dogs and kittens that are being sold for a profit after being found or taken from the shelter. I managed with a pet store for over four years, and based on my expenses with this shop would strongly recommend people shop elsewhere. read more

Not clean. Smells bad . They have large selection of fish & reptiles. You pretty much have to walk by large, scary snakes or gators to get to birds. Last bag of bird food I bought had moths. I guess the spider webs on the shelf should have told me how long the bag was there. I usually try to support locals, but in this case I do not. Service so-so. I have tried to order stuff that either took weeks to come in or when I'd finally called, it had been in for weeks. read more

The day I was in there the owner had stepped on one of the dogs paws and they just put him back away in his cage. He was so clearly in pain and limping terribly. My heart was broken! the owner said he is a dog and he will have to shake it off!!! I bought a bird that same day and he and his cage is terribly infested with bugs. I have trying to rid of the bugs and care for this little bird the best I can. It is so sad. This store is very dirty and bug infested. All the animals look so sad and unkept. I bought a Boston Terrier from a couple in Havelock when we looked through the paper work they bought the dog from Bill's Pet shop on Rt 70. They had the dog for three days and put her on the Craigs list. We had her for three weeks and she died in my arms. She began to cough on Sat afternoon and we were going to take her to a vet on Monday but she died in my arms less than 24 hours later. She was tired and breathing uneasy but eating and seemingly doing ok no digestive problems.We think she had a heart problem and died in seconds. The pet shop knows that certain breeders have sick puppies and continue to buy and sell to unsuspecting people its a shame. Please do not buy any animals from this store. read more

I hate that this is the only pet store in Havelock, when I can, I choose to go to PetSmart over here, which is sad because I would rather support small businesses. This location the staff is not friendly, they don't even greet us when we walk in the door, four staff people where standing at the counter when we walked in, but were too busy chatting with each other to greet us, but they never greet us with a "hey, let us know if you need any help" or even just "hey" . They are not knowledgeable about the foods they carry or foods they don't carry (meaning something that would be better suited for your dogs needs that they wouldn't carry regularly, but can get from their distributer). They sell puppies, which for me is a huge problem to me, because those puppies come from puppy mills, which if you don't know about puppy mills Google it! They can try and deny it but no reputable breeder will sell to a pet store as they have high care, standards for their dogs and pride in their puppies, the pet store couldn't turn a profit from a reputable breeder. There is a reason PetSmart and petco do not sell puppies, but instead work with local rescues. It's sad that the only way they feel they can get you to keep returning to their store is by selling puppies, but with poor customer service what else do they have I guess. I will be ordering my pet food online from now on so I do not have to shop at their store ever again. BTW I worked in the pet industry for 8+ years so I do know what I am talking about... read more

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful whenever you come by and if you ever have any questions they are definitely there to help. First, the map lead me to the post office which is like 2 miles down the road. If you have the same issue, drive towards Walmart, it's next to the Dollar General. The prices were pretty high, there were dead fish, BUT it didn't smell bad, and I've been in stores much worse off. It would be 3 or 4 stars if the directions were correct. read more
