It was a very special and intimate night here as I was invited to watch Journey from The Fall by director Ham Tran, he made this in 2006 just a year after I came to the US, the story was about boat people and their journey coming to the US as they fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon. In a way I felt very related as I also came to the States that year on my own. It was a sad stories, as the movie original copy was lost in a fire in Thailand, it was challenging to make, produce and distribute as the film talked about a sensitive topic which the Vietnamese government wouldn't approve, then luckily the entire film was funded by all the Vietnamese folks in the OC community. It was great to watch it in 35 mm, to sit and listen to Ham and the composer of the film talk about how the movie has been made. UCLA has a very good location for students and actors to watch and learn great film makings, especially the Hammer little theater here.

I've been to…read morethis type of luxury theatre many years ago and it's definitely a good way to treat yourself. My son has been wanting to see Devil Wears Prada 2 and the first one is one of his favorite movies of all time. Personally, I don't like that movie but I went along with him. Tickets are $25 each and they have a $4 parking garage, but we were lucky enough to get a free after-hour meter on the street. It's a nice place and it seems like comfort is their top priority. The recliner chairs are extremely comfy and come with a blanket in case you get cold. You know how movie theaters are always chilly. Once you get settled, you can press a button that sends an employee over to take your order. It's completely optional. We got one small popcorn (light butter, $6) which was big enough for both of us. I like this idea of having the option of ordering and dining at your seat while watching a movie, but the reality is a bit different. It's kind of annoying to see the employees coming and going when someone needs a refill or places a new order during the movie. You can hear them talking and they can even block your view. It's frustrating when you are trying to focus. With that being said, I think it has more pros than cons. There are bars and bathrooms located across the several floors and the one we went to was exceptionally clean. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back to this theatre. I prefer something more standard like AMC or Pacific Theatres (RIP!)...

I've seen some great independent movies here and really enjoyed "Influenced"on my latest visit as part of the very fun LA Jewish film festival. Our movie was 7:30 and I was antsy since I only was able to pay until 9. The concession counter had the go to snacks and fresh popcorn. We ate dinner nearby at cafe Belen to support another local business. Next time we'll grab churros as our sweet treat post movie. As for recommendations, The seats could be upgraded if you're comparing to the lazy boy seats from AMC. You could feel and hear the springs. The bathrooms could also use renovations. There's many narrow stalls and rusted fixtures.

But I am SO GLAD I was recently afforded the opportunity to finally check it out when I was granted tickets to a screening/Q&A of Omaha. They only have 1 screen but I loved how it's a great balance between vintage + modern. Usually with the former, you expect uncomfortable seats but I found these to be quite comfortable, with plenty of legroom and good stacking of rows so that your view isn't compromised. The theater itself is spacious AND gorgeous in its own right. May sound silly but I also judge movie experiences considering concession - here, although there are only a couple of operators, they run the lines efficiently and their popcorn is fresh and tasty (even when the butter topping is administered on their end). I could see required street parking being a challenge but I haven't had an issue in the surrounding areas that time, or since. Yes, after this screening I signed up for the Landmark Theatres loyalty program because I knew I'd definitely be back. And already have, for another Q&A (the film Forge). I love that they screen indie films and extend opportunities like this for fairly reasonable prices.

What we didn't know was that this presentation was being performed by noted actors for an audio play or podcast. So, what does that mean? This smallish theater was set up with microphones, recording equipment, chairs and stools for the actors, few background stage changes AND a Sound Effects Artist. For older generation folks, this live recording format is akin to radio broadcasts (if you can imagine pre-television) with live audiences in attendance. The storyline for Sisters Matsumoto told about a Japanese family who had been interned at Arkansas' Rohwer War Relocation Camp and their resilience to rebuild their lives after being released back to their family home in Sacramento, California. The story is relevant to today's politics and shows this dark period in American history. After the play, the founder and Producing Director of L.A. Theatre Works, Ms. Susan Albert Loewenberg, led a lively and thought-provoking discussion featuring the playwright (Philip Kan Gotanda), actor/activist George Takei and director Tim Dang. The theater is located in UCLA's Melnitz Hall (closest to the northern edge of the campus just off Sunset Boulevard at Hilgard Avenue) with lots of parking in adjacent parking structure number 3. Melnitz Hall is UCLA's School of Film, Television and Digital Media Department's production and teaching facilities. The James Bridges Theater is a state-of-the-art venue screening venue. Needless to say, we enjoyed both the production and the venue and hope that we'll be back for more of LATW's productions.

I didn't have cash so I was instructed to pay at one of the Pay stations in the garage. That ended up being a much cheaper option at $4 for two hours. The theatre was small and intimate. There were refreshments offered beforehand. All of the actors were wonderful. Each played a handful of characters. I loved that the backdrop was projected and pair with superior sound effects and score. It was more like watching a movie. Spill was a wonderful story about the 2010 oil spill. Most can recall seeing this event in the news, but I was even able to learn a lot that I didn't know. Score.

Review #925 2025-103…read more My gal pal invited me & my son to attend a Zootopia 2 private industry screening at The Crescent Theater with her husband. Located on Crescent Dr. & Wilshire Blvd., The Crescent Theater is a 114-seat private theater with 4K Christie CP-4220 Digital Cinema projector & 5.1 audio equipment that's calibrated regularly along with the light level for optimal settings. An underground parking garage is located off Crescent Dr. just north of Wilshire Blvd. Proceed to the single "visitor" lane, select the "ticket" button for a parking ticket, & proceed to P2 or P3 for parking. Make sure to get a validation sticker for your parking ticket, & stick it on the non-printed/blank side to be scanned at the time of exit. The assigned theater parking was relatively empty & dark, my son said it was kinda scary being in the garage & hurried to the elevators. Once we arrived to the designed floor, there was clear signage directing you to the theater. An agent was posted near the entrance to check-in guests; no tickets or QR codes like the regular theaters. The theater itself was nice with gradual stadium seating. We sat in the middle at the right edge, but still had a nice view. The movie was scheduled to start at 1:00 PM, & the projectionist started the movie about 10-mins. after; no movie previews to sit through. Yasss! Due to the private nature of the screening, no drinks (except bottled water) & snacks are allowed, & none were provided. The sound was crisp & clear, though a bit too loud for my taste. The seats were ok; normal, no reclining with barely enough space for someone to walk past without stepping on your toes. The audience was respectful of others; no one was talking, the kids stayed in their seats, no crinkling or rustling of snack bags. It was a pleasant experience with no conflicts... we thoroughly enjoyed watching Zootopia 2 at The Crescent Theater on a Sunday afternoon. There's a bright, airy lobby that's perfect for lounging before & after the movie. It's currently decorated for the winter holidays. No concession stand like the typical theater. I love The Crescent Theater... would love to be invited back for future screenings!
