Nice view from the restaurant. We tried the fried clams, shrimp, and scallops. All were cooked very nicely and were flavorful. The fish stew was very nice, too. It was thin, creamy and buttery, and full of seafood. Thumbs up to that. I also tried the Caesar salad - bleah. The food was very tasty but it's a bit overpiced in my opinion. The food is good service is good however Im not a seafood fan and they used to have really good turf. Probably their bast with the baby back ribs but they removed it from the menu. Its was a great place to go even if you dont like seafood but the selection has really gotten limited. This has been a Wells landmark for years. The food is pretty good and the prices are reasonable. I tried the Lobster Mac & Cheese, very good! Cheese was not to overpowering and had some nice chunks of lobster. The fried seafood is also very good. Portion sizes are a pretty good size. My only complaint is that it can be very loud. It's sometimes hard too hear the person talking at the table with you. Nice views of the ocean as well. read more

We stopped in for a quick bite - late afternoon snack with later dinner plans. We both had a cup of chowder with on tap selection from a wide selection from local Hidden Cove Brewery. Went to Billy's today with 5 friends. We are all retired from teaching and choose a new lunch spot every month to visit. This was, by far, the worst experiece we have ever had. The food was overcooked and overpriced but the worst part was how we were treated. One friend ordered the baked haddock special. When it arrived she forked through it and took one bite. It was so dry and overcooked she decided to tell our waitress. Our waitress sent the manager over who proceeded to tell my friend that since she had eaten over half of the fish there was nothing she could do. The rest of us spoke up that she had eaten just one bite and had only spread the out fish to cool it down. At that point she said she would send out another dish. In the mean time another friend was told that her meal would be delayed because another waitress had taken it to another customer. We were all finished eating when the other meal finally arrived. It was also dry and the stuffing was as hard as a rock. The waitress was told that this dish was also unacceptable. Our checks arrived and it was discovered that the friend who first complained was charged twice. half price for the returned dish and full price for the new one. They did remove the cost of the late meal however. The manager again arrived and was told by my friend that she would not be paying the half price for the returned meal. The manager again told her quite loudly that she had in fact eaten most of the dish. This was so rude and unacceptable that we were all stunned that a manager would treat us so poorly. In the end she very rudely said, "OK I'll take it off your bill." Perhaps the manager is very inexperienced or she is just rude I have no idea but we will never go back. read more

This was just a Ok place for dinner. The staff was wonderful. They greeted us and seated us as soon as walked in the door. Everyone was super friendly,quick, and informative. The food however was not what I was expecting. I ordered the award winning clam chowder that was loaded with clams and onions but it was made with milk and had butter floating on top of it. It was ok but there was really no awarding winning qualities to it at all. I had the stuffed baked haddock which was supposed to be stuffed with a seafood stuffing. The dish was delivered to me with the stuffing on the bottom of a small casserole dish with the piece of haddock over the top of it. The stuffing was more breading than anything with traces of three of maybe four pieces of shrimp. The stuffing tasted old to me and was beyond crisp and in some parts marginally burned, especially around the edges. My wife went with the steamed lobster and was very satisfied and we had Cousin Mary with us who opted to go with a chicken sandwich which was satisfying to her. 2 stars for never getting food poisoning. That's cool. The food quality is diner at best but add $40 to your bill cuz you gotta help them pay for the real estate. Lobster rolls are some lobster in some shitty bread and if you plan on ordering Mac and cheese for your kid - don't. You're paying $$$ for kraft Mac and cheese I could have brought from our hotel room. The last time I ordered clam chowder I didn't have a single clam. The employees are almost always in a bad mood and have no qualms about setting hot ass food right in front of a 1.5-2year old so they can get burned. Neat. I've been here many times over the years because for some reason the family likes it but I'm sick of paying $$$$ for $ food quality. Dinner Saturday night and Billy's was mobbed. We were seated promptly at our arrival 5:45. Our server, Shannon, could not have been better. She knows the menu items well enough to answer our questions and immediately understood our somewhat creative, slightly complicated choices. She was prompt, efficient yet friendly and made us feel totally comfortable. I had the large baked haddock after asking Shannon about sizes (small vs large) with baked potatoes and the night's vegetable which was fresh string beans. My wife had the fried haddock bits and we shared a garden salad and stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. Let me tell you these guys know how to cook fish! Both haddock dishes melted in your mouth. The string beans were the most delicious ever (and we grow our own and have been feasting on fresh all summer). We both enjoyed the mushrooms as the stuffing was very good. On the internet, I recently seen a listing of the best seafood restaurants in every state; Billy's Chowder House was listed as being the best seafood restaurant in the state of Maine. Much to my surprise, Billy's was located right in the area that my wife and I have vacationed the past few years. I looked up Billy's restaurant on the internet to learn more. In bringing up the website, there was an offer to sign up to receive regular emails from the restaurant and in return they would offer a $15 savings if you had a dinner at their restaurant during your birthday month, an offer I couldn't pass up; an offer that almost sounded too good to be true. Today we went to Billy's to try the restaurant. The waitress recommended one of the specials for the day, a baked stuffed haddock in a lobster Newburg sauce. We asked our waitress about the discount I had signed up for and she said "we'll settle that up once you pay your bill," no mention of the rewards program that I would learn about later and the waitress seemed to be side stepping the discount issue. The meal was okay but not exactly what I expected. The cup of clam chowder I had was about as thick as milk, tasted okay but not exactly what I was use to for clam chowder. The piece of haddock tasted nice but my stuffed haddock contained no stuffing and it was a rather small piece of fish that sat in what looked like a thin clear butter rather than what I remembered other Newburg sauce that I have had that was typically white, thick and creamy. The vegetable and rice that came with the meal were good and about exactly what was expected. When it came time to pay the bill for the meal and a couple of glasses of wine that we had, the waitress came over with a small hand held computer to print the bill. We asked again about our discount and she asked for our email address. We provided the address; she said we weren't in the system. She repeatedly asked for the spelling of the address which we gave to her several times. Then she asked us to spell our last name, she replied no you are not here. She asked for my first name, my nickname, my phone number, my cell phone number and each time she said we weren't in the system. We asked then why are we getting emails from you. We showed her a recently received email, she just shook her said she didn't know. She then said to sign our bill, give me my tip and then you can talk to the manager, we followed her instructions. Upon seeing the manager she asked for our email. She entered it into her computer and she said sorry you are not in our system. We showed her the recent email message and she said it didn't come from them. Then she said that to receive the benefit program you need to sign up for our rewards program. I said when I signed up to receive the emails there was no mention of a rewards program. She said well you're not in the system. I again asked then why are we getting these emails. She said she didn't know and it wasn't coming from them. She refused to give us the promotion and we refuse to ever come back again. How they ever got rated as the best in the state is beyond me. My wife and I love Maine seafood but this place is no better than other seafood restaurants in the Ogunquit/Wells area and a whole lot less than some of the restaurants especially in the area of customer service. You can do better than warm milk for clam chowder and you will probably find stuffing in your haddock if that's what it's listed as. Stay away and you won't go through what we did. read more

Absolutely fabulous scallop appetizer! I'm hooked and will be coming back just for these. I had the lazy man's lobster and sweet potato fries. Interesting combination and expected a better choice of accoutrements. This and the TV's playing sports are the only negatives. Will have to check them out a second time to see if it is worth the drive from Cape Elizabeth. The waitress was super friendly and didn't hover around. Everyone's french fries were super greasy and tasted re-fried. OUR MEAL WAS WELL OVER $100.00. When we got to the hotel room that night, two of us were ill. And I ordered the food and told the lady I was going to hannafords around the corner and how long would it take.??they were very busy.. I said I would be 15 min she said that twofold be ok. When I got back she said ""the food was ready before I left!!""" .??? What? Fast good....no.. I just told her I had to go to hannafords and the food was ready before I left?? We have been coming to Billy's for over 30 years when our children were at USM. We vacationed at Moody beach for all of those years and Billies was always one of our favorite spots. Last night we were actually able to get in at a decent time. The food as always was wonderful ....service however not so good When we placed our drink order which were three glasses of wine she asked did we want them now or should she serve them with our meal???seriously?? Waitress got the appetizer wrong. Brought our salad with the entree (as a former restauranteur, a real no-no) one of the entrées was wrong and never brought the rolls. I had heard great things about Billy's so my family and I were excited to try it! Sadly i was very disappointed with the outcome. Our service was not good at all. She seemed annoyed with the fact we were not sure what to order yet and when we asked for another drink she never brought it. My boyfriend asked for rice with his dinner and they gave him fries. The delivery was excellent. Ordering was easy and went very smoothly. The fries and onion rings were outstanding and the burger was good as well. We ordered a baked haddock and a salmon, and they were awful. My friend complained on the salmon, but I just thought it might be a fluke, but my haddock seasoning tasted horrible, so I tried her salmon and it was barely edible. I threw out the haddock. I've gone here many times before, the service and food were more then exceptional. But tonight when going here with my family, the food was either dry and overcooked or cold and tasted like it was old. The service was completely wrong and slow as we waited for about two hours for all the food to arrive, even with all of the problems we continued on having fun and I personally went up to the waitress reassuring her that it wasn't her fault about the food and was going to give her a good tip of $50 since the problems were mostly with the food. But all of a sudden the owner burst into the area where are table was and berated us about how we harassed the waitress so much about the food and was crying for the passed thirty minutes. which I mind you we told her politely about the problems with the food and we saw her coming in and out of the area we were at, serving other people during that thirty minutes. He continued to demine us to the point that others stared at us like we were the ones at fault while he was the one to start the scene. We were mortified since everything was going smoothly and we were having fun to only be ruined by the actual owner of this place being absolutely aggressive only hearing one side of the story. We were continuously being polite asking for the bill to just leave but he continued to degrade me and my whole family. While we were leaving all we seen was all the waitresses starting to line up all the way to the exit, staring at us hatefully.
