Perfect beach food. I love a bacon cheese burger right on the beach. The sand just adds that extra mmmmmph. Charlie's does this bacon that's round ish and fits perfect. Ugh it's great, it's just what I needed. The French fries are greasy and homemade and again I loves it right on the sand. I've eaten inside before, it's nice and clean. Not cool cuz the doors open but still fine. I feel comfortable going in with a bathing suit top and shorts. It looks like they have a bar inside now which is great. It is what it is which is food on the beach. It's the closest place to just get quick food to bring back to the beach. We actually got it twice because my boys never wanted to leave the beach We got the hot dog which looked way better than the purple one they tried to give us next door. We got the fries which to me were good. The perfect frie but it felt like the oil hasn't been changed in awhile. The chicken tenders were very good but wish they had sweet and sour. This is a casual spot right off the beach featuring classic New England fare. Touristy? Yes. Should you expect differently? No. There's decent variety and everything my group ordered was edible. Tasty tuna rolls that came with a bag of "lightly salted" chips. If this is light salt I don't want to taste the regular version. The fries were reminiscent of the kind you buy at a carnival or on a boardwalk and really hit the spot. The least yummy items ordered were the clam chowder, which was a bit too watery, and the lobster roll, which was on the small side and just didn't compare to the great lobster dinner we had the previous night. Basic food and inexpensive. Perfect for grabbing a quick lunch to take back to the beach. It was nice to grab a simple hot dog and pay a normal price. Service was quick and food was good. I've gone here a few times....always with great success. But not anymore!!!! I'm from RI...so I know good seafood. One year I got their lobster bisque, and it was AMAZING. The following year they were out of the bisque...so I got a lobster roll...also AMAZING. So this year...I brought my family to experience this amazing bisque I've been describing. Only this time...It was basically broth!!!! I brought my "bisque" back up to the counter, and told them there was no lobster in it. (Last time, It was PACKED with lobster pieces). The guy behind the cooking line, said to the other guy " you have to stir the bisque before you scoop it out"...so the guy attempts to do it again. Apparently there was no lobster to scoop...because the whole container seemed like broth. I was fine at this point...because they were trying to rectify it....and it seemed like it was a genuine mistake made by an inexperience (non-bisque eating) expediter. But then things started getting shady. They weren't throwing away the bisque we gave back...and had our spoons in. It just sat on the counter...and they kept on staring at it. My sister was afraid they were going to try to pour it back in!!! So...somehow...they added lobster to our bisque...and we were about to go our merry way...when a hostile worker comes to the window and says "You know...BISQUE doesn't mean there's going to be chunks of lobster in. That's not what it is!" I explained that I go every year...and always had great experiences with it. He said " You must have gotten it on a good day!" I said " No problem. I just won't ever come back here again!" I didn't say this to him...but what he was serving...was not a bisque. It was the thickness of 1% milk!!!! Meaning...A soup! But also...the guy behind the counter...practically admitted guilty to it...by getting mad at the other guy for not stirring it properly! With lobster being the price per pound of Bologna this year...I don't think it's too much to ask that the lobster bisque actually have signs of lobster in it!!! I think this place was totally trying to take advantage of tourist. $7 for a cup of broth just doesn't cut it. Do NOT go here!!!! read more

Exactly what you expect from a beach lunch spot. My wife and I had a cheese burger (mine had bacon). Pretty standard burger at we're-the-only-lunch-spot-on-the-beach prices. Flat patty on a sesame seed bun. There was no lettuce or tomato on it. A pickle adorned the top of the bun. The fries were excellent. We ordered a small to share. They seemed to be cut from fresh potatoes. The woman on the cash register was very nice and friendly. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes and they have a good PA system so you can easily hear when your order is up. The cardboard carrying tray for all this food and two drinks was a little flimsy, but we made it back to our spot on the beach without incident where everything tastes good. I have been getting lunch at Charlies since I was an infant. My dad would walk from our spot on the beach (river side only) and come back with tons of lobster bisque, hotdogs, fries, sodas. Okay...so there's really not a lot of reason for this restaurant to even try to serve good food. They are located steps away from the beach and steps away from thousands of tourists that descend upon beautiful Ogunquit beach each and every day during the summer season. I didn't expect the food to be great; but, I did expect for almost $10.00 that the basket of chicken fingers and "homemade" french fries that I ordered for my son to be at least mediocre. No. What I was served instead was a basket containing sub-standard frozen chicken pieces (no sauce) and a few limp, greasy, and positively tasteless fries. Their menu board claims that they do not serve frozen fries but instead serve homemade, peeled and sliced daily fries from fresh potatoes. I've never seen a more lame excuse for a french fry than I was served here. Had my son not been hungry and had the crowds not been so deep, I would have sent back this horrid basket for a new one. My other quibble is their $16.95 lobster roll served with chips, probably $.20 worth of chips. With lobster prices down in the gutter this season there is no reason other than greed that this beach shack could get away with selling a tiny lobster roll for this price. I guess I should be happy that it is served with chips and not the dreadful aforementioned fries. Unless you are starving, and even then...make the short journey into the town's center and eat there (just don't eat at Bessie's which is an equally dismal dining experience). read more

Went here to grab a bite to eat before heading off to the beach. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and my friend went with a burger. While my friend's burger was not much to write home about, the chicken salad was actually pretty decent. I was a bit bummed that it was going to cost an additional $3 to make it into a wrap, but the hoagie they served it in wasn't too bad. Overall, this place appears to be pretty hit and miss and is one of the few options for food along the beach. Do yourself a favor and skip the burger and go with the chicken salad instead--you won't be disappointed. read more

Second lobster roll stop from Massachusetts to Maine. Staff very friendly but the lobster roll was very suspect in taste. Bun it was in wasn't bad, but the roll as a whole was bland and a bit "fishy". Definitely not a roll I would willingly eat again. read more

Food was average, a little pricey but it is in along the beach. It was $4.50 for a large handful of fries to give you a sense. The cashier did not give me the correct order and when i walked back up to correct it, she told me that she was correct and that I ordered the wrong item. This bothered me. I spent the entire summer searching for a well done lobster bisque and who knew that this would be the place I finally found it. Located right on the beach- literally- Charlies is a basic food stand with sandwiches, burgers, and seafood. The lobster bisque had a good -not great- amount of lobster in it and had a fantastic flavor for seven dollars! I saw one in town going for ten. I also love hand cut fries so I can't complain much about those, other than that they could have been less limp. If you're on the beach and you're hungry, just do it, man.
