I was surprised to see the price was $33+ per bottle - I purchased some locally in the last month for $26.....That's a significant difference! So why the difference in price? Well.....one staff told me that the price GOES UP when and item becomes popular...and another staff chimed in to say that they are a small store and don't get the 'big store discount'. Without a doubt, my favorite store in Annapolis. Bin201 is one of the best wine shops to which I've ever been. Their staff is bend-over-backward friendly and extremely knowledgable. They have a fantastic selection and it covers all price ranges. I visit the shop a few times per week and generally go in not really knowing what I want. The staff is always eager to help me pick out something new. They ask questions about the things I enjoy, what I plan on eating, that sort of thing. On almost every visit, they've selected something for me and they have yet to steer me wrong. I can honestly say that I've never been disappointed by any of their suggestions. One of the cool things about BIN, too, is that their wines are unusual sections. There are no mass market bottles here. Each is carefully selected and each is worthy (or so I've found so far). Since I moved back to Annapolis last year, BIN has become one of my most frequent haunts in town. Perhaps one of the coolest things about this place is it isn't a pompous wine store, they actually seek to educate people about wine with their classes. My girlfriend and I took the Binology 101 wine tasting class last weekend and had a great time while learning about wine and how to identify proper flavors. Festive. First of all I love the music streaming out the outdoor speakers at The Town Centre. I was walking out of Whole Foods wishing I weren't in MD because I like when they sell wine in the grocery stores. But then I noticed an inconspicuous Bin 201 on the corner. The only reason I walked in is because of the chalk board sidewalk sign that read "wine tasting" ...way to read my mind. Why have I not noticed this place before? There was a nice crowd of people sampling different wines, bottles stacked from the floor to the ceiling and even cheese and bread out to help clean the pallet. I guess it's okay that MD doesn't sell alcohol in the grocery store. This kind of place makes up for it. Just wish someone would notice me and give me a wine glass. read more

We came in here a couple times. Once to have some tastings and purchase some items, and 2nd time was to check on an order. The staff here is friendly and not intimidating at all. I have been to other tastings before when representatives force their preferences on you or up sell you, however, the staff here does neither. They are between four and five dollars more per bottle for crown royal than the surrounding stores... I guess that's how they have to pay that high rent in the shopping center. I had no idea that you couldn't buy wine at grocery stores in Maryland. Laws are so bizarre. Luckily, Bin 201 is directly across the way from Whole Foods, and the staff are super helpful. They offer a good deal on a wine club where you get a blind assortment of six wines. It seems like a great way to explore different wines. We stopped in to pick up a bottle for a friend's dinner, not knowing what they were serving or their tastes. A representative showed us a few popular ones, and we were not disappointed. read more

I am rating Bin 201 based on the beer and liquor section only. I have purchased wine and champagne here and I believe they have a thorough, nice selection and found them to be very friendly and helpful. However... I was standing in the back when the owner walked up and said "you look like you're contemplating our well curated beer section". Surprised at the statement and without trying to be rude, I said, "no, I've been in here several times staring at the beer section and usually can't make a choice. It's missing too many cornerstone beers and key styles." He then said "yeah, we unfortunately don't work with the largest beer distributor". I don't know what that means, but it amounts to a beer selection of one or two fantastic, highly rated American IPAs (which I don't care for in the winter months), and some odd craft beers from moderately to unheard-of breweries. Or, for example, only one single porter beer, but it's a smoked porter which requires a certain palate to enjoy. This results in me staring at, and three of four times walking away empty handed. I don't know if Bin 201 doesn't want to work with the distributor or they can't for some reason, but I find the beer selection to be sub-par. For a place that does such a good job on everything else, it makes me wonder if they should just not carry beer at all so it doesn't make one disappointed after perusing. Regarding liquor, the same thing applies although to a lesser extent. In today's age of super, ultra, unique, hand-crafted, rare, gourmet, craft alcoholic beverages, you would expect this store to match what they do in wine with their beer and liquor selections. read more

There are always wines available for tasting, and they offer fun tasting classes covering everything from the basics to specific regions. The best deal, though, is the $99 case of the month. Twelve bottles for under a hundred dollars, and you get to sample all sorts of things that you might not otherwise try out. I was a bit disappointed with their South African wine selections; but the store has plenty of everything to choose from. So so so super excited that I got my butt up early this morning and got out to Bin 201 for their annual BIN-2-OH!-1-DAY celebration (February 1st). After wandering down each and every aisle and checking out their deals for the day, I decided on purchasing two wines in addition to their February Wine Box. Each month Bin 201 picks 12 different and unique wines to be placed into their Monthly Wine Box that they sell for $99.00. On BIN-2-OH!-1-DAY the employees placed prices in some of the Monthly Wine Boxes. This made me nervous because I didn't know which box to pick! I never win anything so I didn't thing much of picking out a box and went with the box in aisle two on the very bottom. At the cash wrap all three employees were begging me to open the box in front of them so that they could cheer me on if I won. I told them not to hold their breath. And...BOOM, SURPRISE! GOT A GOOD ONE! I purchased a box that had a coupon for a FREE WINE BOX! Literally, I won 12 bottles of wine, FOR FREE!!!! *Insert happy feet dance.* So I get to come back up here between March and September of this year and walk away with a box =) Free shopping is the best shopping! I tried to get all my friends up there but no one budged. Their loss! Please note that this retail location has wine classes and wine tastings. The wine classes are amazing! So far I have attended the Binology 101: The basics of wine tasting and have plans on doing the other ones as they become available. Most of these classes are $29.00 - $39.00 a person and are 90 minutes long. The wine tastings are held on Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. The tickets are $10.00 with the $10.00 going toward any of the featured wines you tasted during the event. Both the classes and wine tastings require advance reservations. If you can't make it you are able to reschedule or get store credit. On a side note: I absolutely love their take on graphics that they use for advertising and merchandising. What a fantastic place not only do they have an expansive collection of wines that cover regions all over the country and world but they also have a collection of liqueurs and beer. Bin also holds a series of tasting classes called Binology 101. Recently I attended the Binology 103: Beautiful Burgundy and I must say what a fantastic event! The gentleman who hosted was thorough with history and facts of the region explaining all the components that make up the wines. I have not been disappointed when I ask for a recommendation. I find the prices to be competitive, and you can often purchase cases at a discount, as with most wine/liquor stores. I have not attended any of the classes or tastings they offer yet, but have heard positive feedback and would like to attend in the future. Wine is their thing, but they do have an ok selection of liquors and beer. If you're looking for the basics in liquor, it's a decent selection but you may not find what you need. I received fantastic service here today. Sometimes, what a business does to correct an error speaks volumes. My wife and I bought a mixed case last night. The store was busy with people tasting a few featured bottles (Bin201 is great about it) and another customer putting a case together. We figured out this morning that some mistakes were made and so we went back this morning. Not only were they friendly and efficient in making the corrections, but when the corrected sale resulted in me owing a few dollars more, they waived it off.
