Beautiful patio looking out into Pauoa Bay. I had dinner here on their outdoor patio area with my husband and friends. The ambience was simply magical! Binchotan Bar & Grill is located in the Fairmont Orchid Hotel in the Mauna Lani Resort area. Their patio has a view the resort grounds and the bay. The patio and resort grounds were illuminated with gas torches and string lights. creating a relaxing tropical vacation vibe. Their menu featured a selection of small plates, entrées, sushi rolls, and their signature robatayaki. Their drink menu had their standard cocktails, non-alcoholic options, and a list of sakes to choose from. We started off with a sake flight which consisted of 3 types of sakes. We also ordered chicken karaage, edemame, and pork gyoza for appetizers. For main, we all went for the full traditional robotayaki grill experience. Appetizers came out first and piping hot. The personal robotayaki grill came out and the serving portions were huge. The robotayaki grills was heated with charcoal creating a distinctly smoky flavor. Each order came with a couple skewers of ribeye, chicken, prawns, mahi mahi, and mushroom. There were also a decent serving of asparagus. Service was excellent. Our server anticipated our needs and consistently checked in. Everyone in our party we would come back again for dinner. One side note about parking. There is both self park and valet. We ended up valet parking for the convenience.

Service was incredible. We took all the recommendations from our waitress and we were happy with the choices. My favorite was the Mac nut shrimp. It was a beautiful night to eat outside, nice and cool and the environment was quiet and enjoyable!

What a great last dinner on a beautiful island. The setting was perfect , patio seating with the tiki torches lit around us. The smells of the charcoal grilled food, made me hungrier. We ordered the wagyu beef on hot stone. The Tradition grill - we d as put the small one. Lobster appetizer, and mochi for dessert. This was on the pricey end, however worth the experience.

This was just not good. I was so disappointed with this place. This restaurant is in the heart of one of the best resorts but it was so bad with two exceptions: complimentary macha bread was pretty good and the hot stone with Wagyu was terrific. Everything else was not. Big Island Roll (1/5), Puna Chicken Curry (3/5), and Sweet & Spicy Tteokbokki (0/5). The drinks were no better: Lychee Saketini (had to send it back). This is a hard pass.

Everything we ordered are absolutely delicious!!! This is located inside the Fairmont hotel, can park at the hotel guest parking for free. No tickets needed. They do require reservations so make sure you call ahead of time to reserve. Highly recommend the traditional skewers!!! All skewers are super delicious!! The pork fried rice is also very good. Great service and definitely a must try Japanese place in town!

My first impression was undesirable when the hostess told us it would be an hour wait for our party since we didn't have a reservation, despite there being plenty of open tables. I subsequently went on open table and made us a reservation within ten minutes...we went back a few minutes later and were seated right hot away. I don't know what was up with that, but that hostess must have felt silly. Ambiance: the outdoor seating section is beautiful at the Fairmont resort. The seating area is surrounded by tiki torches at night and the gardens of the resort. Service: our server was great at explaining the menu items, however she didn't check in on us very often. The staff was accommodating of my shellfish allergy, but brought out all the food at once. I would've preferred the courses to be spaced out a bit. Food: We orders the tiny crispy rice to start, which was very fresh. We got the Robatayaki traditional experience for two, which was fun and included two small skewers of each protein and vegetable over a grill. It came with some sauces and spices, but I had to ask for an explanation of those. It would've been helpful if they suggested what protein to pair each sauce with. The experience came with white rice, but we chose to upgrade to pork belly fried rice. The up charge for this was $25 and quite a bit more than we were expecting. It was very good though and a large bowl. The steak skewers were well done. My husband loved the shrimp skewers, which happen to be the one that I couldn't try. I think the mahi mahi was next best. Pricing was expensive for what you get, but you are at an oceanfront resort.

The food it took way too long and also doesn't taste as good as it looks. Everything else was good

This is their version of Hawaii King sweet bun, they named it Matcha Tea bun, served with honey butter. It's a hit - really tasty.

Food: Great Service: Great Ambiance: It's a little dark for my personal taste after sunset, and our first table was full of ants, so we asked to be reseated. But overall, we had a great time. The chairs are comfortable, the table is stable on its four legs, no shaking. One thing: don't order coffee there. They claim to serve 100% Kona, but it tastes like a very bad and watered-down drink that only smells like coffee. Avoid.

This place is gorgeous and freaking delicious. I was almost scared off by haters, even though the menu looked great. I guess some things can get expensive. But what I got was filling, interesting, healthy and flavorful - in a really pretty setting at the Fairmont Orchid and with great service from Jayson and others. (Efficient & with aloha!!) My cocktail was $26 - but for that price it better be worth it. Highball with luxardo bianco, champagne & elderflower. YUM. ROOT VEGETABLE SALAD: HUGE & tasty and healthy for $16. A bargain EDAMAME: nothing special but it's what you expect. CRISPY TUNA app: YUM. I'm full between that and the root vegetable. Other things we got: ASPARAGUS ROBATA: delish and with a super sauce. WAYGU BEEF on the rock: yes, this is an expensive product. But it was a little small for $32. They liked it though. WAYGU SHORT RIB DONBURI: one of the better values. A filling and tasty option. $36 I think (this is a fancy fine dining place so that's a bargain when other restaurants at this and other hotels have entrees $50-70). SALMON skewers: not huge but tasty for 2 of them. We might order more, but I had to review to counter the haters. One of our tastier and most beautiful meals! Definitely recommended. (PS: we also got the chicken and ribeye robatas. They're tapa style and not huge, but I'm told they're very tasty! Fam is like nom-nom).

This is the perfect date night spot. With a gorgeous patio and romantic ambience, this is a must try when you are in the area. The service was outstanding, and the food was equally amazing. I highly recommend the Tableside Grill as it gives you a taste of multiple items to sample and is very filling.

I haven't done a review in a while but I felt like one was due for this restaurant…read more I just want to say we have been to a lot of restaurants on the big island and some multiple times including the newly opened marlin bar. Consistency was key here and everything was on point. Service was excellent, food came out quick and hot, fresh and delicious. The prices were reasonable especially for the quality of food. We went to napua for the 2nd time and it was not as good. They raised their prices again so 62 for a plate of fish (mahi mahi with rice and green beans) and it was dry and lacking in flavor. Just for 3 of us it came to almost 200.00 you just pay for the ambience at that restaurant. We went to lava lava beach club and the prices went up and the food was terrible. Again your paying for the ambience their but there the pork was fatty, fish sandwich tasted like canned tuna and the pork sandwich idk it tasted like the smell of throw up. Ceviche was horrible and paid 30 dollars for a tiny tostada with some shrimp and fish that was super super fishy. This was the best place so far besides pono Hawaiian deli (poke spot best poke ever!!) or getting your own fish at the farmers market in Waimea I wanted to add this to highlight this particular restaurant. We ate here 4 times (3 dining and once to go) and all the times it was so good. We got the island waygu burger it was cooked perfect and seasoned well, we ordered the coconut shrimp this was delicious, we ordered fish and chips (lightly breaded not overly oily or fried it was light airy and crispy), we ordered the corn dip and this was surprisingly refreshing with their homemade chips, order the hot chicken sandwich and wow this was lightly panko breaded and it was not overly hot and spicy everything paired well with it, also got the regular waygu burger and it was again cooked perfect and exploded with flavor. Finally tonight came back on our last night and I ordered the kona kampachi, wow wow wow it was cooked to perfection (finally a restaurant that can cook fish correctly and not over cook it) the miso butter worked perfectly and the portion was huge!! And only for 36 dollars like com on. My wife got the mahi mahi fish tacos and that was delicious with the lime cream sauce. All the nights we went there never broke 100 dollars and that says something in Hawaii and it literally beats every other restaurant so far for the price, ambience and quality of food. Consistency was key please if you're reading this owner or chef of this restaurant please stay this consistent!! Thank you!!

We were sick all night and almost missed the wedding the next day. I called the next morning to give them all the details, where we sat, what we ordered, the date and time. Management handled this horribly. Avoid at all costs, could ruin your vacation.

Pro Tip: Enjoy a Luxury Resort Without Staying There…read more Here's a little Big Island travel hack... You don't have to be a guest at the five-star Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection to soak up its incredible atmosphere. Simply tell the valet you're dining at Surf Shack, enjoy a bite, a drink--or both--and they'll validate your parking. The complimentary valet alone feels like a win. The resort is consistently recognized as one of the Big Island's premier luxury destinations. Once you've eaten, take your time exploring the property. Stroll the beautifully landscaped grounds, relax in the open-air lounges, wander the shoreline, watch the waves roll in, browse the upscale shops, and enjoy one of the most peaceful resort settings on the Kohala Coast. The ambiance is worth the visit all by itself. As for Surf Shack, the setting is fantastic. The food? Good, but definitely priced with a luxury resort zip code. We enjoyed our meal, but you'll likely pay a premium for what you order. So here's the hack: Pay for lunch... get the resort experience for free. Between the validated valet parking, stunning grounds, oceanfront setting, and laid-back luxury vibe, it's one of the best values on the Big Island if you know the secret. Kabob was our main with hummus for the appetizers. We ended up not ordering enough for the main because I think when I'm sitting down you can't tell I'm 6'8" 220lbs and they advertise their meals as shareable. If you eat a lot, the kabobs aren't shareable. Pay attention at the desert layout; we decided to go with the unhealthy route which was to top off with some sweets instead of ordering more mains . The frozen milk cake for me was it even though they pushed the pavolova as the one. The smores is pretty average tasting s'mores but definitely a luxury version so I'd never say don't get it, I'd just say it's obtainable elseware if you're trying to decide on a space you might not visit again.
