We also had the volcano roll. Was moderately expensive but not excessive for an on-site restaurant at a resort. I am so torn writing this review because the staff and kitchen did an amazing job, but the restaurant has a severe fly infestation that made our dinner completely unenjoyable.To start with the positives, the food itself was fantastic. We ordered two rolls, chicken wings, and fried rice, and we genuinely loved every single dish. Our waitress was also incredibly kind, attentive, and doing the absolute best she could under the circumstances. When she noticed us struggling, she even brought out a fly fan to help clear our table.Unfortunately, the fan stood no chance. Even with it running, there were no fewer than 30 flies buzzing around our faces and landing near on and in our food the entire night. It felt less like a clean sushi restaurant and more like an outdoor picnic next to a dumpster. Dealing with that many pests while trying to enjoy raw fish is a major health concern and an absolute dealbreaker.It is such a shame because the team works hard and the food tastes great, but there is no way I would go back with a pest issue this severe. Management desperately needs to shut down for a day or two and call an exterminator to get this under control. read more

Beautiful patio looking out into Pauoa Bay. I had dinner here on their outdoor patio area with my husband and friends. The ambience was simply magical! Binchotan Bar & Grill is located in the Fairmont Orchid Hotel in the Mauna Lani Resort area. Their patio has a view the resort grounds and the bay. The patio and resort grounds were illuminated with gas torches and string lights. creating a relaxing tropical vacation vibe. Their menu featured a selection of small plates, entrées, sushi rolls, and their signature robatayaki. Their drink menu had their standard cocktails, non-alcoholic options, and a list of sakes to choose from. We started off with a sake flight which consisted of 3 types of sakes. We also ordered chicken karaage, edemame, and pork gyoza for appetizers. For main, we all went for the full traditional robotayaki grill experience. Appetizers came out first and piping hot. The personal robotayaki grill came out and the serving portions were huge. The robotayaki grills was heated with charcoal creating a distinctly smoky flavor. Each order came with a couple skewers of ribeye, chicken, prawns, mahi mahi, and mushroom. There were also a decent serving of asparagus. Service was excellent. Our server anticipated our needs and consistently checked in. Everyone in our party we would come back again for dinner. One side note about parking. There is both self park and valet. This restaurant is in the heart of one of the best resorts but it was so bad with two exceptions: complimentary macha bread was pretty good and the hot stone with Wagyu was terrific. Everything else was not. Big Island Roll (1/5), Puna Chicken Curry (3/5), and Sweet & Spicy Tteokbokki (0/5). The drinks were no better: Lychee Saketini (had to send it back). Everything we ordered are absolutely delicious!!! This is located inside the Fairmont hotel, can park at the hotel guest parking for free. No tickets needed. They do require reservations so make sure you call ahead of time to reserve. Highly recommend the traditional skewers!!! All skewers are super delicious!! The pork fried rice is also very good. My first impression was undesirable when the hostess told us it would be an hour wait for our party since we didn't have a reservation, despite there being plenty of open tables. I subsequently went on open table and made us a reservation within ten minutes...we went back a few minutes later and were seated right hot away. I don't know what was up with that, but that hostess must have felt silly. Ambiance: the outdoor seating section is beautiful at the Fairmont resort. The seating area is surrounded by tiki torches at night and the gardens of the resort. Service: our server was great at explaining the menu items, however she didn't check in on us very often. The staff was accommodating of my shellfish allergy, but brought out all the food at once. I would've preferred the courses to be spaced out a bit. Food: We orders the tiny crispy rice to start, which was very fresh. We got the Robatayaki traditional experience for two, which was fun and included two small skewers of each protein and vegetable over a grill. It came with some sauces and spices, but I had to ask for an explanation of those. It would've been helpful if they suggested what protein to pair each sauce with. The experience came with white rice, but we chose to upgrade to pork belly fried rice. The up charge for this was $25 and quite a bit more than we were expecting. It was very good though and a large bowl. The steak skewers were well done. My husband loved the shrimp skewers, which happen to be the one that I couldn't try. I think the mahi mahi was next best. Pricing was expensive for what you get, but you are at an oceanfront resort. read more

But what I got was filling, interesting, healthy and flavorful - in a really pretty setting at the Fairmont Orchid and with great service from Jayson and others. (Efficient & with aloha!!) My cocktail was $26 - but for that price it better be worth it. Highball with luxardo bianco, champagne & elderflower. YUM. ROOT VEGETABLE SALAD: HUGE & tasty and healthy for $16. A bargain EDAMAME: nothing special but it's what you expect. CRISPY TUNA app: YUM. I'm full between that and the root vegetable. Other things we got: ASPARAGUS ROBATA: delish and with a super sauce. WAYGU BEEF on the rock: yes, this is an expensive product. But it was a little small for $32. They liked it though. WAYGU SHORT RIB DONBURI: one of the better values. A filling and tasty option. $36 I think (this is a fancy fine dining place so that's a bargain when other restaurants at this and other hotels have entrees $50-70). SALMON skewers: not huge but tasty for 2 of them. We might order more, but I had to review to counter the haters. One of our tastier and most beautiful meals! Definitely recommended. Normally when someone says "group dinner," I start emotionally preparing for watered-down drinks, chaotic service, and someone crying in a bathroom. Not here. The mixed grill was sizzling perfection--so good I would have tackled someone at the table for the last skewer (thankfully, I didn't have to, but I was ready). And don't get me started on the cocktails--they weren't just drinks, they were moods. I ordered one that I'm pretty sure gave me a small spiritual awakening (thank you Naomi for the recommendation). The service? Impeccable. The servers were like hospitality ninjas--gliding in and out, refilling glasses, answering questions, keeping us all happy without ever breaking a sweat. It's hard to keep a large party running smoothly unless you're a cruise director or a kindergarten teacher with tenure, but they did it flawlessly. Now, I must give a special shoutout to the mango sorbet. Unlike a recent incident at another restaurant that shall remain unnamed (cough frozen sadness on a plate cough), this sorbet was the real deal--tropical, refreshing, and proof that the dessert course is not to be skipped. I left full, happy, and slightly wondering if I could just rent a cot and live behind the bar. The salad was overdressed and though the ingredients were fresh it tasted like a mouthful of seawater. The seafood experience came out like kebabs of shrimp, a lobster tail and 2 different fish. The lobster was over seasoned (a trend?) and it's not that the fish were and shrimp were bad, they just weren't anything. I couldn't wait to get the check, which took forever, because--surprisingly--the service was not top tier. Also the old fashioned tasted like pure sugar syrup, no craft. Do not recommend. read more

All were delicious, full of flavor and presented wonderfully. Pork belly fried rice came with an egg on top that we mixed in and it was the best we had on the island. Ramen was good but not great. The atmosphere was so serene..we sat outdoors, there was no house music blaring just the sound of the ocean, trees rustling in the breeze.... Our server, Pomai was super attentive. Answered our questions, made sure our glasses were always full, we were celebrating our anniversary and she made us feel celebrated ! We ordered the traditional grill - oh my word, it was so delicious, the meats were tender and flavorful. The fish was not dry and the shrimp was heavenly. The one order was enough for two to share, it came with one generous serving of white rice and a couple sauces and spices. As an appetizer we ordered the shrimp. It was perfectly salty sweet and the crunchy fried texture was delish! It had a creamy sweet sauce with sprinkles of green onion on top. The lychee saketini was a delight to the senses....the lychee puree was not overpowering and the sake was a beautiful addition. The cheesecake was made Japanese style- more bready than cheesey. I wasn't a huge fan of the texture but the presentation was beautiful. 10/10 recommend this place . We didn't take the kids but if you did there is a big open space of grass that is within eyesight of the restauraunt ;). read more

We were excited to dine here on our first night of vacation. The food was good but the service was lacking. Perhaps our server was new but she didn't really add much to the experience. We also found the menu descriptions a bit lacking where 2 of our party of 6 were surprised when their meals arrived. However, the biggest issue was with their timing; We received 5 of our drinks at the same time while the 6th came about 10 minutes later and with no explanation for the delay. Something similar happened with our entrees as well. The restaurant was very quiet with few other diners so the lackluster service was certainly surprising. For comparison, we also dined at another restaurant on the resort property, Brown's Beach House, and came away from that meal so impressed with the service and food. read more

Located in a beautiful Fairmont Orchid so our expectations were high. The sunset view was gorgeous as we walked in and the torch lighter was blowing the conch and lighting the torches. That was very cool. Our table for 6 was ready on their patio overlooking the gorgeous grounds. Unfortunately it started to rain shortly after being seated. Not one server came to help us move, and they were plenty. We got up and moved ourselves to a covered table. Had to ask for them to bring over our place settings. It was dark. Had to ask them to bring table lights. Noticed another table had to ask for lights as well. My Pimms Cup cocktail was underwhelming to say the least. At $20 something it was garnished with a huge chunk of lemon. The chopped fruit was missing. Isn't this the Fairmont? Mentioned it to the manager and she said? "Thanks, that's good to know." 2 diners enjoyed their miso mahi bowls, 2 diners ordered the sashimi plate for their dinner. It came all on one platter so we sent it back for them to separate. In their defense it is a sharing type of concept. The sashimi was delicious and we even ordered more. The final 2 diners shared the Binchotan grill. It was a fun presentation and yummy. Just be careful because if you leave your skewers on the charcoal too long they'll be overcooked. Overall the experience was meh. I don't think one server ever smiled. read more

We were unfortunately a little underwhelmed by Binchotan. We are staying at the Fairmont for our honeymoon, so we decided to go here for our first dinner while we're on vacation. The menu online looked great, and when we sat down, we loved the vibe-- the weather was great outside and the torches helped set the mood. We ordered the tuna crispy rice for an appetizer but replaced the spicy tuna with ahi tuna even though we were told that might make it take a little longer, but it was well worth it-- our appetizer was phenomenal, and I could've just ordered 2-3 of those and been set. However, we ordered ramen and sushi, and neither lived up to our expectations. The ramen didn't necessarily stand out from any other ramen I've had before, especially because the broth had little to no flavor. The sushi also had some unique twists, which sometimes I can get behind, but they definitely took away from the flavor of the actual fish in the sushi. We decided to get dessert to try to make up for it, but did not enjoy the matcha green tea cake (even though we were expecting to), as it was very bitter and rich. This was all paired with the fact that our server made themselves scarce the entire night, and we found ourselves frequently without water or waiting to order our next course for long stretches of time. While the ambiance and our appetizer were both great, we were kind of bummed that it went downhill after that. read more

If you can dine on the patio I encourage it, we really enjoyed the ambience of dining al fresco in Hawaii. The food was phenomenal too. The bento box is perfect tweens and teens while ramen noodles with broth on the side (special request which they will do) was perfect for our younger kid. My husband got the Robota experience was was delicious and I got a salad and karage.
