Celebrated a milestone anniversary here a few nights ago at Brown's Beach House at the Fairmont Orchid with my husband and two kids while staying in Waikoloa (at another resort, shhhhh!). It was EXCELLENT all around! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could! We were seated near the edge because we had made a reservation to time with the sunset. The ambiance was perfect, especially with the live music. Our servers, Cyrus and Rhey, were top notch! They really went out of their way to make sure we were well taken care of. We were served complimentary ube dinner rolls which were unusual and so ono (Hawaiian for delicious!). The onion/honey butter was the perfect accompaniment spread for the rolls. Rhey even got us a copy of the recipe since we couldn't stop raving about the rolls! My husband and son had the filet mignon and really enjoyed it. My daughter had the mahi mahi and ate every bite - which is saying a lot for my picky eater! I had the rib eye which was definitely a splurge but oh-so-worth-it. It was fun to have the blow torch melt the herbed butter! We also added a couple of sides: lobster fried rice (yum!) and broccolini (also good but not super special - however it was good to get some greens!). Our food was served and then it was time for the sunset so we ran to get pictures and our servers readily accommodated our requests to take our photos. I wish I had requested the food to be served AFTER the sunset but didn't think about it at the time. Fortunately everything was still delicious even if it wasn't piping hot by the time we sat down to finish it. After the amazing meal, we were treated to a complimentary "secret menu" item - a mud pie for dessert! We thought we were too full for dessert so declined ordering something off the menu, but somehow we all made room for this free mud pie! Yum! Highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion. They validate parking so don't forget to bring in your ticket to save $12! Although next time I might even consider staying at the hotel (Fairmont Orchid in Waikoloa on the Big Island) - it looked so elegant! read more

We really wanted to have a great experience at Brown's Beach House. We stay at Fairmont properties whenever we can, so we had high expectations for a restaurant at the Fairmont Orchid. Unfortunately, the experience felt a little short of what we normally expect from a Fairmont. There were definitely some highlights. The warm ube dinner rolls with butter and local honey were delicious. The octopus was also really good, although we wished there was more of it. The scallops were cooked and beautifully charred, but unfortunately were a little too salty. The Poisson Cru was where we were most disappointed. Being part Tahitian and having spent time in Tahiti, Mo'orea, and Bora Bora, we know what Poisson Cru should taste like. This version was far too cooked and was missing the bright citrus and fresh flavor that makes the dish so special. The addition of sweet potato chips also felt unnecessary and distracted from the dish. The Mahi Mahi was another disappointment. It was overcooked and, especially at this price point of $75, just felt mediocre. We were honestly surprised because this is a dish that should be a standout at a restaurant in Hawai'i. Our server, Bruce, was friendly and pleasant. While there were some opportunities for a higher level of service, we also understand that service can vary from night to night. One of the highlights of the evening was Rommel, who was helping with water and bussing. He was very attentive, efficient, and genuinely showed Aloha. He noticed the little things, checked on us regularly, and even brought us extra ube rolls to take home. We appreciated the extra effort and ended up tipping him separately. He was a great part of our experience. The ambiance is quiet and beautiful, which can be nice for a relaxed dinner, although the music felt a little too slow and subdued for us. We also had an unusual issue with the landscaping. Many small palm fronds kept falling onto our table and into our food, and there were quite a few little bugs flying around our faces and food throughout dinner. Not exactly what you expect from a high-end beachfront dining experience. We also learned that the restaurant stopped offering the Kamaʻāina discount about three months ago. Bruce did offer to comp the Poisson Cru, which we appreciated and thought was a nice gesture. Overall, Brown's Beach House has a beautiful setting and some genuinely good elements, but the food and overall experience did not quite hit the level we expected from a Fairmont property. We would come back for the sunset and the setting, and hopefully have a stronger dining experience next time. And if you're there, say hello to Rommel. He brought some genuine Aloha to our evening, and that stood out. read more

We stayed at the beautiful Fairmont Orchid Resort and we had no plans on our first night there so we decided to visit the resort's best restaurant for a late dinner. The guests were all slowly trickling out of the restaurant. We were seats quickly to a table near the beach. The Ambiance was beautiful especially with live music. The view would've been better during the sunset but we couldn't get a reservation so we watched the sunset near the pool area earlier. Reserve early if you want a sunset view from this restaurant. The bread that came with the dinner is a dark Ube dinner roll. I loved dinner rolls and there are Ube paste in the middle. It was delicious and unique. For dinner, I ordered the Coconut Red Curry Lobster Bisque, the 16oz ribeye, and a crab fried rice. For the Ribeye, I always get medium rare but I want my wife to try some too so I was thinking I should give in and get medium. Our server did us a solid and asked the chef to chopped the ribeye in half so we get half medium rare and half medium. The service staff sure went above and beyond to provide the best dinner experience possible. The Curry Lobster Bisque was very unique. I loved the soup because I want to try new things. My daughter and wife didn't like it as much though, probably because they don't like the Thai curry flavor. They prefer Japanese Curry normally. The Ribeye was well cooked and they have a chunk of herb butter on top. The server came by with a blow torch to help melt the butter. The presentation was great. However, the entire time I was thinking to myself "please don't over cook my steak with that torch..." haha. They even give me a huge bowie knife size steak knife to cut. The entire dinner experience was fantastic. If anyone is staying at the Fairmont Orchid, I highly recommend to stop by for a meal. read more

Three of us went here for dinner on a Monday evening while vacationing on the big island. We were seated right on time and had a very nice table with an excellent view of the sunset. Our service was very good and attentive, but not pushy and we never lacked for anything during our meal. Our two martinis and glass of wine were delivered in a reasonable time. The martinis were delicious although the pour was on the short side for both. The wine temperature was a little too warm and could've tasted much better at less than room temperature. It was a very pleasant evening and with the live instrumental music and beautiful sunset it was all around outstanding ambiance. The complementary purple Beet rolls were delicious. We ordered the Baby Beet and Barata cheese salad. We thought it was one of the tastiest salads we've had. We also got the Mahi Mahi entree and their signature dish, Ti Leaf wrapped Kanpachi with an added side of Lobster Fried Rice. Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. Browns Beach House is a very nice place to go for a special meal during sunset on the Kahala coast. When we were leaving after our meal, there was not an empty table available. read more

The view from this location is amazing. Try to get a table for sunset. The restaurant is located out by the beach. It was quite a journey through the hotel getting here, but it's worth it. The staff was very nice. We met quite a few of them throughout the night. The chef gave us a great taste of something he's trying. It's all plant based and it was delicious. It had a lot of different flavors so it kept you guessing on what to expect. My husband and I started with the lobster bisque. It was a great melding of East and West flavors. The bisque was mixed with a bit of coconut milk to give it it's creaminess. For main dishes we got the Kampachi, the macadamia crusted mahi mahi, and the filet. I thought the mahi mahi was great. The restaurant kept it simple and let the fish shine. My daughter loved her filet and the kampachi was great too. The presentation on the kampachi was really nice. For dessert we got the snickers bar. It was a great recreation of the actual candy bar. It was nice, light, and a great way to end the night. Brown's Beach house is located within the Fairmont Orchid hotel resort. I would recommend booking at least a day in advance because slots fill up quickly. They do take walk-up reservations, but the wait is usually a couple of hours. If you're dining for a special occasion, you can note it on your reservation. I would recommend choosing a time window around sunset because the sky is very beautiful and definitely romantic! Our spectacular server was Bruce. He was super kind and helpful--checking in on us often throughout dinner & dessert. You can check out my photos for what we ordered. Everything was absolutely incredible - we'd order every item again. I did, however, forget to take a picture of the Ube rolls (first round complimentary). They were so unique and had great textures. I wish I could make these at home! For dessert, I thought the tiramisu was a little dry, but my husband enjoyed the whole thing. Their version of the Snickers bar was totally delicious, even better than the actual candy bar) and complimentary (since we were celebrating our anniversary - how sweet!) Our first time dining here and it won't be the last. The food was excellent (especially the ube dinner rolls and the lobster bisque), the ambiance beautiful, having a gorgeous view of the ocean. There was a singer with guitar who was performing out on the grass and he was a fabulous musician. Quiet, relaxing Hawaiian music made the night so special. Our server was great, explaining the menu items with knowledge and ease. My only criticism would be the hostess who greeted us. She obviously did not check the menus she put in front of us, as one of the menus was missing an entire page. That should not happen at a high end restaurant like this. Fortunately our waiter was quick to procure another. Then later in the evening I went to ask her where the restrooms were, and her attitude was very condescending. I have no idea why. Best restaurant experience we could've hoped for. Tremaine and staff served our table, family of 13 and we were given the royal treatment. Sun was blocking our eyes and Tremaine brought out an umbrella. Then one of our kids was feeling sluggish and he made a makeshift bed out of chairs. Who does that? He and the other waiters who helped us did such an excellent job making sure we had the perfect birthday celebration and last night on the island. They even took our family photos closer to the beach. I don't think we ever had service like that before. Above and beyond all expectations! read more

To start off we were seated at the outer edge of the restaurant near the water and we were able to see the sunset - ambiance was off the roof. The food selection were great from the vegetarian (Kalo Fondant), to the Mahi mahi to the filet mignon. Let's not forget about the "Ube" rolls. I wasn't able to get into this restaurant for a reservation so I did the next best thing- I ordered takeout. Everyone was so nice and I love that the hostess was able to give me some great recommendations for what to eat. So the Ube bread... Just get it. It comes free if you order something off the menu, which is amazing. The Ube bread with the honey butter was just mouthwatering goodness. I ended up also getting the lobster pasta and then I was persuaded heavily to get the Snickers bar dessert. The pasta was amazing and just the right portion size. But that snicker dessert... That's the thing that I would come back for over and over again along with the Ube bread. Both are extremely amazing and something that you can't find in most places. For takeout, my food was relatively fresh. Granted, I picked it up and immediately took it back to my room and gobbled it down, but everything was still a great texture and nice and warm. Definitely recommend this place. It is on the price your side so you're definitely going to pay a lot, but it's a great ambience and the food is pretty good as well. read more

The drinks are fine and the complimentary ube bread with honey butter is terrific. We tried four different mains: Ti Leaf Wrapped Kanpachi (ok), Kona Prawns (overcooked), Mahi Mahi (best of what we tried), and Special Ono (not great). We ordered the following: Daily cosmopolitan which was guava flavored 1 glass Prosecco Poisson Cru Octopus Ribeye with side of lobster rice Lobster agnolotti I did see a lot of comments on portion size and I tend to agree. The agnolotti was very small for $65. The octopus was one small tentacle for $32 - I would have expected at least two. While the food was good, I don't think it was great. We fell in love with poisson cru on our trip to French Polynesia and what was served at Browns just didn't compare. Despite being small the agnolotti was tasty and wish there was more. My husband's rib eye was was also cooked nicely and tasted great. Brown's could be a 5 rating with some improvements. read more

What a superb experience for our wedding anniversary! If you have a big event to celebrate while in this area of the Big Island, please consider Brown's. It was a small hike to get out to this restaurant from the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel, but it was worth it to be on the beach for the amazing sunset. I shared about our anniversary online when making the reservation, and they gave us the best table in the place-IMO, so close to the beach and only a few tables in this section. We both got fish--he got Mahi Mahi, I got Ono. Both excellent but i liked his macadamia crusted Mahi the best. And the lobster fried rice had a great smokey flavor that sets it apart from your everyday Hawaiian side dish. Excellent presentation of food from the purple sweet potato bread, to the salad, the entrees, and the desserts. Try the tiramisu and the snickers dessert. Service was wonderful! There was even a sunset ritual performed with a horn! And the sun setting was the perfect backdrop (6 pm reservations in July is perfect timing). We had a magical time and will be back! read more

My husband and I came to the big island for our 5 year wedding anniversary. We knew we wanted a beautiful view and relaxed atmosphere for our celebration dinner and a friend at home recommended Browns Beach House. When we sat down I wanted to cry it was so beautiful (lol). We had the absolute BEST meal and service of our lives. Our waiter Tramaine made us feel as if we were his only table. He was friendly (down to earth), gave a great presentation on the menu and some recomendations based on what we liked/didn't like. He even took our photo TWICE once before sunset and once at sunset. We left dinner already talking about coming back and even decided we'd stay at the Fairmont (the restaurant is on their property) just so we can eat there again. Highly recommended! read more

Pros: sitting outside is divine. It is one of the most beautiful places anywhere to eat outside. Servers were pleasant Cons: food is average in taste and extremely expensive for what you get. $70 for a small piece of fishy-tasting Mahi Mahi. $16 for about 50 cents worth of broccolini. A glass of beer is fairly priced, but the prices of the other drinks are ridiculous. Etc. If you don't mind spending the money and don't expect too much, it will be okay. read more

There was a great musician playing, and being seated outside near the ocean made it feel romantic. We loved all of our food, and received a complimentary dessert-- no idea what it actually was, but it was very tasty. Our waitress, Summer, was super fun and we really enjoyed talking with her. The food was just okay and over priced, but the view was nice. We reminded them of the allergens but they still didn't tell us the poke had nuts. Luckily they brought the nuts and all other ingredients on the side and assembled it at the table. Overall, for the price point, the food was mediocre. I've been to restaurants where the food was half the cost, but tastier. I guess you are paying for the view and live music. For example, the depth of flavor of the ciopino wasn't great. It was a bit too acidic. The bread just tasted like sourdough, and didn't have enough furikake. The ube bread basket was good but not the best ube bread I've had. I like the real chunks of ube, and the sea salt. The scallops were okay. Poke was just okay. Cookie Monster from the kid's meal for $10 was reasonable with two cookies, a slice of ice cream, and chocolate and caramel bits, and a strawberry tongue. read more

Because I did not plan ahead as much as usual, the earliest reservation I could get was 6pm on a Sunday. We were thee for sunset but in the middle of our appetizer so we did not get another photo like we usually do. And we were in the middle of the tables instead of on the seaside edge. There is a new menu, "Brown's Experience" which is prix fixe. It's $110 for an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Add wine pairings for $65. We both got the scallop appetizer and the filet mignon. The other entree choice was the crusted kampachi. The scallop appetizer was good, although we each got two regular sized scallops instead of one large one. They were perfectly seared and nicely plated with sauce nd vegetables. Care had been taken with the sauce so as not to ruin the sear. I really liked this! The filet mignon is always tricky with me because I like it VERY rare. I emphasize this when ordering, asking for black and blue, saying moo. But the first one came out medium. The plating is dramatic with one huge onion ring, but I sent it back before I could snap a shot. The chef came out to do a routine check and was surprised to see that I no longer had my steak! He went back to oversee the refire but it came out probably by the time he got back to the kitchen. The second try was perfect, although the plating was a little sloppy. Scrumptious, everything a filet should be. The grilled broccolini was a little bitter. The potatoes were perfection, creamy and subtly flavored with truffle I think. Hubby cleaned his plate. The dessert snickers was good, chocolate with nougat and Mac nuts. Some nice crispies and some fruity filling. I really liked the port that was paired. Service was prompt and attentive. The returned steak was handled very promptly. She also let me try the paired wines before pouring the glass and offered substitutions if anything was not to my taste. 6 oz. pours. The maitre d' came out to check on us after dessert, just before the check was delivered. Our bill included a full, extra $110 meal! I called him back and he handled promptly including comp'ing a pre-dinner wine. The waitress rushed over and I asked if she had checked our bill but the Maitre was already taking the tray to fix it. We have been here enough times, that I give the benefit of the doubt, but check your bill for any extra dishes or drinks just in case! Great food and service. Not perfection, but worth the 45 minute drive from Kailua. Note: I noticed people were dressed mostly very casually. Probably those were hotel guests who didn't want to change, but for food this good I like to live a little and dress up a bit. read more

The ube bread was so good with the butter we ordered another basket and took most to go. I had the Brown Experience which was 3 course dinner for $110. The first course was the crispy pork belly and my daughter couldn't get enough. The second was the filet mignon. It was the best filet mignon I've ever had. And then topped with dessert. The 2024 winner for best dessert at Big Island Chocolate Festival the Kona Cold Pressed Coffee Brûlée. My daughter had the Wagyu Skirt Steak and the wife had the Mahi Mahi. We all exchanged bites and everything was delicious. We had a beautiful view of the sunset with the palm trees, ocean, and beach. Every table has a beautiful view of the ocean and they have live music by local talent that adds a nice touch to your dining experience. Here is what my wife and I had during this visit on 12/9/24: Cocktails: White Orchid Cosmo - From the Signature Cocktail List Classic Vodka Martini - From the Martini List Appetizer: Kekela Farms Salad Ube Rolls with Orchid Honey Butter - no charge for the first order. Wine: Glass of Stags Leap Cab Glass of Villa Maria Sav Blanc Entree: Filet Mignon Spanish Octopus - this is on the appetizer list. The Ube Rolls are famous here and so delicious. The Kekela Farms Salad is made with fresh local ingredients and is great for sharing. The filet mignon is sourced locally from the island and was cooked perfectly. The wine by the glass prices are very fair. Dinner for two with a cocktail and a glass of wine is going to run you about $250. Add Brown's to your list on your next visit to Hawaii! read more
