The stuff is really nice. The machine seemed to malfunction a lot. And if you go on Friday or Sunday be prepared to wait forever.

This review is a six-of-one / half-dozen-of-the-other kind of review. Buckle in, dear reader. I originally tried starting my donation journey at Grifols, but they got hung up on my allergy diagnoses and required my allergist to sign off first (what allergies have to do with plasma is beyond me). The catch? An MD had to sign off. My allergist is a PA. So it became a months-long nightmare trying to get paperwork signed by a doctor I'd never even seen. I eventually gave up and went to Octapharma instead, where my allergies weren't an issue, and donated there twice a week throughout 2025. Other than quickly working my way up to $70 per donation, I absolutely hated Octapharma (you can find my review if curious). When I got deferred there in December for low protein and their re-testing process dragged on for WEEKS, that's when I finally returned to Grifols. I wanted to donate here in the first place because the facility is spotless, never looks terribly busy, parking is easy, and at the time they quoted me $125 for the first two donations and $75 each thereafter. Good deal, right? Welp...cue record scratch. The positives: 1. Very clean location 2. Minimal wait times (usually in and out within 90 minutes to 2 hours) 3. The staff are genuinely kind, respectful, efficient and seem happy to work there 4. Parking is NEVER an issue Unfortunately, that's where it ends. The pay structure is $40 for the first donation in a 7-day period and $70 for the second (so, someone either lied to me upon first visit, or they changed the structure I was originally quoted). So, I'm already making less than I did at Octapharma while driving farther. Initially, the better experience and time savings more than made up for it. Unfortunately, the payment system feels DESIGNED to keep donors from receiving that $70 payment consistently. I've now been deferred THREE TIMES in THREE MONTHS here for "low protein," and "low iron," which honestly makes no sense. I now eat dramatically more protein than I did when Octapharma deferred me once after nearly a full year of donating while actively dieting and under-eating (the latter is my fault, admittedly). But since coming to Grifols, I eat 30-50g of protein per meal plus snacks between meals, consistently. I have spinach salads (paired with Vitamin C for better solubility) and other iron-rich foods at least four times a week. I work with a nutritionist. Something's fishy. When you're deferred, your next donation resets to $40, then you have to work your way back to $70 again. Frankly, that's bull. They also interpret the FDA donation rules in a way that makes scheduling unnecessarily restrictive. FDA rules allow two donations in a 7-day period with 48 hours between donations. Most people would assume that means you could flex your schedule a little week to week. Not here. Grifols treats each donation as starting a brand-new 7-day cycle, effectively locking you into the exact same two donation days every week (which is NOT the FDA requirement). If life happens and you miss one, it disrupts the whole payment cycle and will cost you the higher payment. If every donation paid the same rate, like at Octapharma, this wouldn't even matter. But when the compensation changes based on scheduling technicalities and misinterpreted federal regulations, it ABSOLUTELY matters. Lastly, this location randomly closes whenever they're short-staffed or don't have an RN on site, which seems to happen often. So if your locked-in donation day happens to be one of those closure days, you're effed. Recently they also decided Mondays now close at 2pm, periodt. Great news for everyone locked into Monday donations (it me). IT'S ALMOST LIKE THE SYSTEM IS INTENTIONALLY STRUCTURED TO MAXIMIZE CORPORATE PROFIT WHILE EXPLOITING THE DESPERATION OF THEIR CLIENTELE. Hmmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser. Heartbreaking, because I truly LIKE the staff here (shout outs to Rachel, Hannah and Liam especially). I like the facility. I like how much faster and calmer the experience is overall. But I can't continue dealing with the constant payment resets and scheduling traps. My donation money goes toward my car payment, and while I'm fortunate enough not to rely on it for rent or groceries (currently ), missing that $70 repeatedly is still absolutely crippling. Let's face it, selling plasma is already something people do out of financial necessity. It's unconscionable that ANYONE in this country should have to sell their body fluids to make ends meet, and yet here we are. The least Grifols Biomat could do is make sure the process isn't purposely engineered to make the vulnerable jump through hoops just to receive the promised compensation. Recipients need our plasma to survive, but donors need the compensation to survive, too. read more

Been donating for nearly 10 years, 3 different centers. This is the worst one in the valley by far. I would rather tack on an additional 15 of driving to another center than sit in the lobby for over an hour every single time I donate. If you want to blow 4-5 hours of your day no matter what time you go, then this is the place. Just go to the other one, you will save yourself more time in the long run read more

My friend and I came in yesterday, we got there at 12:48 PM took about FIVE HOURS for "NEW DONORS" supposedly... my friend got denied bc of her iron level was too high by 2% and I got denied bc I didn't read the questions correctly bc I missed -23 they red flagged me bc I didn't take it too seriously... that's what the nurse told me!!!! It took use half a day our gas, energy and time all FOR NOTHING YESTERDAY IT WAS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME. NEVER AGAIN, IF I COULD GIVE THEM ZERO STARS; I WOULD!!!!!!!!!!! I never experienced so much mis management and a toxic work environment except at the Grifols Plasma Center in Van Nuys (Vanowen/White Oak). I have been a regular donor at the Grifols plasma center in Van Nuys for over a year and donate specifically to help patients in need, including those requiring rabies treatment. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was extremely disorganized and concerning. I was in the center for nearly five hours due to staffing shortages, poor communication, and a lack of clear workflow. Several employees privately approached me during the visit and encouraged me to submit feedback, expressing their own frustration with the situation. I understand plasma donation can take time, but this level of inefficiency is not reasonable for donors or staff. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and makes operational improvements, because donors' time and employees' working conditions both matter. read more

What is the point of having appointment times if it takes almost 4 hours from check in to finish donating? I had an appointment at 10, took almost 2 hours just to find me a bed and then another 45 minutes on sitting to get someone to help. I have always loved how Van Nuys was on top of their stuff and the last few times, long wait times, staff that seems overwhelmed and understaffed. Very disappointing read more

For the first two months, I had no issues donating here. Everything ran smoothly and I was generally satisfied. However, once the new year started, the problems began. Since January, this center has been closing on days I was already scheduled to donate, wait times have increased to 3+ hours, and on two separate occasions my appointment was canceled due to lack of staff when I was supposed to receive $70. Most recently, on January 22nd, I arrived at 6:30 PM. At 7:30 PM, someone finally came out to inform us that they would not be taking any additional donors. We were told we could go to another center yet that location also closes at 7:30 PM, making the suggestion completely unrealistic. At that point, why even suggest another center? I completely understand that staffing shortages happen, and I'm empathetic to that. What's frustrating and unacceptable is the lack of communication with donors. Had we been notified earlier, many of us wouldn't have wasted hours waiting or rearranged our schedules for nothing. Donors are losing time, money, and opportunities due to poor communication and mismanagement. The lack of transparency and accountability is disappointing. If donors are being negatively impacted by repeated cancellations and closures, there should be some form of compensation or acknowledgment of that loss. I hope management addresses these issues, because this center has potential but the current experience is unreliable and frustrating. read more

The staff is relatively nice and try to be gentle when doing the actual plasma extraction, but holy cow, the wait time is insane. They have almost no staff available to help, and it seems like every other week the place is shut down due to being understaffed. Definitely not worth it, especially for what they compensate. Used to be in and out, never had any issues since transferring from the one on Tampa and Vanowen. The last couple months, it's been DOWNHILL. Always understaffed. Even when understaffed, some particular workers think it's social hour. It's pretty annoying. Please hire more, please discipline the workers who aren't WORKING and just chatting and sitting around. I feel like I have to glare at them and raise my hand to get their attention. I want to transfer out back to the other one at this point. What a disappointment this place was! I was a new donor and had an appointment for my first donation. When I arrived (after driving 45 minutes), the very frustrated attendant said "No, sorry we can't take you because we're too short staffed." I explained I left work early and drove for 45 minutes to get here and I have an appointment. She said "I don't care. We're too short staffed. I don't like it either. Go to another location and see if they'll take you." What the heck?!?! How unprofessional! I will never return to this location but highly recommend the Reseda location where the attendants are so nice, professional, composed, and helpful. Don't waste your time here and if you do, call before you go so you can make sure they don't refuse you at the door. read more

I understand that beggars can't be choosers, and that's exactly how it feels at this Grifols location. No matter the day or time, the process moves at a glacial pace. I've tried coming at different hours in hopes of a quicker experience, but it's always a 1.5 to 3-hour ordeal. The most frustrating part is that while donors wait for a bed or to be disconnected, the staff seem to have plenty of time for jokes and socializing. That said, my only real complaint is the wait time... the staff is friendly, and the facility is clean. Just be sure to set aside at least 2.5 hours before coming in. read more

I have to take my 5 star review back..I've been donating for grifols since 2017 ..they know me for face value at both Lancaster and van nuys locations all of a sudden I have no records of my eczema and im on hold for the past 2 months I came back into today and still no records and they will not let me donate nuys from scaring not okay at all !! Terrible staffing!!! On now more than 1 occasion I have walked in to find no screeners to start the process. Staffing/scheduling continue to be an issue. These are simple matters to fix yet they continue. I would look towards management for the continuing service problems. Somewhere in June of 2019 after having been a regular donor here starting in 2017, I was issued a bogus, gross, biased and pathetic "Mental Health Assessment" I was required (am still required) to fill out (questionnaire and format of said test bears only, like, 5 lines of information needed) said assessment before I am allowed to donate plasma here. Noting that Grifols isn't technically medically accredited in any way that can actually require a mental health criteria be demanded and met - (before and or after initial qualification screenings) out of the several lines of required information, one of them is the NEED for proof of my name on a LEASE AGREEMENT. Aside from this cringeworthy requirement, the stupid questionnaire also makes note of port-a-potties and contraction of HIV/AIDS - ironically, when under a biased review regarding one's "mental health", I find it difficult to find such a question (almost as simple as "yes, I've used a port-a-potty before" or "no, I have not") meaningful, certainly not necessary, and can hardly consider its "need" to be asked and answered, sane. Never mind the fact it has absolutely nothing to do with one's mental health - clearly they were desperate in their endeavor to format the ONE OF A KIND mental health assessment to appear urgent, unbiased, and at the very least, genuine. Tracing back to the lack of accredited medical "authority" or clearance to ask one who has already "passed" or met needed criteria to donate stupid plasma twice a week, to brandish any outside, confidential medical information - as far as I was familiar, only a piece of a mail with one's name from within 30-days, typically and preferably, like, a bill or even something linked to a government "account" of some sort would and always has been accepted. First at Tampa and Vanowen's Kedplasma, then here at Biomat, then again at Octapharma. I have searched online and inquired in person with numerous individuals/donors regarding the "mental health assessment" test I was given, but I can guarantee that I'm the only person who has ever been given this stupid mental health assessment. Didn't even actually defer me or anything - just made some stupid stuff up because a girl working there held eye contact with me, smiling sweetly for a noticeable amount of time. The timing of said events are too freaking noticeably close to be coincidental. She had her hand on a particular filing cabinet while maintaining the fixed/forced adorable smile and eye contact with me, and I swear to God they either relocated the same filing cabinet or altogether removed it from the building after this happened and I noticed it the next time I came in to donate. I'm not saying it's a positive situation because it kinda seems like some setup to justify that they go through peoples' phones or lie and say they're able to do so, then say they found this or that on a donor's phone for personal gossip - just know it's your male employee's B.S.ing as there isn't much of a way to do that unless mutual sharing between devices is set up. My car was stolen on May 30th, 2019 - and I could likely with reasonable suspicion, attribute its disappearance to these events as well. Since 2014, I would only ever frequent 2 places at one given time - my place of employment and whichever plasma donation center I was registered to at those given times. Following this dookie, I had gone in to one of the places of employment of my past to see if I could work there temporarily (or for however long before finding something more financially ideal) and the girl with the persistent/stuck smile was sitting at the front desk in the main office of the workplace - noting that I would only frequent my job place and plasma place, for her to be there was most certainly not a coincidence, either. It would pain me greatly to find that somebody lead her to believe they were in contact or communicating with me, playing messenger and relaying her words to me but lying about actually doing so - leading her to believe I intended on meeting up with her there when I was too shy to communicate with her; if she was under the impression that somebody was making plans, that individual would have caused her to end up feeling unnecessarily hurt or heartbroken or stood up - if anyone genuinely cared for her and thought she deserved "the best", any tidbit of negativity would have never happened. Hiring and placing freaking lookalikes where I worked would be a little too much when trying to make someone out to be a concerning person, like trying to lure me back to start an argument or something. And trying to make me look like a creep, I guess. I'm not mean or inconsiderate. I'm freaking nice as heck and this situation has honestly caused me so much unrepaired grief (boohoo) no matter how stupid it may seem - I lost freaking everything and my one lifeline left at the time seems to be the culprit of the domino effect. read more

Van Nuys has the most terrific crew...all being...kind, friendly, and efficient. Every single member of the, crew, all throughout, are truly...amazing. The place is clean, and safe. Even, the donors, are nice. Summer a bit busier, but they keep things, moving. read more

While it is helpful when in a bind, I would suggest another donation center. Out of respect I wont mention which I am referring to. This company is incredibly stringent on WHERE you can donate aka you pick one of their centers and you can never return to another one of their centers even if you move or youre banned forever, you cant go to another plasma center even months later or youre banned forever, the customer service is terrible when you call and they never pick up, the nurses are inferior and have bruised me many times, and on general they do not seem to care at all about the patients. We are human beings not blood bags. There is another company which is incredibly close that treats you like human with human circumstances. read more

Avoid this place. Not worth the drive. Came here in 2016. Filled out all of the paperwork and I was told I couldn't donate because I lived in England in the 1990's and there is a risk of mad cow disease. The only problem is that none of the that is true. At the time I tried to point out that they'd made a mistake, but I was told that it was too late to change it. Even though it was not my error. Fast forward to today, I was told that I have a life time ban at this company. This is all BS. The truth is that the person who did my intake assumed that I was gay, and basically found a way to stop me from donating. F this place. Disgusting that a company can do that to someone based on an assumption. As if I don't remember my own life and where I grew up. Shame on you. It's not worth the time at all. The first time I went I figured it would be a long process and it was, but was told that subsequent visits with an appointment would be streamlined and quick. Here I sit, 2 hours and 10 mins after my appointment time and I still haven't even started the donation process yet. The lab techs ignore what order people came in, are generally rude, and don't mind wasting your time. Plus, for a facility that handles people's bodily fluids it's dirty. The bathroom had blood on the floor and employees in the back don't bother to make the trash can. It's not worth the money, they don't respect the donors, and I won't be back. read more

Currently the phelobotomist team is understaffed. I had an appt Thurs and got a call in the morning that I needed to reschedule. Moved appt to Friday and by the time I left there was a huge backup in the backroom waiting area (6 seated and 6 people milling around). That screwed up my 2 donations within 7 days windowing, and they are closed on Xmas Day (understandably). I heard they have 2 phelobotomists in training but it takes 2 months to train them. What gets me is that the site reminds donors that donating plasma is a "critical infrastructure service" but the first visit is only compensated at $30? If every visit was at least $50 that would make it more worth risking our lives during COVID. Cancelled the balance of my appointments for the month and will wait 2 months until they have their staffing under control. Too bad, as I was looking forward to the $200 7th visit bonus. I'm actually a confused by the low rating. I've had good experiences there after 6 months of donating. The Octapharma a few miles away has a higher score for some reason and it was loud and completely crowded. I left and went back to grifols. I've been going to grifols for a while and it's pretty easy. They pay more than the Octapharma by about 40 or 50 a week. I feel like the only people who are going to have a bad time are the weirdos. But I've only seen a few of those. One guy was moving around while the lady was trying to insert the needle. If you can donate, I highly recommended. I wish I had been doing this for years, it's enough to pay a car payment and insurance it was a little left over. read more

Normally it would be extremely busy but right now it's slow and it's by appointment only. Walk ins can come but expect to wait 3 hours for paperwork and physical exam and it takes about 45 mins to donate plasma. Everyone from the front office to the back office was extremely helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Thank you Hope and Kim. Seriously everyone who helped me today thank you. I have been coming here for 2+ years and everyone is always nice and professional. Yes, sometimes they get backed up. Yes, sometimes they are understaffed and don't answer the phone. And yes once in almost 200 visits one employee did not handle a situation well ( I never saw that employee again btw ) so all in all I don't know why there are any bad reviews here. Dani moves about with the efficiency of a well oiled machine which I often see in veterans (maybe she is one?) One young lady who's name escapes me, manages to insert the needle with such ease I feel nothing more than a flick of air across my skin and lately they are answering the phone if you call right back after getting the machine. Okay so I just took time out here to read a bad review or two and see they are because they got turned down and can't donate for whatever reason. I asked them if it's OK for me to come ....Because I haven't been there for 5 years .....They said it's OK come in as a new donor....and I did .. I waited 1 hour 30 minutes...then they called my name ...the young gentleman told me I couldn't donate because I had low protein from 5 years ago ... I told him that was years ago ....I asked to speak to managers and no 1 came out ...I started thinking they were Racist!!!! This place needs to get their shit together. They used to be great last year but there have been some changes this year and it's gone downhill. Firstly, they stopped giving the weekly bonuses like they used to so the fees they pay donors are considerably lower now. Secondly, they are extremely understaffed so the wait times are ridiculous now. I was there over 2 hours the last time and I'm a return donor not new. Lastly, it's obvious that this company doesn't care about their donors and they only care about getting your plasma so they can make their multi millions. I can't donate now for 56 days because of a faulty tubing leak that dripped less than 1/4 cup of blood on the floor during a return. No discussion- they said I signed documents. read more

Don't go here.. You have better luck at HemaCare or Octaplasma. This place is ALWAYS BEHIND TWO+ HOURS and too many of the staff members purposely make you wait. It's the weirdest environment, it's as if they have no power outside of work so the moment they have control they take advantage. I hate checking in with Iderra, she gives off the most negative vibes and doesn't fully comprehend anything you tell her. She makes situations much worse for no reason. There's been blood on a couple of the seats that they've had me head to so definitely check that they've cleaned it. read more
