They have pretty good ice creams that are made here and from scratch. They are Mexican style Nieves, that can be made in milk(for a creamy taste) or ice(for my lactose intolerant sister) lol we both can get a yummy treat here after we eat next door. They have all my childhood favorites here! I remember always getting hot cheetos and cheese and nachos from the neighborhood ice cream truck when I was younger. Ice cream trucks are a bit scarce now a days so im glad theres a place i can go to that has all these things. Their bionicos is the best!! Just the perfect amount of crema and fruits. The store smells really good too..i dont usually take notice of how a store smells but it smelled like a mixture of fresh fruits and creme. Was craving a chamango and found this on yelp close to my house. One of the few old stories on a Fig that's quickly changing. They offer an assortment of snacks, ice creams, sorbets, and smoothies. The two times I've been there so far, there is a lovely couple working. The chief always greets me and quickly prepares whatever I order. Although parking on Fig is becoming more difficult to find, I will continue coming here for a while. read more

Disappointed after hearing great things. Drove 15 minutes out of my way to get a mangoneada but unfortunately it was definitely not worth it. When you pay $5.25 (they charge .75 cents for tamarindo candy) you expect it to be very good and not store bought sorbet and chamoy. Not traditional homemade chamoy (with real chili peppers and spices) but flavorless artificial chamoy with bad ingredients. Needless to say I won't be going back. Especially when Garcia's Fruits in El Monte is a hundred times better and will be worth the longer drive. Nothing compares to their homemade fresh ice cream and chamoy. read more

Been wanting to try a bionico and happen to be in the neighborhood. They were delicious! Fresa y crema: Fruit was fresh cut, crema paired perfectly and the topping of granola, coconut and raisins were just right. Hubby got the #1 which was assorted fruit (nectarine, melons, strawberries, bananas) were all ripe to perfection. Same toppings as the fresa y crema. This is my first time coming here , my daughter ordered fresas con crema , which she liked , she mentioned that the cream was a bit thick as she is used to eating it more watery , but she liked it..I ordered strawberry ice cream but it was the water one onctead of the milk one and did not like it . I ordered one scoop of coconut ice cream and one scoop of strawberry icream the milk kind. Horrible service. Ive been here twice before everything seemed good. Last time I went took my sister because I was craving a diablito. We walked in the lady working there was helping another couple, she did not acknowledge us at all. We should have walked out but decided to stay. We got our diablitos (no tamarindo stick included, costs extra to add) for those familiar w diablitos know these are needed for it to be complete. For the price they are charging for small cup in my opinion should be included. I ordered tejuino bc my parents are from Nayarit and are familiar with that drink. Gave it to them and they said "this is not tejuino" it was so pricey. I was going to take it back but was almost certain the lady and man working would have not given us our money back. I had a banana split all to my self ... No i didn't finish it! It's way to much ice cream for one person. Anyways, my chosen ice cream flavors were Vanilla,Rocky Road and Pistachio. Everything was good, except I kept finding frozen little ice cubes in my pistachio and then behold, I bit into a "pebble" / what I though was a super hard pistachio but since I couldn't bite into it I put the "pebble" down on the table. My dad closer examined it and said it was a ROCK. He right away showed it to the worker in which she dismissed it and said it was Thriftys fault. ( that's where they get there product from) I mean, I wasn't going to make a big deal out of it OR report and make a claim but common.. At least show some proof of care towards your customers. i.e. "Are you ok?, Is there anything we can do? WOULD YOU LIKE SOME 'ON THE HOUSE' ICE CREAM?" HANDS DOWN THE BEST (& CHEAPEST) PLACE TO GET BIONICOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D I've tried a couple of other places and thought those were really good, but I realized, if you haven't tried La Palapa, then you haven't tasted REAL bionicos! A typical bionicos (Mex-style fruit salad) consists usually of bananas, apples, strawberries, coconut shavings, granola, raisins, and homemade creme. When I went to La Palma, I requested mango, watermelon, extra creme to be added.. and they didn't charge me extra for any of it! Some say the wait is long, but you honestly can't complain because the owner is carefully making your fresh order,actually juicing, cutting, or blending your choice of fruits/veggies, and is making such a large portion, worth more than what you paid for it. I got a medium-sized bionicos for $4.50 and to my delight, saw that it was twice as large than other "medium-sizes" at other Mexican fruit-stand places. Basically, it was equivalent to an EXTRA-LARGE size, (if that size even existed) at other bionicos places. It was as big as the take-out styrofoam box that they give you for an entree at Chinese Restaurant. Compared to the other establishments that I go to get bionicos, La Palapa charges $2+ LESS and offers 50%+ MORE fruit/veg and with a better taste. & Don't even get me started on their homemade creme. Wow. Not too sweet. It's thick, creamy, and has a hint of tart. YUM. So stop reading this review and go get some now! It's that good! :D read more

The bionico (I got a customized one with pineapple, banana, strawberries and mango) was satisfying and not too sweet. The fruit was ripe and fresh and the crema dulce was just the right touch of thickness and sweetness. My gripe with this place is that the lady charged me the non-HP local price of $5 for a SMALL bionico. I've read several other reviews that have stated that they paid $3.50 for the same thing I ordered. Perhaps they don't list prices for this reason, so they can charge different prices on a whim, or if they think you're a dumb rich gringo. I wouldn't mind going back but I really hope they don't continue this practice of price hiking. read more

My nephew was craving one of La Palapas nieves de limon at 9:10 pm and as we got there we noticed that the doors were locked but the owner caught us as we were walking back to the car and allowed us to treat my nephews craving. Last Monday my boyfriend brought us some mangoneadas for dessert while watching Monday night football. It was so delicious i couldn't wait to have another one, so i had to go back and get another one on thursday! The mangoneadas have Mexican ice cream not ice like other places. This place has THE BEST mangoneadas I've ever had and I've tried several places around Los Angeles. I haven't tried anything else from this place but did notice that they have Thrifty's ice cream aside from the Mexican ice cream. I've been to La Palapa several times since it opened and have tried a new and delicious treat each time. I started with an escamocha, moved onto mangoneada and just recently tried el diablito. Each of them were delicious! The service can be a little sluggish at times because it's usually just the owner and a helper taking care of everything but that's understandable. My husband and I came in together once and the owner gave us a two for discount. Even without the discount, the prices are very reasonable compared to yogurt, ice cream, etc. Clean place, friendly people, super yummy and somewhat healthy alternatives to traditional desserts.
