You can always count on one thing with golf courses. It all starts with the front desk. So one day I was going to hit balls, then I thought maybe I should go play around. So I go to the front desk and the young lady working there was counting money from the register. She did NOT even acknowledge me. She didn't even glance up and I was standing right in front of her. No "Hold on for a minute" or "Give me a sec" or "Someone will help you in a second". I know a lot of golfers in the area are Asian and probably don't speak the language well nor know the customs. And this is a problem at many golf courses when you see Asians or any minority of limited speaking ability being treated rudely. So on with the story, it was possibly two minutes later until someone else came in and decided to help me. The rude young lady at the desk didn't say anything else and just went back to work. As the self proclaimed LA/OC/Desert golf guru, this is one place I don't really recommend unless I was really drunk. I'll play this course again, I'll get really drunk and I'm going to drive my cart on your greens and engrave my name "J O E Y" on the greens as well. Golf is a classy game and course management all starts with the front desk. The course is okay. Too many hackers and duffers though. read more

A fun executive golf course or short course. If you're getting into golf, this is a good beginners course. Or a seasoned vet working on the approach. Its a little tricky, so its not some slob's 18 hole. The front starts out easy, a few 300 yd holes and bunkers on either sides. Then the back 9s have a few water hazards to watch and bunkers are challenging. Its a total of 3500 yds. The facilities are well kept, nice staff, carts / walk and drink girl rides around the course. I always like coming here after suffering a long week of deskitis. read more

This golf course will be closed for construction soon. It's a great course for juniors. Decent greens. Reasonable rates for Orange County. I had an issue with one particular older gentleman that works there. He always seems bitter when I'm here with my kids. I don't know if he's not keen on kids, women or various ethnic groups but he seemed totally congenial with other folks (his age, gender & ethnic group). I don't want to give the impression that the rest of the staff or management at the course condones this because everyone else I've talked to has been really nice. But, when someone speaks to you in a manner with a look on his face like you don't belong, it can really put a damper on your day. This has happened a couple of times now, that's why I post it. Also, we've played twice where we were behind their junior development group. I bring out my 8 & 6 year olds. My 8 year old has par'd 3 holes on 9 so we keep pace of play up with the adults. But, when we were stuck behind their junior development groups, we had some really long waits. One group had a 5-some with no adult supervision from what we could tell. Another group had boys who were very young, again, hardly any adult supervision. There were 2 foursomes ahead of us and 3 foursomes behind us who left after the 1st hole. I'm guessing they went to play the back-9. Either way, the instructors should make an effort to move pace of play if they have students out there. read more

Great track. Played twilight for $20 including range balls and a drink. Course is inviting and the staff is great. Very friendly. Think I enjoyed the back 9 better than the front. It's more resort style with a large lake surrounding the holes. Overall, fun Executive course. Highly recommended. read more

This place has NO sense of what good customer service is. First, we stopped by to purchase a gift card and with one person working the tables, bar counter and pro shop, I could understand why she couldn't smile. When we decided to use the gift card, got plenty of smiles at the counter and great attention, but with only 1 person working the counter, tables and reservations, it was too much for 1 person to handle efficiently. And when we did pay for the round, it was a difference of only 2 dollars for a senior golfer, which is ridiculous for such a short course. I won't be back and will probably tell my Senior citizen father he can probably get better senior rates elsewhere. read more

I used to play this course once a month and now I would never take my money there. They should bull doze this place down and build more little town homes onto it. There are "greens?" to putt on if you can consider them that, they are more of a grainy carpet material. The course is literally dead dirt, I haven't seen as much dried out, dead and utterly horrendous conditions in some time. Although I feel like some of the yardage signs were incorrect (or I managed to hit a whole 30 yards harder than normal...), at least the course was well-managed and nicely manicured. A snack girl comes around in her golf cart every so often. Over the course of 18 holes, I think I saw her around 3 times. Not too bad? My friends said that the last time they came they only saw her once, so just in case, buy from her the first time you see her! Also, I think it was like $2.50 for a soda. RIDICULOUS! This place has pretty good value. I just paid $27 for a round. Extra $6 for a pull cart or extra $11.50 to ride a cart. This ain't bad for a full executive course. Even on a Saturday morning at 9AM, we were able to book this tee time just the day before. I was assuming that since this is a municipal course and its pretty cheap that it would be a run down place. It really isn't. This place was fairly well maintained. No big patches of brown grass or crab grass. Greens were mowed and not beat up. The practice range is on real grass! The front 9 holes are relatively easier than the back 9 because of its shorter par 3s. Not too many hazards around so even my shanks were landing in decent spots to hit. I'll probably come here again if I need a quick golf fix and want to walk a course. As long as the greens and tee boxes are kept as well as it was today, I'll keep this place in my portfolio of courses to go. read more

Hey it gets the job done. Usually pretty packed as all municipal course are. hole 4, 5 and 10 are good though. No par 5's but there are a couple fun par 4s, hole 4 you can drive the green which is nice :) Decent greens, the fairways are in good enough shape. If you're a beginner this is a great course to learn on. There is a cart girl, driving range, chipping area, and restaurant/bar. A couple of the kids working the counter were rude both on the phone and in person but that happens, no biggie. read more

Great little course with nice improvements happening on the driving range and outdoor patio. Pace of play is usually decent. My only small issue is the condition of the greens. They can be a little bumpy, but for the or price, it's still a fun golf experience. Really nice bar staff, too. I play here about once a month and wIll continue to do so. read more

Birch Hills is a great executive layout in Brea. The front nine is highlighted by the two consecutive par 4's, the 4th and 5th holes. The back nine is (by far) the best side of the course. The layout on the back is more modern, resort-like and challenging. The fairways on the back side's par 4's are tighter and reward a good shot with nice approaches into fairly straightforward greens. As far as the 'culture" of the course, it's a little pretentious in terms of the clientele and a little pricier than it's main competition in North OC, Fullerton Golf Course. Birch does have a tendency to attract lots of older golfers and female golfers that can really slow things down. Be prepared to be there for a good 4+ hours. Birch is good about encouraging walking and if you grab the free "Southland Golf" magazine on the way into the clubhouse you can take advantage of a discount coupon inside. All in all, Birch is a very nice, challenging executive course where the pace of play is deliberate, even slow. Look for a discount tee time to pay what the place is actually worth and not the inflated walk-up rates they try to impose on you. PS- This course is very kid-friendly! Swing away, kids! read more

The STAFF (woman in clubhouse) and CART GIRL were friendly and very helpful. Unfortunately, this course is a work-in-progress so the clubhouse is a mini shed for now. As a result, there isn't any real food other than snacks. We didn't plan for that. The course feels like a 3/4 done project so with that in mind it was just fine. The signage pointing you to the next hole is still in crates near the clubhouse. But they look pretty classy with a faux stone look. We enjoy executive courses and this was a fun one to play. The driver only came out about 4 times for me given my range is 220-260 with that club. The par 3's had some interesting slanted greens on the front 9 which made them a little challenging. The course is in pretty good shape especially given the current CA drought. Walking it was a little tiring since this was our 3rd course for the week and it was pretty warm. Regardless, I welcomed the exercise. They have many cold water thermos stations throughout and even provide paper cups. We played on a promo deal which was a nice offer. The course has a feel like someone took over a big park and decided to turn into a golf course. I think that stems from the fact that they build some condos around it and had to re-work the layout. Unfortunately since this course was remodeled over the past 4 years it was not correct in my Garmin GPS watch. Thus, we had to use the wife's phone. I like the new course layout. The tee boxes and greens were in good shape. It looks like they are trying to improve on the grassless patches...especially important around the greens. It would be nice if they had a snack bar & bathrooms by the 10th tee - they did provide a "courtesy cart" for those of us walkers to drive over to the clubhouse - nice gesture. I have played this course infrequently for decades. it has gone through 3 redesigns since it first opened. We played in the afternoon, the course was a little beat up (bare patches and rough spots) around the greens and tee boxes. The greens were just okay, but had a lot of un-repaired ball marks. The range balls were quite used and the range had mats and grass to hit off, this day it was grass. With a cart (only a two-some) it took us 3 hours. The price was enticing at $31. Although I wish the course was in better overall condition, I think it was a pleasant outing. If the price was higher I am not sure the value would be there. read more

Solid executive course in Brea. Not too much variation but a great place to practice. The Course: Birch Hills doesn't try to be anything it's not. There are 5 par 4's and 13 par 3's. 4 of the par 4's are over 325 yards, one is eagle material weighing in at 239 from the tips. Course was in great shape when I played it, especially the greens. Pace of Play: Slowed down a lot on the back 9 when I played here. But for an executive course this nice, you figure it'll draw on the weekends. Value: Not bad at all. Always has tons of email deals, online deals and also accepts the RedDot book on weekends. You can walk or take a cart. If you work or live anywhere near Brea and want to learn how to play golf, this is the perfect course. read more

Didn't know it was possible to have such a bad time on the golf course. Went to ply a round of golf morning of the 4th and booked a single tee time for 8:48 and brought my son along to ride in the cart and just hang out. He doesn't golf. Now let me say I think it is absolutely ridiculous to charge a fee for someone to ride along in the golf cart but understand this is a pretty common practice. For someone who is a rewards member and typically plays the course 1-2 times a week, do you really want to be alienating your customers like that but that wasn't even the issue. I would of paid the $12 begrudgingly but I would have paid. Not only did they bump me a single down to 9:06 so then I had to wait behind two more groups of 4 they wanted to charge me $22 for a spectator fee and cart fee for my non-golfing son to sit in the cart with me. absolutely ridiculous and highway robbery. it was personal, the 4 some in front had a toddler with them actually swinging the golf club and they weren't charged anything and when I asked "they didn't see him" Don't bring your spectators to Birch Hills the will rob you blind!!! read more

Came this morning for a round of golf and my brother and I were paired with random people. If it were any other time this would be fine with us but due to the nature of the situation going on with covid-19 this is not safe. We are younger people and we do not want to infect the elders around the course if we are asymptomatic. We went back to the pro shop and asked for a refund because we want to do our part in not spreading the virus and the guy at the pro shop was extremely rude and just told us, "that's how it is". Yes, we understand that's how it is in normal golf but during modified golf, that should not be how it is. Everyone who is reading this, please do your part in slowing the spread and do not come here. I am adding an edit as I forgot to mention that no one on the course was wearing a mask except for the starter and the person working at the pro shop. It was one of the reasons my brother and I opted to not play the round. I wish I had taken a picture. read more

Man I used to love playing here. The green and fairways were always kept really clean regardless of the time of year. The course is all dried up, the tee boxes are horrible, fairways are dry to the point where you hit a shot in the fairway and end up hitting from a patch of dirt, the sand in the bunkers is hard and the greens are the worst ive ever seen them. Ive played other courses this summer and this one looks like it hasnt seen a drop of water all year. They seem to promote their clubhouse and live music more there than trying to maintain the course. Difficult to go out and play a round of golf when the condition of of the course is this bad. read more

The driving range is great since you are allowed to hit off grass. Since the course re-design they have extended the length of the driving range so you can now use your driver. All of the staff is very friendly. My 5 year-old daughter takes private lessons from Jeanne Weaver, who has a lot of experience and is great with little ones. I would highly recommend her for private lessons especially for little ones. All of the prices are reasonable in my opinion; green fees, private lessons and range balls. So this review is just based off of the new driving range and private golf lessons. I plan to play the new course sometime soon, which is walking only at the moment. I am writing to explain my very very awful experience at Birch Hill. I went to practice with my friend, and I bought one large bucket for us. My handicap is +9~+10, my friend is a beginner, handicap +25. I just wanted to help my friend's golf swing, After 5 minutes, Mrs. Jeannie (teaching person at Birch Hills) came to us and told me : "Private lesson is not allowed here" and I answered her "I know very well, But I am not doing private lesson, I just help my friend" She did not want to listen to me and said to me very rude: "Everyone says that, You have to stop private lesson. This time I let you finish your balls" And I said "It is not private lesson, but I understand, we'll finish our balls" Then, She came to us 2-3 times more, and finally told me "This is not a joke, that's it. You have to leave now!!!!) and We could not finish our balls and we had to leave the practice range. I totally do not understand her behavior. She was so rude...... and at that time, a father came to the practice range with his son right next to me. And the father helped his son's golf swing. That was private lesson too, then!!!!!!! I do not understand why we had to leave the range. I felt discriminated....... I was deeply disappointed, I go to Birch Hill Club, because I love food there, nice and kind staff, But this woman is very very horrible person... and I watched her lesson for a while...Mrs. Jeannie needs a private lesson, She does not know how to hit the golf ball. She hits the balls like a beginner!!!!! This is a shame!!!! How can she teach other people...... Mr. General Manager, You need a high level teaching pro not an amateur teacher who is so rude and an racist!!! I am so upset and disappointed!!!!! read more

Payed $40 dollars to be harassed. I can see being warned about a beer that I brought (was empty) but coming by and harassing me over when I'm supposed to tee off....? Will never spend another dime at this establishment. Would not recommend this place for any beginner golfer even though their holes are designed for such. read more

I am definitely coming back here again this place is amazing. The food is fantastic and cooked to perfection. We had steak and honestly it is the juiciest most delicious steak I've ever had. The driving range was extemly fun and for because I am completely ignorant on how to golf and or even swing a club the person behind the bar gave me great pointers.
