We went to BirchTree for brunch today. The place is contemporary, open and tables were very spread out. The staff was warm and friendly, we were served with smiles and we reAlly appreciated it. As for the food, everything we tried was 5/5, really good quality ingredients and the breads were AMAZING!! We had the Olive and Feta toast, Caprese sandwich, Tripleberry toast, Truffle home fries, and latte. The food was fabulous, place was pretty and not loud, made it perfect for catch up. This place is absolutely incredible. We came here for lunch during the week after it was recommended to me by a colleague. It's inside a mall-like structure that also contains a bookstore, a clothing store, and a really unique store selling cacti and other foliage. It's a counter-order type of place and there are a TON of choices on the menu. There's baked stuff, breads, coffees, breakfast pastries, breakfast sandwiches, regular-lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, EVERYTHING. Much to my liking, they also have a drink menu. We stood awkwardly taking up space in the queue area, mulling over the menu-items written in chalk above the cash register. I ultimately decided on the Apple Cranberry Mule with vodka, apple cider, cranberry juice, ginger beer, and topped off with a handful of craisins. COB ordered her standard bloody mary. Now for the food, the online menu is literally so small it requires a microscope to read so excuse me if I get some shit wrong on here. Only over my dead body would I pass up an order of the olive & herb toast with whipped feta, oo, and herbs. I planned on ordering one of their breakfast specials: the veggie breakfast sandwich. Unfortunately, they were not still serving breakfast at the apparently inappropriate time of like 11, so I had to think fast and switch up my order. It wasn't difficult, as the devil on my shoulder had been whispering "grilled cheese" since we entered the place. Tina surprised me actually with her order of the vegetarian sandwich. We were handed a number and scooted into the dining room to choose a table. The dining room is a topic of conversation in of itself. Firstly, it's huge. It's very rustic with wooden chairs and tables of different styles and heights. We were able to snag a booth against the window with striking views of downtown Worcester. Our drinks were brought over to us. Mine was fantastic. It was sweet and refreshing without being overwhelming. That sucker didn't last 20 min on the table. Tina's bloody was very spicy and she was still wrestling with it at the end of our meal. The olive and herb toast was incredible. Olive-flavor was very adequately represented. The feta was whipped to the consistency of a light cloud. The olive oil drizzle enhanced the seasoning. We decided to split our sandwiches. The vegetarian is a wonderfully fresh sandwich with a nice, thick layer of spring mix greens, oven roasted red peppers, eggplant, goat cheese, and a layer of goat cheese with a schmear of white bean spread on rustic, whole-grain bread. I'm usually not losing my shit over eggplant but it was nice here, not too overwhelming. The goat cheese and white bean spread added another dimension to the ingredients of the sandwich. This is a great choice on the menu. The grilled cheese is on the crispiest, crunchiest bread I've ever had the pleasure of ripping into with my chompers. They grilled that shit to absolute perfection. The cheddar is plentiful and gooey but the flavor is not very prominent. It's more of a texture than a strong component of the sandwich. The real star of the show was the apple mash or whatever that word I can't see on the menu is. It was not overwhelmingly sweet and I actually enjoyed it in a grilled cheese more than I would think. The bread was a raisin bread and the whole hodgepodge of flavor was really unusual. I would also like to add that ordering and paying for the food first is great. I love getting that shitty part of the meal over with. The food here was fantastic. I will absolutely be back to sample some of their coffees, pastries, and more of the food. read more

I am surprised by the high ratings for BirchTree. We liked the vibe, and the people where friendly. The food, frittata Lorraine, had good flavor, but was way too salty. The bread that came with it was not good. Too tough, chewy, bland. This was disappointing since it's a bread company. And I agree with other reviewers - the way this place works is unclear. We found a table, but there wasn't a menu or number on it. You pay the tip when you order your food, but we didn't know that you have to serve yourself water and clear your own plate/trash. read more

Sweet Bread Pudding ($6.50) Listed as chocolate almond hazelnut on the website but turned out to be chocolate coconut on the menu in person and unfortunately the coconut ruined the texture for me. It came with two rectangular pieces of bread pudding and a small cup of whipped cream and chocolate "ganache" sauce. The bread pudding had a lot of melted chocolate inside, which was great, but the primary texture was chewy coconut. Wouldn't get any coconut bread puddings again. Chocolate butterscotch graham croissant donut ($3.00) Chewy croissant dough (not a lot of visible layers inside) topped with a dark chocolate and butterscotch(?) cream. The dark chocolate topping was the best part. I wouldn't choose this over a regular cake or yeast donut. Leaving a review as a delivery driver. Their wait times for drivers are way off- I have spent 20 minutes waiting past the expected time before. There is no designated place for pick-ups, so you have to wait through the line like a customer who is ordering, and they are never not busy. Parking is terrible, with your only options to park illegally and hope to get out before you get ticketed, or pay to park (if you can even find a space). It is in Kelley Square, so the traffic is horrible to boot. read more

This place used to be great before the owners of Crust stepped in. Went today and ordered a breakfast sandwich and a cheese pizza. Pizza came out quick and prompt. After 40-ish minutes of waiting on the breakfast sandwich, I finally had to find someone (because there are no waiters/waitresses) to ask about the sandwich. They had skipped right over it and forgot all about it. It came out an additional 10 minutes later and was subpar at best. On top of this, a manager (?) came over and asked if he could "stick 2 more people at our table with us" because it was busy and there weren't enough tables. I'm not sure if people are convinced that COVID is no longer existent or are just ignorant, but if I'm out to eat with my significant other I absolutely don't want random people sitting at my table with us. That question was really the cherry on top to an already bad experience. With all of the other restaurants leaving the Canal District, it is now left with restaurants that are simply not great. First experience- probably would not go back. When we went to order , we were told to sit and use the QR code. Ok. No problem. We ordered 3 sandwiches and it came to $50. The sandwiches were made carelessly one being burnt. Their creative and ingredients were pretty tasty. Our table was sticky and clearly had not been cleaned in a while. The brunch was yummy - the cranberry grilled cheese is a must try - and the coffee selection is pretty good. The lavender london fog was delicious. There isn't a lot of parking nearby so on a Saturday morning it was a little rough, but not impossible. We took a loaf of rosemary bread home with us and it wasn't worth the price ($7), but I would go back for a sandwich if I'm in the area. read more

Hands down my favourite Cafe in Worcester downtown. Friendly staff who welcomes you with a smile. It gives a good feeling that they are happy working there and love their job. Their Quiche is so good. Perfect crust and soft in the middle with bursting flavors. Many varieties of coffee to choose from and if you wanna have a beer/wine their collection is really good. Nice bands on wed and friday however for a work place it is perfect. Love their focaccia to take home. Next thing to try : Their pizza. Hipster, homey, and a great rainy day lunch spot in Worcester. We arrived on Saturday around noon and waited in the line to order for about 20 minutes. The regular menu as well as the daily specials are displayed on large chalkboards over the counters, so you can think it all over while you wait. You can also check out local stuff on sale like mugs, soaps, milk, jams, and butters. All very tempting while you're hungrily waiting. At the front of the line, staff was super friendly when we ordered and gave us a number to stick on our table, so they know where to send our goods once they're ready. I also got a local kombucha on tap (interestingly, they asked to see my ID to buy it even though it's less than 2% ABV), and we also got some big chocolate chip cookies right away. Luckily, we were able to locate a booth toward the back of the large space. The atmosphere is pleasant with wood, large windows, and dim lighting. They had a band playing music in the corner which made our wait pretty enjoyable and set a great tone inside. It seems like everyone in Worcester is here on this rainy weekend day - including lots of families with young children. But we still felt pretty relaxed while we waited. About half an hour later, our food arrives! I got the savory bread pudding of the day which was flavored with bacon and a jalapeno cream sauce. I've never eaten anything like this before - it was bready and smoky and at first I wasn't sure if I liked it, but after a few bites, I decided I did. It came with a great little salad of local greens and veggies. BF and friend split the meatball sandwich and the turkey sandwich. They agreed that the winner by far was the meatball, as the turkey had too much mayo and was just less flavorful. The meatball was warm and comforting with a large piece of meat encased in delicious bread. It also came with an interesting apple salad. This isn't exactly a grab-and-go sandwich spot. It's a place with a nice vibe that you can really enjoy and stay a while. The meatball was HUGE and it was so tasty! The fries were fresh and well seasoned. The only complaint is that the ice teas aren't sweetened, I had to ask for extra sweetener. I stopped here while passing through Worcester on my way back to Maine. I was with coworkers and we were just looking for a quick bite to eat off the highway. Yelp guided me here. First - the location. This place was quick to navigate to from the highway - although we did have to go through the most terrifying intersection I have ever seen. And, it was right across the street from Table Talk pies, which has a store!! (Mental note - need to check that out someday.) The space was in an old building and the décor was eclectic. We sat in a booth by the windows (to watch our car and make sure we didn't get a ticket because the meter wasn't working.) It was drafty - very drafty. And then I realized, there was a full quarter inch gap between the window and the frame!! I'm not kidding - I stuck my fork through it. I should have taken a picture. The service - it was a little slow. We ordered three sandwiches and a bowl of soup. We waited easily 20 minutes for this to come. And, while the place was steady, it just didn't seem like it should take this long. But, all of the employees were kind and friendly - more than willing to help. Once you got their attention. Now, for the reason you come here - the food. Oh. My. God. I had a sandwich in the vein of a Reuben. The corned beef was out of this world. They use gruyere instead of Swiss. And, they make house made kraut with purple cabbage. Topping it off with a grainy mustard instead of 1000 island. All served on the biggest rye toasted bread you can imagine. My coworkers agreed that their sandwiches were heavenly. The one that got soup and a sandwich didn't plan to finish it all as it was a hearty portion - but just couldn't stop eating as it was so good. Birch Tree has a way of managing being busy with being fast that's really appreciated. They're so busy because the food is delicious, the atmosphere is unique, and live music plays a few days a week (including weekends). It's also a great location with many shops in the same building. There are two lines, one for grab and go items, and one for ordering food when you plan to dine in. You can help yourself to mason jars of water and utensils while you find a place to sit, which is a quick set up since you don't have to wait for a table to be set. The downside is having to scope out a spot when it gets crowded. Birchtree is a quaint cafe nestled in a side street off the all too famous Kelley Square. Its a nice change of pace going into birchtree compared to the places nearby. The cafe is super cute and there is a plethora of seating. I was lucky enough to snag a huge booth with outlets nearby. Saturday mornings there is a band so don't go there to get peace and quiet on that day. The staff was very friendly and willing to explain anything on their menu. I ordered a large iced tea, which came out to be HUGE. It was like a bucked of tea (which I needed). If you live in or near Worcester and are looking for delicious homemade bread, other pastries and good coffee at a reasonable price - stop by. It is located on Green Street above the Crompton Collective and Farmers' Market. Staff is happy and helpful. Loaf of bread is about $5 which is definitely worth it considering the quality. I also tried a chocolate chip cookie - large about the size of a flattened softball - lots of chunks of chocolate. About $1.75 but again worth it. Location is an old warehouse so high ceilings, big windows and great music playing. They serve homemade soups and also have a nice selection of local cheeses. I'd like to start by saying that overall the staff is very friendly and hospitable. I've had their pastry and breads on many occasions, but yesterday was my first time trying their lunch. Their online menu is outdated compared to what they have available in store. They did not have the meatball available and online the chicken salad says on croissant, however, I check my order before leaving it was on a ciabatta. When I notified the staff I was asked if I wanted a croissant and said here you can put it in this if you'd like, the croissant doesn't hold the chicken salad. I had only been here before to get bread to go, so recently my partner and I went to the Holiday Stroll and stopped at Birch Tree for breakfast. First of all you have to love the old mill feeling in the building...brick walls old wood flooring and exposed pipes. A nice industrial feel. We ordered our breakfast sandwiches and coffees (really wanted to try the almond croissants because that is one of my favorite things, but they weren't ready yet), we found a nice booth in front of the windows and near the 'stage' where 2 gentlemen played some nice music (including Christmas carols). We had a delicious breakfast sandwich with our coffees while we watched the snow falling outside and listening to the music (pretty perfect). My partner went back to see if the almond croissants were ready and came back with one to share. As I said almond croissants are my favorite and these did not disappoint!!! I ended up at BirchTree not once, but TWICE during my 24 hour stint in Worcester! The first day, I popped in for lunch. They offer a variety of sandwiches, salads, toasts, and daily specials including a sweet and savory bread pudding, quiche, soups and more! I was feeling healthy-ish so ordered the roasted corn and black bean salad special and a cookie (I did say healthy-ISH). After all, I couldn't resist how good they looked! While it was hard to not go for the peanut butter chocolate chip, the toasted walnut and fig sounded too unique to pass up. It was delicious! The salad was good as well. Tasted very fresh and pretty filling. Now, the next morning is when things got interesting... I was starving so went for the breakfast sandwich: ham, sharp cheddar, a fried egg and, the best part, it was all on a bacon fat brioche bun! That's right: BACON FAT BRIOCHE BUN. I really appreciated hot sauces being at the ready which I doused on top. True story: this was one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches ever. It was super filling and oh so worth it. To sip, I tried coffee in the morning and iced tea for the afternoon. They offered four varieties of iced teas which came in hearty portions. I opted for green tea and it was perfecto. I was surprised to see they have an impressive selection of craft beer, as well as some wine. The space is very big so perfect to meet with friends, do some work, and more. Thursday morning while I was there, there was a children's music performer that made for quite the crowd. I would give it four stars but each day, I didn't find the staff to be too friendly or helpful since I was new to the space. They're definitely busy so I understand, but a little friendliness can go a long way. Pro Tip: There's a parking lot around back (off of Harding) that's free but can fill up! Went for the first time with a friend for lunch. I wasn't completely surprised by how pricey the food was because I'd already read reviews saying how great the food was. What I was surprised about was the fact that: 1. If you ordered more than 2 dishes...there's no room for any plates or other food items at a tiny 2 person table. You also can't just pull the empty table next to you over so that all your food (2 pizzas - maybe 8", full salad, 2 plates & 2 glasses of water - you get yourself) fit. We were chastised by "waitresses" eventho we told them we needed more room. 3. No one brings you plates. I asked the guy who brought the first pizza & salad for plates & he said he'd bring them back. I later learned from another "waitress" when they brought us to a bigger table, "you can just take them from where ever you see them, here, there's some at the end of this table right here, you can have these"...as she takes them without asking the other guests who are eating their meals. HOW do you just take plates from someone else's table & give them to other guess?!?? I have NO IDEA who may've touched those plates with nasty hands OR had an allergen on them!!! 4. When each person orders their food, it doesn't all come out together. Had I known mine would be out first & there'd a 10+ mins lag for my friend, we would've put everything on 1 order. 5. We had to get our own to go containers. 6. When we stood up to leave, the "waitress" come over & asked "do you know where the trash was?" My friend said yes...so we cleared our own table. She never bothered to ask if everything was ok. 7. My tip didn't bankrupt me, however, had I known all this BEFORE when I placed & prepaid for my order including a hefty tip...I would've either based my tip on the entire experience & if I decided to, I would've left the cash on the table or at the register upon leaving. Knowing what I know now, I'd return in spite of this being a weird first experience because the food was good. Also, unless I'm going to be in the area for something else, there's no chance I'd waste so much time being stuck in traffic around there & then trying to find parking.
