Harbinger of the fate of The Canal District (a.k.a. the Anal District), my recent experience at Birch Tree left,, literally, everything to be desired. The one star is given because, at very least, a full refund was proferred for the miserable experience I, and my well- experienced -in-hipness jive Boston friend, were given. Otherwise, it would be no stars. Where do I begin? An ill-conceived ordering process, including a chalk-board with no up-to-date information and crammed full of incomprehensible and misleading offerings greets us, with such succulent options as " Homemade Locally- Sourced Bowl of Autumn Squash Creamy etc. Soup for a mere $8.50" {which turns into, 20 minutes later, a half-filled bowl of grey and tasteless mush garnished with a puddle of even more tasteless "olive" oil, stale nuts, and dried "herbs", served with a slice of so-called "homemade" bread which was probably a week old, and mummified, a tastleless mug of black water labeled "coffee", an obscenity,called the "Quiche du jour" consisting of perhaps half a sorry egg with oldish potatoes lying dead in a soggy crust, lukewarm and sodden with, apparently, the tears of the crew of a dozen lost souls plodding zombielike around the unfortunately open-to-public-view kitchen area. There are no positives, except perhaps the tolerable, though overpriced, double espresso shot my guest imbibed. Is Worcester so starved for Big City suavity that they would settle for this travesty of a rip-off? I hope, and pray, not. Seeing the current chair of the Worcester Chamber of Commerce entertaining unknown guests upon my arrival does not bode well for the "Canal District", Birch Tree Bread Company, nor the city of Worcester. read more

As a first time customer to the Birchtree bread and co. I was actually really confused. There was no one there or available to give directions or let us know how things worked. I have no problem with cafeteria style restaurant. But I usually know ahead of time, that is basically what it is. The staff was kinda unfriendly if it wasn't for their regular patrons I wouldn't know what to do. We ordered the bloody Mary. It was very good. Little spicy but that's what I like My sandwich was very disappointing. The flavor was good but the bread was definitely over cooked. Actually a little burnt. I may have said something but again there was no one available to ask questions. Maybe I will try you again. But it is going to be awhile. I hope you take my criticism to help, not hurtful. read more

BirchTree Bread Company is honestly one of my favorite spots! The staff is always so kind and welcoming, and everything they make -- from the pastries to the sandwiches to the coffee -- is so good. You can really tell everything's made with care. It's also such a great vibe if you're looking to get some work done but still want to be around people and feel part of a community. The atmosphere is spacious, light-soaked, and stunning. Anything I tasted was delectable and mouth-watering, from coffee to bread to salad to sandwiches. I would practically live here if I could walk here. I look forward to going out more to hear some live music and other experiences at the BirchTree, and I would also like to make it a routine to go to visit friends and maybe write there. The cafe is super cute and there's plenty of seating available. I was fortunate enough to grab a large booth nearby with outlets. There's a band on Saturday nights, so don't go there to make peace on that day. The employees were very helpful and happy to explain everything on their menu. I ventured to BirchTree Bread last weekend, and was in astonishment once I saw the interior. There is honestly no other place like this in Worcester. I love the aesthetic. The food is also very tasty- I got toast with jam and was blown away. Everything is so fresh and real.
