Bird Dog tonight. Our third visit which we chose to celebrate our anniversary ( one day ago)and New Years Eve was terribly disappointing. So much so that we asked for our check after the appetizer. We love the food here, but the service is just ridiculously bad. Strangers next to us were sharing the same bad service and some humor about it which lightened the mood. I have never asked my husband to get a check early. That is how frustrated we were. We like good food and nice dining, sort of casual upscale. However, when you bill yourself that way, you got to produce on all fronts. Having one service person who seats and clears (in that order) tables, takes your order 30 minutes later and never brings service ware ( napkins, utensils) or water even after a request is terrible. We got our appetizer at 25 minutes in, but had nothing to eat it with or wipe our hands on should we choose to eat hot, saucy cauliflower with our fingers. Our drinks came 40 minutes after being seated, well after the starter. We were not alone, tables on either side of us experienced the same. One of those guests complained. Those seated at the bar definitely did not experience the same service. Guess the tables are an afterthought. So, in short. Good food. Terrible service. Owner likes to chat with bar sitters. How about expediting a few things instead? read more

My boyfriend and I decided to try Bird Dog for the first time. When we got there they were busy for lunch and so we waited at the bar for a patio table. It's so much fun to watch the cooks prepare all the food. Every single thing that left that kitchen looked absolutely amazing! We finally made it outside to our table and ordered. A short while later our server delivers my meal and not my boyfriends. She apologized that she accidentally ran his burger to a different table and that the cooks were making him a new one right away. We patiently waited and awhile later she came back and apologized that there was a miscommunication in the kitchen and the cooks did not start the burger but were actually starting it this time. They felt really bad and said they were taking his burger off our bill. They then came back outside and said they were taking my meal off our check as well. When we finally got his bacon cheeseburger he loved it. It had thick slices of bacon on it that tasted almost like it was cooked over the campfire. He said it was the best bacon cheeseburger he's ever had. My Nashville chicken sandwich was HUGE and the homemade chips were so addicting. Long story short, Bird Dog was kind and displayed great customer service! We understood that they were busy, had new staff and mistakes happen. The food was well worth the wait and we can't wait to go back! Our only regret was not getting the firecracker cauliflower for an appetizer. read more

The chicken sandwich is fried perfectly which hints of heat, not spicy enough but so well cooked it doesn't matter. I'm not sure where to start. The beautiful renovation, the open kitchen, or the amazing food? It is cozy and has limited seating, but totally worth the wait if a table or a place at the bar isn't available. When we arrived, there was only room at the bar. I'm so glad. We got to watch the food being prepared and plated. Matt's (the owner) attention to detail in every plate was fun to watch. We ordered the lamb meatballs as an appetizer. They were perfection, i had the filet and subbed the squash for the risotto, my friends had the gnocchi, mac n cheese and the pork chop. Everything came out perfectly. This place is a hidden gem! It was packed on Friday night (always a good sign) and the aromas as you walk in are to die for! We shared the Firecracker Cauliflower = delicious as was the Mushroom Toast. We then shared the Sliced Filet (cooked PERFECTLY) and the Scallops-melt in your mouth! Save room for the Carrot Cake too as you will not be disappointed. Incredible that a restaurant of this caliber can be nestled in the tiny town of Mattawan. Well done Matt the Chef/Owner! My family and I absolutely love this place. I came here with my parents to celebrate my 21st birthday and we had an absolute blast. All of the cocktails were delicious. I ordered the blueberry martini and my mom ordered the moscow mule and they were both fantastic. That being nothing compared to how amazing the food was. All of our dishes were food that we could have dreams about because it was so good. I had the Buddha Bowl which was melt in your mouth delicious, and the steak was cooked to perfection. The salmon was also very good, I can't remember the last time I had salmon cooked so well and the flavor was excellent. It is a pricey place, but absolutely worth it for the great food, stellar service, and good atmosphere! Cannot recommend enough. read more

Staff follows mask guidelines which is good to see. Lobster bisque was so salty I barely ate any. Chopped salad was plentiful, but lettuce was old and brown. I would have expected better from a restaurant which shows five stars. Wonder who gave that rating? read more

Very flavorful, the right amount of creamy ness and garlic... my friend ordered the burger and the special sauce on the burger was pretty salty and the hamburger patty tasted steamed vs pan fried or grilled would've been great - the bun wasn't toasted so the whole burger was texturally mushy - the fries that accompanied were very good. Always 5 stars! Have been here many times and it never disappoints. The cauliflower is so addicting I have never had any better anywhere! The shrimp and grits are fabulous. Great option for an upscale meal in the area! Love the outdoor seating option and that they offer brunch on the weekends.

We go at off times to avoid crowds, when they first st open for lunch, around 4:00 pm on weekends and 7 pm Sunday. Each time we've walked right in and got a table Haven't had anything we wouldn't order again. Enjoyed the kale ceasar, steak and frites, firecracker cauliflower, crispy Brussel sprouts, steelhead trout, and the filet mignon. Decent, reasonably priced Cabernet by the glass is a must and they have a couple options. The guys liked the craft beer options. Now we need to get there for breakfast one day. Wow. For a small town, this place has big city flavor. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu. We were here on a Saturday for brunch and the food was delicious. We love Dog in the Bank in Plainwell, so decided to try the "sister" restaurant, and we weren't disappointed. A few things on the menus are the same, but BDog has some delightful differences. We started with the Firecracker Cauliflower - omg, not your Mom's cauliflower. I could eat this for an entire meal: fried, great sauce, spicy but not fiery. My husband enjoyed his potato/leek soup of the day. We also ordered the Mushroom Reuben and the Crab Melt. The latter was fantastic, with lots of crab and great bread, so big I ate only 1/2 of it. The place is tiny, but we went in the middle of the afternoon, a great time to go, we were about the only ones there. Definitely worth the drive there! read more

Visited Bird Dog for the first time today after my daughter suggested we go out for breakfast. So many interesting choices on the menu! We had Vicki's Chilaquiles and the avacado toast with a side of sausage. Both were fantastic! My daughter was impressed with the chef's plating techniques. Stopped for dinner on the way back from the west side of the state to the Detroit area. We didn't know much about the place other than it rated well on yelp. All I can say is WOW. Everything was great. I had the trout and my partner has the lobster roll. We split a chopped salad. Everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Will definitely be back if I'm in the area.
