We ventured down here for dinner Friday night because the menu looked awesome and the Instagram pictures even better. It's a small place but we only had a 45 minute wait for a table and we were allowed to buy drinks from the full wine/beer/cocktail list if we stayed on their sidewalk. We were seated on the patio on a gorgeous night which amped up the ambience of the meal. We started with mussels with chorizo, peanut butter & jelly bacon, and firecracker cauliflower (lightly deep fried with a sweet and spicy sauce). All were stupendous in flavor and presentation but the cauliflower is the one we continued talking about on the ride home and will likely reorder every future trip (although the bacon was a close second!). For entrees, we had the lobster roll, filet mignon over saffron risotto, chili-marinated hangar steak over Mexican street corn, Parmesan-crusted trout and a side of Thai green beans. Everything was supremely flavorful and the produce was very fresh tasting. We all agreed we'd be happy to eat the same thing in future trips but we also wanted to explore more of the menu. The service from the small crew was attentive without being smothering. Our drinks were promptly refilled and food came out in reasonable time, while still allowing us to socialize and not feel rushed. As a side note - be sure to check out the entertaining wallpaper in the bathroom. I won't spoil the fun with a picture. We've already planned our next trip back for dinner and soon we'll be making a brunch plan. Definitely worth a trip! read more

Proper dining establishment. The owners put together an original restaurant in Mattawan that is worth a visit. It has all the finishing touches you might want. They do not have a dessert menu, but instead a rotating house dessert (it was the carrot cake). The dinner menu looks to rotate throughout the months. The Porterhouse steak was great to share between two. The drinks are pretty good, with local craft beer, alongside a curated wine and whiskey selection. The space inside is limited, but they use it well. I could see them adding a second (larger) location in downtown Kalamazoo. Inside is cozy for covid times. The deck is nice, but might be a little warm on hot days. Otherwise, I feel we can move past a playlist of mostly early 90's classic rock; would be nice to see hear some alt-rock and hip-hop classics - but that's just me. This is such a cute spot! I love the feel but can understand the difficulty with seating without a reservation system as it is quite small inside. Thankfully when we went for brunch our wait time was minimal. We ordered drinks at the bar while we waited. I ordered the Spring Mule with Gin, which I enjoyed. It was a little sweet but was made perfectly. One of my friends ordered the Mint Julep; I highly recommend this for a refreshing drink. I was so excited to try the food as I have heard rave reviews about Bird Dog for quite awhile. I was a little disappointed when I realized how few options I had due to their minimal gluten-free items. Unfortunately, this is the reason for my 4-star review. The Firecracker Cauliflower was amazing; definitely a must when ordering. Due to my limited options, I ordered the Bird Dog Double Burger with no bun. The burger was quite dry and lacked flavor and I was not a fan of the breakfast potatoes that came with it. I was expecting typical breakfast potatoes and these had a gravy/ sauce covering them, which also lacked flavor. Both of my friends loved their selections, the Breakfast Plate & Little Jerry Goes To Nashville. The service was great and I really did enjoy the atmosphere, so I will be back in the future. We really like this place. The drinks are always great. Salads have always been so so and I feel like they prepped them way ahead of time and they get kind of soggy. I will say that all of our other meals have been very good. I actually prefer lunch versus dinner here....the Chicken sandwich is excellent. I also love brunch here!!!! read more

One of the best meals I have had in a very long time. Best steaks in the Kalamazoo area. This place is small and they put a lot of attention to detail in their food. It really shows. The firecracker cauliflower is a must-try if you like a little spice. I'm normally not a cauliflower fan but this was awesome! Small place and you cannot make reservations (which I think is awesome -- actually gives people the chance to get in if they are willing to wait). The place is very small so it can feel a little claustrophobic in there. The blt is sublime!!

The portions are small. The prices are outrageous. There is only a small dining room and everyone is on top of each other. Cramped and very loud. Yes they serve locally sourced foods but they are not prepared well at all. The Brussels sprouts were literally burnt to a crisp on the outside and raw in the middle. Look elsewhere is my recommendation. The only plus was they had cans of Boss Tweed available from Old Nation Brewery. read more

We've never had a bad meal, the drinks are always well-made, and the staff is friendly and supportive. The menu rotates regularly, but our top faves are the firecracker cauliflower, filet mignon, burger, and carrot cake! But we've tried several dishes and again...never had a bad meal! Seating is very limited and they're always packed so know that in advance. Make plans to wait and enjoy a nice cocktail (or several) on the front patio while you wait for a table. You don't see many places with 5 stars, so I had to try this place when I found it on yelp, There were four of us in our party and everyone had something different. Across the board everyone loved their meals. 2 salads, one lobster roll and one chicken fritter sandwich. We were also impressed with their beverage selection, all top shelf liquors. I did find one weakness in there selection. They only had Bacardi Rum, when I mentioned it to our waitress, she agreed and seemed receptive to adding Mount Gay. Very good. This is the last place we ate out at before the COVID-19 shut everything down. We started with mushrooms on toast. I did not love this dish- it was ok, but there was some sort of thick white bitter sauce was all over it. Sad because the mushrooms would have made a delicious sauce all in their own. The entrees were great. I had the burger and fries and the fries are delicious, burger had a really interesting mix of seasonings and toppings that balanced the richness of the meat and cheese. My wife had the salmon entree which had a nice sized serving of salmon on it and was both cooked and dressed well. The dessert wasn't great, it was supposed to be a gooey butter cake I think? Dry and unremarkable. It had a very delicious whipped cream on it though. Just put that on a plate with some fruit! Freaking delicious. It was full but we were able to find a table, we tried the cauliflower dish and the mac and cheese as appetizers and they both are a must to have! Really good choices, unique and delicious. The mac and cheese was cooked to perfection as well as the cauliflower. I took a burger as the main dish, and it was okay, the fries were not fresh but the waitress gave us another plate of fresh fries. I would have preferred if the pickle was inside the burger.
