I've seen card board thicker than this sandwich and it probably would taste better too. The lady at the front desk was probably the worst service I've ever had in my life! Actually made rude comments, looked wacked out and was never at the front desk. So when she also forgot a portion of my order I had to lean inside the kitchen to get everything I paid for. To top it off this "chicken sandwich" was like what 5-10% chicken at best? I was working nearby and was looking for lunch in the area in between appointments. I ordered online so I could expedite my plans. The online ordering platform is simple and gave me a surprisingly long estimated pick up time (well over 30 minutes), particularly as I was ordering at the tail end of the lunch hour. While the menu is very small of about 4 things, just different ways to have the fried chicken or fried fish: 3 sandwich types, or as tenders, they know how to cook it very well. I ordered the Little Chucky Chicken Delux Sandwich. It had lettuce, American cheese, green tomato, crispy bacon, a fried egg and spicy mayo on top. The chicken was nice and crisp on the outside with tender white meat inside. I would have liked it spicier considering I ordered the "Hot" level of Nashville hot sauce but it was still good and had a slight kick aftertaste. The brioche bun was fresh and grilled slightly on the outside edges to give it warmth. There also could have been more spicy mayo in my opinion, there were a lot of ingredients so it became a little dry as the mayo got eaten. I also got a side of waffle fries which were good and seasoned perfectly. Overall, I think the food is a bit pricey, I paid $15, for fast served chicken and a small bag of fries. So all the food arrived to my office hot and fresh. Fries were crispy with great flavor. I guess I've been so mesmerized by the chicken sandwich I didn't realize they served waffle fries which are my favorite shape of fries besides curly. Fries stayed crisp even as they cooled down. Chicken sandwich has some phenomenal spice, as in flavor with a small kick of heat. I thought the bun was a bit much at first but after several bites you realize the bun is quite airy and actually light. I felt some heartburn coming on, so be prepared if you know that about yourself. I'm not upset about it. Breading on the chicken wasn't anything super special but it already has so much going on that is great. 10/10 Recommend! We will definitely be dining in soon to get the full experience also, the little bags they package everything in are adorable. read more

Out and about during the weekend.. we are always on the hunt for a good chicken sandwich. I actually googled "best chicken sandwich in Pittsburgh" and Bird on the Run came up as one of the options!? So off we went. Parking was impossible .. even with the weather bad. Parking garage was our only option.. luckily the East Side Bond Garage was only a few blocks away. The catfish sandwich I got was really good and juicy, but the lil chunky chicken deluxe my husband got was thin, dry, and missing the bacon and pickled green tomato that it was suppose to come with. I appreciate a restaurant that has a limited menu as long as they do what they do very well. I feel like Bird On The Run is pretty expensive for just an okay sandwich. I had a Lil Chunky's Deluxe and really liked the pickled green tomato, spicy Mayo, and sunny side egg. TThose three ingredients really elevate the just meh sandwich to a better one. The American cheese also helps, but it could have been a better cheese. The blah lettuce and one measly piece of bacon are afterthoughts for sure, and don't really add to the sandwich. Over all, this sandwich is still the best thing on the menu. Our waffle fries were a little cold but still good. They label your burger with the spice level you get. My #2 spice level didn't feel hot at all. Overall, it hit the spot but I'm still looking for a better chicken sandwich because I'm sure I can find one eventually. read more

Stopped in mid afternoon on a Friday-perfect time to beat the rush. We also made it a combo with the waffle fries and a soft drink. The chicken-according to my wife-is "to die for! Perfectly cooked with none of those grisley, chewy tendon surprises you get elsewhere--you know--you're chowing down on the chicken loving every bite then-bam! A yucky, chewy, disgusting piece of tendon--then-you're done! Nope-this chicken is properly cleaned and prepared. I'd recommend getting at least the #1 spice level because otherwise, the plain is just, PLAIN. But the crunch on that chicken is awesome. The waffle fries are crispy, golden, hot and plentiful. We were stuffed! We also shared a cup of coleslaw but since my wife makes "the best"--well skip it next time. We will definitely return for the best fried chicken we've had in a long time. The waitperson was very nice, helpful and attentive. Restaurant is clean and neat-restroom was also clean which tells you a lot about the rest of the place! If it weren't for the flashing neon signs I might have missed this Shadyside establishment. I've tried 2 other hot chicken locations in downtown and Oakland and feel that what sets BOTR apart was that the price point is a little better--$11 for a sandwich combo meal is a pretty fair deal. My wife and I shared the chicken sandwich at a level 3. It was a little hot for my wife (she would've been happy with the 2), and it was spot on for me. The sandwich was large enough to share and came out piping hot. The waffle fries had the right crispiness, but lacked flavor and there wasn't any ketchup or dipping sauce which was a bit of a disappointment. Probably won't bother getting them again. The chicken itself was fresh, crispy, and full of flavor. It was not overly sauced or spiced, it was just perfect. You can taste that their chicken is fresher and less breaded than fast-food chains. I have a relatively high tolerance for hot/spicy food and 4 (damn hot) is perfect for me! 3 is not spicy enough for me but reasonably spicy for most people I know. I tried chicken strips at 5 (hot af) abd it's slightly challenging but awesome! Pro tip: Get the honey dip with strips/nuggets if you are not sure you can handle the heat. For lunch on this day I decided to go with a chicken combo. That consists of a chicken sandwich (I chose extra hot) with mayo and pickle on a brioche bun and came with fries and a drink. Since nothing that came with the meal really excited me drink wise (those alcoholic slushes certainly did though) I ended up choosing bottled water for my drink. After about a 10 minute wait our food was ready. My chicken sandwich ended up being pretty good as the breading was nice and crispy while the chicken inside was moist and juicy. I loved the little bit of a kick that came from the spicy chicken as well. I also enjoyed the choice of the buttery brioche bun which made it a little more decadent although I wish that they would have toasted the bun a little better. The fries here ended up being pretty good as well as they were seasoned nicely and still hot. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Reading the rest of these reviews, I feel like I just ate food from a totally different place. I did order takeout (thanks coronavirus), but establishments need to produce quality food no matter what. The chicken sandwich I got was the definition of average. First off, my cut of chicken was so disproportionate that it was almost an inch different on one side than the other. I'm shocked that it was cooked through the thick side. Not only was it cooked through, they managed to dry it out somehow. The breading on the outside was so soft that if it wasn't spicy I could have probably wiped my ass with it comfortably. The waffle fries were pretty good. They had a nice crunch and were seasoned well. The fries being crunchy still is a testament to our food not getting less crispy on the drive home, meaning that the chicken was simply just like that.
