I just took my kids there yesterday to look for a cockatiel since ours flew away. I think the man that helped us with the owner and he couldn't have been nicer. I bought my Sun Conure (Rambo) for my mother as a gift from them when he was 7 weeks old and he has been a great addition to the family. I have been a bird owner for 20 yrs, and I believe BIRDS PLUS is second to none as far as knowledge, product, and an overall experience. Case in point, I would like to share a story that any serious bird lover would appreciate. Recently I was having a tough time with my Hyacinth macaw Sparky. She had become very aggressive to the point of danger for the well being of my girlfriend, two dogs, fellow macaw Cosmo the Green wing, and yes, even my self. She had been a family member for over 15 years, and it was becoming obvious, a painful decision was going to have to be made. Luckily, I contacted Lou, who quickly suggested I bring her in. I've know and dealt with the partners since the beginning and had purchased several Birds, Cages, supplies, with never a complaint. What I got from Lou, was far more than I could've expected. He quickly assessed the situation as hormonal. In case you didn't know, Lou is a Breeder and trainer of thousand of birds over the years, and knew exactly what to do. Rather than take the bird and sell it, like most might, Lou quickly offered to take Sparky in to retrain her back to what she once was. He didn't squeeze me for a ridiculous bill. He merely said.. You're not just a customer, you are a friend, and I don't want you to make a rash decision... Well, I'm happy to report Sparkey's condition one month later has greatly improved, and she has come home this week. It will take time, but she is getting better each and every day. The boarding fee was minimal and the reward was more than I could have expected. I want to note- I was not asked to do this. I believe in paying it forward. I have purchased 2 previously owned parrots from this place and I was completely lied to about their history and age. I thought that the history sounded fishy when I bought the first bird but then when I given almost the exact same history when I went back 7 months later about the second bird, I decided to look into it. (I never intended to buy another bird from this place but when I walked in and saw the bird stuck on a perch, feathers missing, malnourished, and with the most disgusting filthy water bowl, I couldn't leave him there.) I was told that this bird was 2-3 years old but when I did a little research, I found out that he was actually 15 years old. There is a price difference of about $700 for a bird of this age. I confronted the owner and he offered to give me my money back but my kids had already bonded with the bird and he had become a part of our family. It is not so much that I am mad about being charged more than I should have been, I am mad that I was blatantly lied to. I will never step foot in this store again. Louie (one of the owners) was such a nice gentlemen, and he was very knowledgeable (as he calls himself the "bird psychologist") I was super pleased with Bird Plus! They had tons, and tons of selections of any birds imaginable and i'm not exaggerating any where from tiny birds, all the way to giant birds, and most of them are trained and tamed! We have been going to Birds Plus for years! We love them. Lou knows everything there is to know about birds and is our "go to guy" for any questions we have about our birds. A few weeks ago he saved my birds life and I will never be able to thank him. Our "Cash" broke 2 blood feathers on his wing one Sunday afternoon. He was bleeding like crazy and my kids and I were in a panic. I ran him over to Lou and minutes later our baby was safe! Lou charged us $10. It would have cost me hundreds at an emergency vet and most likely my birds life - the only vet that could see him doesn't work weekends! Birds Plus has been a staple in the Valley forever - because these guys know birds... they breed them - raise them and love them! And if you have 5 minutes to ask either guy about your bird - they will absolutely tell you everything you will need to know! I can't recommend them enough! read more

I was introduced to Birds Plus by my uncle who loves birds and frequents the store for food, toys, etc.. Ever since, I'll drop in every once in a while because I love to see the huge variety they carry. I've never seen the cages dirty. In fact, every time I'm there the guy--can't recall his name but he always has a smile on his face--is always cleaning cages! I've bought several birds from them and have called on several occasions for advice about care or when a bird was looking sick. Lloyd or Lou always gave me sound advice and saved me from spending $$$ on an avian vet (not to mention saved my bird from undo stress). Today I took a group of kids from my daughter's 4H Club to tour the shop and learn about birds. Lou was great with them. He had them sit on the floor (so they wouldn't drop the baby birds on the ground) and explained just how to hold and touch the birds and then gently handed them one each to hold. It was awesome! The kids were so impressed with the experience (and so were the moms)! I definitely recommend this store to anyone who loves birds! read more

I must recommend Birds Plus to whomever would like to have excellent people take care of their bird. I have been going to them for twenty years and have no complaints. I find them caring, efficient, loving, and full of knowledge about birds; and very SMART!. I also want to warn you about a place called PERFECT PARROT. They do not have the same level of care, knowledge or understanding about birds that they have at Birds Plus. The man at PERFECT PARROT cut off the leg of my bird while grooming it. I was devastated about that, and he almost died because of the blood loss. The man, Peter, who is also the owner, did not tell me what happened, but he did say he would take the bird to the vet, only the appointment was going to be three days from the event, and I did not know the bird lay dying at the bottom of the cage. I should have lifted him up to see what was going on, and then seeing the problem, I could have taken him to the emergency Vets. But I did leave the bird in Peter's hands and the bird did live. Peter did take the bird to the Vet and he paid for the bill. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE YOU BIRD TO BE GROOMED AT PERFECT PARROT, YOU MAY NOT GET YOUR BIRD BACK ALIVE. Nothing like that ever happened at Birds Plus. Also, if I may mention, I have had several Vets recommend Bird Plus to me, but I never had a Vet recommend Perfect Parrot to me. If may be honest and also tell you that Peter's wife, at Perfect Parrot insulted me by saying my bird had mites on his feet. She obviously has had no education, and only goes by her opinion. If someone has had an education they are taught to investigate, test, and evaluate before coming to any conclusions, but she did not do this. I took my bird to Dr. Pitts who said that my bird had a vitamin deficiency and was the cause of the skin irritation. He was correct in his evaluation and diagnosis, because he also tested for mites and there were none. Peter's wife spoke in a very derogatory manner about Dr. Pitts who is the finest Vet in the our area; by making fun of him, and saying he is old and does not know what he is doing, she closed the conversation by lifting herself up above him by saying she knows better than he, Oh Really. I decided to take a chance and go in to Birds Plus even after reading a lot of negative reviews, big mistake. After losing a bird to cancer a few months ago, I decided I might be ready to have another companion bird and this was one of my stops during my visits to all the bird stores in the valley. This store was, by far, the loudest and messiest but the birds seemed to be healthy and happy and the prices are better than many of the competitors. I was charmed by the pretty little conures (my late bird was a conure) and debated whether or not to take one home. Lou, one of the owners, came to my aid and told me I could buy one and if I didn't bond with it or if it didn't work out, he would give me a refund or replace the bird with another. I was taken aback, refund the money? That seemed too good to be true! And it was, I had the little bird for over a week and I quickly became aware that this conure, even though it is a quieter breed of conure was very, very loud. Having owned many birds, I know that they are noisy animals but this wasn't the normal in the morning, when I see you and at bed time noise... it was constant. So I decided to take the bird back before she and I bonded anymore than we had. The other owner that was there was very rude to me and demanded to know all about why I would even bring the bird back and there was absolutely no refunds. I told him I would come back and see Lou. Lou also told me there were no refunds and when I said that was what he told me, he said I must have misunderstood him. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and told him that I would wait for one of the many Senegals he was hand feeding. He told me he would call me at the end of the week. I checked back two weeks later, but the other owner was there and, again, was very rude and told me to just come back and talk to Lou. I came back after another two weeks and asked Lou about the Senegals and he said he didn't have any and that he never had any off season. I reminded him of our previous conversation and he said 'Oh! Those. I sent those to New York.' What??? Why would he send my replacement bird away when he promised me one out of a clutch?? He couldn't have cared less. He told me he had other birds, who all had a conveniently higher price tag. When I relented and said that I would simply take one of the conures that I had already paid for, they acted as though I was insane. I told them that either they had to give me one of the birds I had paid for or give me my money back and only then did they finally give me my bird. The bird they gave me, they simply grabbed and threw in a box without air holes and shoved it at me. It was a horrible experience for me. For those of you that wish to criticize my actions, please, I already know it was not the best series of choices to make on my part but this store made a difficult situation much worse through deceit, greed and hostility. There are better stores in the valley, who actually stand by their word, are cleaner and much nicer. read more

We went to Birds Plus for some bird food for our Eclectus. The guy behind the counter said that colored pellets were great for him. We bought them on his 'Good Word' and fed them to our bird. 2 months later we noticed that his mood had changed and his color was fading fast. We also noticed that he was plucking and chewing on himself. We took our bird TO Birds Plus and showed the same man behind the counter and he said that he looked "Great" but maybe he needs missing vitamins in his diet. He offered us a dietary supplement to add to his water. Well....it was discontinued, but we didnt find that out until we noticed his feathers getting WORSE. We finally went to the "Perfect Parrot" in Studio City area and got him OFF the pellets and BS supplement he had told us to put our bird on and back to a regular diet. I dont recommend this place to anyone who has a bird and loves it like a part of their family. This man made our bird very ill and now we have to take extra care of him to get him back the way he was before Birds Plus entered our lives. We've been going here for over 15 years. Mainly because it was the only parrot store around. Last year I got a bird from them that turned out to be so interbred it has genetic disorders like Heart disease and reproductive disease and its not even 2 yrs old yet! It cost $400 and when I went back the next month they were trying to sell its sibling for $300! I got ripped off on top of it. PLUS their bird food is INFESTED WITH MOTHS! One day after bringing it home. Watch out for their store brand, even though it looks good, Its not! AVOID THIS PLACE. My husband and I visited this store for the first time and will return for all our feathered babies needs. We found more than expected with excellent array of beautiful, healthy, hand fed pet birds of all sizes, dozens of colorful flight birds/finches, and everything needed to care for your feathered friend(s). Louie and another younger gentleman were friendly with no "hard sell" tactics and happy to answer any questions while on the move feeding and cleaning. I was comfortable looking at, talking to, and even touching the birds, I took my time looking over and browsing all the inventory including food and toys before making my selections. If you are a bird lover you will not find anything not to love here and you'll find yourself thinking about when you can return before you even leave. We found the prices far better than chain pet stores prices and even comparable to AMAZON!! RUDE,RUDE,RUDE.....We bought 2 cockatiels from birds plus, when we got home noticed one of the birds favoring one of its legs. We returned to the store the next day to show the owner he said we must have let the bird get hurt and it should be fine in a few days.... The bird never was right. We returned to the store Two more times and we got the same treatment, it must have been something we did. After three months of owning the birds the second bird DROPPED DEAD!!!! in front of us .One second its chirping the next dead i could not believe it never seen anything like it.soooooo back to birds plus. Just like the first time, it must have been something we did..we must have hurt the bird.and to make the traumatic experience worse, the guy who's in charge was an arrogant jerk and was betting me 500 dollars that we hurt the bird. and he would have the bird autopsyed and prove we were lying. He was laughing.........he replaced the still lame first bird but would do nothing for the DEAD BIRD. He took the lame bird and said he would just resell and stuck it back in the cage with all the other birds.....What if the birds had some disease that cause bird 2 to DIE and your just going to pass it on to the next customer....shame on you. BIRDS PLUS SOLD US SICK BIRDS...we purchased 2 cocktails three months ago,by the time we got home bird #1 was favoring its leg so we returned the next day and showed the owner and was told we must have done something to allow the bird to get hurt he told us the bird should be fine in a couple of days...it was never fine we returned to the store 2 more times and got the same treatment. it must have been something we did. After owning the birds for three months bird #2 dropped dead in front of us (my wife, and 2 daughter's never seen anything like it one second chirping the next flopped over dead...very traumatic for a 10 year old girl. just like the first time, It must have been something we did. We must have hurt the bird and to make the traumatic experience worse,the owner was betting me 500 dollars we did something and he would have the bird autopsied and prove that we were lying, He was smiling and laughing while my 10 year old was crying. He took back the still lame bird but would do nothing for the dead bird. He took the lame bird and said he would just sell it to someone else,and we watched him stick it back in the cage with all the other birds! Although this place is hit and miss (depending upon what you are looking for), it's actually a reasonably good store, and I am convinced the birds are well cared for and happy. Is it cluttered? Yes. Is it possible that it is unsightly early in the morning when they have just opened? Yes. Are the owners a little eccentric? Yes, indeed. If any of that is a non-starter for you, go shop at Target or some like place. These guys know birds. They are willing to help you to know birds yourself, if you are respectful and patient. They are willing to get you the bird you want, if you can communicate about what you want and are (again) patient. read more

First of all, the owner was out rightly rude and condescending when he was asked a question. Secondly, the conditions of the establishment are terrible; all the poor birds are cramped in small cages in a very tiny space. I asked the owner how much he wanted for the African Greys and the Macaws and he told me "all those birds are over a thousand dollars."...okay...that didn't exactly answer my question but I let it go. Not 5 minutes later, I asked if the birds could be held, he asked which birds and I said any of the Greys or Macaws...to which he then informs me that all of them are "being boarded, they're all sold."...why the run around? If they were already sold, why not say so from the get go? I asked about a Senegal and he looked at me like I had no clue what I was talking about until I showed him the bird! Best bird store ever! I have been going to Lou and Lloyd for about 8 years , even though I don't live in the area anymore because it's worth it. Recently , I had 3 baby parakeets born at home- one with splayed legs. I brought him in and Lou created a little brace for him which allowed him to grow his legs properly so he could stand. He has his quality life and is playful and healthy. I am so grateful to the care that these guys have for birds and will continue to go to them for all my bird-needs. it's a fun place to browse , too! read more

I have bought my 2 amazing cockatiels from this place. ...but sadly it turned out to be a bad experience! Today, I took my babies (cockatiels) to get their wings ONLY wings clipped !! The owner handled the bird with absolute NO care..he was so tough..i felt like he was gonna hurt or literally choke my birds!! After he was done, I noticed one of my birds' beak bleeding. i asked him and he said that my bird bit him so hard, his beak broke!!! (she is tame and has Never bit anyone!!)..had to take her to the vet. The vet said that the guy had tried to clip my bird's beak!!!! and had hurt her:(( He did this without asking me. Now my bird is on meds and in a lot of pain..I am SO pissed and will never go there again!!!!! read more

Birds Plus is just the best! I have been dealing with Lloyd for over thirty (30) years when he had the storefront on Victory Boulevard. They are honest and most helpful for any matter relating to birds. Lloyd's help on minor bird related problems saved me many a trip to the vet. Plus if you need to travel, you can board your bird there knowing it will be well taken care of. Any reviewer that gives a rating of less than five (5) stars needs a reality check. read more

i love this store! my elderly parents would take their cockteil only there. louie and lyod went out of their way to help them. when both my parents died, i went there for help with the bird. they helped me above and beyond and would tell me stories of my parents and the bird ! i even bought another cockteil and i am so impressed with them that i am going to get another one! read more

Birds Plus has been the least expensive, cleanest care, and the happiest my parrot has returned home outside of my mom pet sitting - and I've boarded my bird with two veterinarians and one other pet shop over the years. I've consulted with the two shop owners for a decade, and always find a great variety of travel and home cages, plus trees, toys and prices, and (free) advice on working with my parrot. They make their own trees, which last forever. I suspect at a few valley and city shops buy from here and sell at double or higher what they paid. I'll recommend you visit to explore, but advise you'll be tempted to leave with something exotic ~ a bird or a cool toy for your bird. read more

This place is simply filthy. I have been in there twice. The first time I noticed that all of the cages were rusty, with dry crusted bird feces on the sides, bottom, and inside the food and water bowls. Some of the water bowls looked like they hadn't been cleaned or filled for weeks. There were insects and moths and mice. I got itchy just being there. I had a question or two about a cage, but the owner couldn't be bothered to even get up from his stool to try to help when I asked, so I left. I went back again a few weeks later to see if they had a small covered seed cup for my canary cage. While waking around the store, I saw a mouse scoot by on the floor. The floor is covered with bird feces, molt feathers, seeds, like no one ever sweeps the floor? The cages were in the same poor condition as my last visit, water bowls filthy, some of the food was simply thrown down on the floor of the cage and the birds walking around in it. I noticed a bird sitting on the bottom of an aviary (filthy aviary) lethargic, looking at the ground, in a word... dying. Very sad indeed. I decided I would not purchase a cage (let alone any bird) from this store, however I needed the seed cup. The price of the seed cup was $4.49. The owner asked me for $5.49 total (tax). As I was exiting the store, I thought, wait a minute here, there is not $1.00 tax on $4.49. I told the owner something was wrong, the price of the seed cup is $4.49 and I was charged too much. He looked up from the stool he was planted on and practically threw .50 cents at me. Another reason for me NOT to go there ever again. These people are just plain lazy and are not concerned about the cleanliness or appearance of this store. On the brighter side, I can highly recommend another store that is the complete opposite, on Sherman Way in Canoga Park, San Fernando Valley, CA. The employees and owners of this Canoga Park store are concerned, have a great selection of everything necessary for birds (as that is all they do, plus they are breeders) they hand-feed all of their birds, and the store is organized and spotless. read more

The best, the very best - I have been coming here for many, many years- we just recently bought my 8 year old son his first bird and I wouldn't have considered going anywhere else. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and helpful - he helped us pick out the perfect pet for my son. I have always purchased my birds here and they have always been healthy. I recently blew it and cut a blood feather on one of our birds, and the owner told me to bring her in - he quickly swooped in and took care of the problem- What a lifesaver!! Great prices on pet products, but I can't give them business anymore. The owner was very nice to me, but AWFUL to my bird. My bird is home today in a lot of pain from a bird trim. I have been getting my birds beak trimmed for years. Today was the first time I took him to Birds Plus. BIG MISTAKE. The owner was so rough with him that I actually contemplated taking my bird to the emergency. I still might unless he starts to feel better. I called my breeder for advice and he thinks that my bird was probably squeezed too hard and might actually have something lodged. While I was at the store just about to pay, I noticed my bird couldnt open one eye. I asked about that, and the owner said "that is normal because we have to hold their faces very hard to trim their beaks" Normal? I have never seen this EVER! He is too rough, and to say that my bird not being able to open his eye is "normal" is NOT OK! read more

I've read a few extremely negative reviews of this store on Yelp and frankly they have a certain suspicious aroma about them. My guess is that certain competitors of this store might have instigated these hit pieces. My experience with this store has been good. The store has been in business for over 25 years in the same location, I believe, and it is highly unlikely they could have remained in business so long if they didn't have quite a few satisfied customers. I didn't buy my bird from them but their birds appear healthy and are fairly priced. I did buy a cage from them and I would say that they have the best selection of cages & accessories in the L.A. area and their prices are lower than many competitors. They have the largest bird boarding operation in the entire greater Los Angeles area - that I'm aware of. That means that a lot of people trust them to take care of their pet, including the owners of some very expensive birds. I have never been ignored nor subjected to high pressure sales tactics - as one reviewer claims the owners do simultaneously, as if that makes any sense. Overall I would rate Birds Plus as an excellent place for bird buyers or owners to shop. read more

Recently my wife and kids bought a 7 week old cockateil. They wanted to feed train and eventually mate this bird with one of our five cockateil. I have raise and hand feed birds most of my life and have a Biology degree. When I got home they showed me a sickly bird. The bird ate well but its coloring and energy level was not good. After a week the bird died. My kids were devestated. Birds Plus blame them for over feeding even though we followed the instructions. They told me to bring in the bird so they can examine the body. I brought them the frozen body and gave them my observation. Then they gave me the run around. They told me I should have brought the bird and have no garantee for birds that young. So why did they have me drive so far. My wife and I work full time. They ask me to bring back a dead bird and then make excuses to to issue credit. I did not ask for credit or another bird. As a long time patron who loves birds and hve bought thousands of dollars in bird supplies toys and cages, do not patronize Birds Plus. As you walk in the place is run down and the clutch of birds are packed in small cages on the floor. See for yourself. I picked up a bird off the floor when I walked in. The bird was beat up and was growing feathers in the injured area. I told the owners ass I picked up the bird. He just said, "They jump around all the time." They don't care about their product. First of all allow me to relay the fact that I am a long time 'bird person'. I have kept and raised parrots for twenty years, breed and currently have 18 in my flock. I am also a business professional in the hospitality business and because of that have moved pretty constantly across country with my brood. Over the years I've seen dozens of pet stores, bird emporiums, specialty shops and others. When I spent four years in the valley I quickly discovered Bird's Plus. It was handy. More importantly, it carried the items and brands I wanted and needed to care for the multi specied flock at home. In reviewing the other reviews posted here let me say this. Yes the building is old. Lou and Lloyd own the building. It's large, suits the purpose and is rent free, so they are able to minimize their pricing. Juan does a good job keeping up with the cleaning and the feeding, but the cages are old. The store is very well laid out contrary to some suspect comments from one or two other posters. Lou breeds many species himself and has for many years. He successfully bred Grey cheeks in flocks and anyone who is in the know realizes how specialized that undertaking was. He breeds Barrabands. I purchased a hen from him and she is doing quite fine and a sweetie. He breeds Senegals and I purchased a little cock who is a light in my life. Lou is very knowledgeable, way more than many of the untrained personnel I encountered at other bird establishments in the area. He has experience with every avian vet in the city and can tell you who to trust and who to avoid. As far as the comment concerning the Eclectus, well that is indeed suspect. There are available special pelleted eclectus diets which I know that Bird's Plus stocks. That Lou would not have recommended that is ridiculous. As far as comparing an establishment like Bird's Plus with some other glitzier emporium selling stock, well I also happened to have purchased a beautiful apricot headed caique hen from one of Lou's competitors. She was sold to me with avian polyoma and within a month she had passed despite the best efforts of Dr. Worrell. Boutique like environments mean nothing.
