I've been coming to this location since it was called Bird Crazy under a different owner. It has down sized since then. However, the staff knows a ton about birds and there is a good selection of birds for sale, birds food and toys. It's location off of Clairemont Mesa BLVD which is behind a Denny's. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because you can get a refund on a bird purchase. So if you bring one back, even if it's within a few days, you can only have store credit. read more

This place has really gone downhill. It's dark, dingy, and I didn't like the way they handled my bird. I felt terrible after I left, like I watched my bird get traumatized... they just handled him rough and not very smooth. It took her a while to get him in and out of the cage and was just forceful.. Don't get me wrong I know how it is getting birds to cooperate, but this just seemed particularly unprofessional. I used to come here back when it was Bird Crazy and never felt like this. I honestly don't know what happened to BirdSmart last few months. I used to bring my two birds for grooming all the time because they use to have a such nice environment for the birds on the open space, clean and the birds used to look happy and they used to have a extremely nice young lady who my birds adored her when we went there for grooming and unfortunately she no longer works there. Also,last week I noticed not only that place went down hell and looks horrible,they filled the place with crap and all the birds looks unhappy and locked up on the cages which now looks overcrowded and dirty. The new people doing the grooming sounded very all business and don't seem to care about the people's or the birds they groom. Not friendly at all. I will no longer take my birds there. I don't mind that they raised their prices on grooming because that's normal. However raising the price and downgrading the quality of services and downgrading how you care for your costumer or how to care for the birds you sell is not acceptable to me. I didn't need to bring my birds there but I used to drive over 30 miles just because of the care quality they used to have until last few months. Is very sad to see how BirdSmart got so bad. My birds now will go somewhere else for their grooming and needs. Just a tip I give to BirdSmart! If you want costumers to return you will have to try bringing your old business model back. Meaning... learn that how you treat the birds in your care and how you speak and treat your costumers who drive over 30 miles just to groom their birds matters. FYI! You didn't do anything wrong but you ignored your costumers needs and sounded annoyed doing your job. And as a bird mom I don't want to bring my feathered babies there anymore. I have been to a lot of bird stores in my life and I have seen the worst. I even rescued a bird from Bird hell in Ocean Beach.... when we trained the bird to be friendly enough to step up, we donated the bird to Birdsmart in the hopes that they could find him a better home. It only took about a month and they had already found him a solid and has been there ever since. Every one of my five cockatiels has come from Birdsmart, I don't know what it is about this place but every bird is so affectionate and it can't be a coincidence that all five of my birds were affectionate from day one, because of the way they are handled as babies. I would 100% recommend the store to anybody who wants and affectionate and loving bird. BUT you need to ask them if the bird you were looking at has had a previous owner, because birds That have had previous owners are often stuck in old habits that are very hard to fix. The people that work there are very passionate about birds and do their best to correct bad behavior. To sum it up, if i had anymore room in my house for more birds, you know I would adopt another bird from this loving establishment. ...Going down the list and reading some reviews, it just seems like I'm getting half the story, like the dying finches. Wouldn't you know that the finches are experiencing respiratory issues especially two weeks before they die? That doesn't just happen overnight. I can't wrap my head around some of the things I read about this place since I have been a repeat customer for years and will continue to be. I can't stand when people that are uneducated decide they are some sort of critic going around critiquing businesses like you know how to run a business more efficiently. If you're thinking of buying a CAGE, DO NOT get it through these ding dongs. I came in on April 1st (maybe thats why I had a bad experience #aprilfoolsday)to order a cage. They told me it would arrive April 11th, which was only 10 days away. Obviously I was excited. I called on April 11th to see if the cage came in and the lady on the phone said no, however it would be there on April 12th no matter what. April 12th comes, I go to the store to pick up my cage that was "going to be there no matter what" and it wasn't there. Something about someone being sick. I cant quite remember the excuse they used. They said it would be in this time NO MATTER WHAT (ha.) the next day (the 13th). I show up on April 13th, the next day, hoping for a cage that was going to be there no matter what and guess what. No cage. These idiots had not only lost my order, but they couldnt even find the receipt that I had already paid for this cage?! I asked for the owner (Apparently some ding dong named Jenny) to call me the next day and after 3 days, I hadnt heard from the owner. So after being fed up with these unprofessional bird breeders (which I dont think they should be) I came in to get a refund. The lady who helped me was nice, just an employee, but she had said "Oh, Jenny had told me the last time you had talked to us you were going to wait." Oh good. Now the owner is not only making things up, but didnt even call me to even discuss this whole matter. Long story short, I wouldnt support this business as far as I could throw it. At the end of the day it was a cage. That's it. Just a cage and they couldnt get that right. Good luck every one out there that attempts to work with these unorganized people. read more

This is my favorite bird store. The birds are very well cared for and we get all our supplies here. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Quite frankly you won't find a better store for your avian needs. If by chance there is something they dont have they can tell you were to get it, though I've yet to come across anything . The people are amazing i just cant say enough good things about them. I also read most of the other reviews and some, especially the worst of them make no sense. Selling sick birds? NO WAY. One complained about not being able to get her you sign paperwork stating no returns and store credit only. Not only do you sign the paper work but the employees tell you this. I went to birdsmart two months ago to buy a pair of parakeets. supposedly they were hand fed and paid $60 more per bird. These birds were mean and vicious and we couldn't even get close to the cage without them biting and chirping. I called birdsMart to see if we could exchange them and purchase a more expensive bird and they would not even do so! I would've spent $20 on parakeets that weren't hand fed instead of $80 that were. I brought my bird here because we got evacuated from our home during the San Marcos Fire. What a group of wonderful and caring people! Not only that, but the gentleman at the cash register owns a Molluccan cockatoo. He gave me some tips on how to help my Molluccan stop plucking. And although I've owned my bird for 24 years, he just started plucking about 2 years ago and I thought I had tried everything. He suggested that I do some things that I had not thought of or read about before, and I'm going to start using his suggestions right away. To top that off, my bird was there from Wednesday through Saturday, and they only charged me 3 dollars because I was evacuated. That's right, you read that right, only three dollars. Normally, they charge $10 a day. But they don't apparently normally charge you for the day you drop your bird off. Not only are they helpful, but they're also extremely nice! Do not buy anything from this store. The people here are a bunch of crooks. They don't know anything about birds and will say anything to sell you their stock. I purchased a red factory canary and was assured that it would sing but it didn't. This was a very old bird that is sickly, but the employee lied to me and said that it's a young bird and was molting and just needed time to recover. These people know that their bird was not good and yet they still sold it to me. This store has no ethics and does not care about their customer. I paid $250 for a defective bird and when I asked to exchange it for a healthy singing male canary I was denied and the manager named Tara refused to help. I even offered to pay extra in addition to the exchange, but Tara still refused to help. She told me that the bird could be a female and that females don't sing. Oh my god! I asked for a male canary and thats what I thought I purchased and now she tells me that it's not a male! If I knew this in the beginning I wouldn't have made the purchase. No one at this store is able to take responsibility for their action. Don't believe anything that these people say. They make like their your friend and will say anything that you want to hear, but once you give them your hard earned money you mean nothing to them. Customer service is equivalent to feces. I can't believe that I gave this store so much business in the past and this is how they reward my loyalty. I ended up donating the defective red factory canary back to this store and I lost my $250. No they straight up stole my money. I ended up shelling out another $250 for another canary to replace my defective one and I didn't even get a discount. I will never step foot into this store again. I'm taking my business somewhere else. Everyone at this store especially Tara can go f*ck themselves. Be warned. First time coming here. I called ahead of time in search of a budgie and the Mckenna (I'm not sure if that's right) was very happy to help me over the phone. My husband and I came in not too long after she told me they have one budgie ready to go home and a bunch of babies! After we arrived she showed us all the budgies and talked to us about any other questions or interests we had. She was knowledgeable and helped us immensely. We went home with the adorable yellow budgie they had and he is doing great his first day home with us! I cant wait to see his personality really unfold and see if he will be friendly with our other budgie. They've been next to each other all day and seem to really enjoy each others company so far. They have a great selection of seed mixes, pellets, nut mixes, and toys (both durable and destructible). Sometimes the employees will even let you have a few treats to feed the parrots if you ask nicely. They have a nursery near the entrance, which you can always look into and see the cute little babies. They've also got many of their best-behaved birds out on perches for anyone to interact with. Sometimes the employees will bring in their own birds, too. If you're thinking of buying a bird from here, it comes with free wing and nail trimmings for life. My macaw still hates getting them, but the staff are experts at safely immobilizing him and working quickly. It's definitely worth it. Also, their $10/day boarding is unbeatable, especially if you've got a friendly bird who would enjoy interacting with other people while out on a perch. They've got quite the selection, with every kind of bird from budgies to toucanets. My husband and I recently purchased a beautiful Blue-fronted amazon parrot from this store and we couldn't be more thankful for the amazing help that was offered to us. The owner of the store was very accommodating and worked with us to ensure that the parrot we chose would be a great addition to our family. She truly wanted our newest family member to be in a great home and I feel that you just can't get that in a large bird store chain. Our Blue-fronted is incredibly sweet, she lets us pick her up without any biting at all, this to me shows the love she received while being in the store. We also brought in our Yellow-headed amazon to get groomed for the first time since we picked up our little blue front and the experience was great. We did have to wait about ten minutes but that is just because there were so many other people that knew about the great grooming service. The owner gave us great advice on wing clipping and we could definitely tell that she new what she was doing because our little Yellow-headed amazon didn't squirm or make a fuss, which is most definitely uncharacteristically like him. That is a HUGE! Very Excellent Grooming! All in all we are truly happy that we walked into the store and was able to meet the wonderful owner who really cared about the birds in her store. We bought a baby cockatiel back in January and this shop really does know its birds. However, the reason we purchased from this shop is that they promised free nail and wing trimming for the life of our bird. The promised us this verbally and it was also a selling point on their website. Today when I went in for a trim, the same owners told me that they have a new policy and no longer trim for free. The owner said today she would trim my bird today for free (as if she was doing me a favor!), but moving forward it would be $10 a visit. I take this as a classic bait and switch and I won't step foot in that store again. We would drive down from North County and really enjoyed returning back to see all the birds, but that is just poor business ethics. We won't be back. read more

I had the most horrible experience with their boarding facility !!!! When I picked my bird up the cage was filthy, bottom tray was broken, and my bird had no food. There was no food or water in the feeding dishes; just a large stale biscuit in the seed container. Worse of all when I took my bird out, he stood there silently with his head down like he was neglected. The feeding dishes were so dirty with grime, which led me to believe that the dishes were not cleaned on a daily basis. Half of the bird seed and pellets I left to feed my bird were still in the feeding container. My bird was boarded for a month. I contacted the manager, and she did not handle my complaint in a professional manner, and made no attempt to try to remedy the situation. The staff members have also said negative things about the previous owner. All this reflects negatively on the management of this establishment. read more

I have been coming to this store since I was a kid(when it was bird crazy). There is nothing more interesting then being face to face with an exotic and beautiful creature that can be transformed into your best buddy. I've known Ginny and the manager and they are extremely fair and nice individuals. I have read some of the reviews and I want people to understand that a bird is not like a dog. Most of the larger birds need time to adapt and training. Not everyone can go up and pet a bird. With smaller birds this is definitely possible. My point is, do not be angry at this store if you get a bird that doesn't like you as they may sometimes be picky on their owners. These are very very smart birds and if you see sometimes that the birds aren't lively, well they are tired or in a mellow mood. It's as simple as that. There is also the thought of multiple people or kids stressing out the birds from their actions. This is coming from a bird owner that has owned almost every type from smallest to largest bird hookbill species wise. The birds they have are lovely and I have been a happy customer for years. This is a business, so do not forget that they must uphold policies. You are not buying a mattress, you are getting a companion. You will know what I mean once you go in there and talk to any of the staff. Warm and welcoming. I have been to this store a few times and after today, I will never come back again. I took my bird in to get groomed and it was an awful experience. I have worked with birds in retail for years and the whole situation was not handled well. The store had a young girl there with short hair who held my bird in a towel while her assistant left for several minutes to answer a phone call, where is your additional staff to grab the phone or couldn't you ask the person on the phone to hold? The reason grooming is supposed to be quick is because birds can easily overheat! Her wings were cut too short and I was disappointed at the selection of supplies. The newspapers hadn't looked like they were clean for days. The store was dirty and I regret going to the store out of convenience . I have never had an experience above mediocre in this store. I will travel out of my way to go to Omar's Exotic Birds or Our Feathered Friends. It would also be in your best interest to search elsewhere for a bird. Their birds are generally grossly overpriced. Also, it should be a HUGE red flag when a place that has animals doesn't allow pictures inside of it. What are they afraid of? If you want to board your bird here, they do not let customers view the boarding area!! Who would trust anyone or any store to keep their bird without showing them their boarding area? If you're looking for toys, this place is alright. I've purchased bags of seeds littered with bugs before they were opened... If you're buying birds, be wary and get them checked by a vet immediately. I've purchased 3 hand tamed budgies from here and 2 of them were ill. Brought them to the vet numerous times but they died within 2 months. Facilities are dirty and the birds are kept in close quarters, its a disease factory. Ever since the new owners have taken over I am greatly pleased with my weekly trips there. There grooming is amazing and they know exactly how to care for my Hyacinth. They truly care about there customers and there birds. My bird has been boarded there and the boarding room is well kept and the cages are spotless. He loves the owner so much I think he wouldn't mind staying there. I highly recommend this store obviously my birds very rare and I completely trust them with him. Great selection of seed and nuts.
