My six-year-old son and I brought an injured baby squirrel to this place. We detailed how the squirrel fell from a Hawks beak flying overhead and onto the ground. We were told that they will try the nurse squirrel back to health and release it back to our street. Thag baby Hawks are on its way and this squirrel will help nourish them. I'm so many words.... I called Project Wildlife on a Tuesday at 6:45 PM because I saw a crow or raven sitting in a gutter of my neighborhood for a few hours, not moving (but still alive). I called and the woman on the phone was so nice. She asked me a bunch of questions about the bird and my location, then she educated me that it was probably a fledgling, explaining that they are often awkward and don't know where to land, so the bird is probably fine and getting to know the world. Turns out she must've been right because once I got a certain distance of closeness to the bird, it finally flew away! I apologized because I felt like I bothered them for nothing, but she said she was glad I called, and said it was better to call than not! She thanked me, and that was really nice. They call it project wildlife I guess their policy is to take completely perfectly healthy animals in only? But if you've heard what's been in the news you know what happens to these animals, very scary, So I called around/help/care/ for a raven that I found has a leg injury, call a few different facilities in San Diego and Project Wildlife and the other places that I called all confirmed that it is Project Wildlife's policy "to take the life" of animals who are needing some care, They will make up their excuses why they don't want to put any time or energy into saving animals lives, they will make up the excuse that the animal was worse off, etc but it's all just laziness, They just euthanize so this is a "Euthanizing Center" They also do this for cats and dogs, This is a Euthanizing Facility. They're going to put a comment here saying that they do great things and they save animals but they don't save animals It is not their POLICY. It's very disturbing. read more

I had the pleasure and honor to have been taken on a tour of Project Wildlife Facility. They are a first rate facility located in Ramona with a deep love for animals. Both the tour guides I had were extremely nice and knowledgeable and people we can across were happy to be there. Racoons were my favorite (the masked monkeys). Even the animals seemed happy to be there. The campus has a Hospital and beautiful office. The enclosures were made comfortable for the animals during their rehabilitation stay. These guys are great. For some reason in the last six weeks I have come across two sick birds and i took them here. Both were in bad shape, the first was a crow i thought might be able yo be saved. But i asked about his outcome when i took the pigeon in. Turns out, he had a disease that was treatable but he was past the point of being able to be treated. I took a pigeon in and he was clearly going to die. They told me right away that the bird needed to be euthanized. I am an animal lover and it is hard to see animals suffer. Taking sick animals here to be euthanized is really the most humane way. They have tons of animals they save and bring back to health so i am not saying they only euthanize animals here. However, it was comforting for me to have these animals euthanized rather than see them continue to suffer. Keep providing this service guys. read more

Thank God for Project Wildlife and their quick response to a baby pigeon that was too young to survive on its own and had fallen out of the nest. Just checked up on an animal that we had left at Project Wildlife who had leg damage. He was completely alert and fine but simply could not jump due to his legs. I called this afternoon and they said they euthanized him. I have a feeling that they euthanize most of the animals unless they have super minor injuries that don't require much work or unless the animals are very exotic animals. The animal I brought in could have been saved with some extra help and work but I don't think they saw the value in saving a small wild bunny with leg issues. I don't recommend bringing any animals that have small injuries here as they will most likely euthanize. It may be best to only bring animals that are past the point of care and need to be euthanized to relieve them from pain. In any other case you may as well just leave the animal in a safe space in the wilderness because taking it to the project wildlife drop off is already very scary for the animal as they can sense the many other dead animals in the room. May as well leave them in their natural habitat and not put them through more trauma. Don't recommend taking bunnies or any other small animals here as they will likely be euthanized. read more

We found a injured bird being attacked by crows outside of my office and wanted to help but did not know what to do. After entering a google search for "what do to when you find an injured bird", the Project Wildlife website came up and we are sooooo glad it did! First we got the very helpful hotline, and then we were able to get ahold of a volunteer. Keep in mind this was at 7:30pm. These volunteers are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and dedicated to helping the unfortunate wildlife that find themselves in dire straits. I am SO thankful that San Diego has a place like this for the public to take injured wildlife. I brought in 4 baby skunks that I found under my car. I called for an update on the babies and the person on the phone said they were released back into the wild a few weeks later. I also found what I thought was an injured bird near my home and thought Project Wildlife might be able to help it. I called their dispatch number to see if they would take it, and dispatch nicely explained to me that the bird was actually a fledgling learning how to fly and was not actually injured. Not only was the bird fine, but it saved me from driving all the way down there and stressing this poor bird out. We recently helped a hurt crow we found in our community. We brought the crow to this location. The staff was super friendly and thankful. We were very comfortable leaving the hurt crow in their hands. If you don't want to wait to bring a hurt or abandoned animal in the morning, when they open, they have an outdoor, closed area with several animal pens inside where you can leave the animal. Their volunteers visit a few times in the night to check if someone brought an animal for care. We were happy that we were able to help the little guy. read more

About three weeks ago, we had a finch crash into our front window despite the "Window Alert" decals that are supposed to prevent this stuff from happening. The bird seemed in pretty bad shape, but we spent about 45 minutes making sure he (I'm guessing) was still alive ... it's weird that birds will oftentimes stun themselves and you can almost nudge them back to life. It's so depressing to have a little creature like that die on you! Anyhow, the bird appeared to have a broken wing or leg, and we were shocked that Project Wildlife was willing to take the little guy to help him. The man who answered the phone was surprisingly empathetic ... I mean, how many of these calls do they get each day and they still act as though your situation is very important?! Very impressive! When we arrived at their site, the girl at the counter was also concerned and helpful. We filled out a little form and gave a donation for their services ... they run their excellent service with the help of these types of donations. Although they did say they'd email me with how he did, I haven't yet heard anything ... I don't fault them for that though as they have their able hands full. As an aside, while we were there, a guy brought in an injured baby bunny that must have been under his car when he backed out. The bunny was covered in blood and the guy thought he had lost a paw ... I probably would have fainted if I had to pick up the bunny like he did. Anyway, it was at that moment when I knew I had a new favorite charity ... 5/18/2014 Came in again :] A family member caught a bird from the backyard that acted strange. This bird just doesn't fly off when you approach. We weren't sure if it was sick or not. When I brought the bird in to Project Wildlife I got a surprise. Low and behold, it wasn't a wild bird at all. Someone must have lost a pet bird. No wonder it looked like one of those fancy birds from PetSmart! The volunteer gave me really clear directions to take the bird to the Humane Society, which was just a few blocks away. The Project Wildlife volunteer was very helpful even though he said they couldn't take the bird. The bird is now safe at the Humane Society. ^_^ 4/20/2014 I brought in a baby skunk today. I found the poor kit alone and on the side of the road with no momma nearby. I have no doubt it is in very good hands because I've been a volunteer for them before at the main care center. :] They have a high patient survival and release rate. I was greeted at the door by two female volunteers who were very smiley. :D One of the female volunteers was talking to me about the form I needed to fill out to drop the skunk off when a male volunteer swoops by and takes my bag (with skunk inside) away. I try to say something to him as he's walking away, but he only turns back once to glance at me and continues walking quickly away. I understand skunks are a rabies vector, but rabies is not airborne and it doesn't matter how fast you walk away! It was just plain rude! Tell me what you are doing before you run off like that. I was in disbelief. I ask him questions when he gets back and he answers my questions with an expression of what looked like annoyance. I had more questions, but the look he gave me made me leave. :( They are the people to take injured, orphaned, and sick wildlife to. The dedicated volunteers do amazing things! :D I just wish I didn't run into a volunteer that was so rude to me! Treat the animals, but please don't be discourteous to the people who bring the animals to you. read more

It's run mostly by volunteers (& some staff), and they work very hard to help & care for wildlife, making it possible for them to be put back into the wild. I think it's great we have Project Wildlife in general to help wildlife. I found a little baby bird in my driveway that was clearly hurt but opening it's mouth to eat, poor baby didn't even have it's eyes open. I struggled with what to do but there was no way I could let it sit there and suffer so I decided to take it to Project Wildlife on an early Sunday morning. It's nice that they have varied hours I feel like if I had to wait too much longer the little guy would have suffered. I came in with my little baby bird and they girl behind the counter was nice, not super nice but friendly enough. I wish they would have told me if I did the right thing by bringing the baby bird in or not. They don't give you any details at all, just say thanks. I would have appreciated it if they said next time it's better to just leave it or let you call them to get an update on the animal but at least I felt better about not watching the poor thing suffer in my driveway. read more

This organization is amazing. I've been taking wildlife to them for years, mostly birds. I urge everyone to step up when they see a sick or injured animal, with care of course or by calling PW in hopes that they have the staff or volunteers to come to the scene or can advise you on what to do. What a great place!! They are open 24hrs a day in order to rescue wildlife, and the staff are all incredible! I've had two occasions to bring in birds this month. Today's however, was the most exciting. I had found a little parrot half dead in the street today. So I wrapped him in my sweat shirt and drove him to Project Wildlife. He wasn't looking good, but I could see he was still breathing. I was about a block away from Project Wildlife when I decided to uncover the parrots head and see if he was still alive. As soon as I did, he sprang to life and flew onto the dash! I had visions of getting bit on the cheek and crashing into a wall. Instead, the little guy flew down beneath my feet. (Switching to visions of him biting down on my toe and crashing). He the proceeded up UNDER the dash board. Damn! I pulled up to Project Wildlife and told them I needed help. They sent Emily who maybe shoulda been at comic con because she is a super hero! Without hesitation she got on the ground and stuck her arm blindly up under the dash looking for the bird. She had to ditch the heavy protective gloves she was wearing in order to facilitate the capture. I thought for sure that either the parrot was going to end up living in the dash or Emily was going to be bitten, or both. But Emily was able to catch that little rascal and they both made it out mostly unscathed (minus a few tail feathers). Please, if you find and injured wild animal, take them to Project Wildlife. I volunteered here last weekend and I learned so much about Project Wildlife and what they do. Any organization that saves and protects animals of any kind gets an A+ in my book. Some animals they save can be rehabilitated to be released back into the wild...and others cannot, so they become ambassadors. I am very happy to support this organization. read more

I am certainly biased, as I am a volunteer here. However, that said, I am immensely proud to be associated with this fine organization. Their success rate of rehabbing birds and small mammals is higher that the national average, which speaks highly of their practices. As a volunteer, we get training, can be paired with a seasoned volunteer if it's been a while. They have a quiet, covered patio with heated cages for animals to be left after hours. The paid staff members are kind, helpful and are obviously the quiet support to the volunteers. Everyone works well together, the dedication to the cause by both volunteers and paid staff is obvious. EVERY time I have volunteered (sometimes I can only come for an hour or so), I am thanked, and my service is genuinely appreciated. They make a point to value volunteers, which means the birds and animals benefit, since everyone likes to be appreciated. Their intake is seamless, an easy process that can be learned in minutes. I found one interesting caveat. If I've had a bad day, or am tired, frustrated, whatever....I come here. An hour or so later, feeding baby birds and cleaning their cages, my mood is lifted and energy restored. What more can a human ask for? Thank you to everyone who brings animals in. I remember one man brought in 22 swallows, as their nests were destroyed by maintenance staff (they thought the nests were bad for the building. WHAT?!?) He was part of the staff, and did the right thing by bringing them in. Yah for PW, and YAH for saving animals. Isn't that what life is about? read more

Yesterday I found an injured morning dove on my patio who's legs looked broken. So I called the Humane Society and was directed to Project Wildlife. I carefully boxed her up and drove down to their local office and luckily found them still open, but they also have after-hours drop-off. The gal inside was very friendly and took the bird right in, telling me her spine (not her legs) was most likely injured from flying into my sliding glass door. She said she'd keep her comfortable with meds and that it was possible she'd recover but possibly not. Either way she said she'd email me and let me know what happened. I found an injured dove while I was out walking our pug, so I texted my girlfriend who was back in the house knowing that together we'd figure something g out. I knew I'd not be able to rest easy if I just left him there. So we started calling around and just as it seemed that every place we called would point us somewhere else: we found Project Wildlife. We had put him in a shoebox and got some dove food from Pet smart along the way and finally got to the PW Headquarters. They have an awesome little porch with cages for each kind of animal each having its own heating pad to keep the little guys warm until the volunteers get there. We took two seemingly healthy orphaned bunnies here after calling project wildlife and being advised to bring them in. When we dropped them off, we were reassured it was the right thing to do and they would be cared for. I called about a week later to check how they were doing and was informed that they were euthanized. When I asked why, the lady told me "they weren't able to survive" and then rushed me off the phone without giving me anymore information as to why. Have some orphaned opossums in our tree crying/squeaking for several days, no mother in sight, they refused to come out because they do not have resources for this?! I am so amazed that I dont even know where to begin. I found a baby bird in the pool in our complex, he couldnt get out. I felt that there was something wrong with him because he didnt fly away after I got him out. I took him to Project Wildlife. The following day Irith called to say she was going to bring him back to find his parents. She was on her day off. She was here about 3 hours but she found the parents and they took him back. At Christmas time in 2012 I found an injured Hawk behind my house and brought it to them and I was so grateful that someone - anyone - could something - anything - for this poor magnificent creature. So far so good. I found a baby bunny in my back yard that had a broken leg dragging behind it. So After debating a few minutes I scooped up the baby carefully and wrapped it in a towel and put it in a box. I asked my staff to take the bunny down to Project Wildlife for hopes of rehabilitation, and they asked for my email to keep me updated on the little guy... We named it Hop! Last time I took an injured animal it was a squirrel, and the rescue I took it to the people were not friendly and acted as if the squirrel was an inconvenience. So as I said so far so good! I really hope they do update me on Hop, my daughter was devastated to see it go. But I know the chances of it surviving are slim, and the fact the Project Wildlife is able to increase its chances gives them an A in my book! read more

I brought a Grosbeak with a broken wing into a veterinarian. As I'm not allowed to rehab a wild bird they suggested I bring it here. I did and made donation in line with the cost of a vet exam. Called a couple of weeks later to see how it was doing. They had euthanized it. read more

Our cat got ahold of a bird and the bird ended up with a broken wing. We dropped by and after filling out a little paperwork they took her right in. Also gave my mother in law a form so she can get updates on the recovery. There were tons of animals being taken care of and drop off kennels for animals if they are closed. We made a small donation because you can see they are really taking care of those animals. read more

I volunteered at this establishment years ago(2004). It was always run correctly and humanly. The place always did things safely and treated all the animals with extreme care. The employees and volunteers would also spend their free time going to great lengths to pick up wildlife in special situations for care. I cant even imagine a place better than project wildlife. read more
