Today was a business lunch day. We decided to try Bistro 1940 as we both felt like having a sandwich. We were interested because of the old town location. A great perk for this place is free street parking right in front. The front entrance is in an old strip mall. The inside is well done. Plenty of seating throughout. There's a nice lounging area, outdoor seating, high top tables, large standard tables and a bar area. They have a fairly simple menu, but plenty of variety. They do offer alcohol, THC beverages, sodas, smoothies, and of course coffee. After a few minutes of looking over the menu we ordered a coupe of the artisan sandwiches, a couple coffees, and a slice of coconut cream cake! You order at the kiosk and they bring your food & beverages to you. After a nice wait (not too fast or long), our americano, latte, waters, The Rad sandwich, The Chrissy sandwich, with our sides of pasta and potato salad. The sandwiches were honestly the perfect size for us. Both sandwiches were great and the coffee was good. Initially I requested a red eye, but they were out of drip coffee. Not a big deal, the americano was good. The coconut cream cake was huge and delicious! Not sure, but I tasted a hint of amaretto, vanilla, and coconut. Delicious! Went well with the coffee! Although the cost was a little high, the quality of service, food and atmosphere compensated. We will definitely eat here again. Recommend giving Bistro 1940 a try. read more

Good food, kind of hipster vibe, a little overpriced. We like trying new places and support local businesses over chains when we can. This has the vibe of little bistro coffee shops we find in many large cities with a limited menu and lots of coffee options. They had both a soda fountain and bottled/caned soft drinks. However, neither the fountain nor the cans and bottle had any ZERO products. I ordered a Mikey, an Italian style heated sandwich on an Italian style roll. The bread was good and everything on it was tasty. It was a good sandwich. But for the price I could have had a much larger sandwich at Jersey Mike's wing more meats and veggies. It always seems that places trying to be cool skimp on odd things. Like lettuce is cheap but there was very little on the sandwich. My wife had a turkey sandwich on ciabata bread. She liked her sandwich too. We both got potato salad which was good but bit heavy on the pins for my wife. It was fine for me but I wanted pepper and I could not see any easily accessible and didn't feel like asking for it (that's on me). Our bill with a modest tip for two sandwiches, potato salad sides that were included a fountain drink and a mango slurp (they called it a smoothie but it wasn't) was $45.00. That's just too much for a simple lunch, at least for us. read more

Wanted to give this spot a try because it's one of few things in town that's not a regular chain restaurant/bar. It's downtown Jacksonville where there's been a lot of new things popping up. This is big welcome addition. They are open for breakfast lunch and have a small bar with special cocktails. I got a build your own sandwich which was so good.. boats head meats on croissant and side of pot salad.. both were very good. I'd much rather spend my money here than at a fast food place! Staffs very nice and helpful in making choices. It's really cute inside. Few tables inside and nice outside seating on side of it. Hot new spot that brings a much needed business to downtown Jacksonville. I stopped in on a a Tuesday afternoon around 12-1pm. It was decently busy, but service was fast and efficient. There's cute areas to sit and wait, along with high top tables, and even an outdoor sitting patio. The interior is beautifully decorated. I ordered The Chrissy. The sandwich came out fresh and delicious. I chose chips as my side but they have other sides, such as the homemade potato salad, which I was able to taste and it was soooo good! Having moved back from VA almost a month ago bestie and I have spent our weekends eating, geocaching, shopping and laughing around eastern NC. She found this spot for us and we found it newly opened & busy but not so busy we couldn't get a table. We both ordered the Monty Cristo with my sandwich coming with potato salad. I know it's a simple ham & cheese creation on a croissant but it was fresh tasting & the raspberry jam the perfect dip to offset the ham. I generally don't like restaurant potato salad because it is never as good as mine or my mama's. Marty (one of the owners) stopped by to ask us how everything was going. This is the kind of service that leaves an impression. Enough of one that makes you want to return. The restroom was clean & fully stocked. I knew we would be back and we did, thid late Friday evening. Bestie had a create your own croissant but & I stayed with the Marty Cristo. Still delicious and made me kinda happy that our 1st spot was too busy. Marty again stopped by and joined us for a lovely chat. He told us his wife didn't care for his stopping to chat with everyone I made sure to tell Marty that his stopping to visit makes me want to give him even more of hubby's money. For me, the atmosphere & attentiveness is almost as important as the food. So, I commend him for stopping to chat. It makes more of a difference than most folks realize. This new bistro in Jacksonville is an absolute gem! I visited with my mom and we had such a great experience. We each ordered a sandwich with chips and a side salad. I chose the Caprese salad--it was perfectly fresh and paired beautifully with my sandwich. My mom got the house salad with raspberry vinaigrette, and it was so well-balanced--it let the fresh veggies be the star. Marty and Myra, the owners, personally welcomed us and even took time to chat while we waited. Sarah helped us pick out the perfect meal and everything came out quickly, fresh, and full of flavor. The bistro also offers a great variety of coffee, food, and smoothies. Plus, the outdoor seating area is lovely--I'm already looking forward to coming back when they start hosting live music. 5/5 - A Hidden Gem You Don't Want to Miss We finally made it over to 1940 Bistro in downtown Jacksonville,-- and wow, this place blew us away. From the second we walked in, we were taken aback by how beautiful the space is. It's got this clean, modern vibe with cozy touches that make you want to hang out for hours. You can tell a lot of thought went into the design, and it just feels good to be there. But let's talk about the food -- because that's where it really shines. We tried The Rad and the Que Sera Sera, and both were absolutely incredible. We customized the Que Sera Sera with goat cheese and Ruz Château, and it was hands down one of the best sandwiches we've had in a long time. The flavors were unique, balanced, and clearly made with quality ingredients. Everything from the atmosphere to the service to the food was completely on point. On top of that, they offer catering, which is perfect if you're planning an event or just want to treat your office to something way better than the usual takeout. The service was excellent and the owners are very friendly. Had the meatballs for a late snack, were excellent great flavors. Also had a Banana Walnut Chia tea, very tasty. The Marty Cristo with a jelly sauce is the best. The price is excellent. I will visit there again. Very relaxing establishment. read more

The Ruben was served very cold on dry bread. The pasta "salad" was bland angel hair. The girl that brought us our food when we were sitting outside asked us "is there anything else?" I said we would like some napkins then she told us to get them ourselves inside. I understand the self service bar inside, but don't ask if we need anything and then tell us to get them ourselves. If you enjoy paying a lot for nothing special this is your place. $22 for a sub and salad. The sub you built to get charged extra. Pasta salad was just thin spaghetti with nothing else that made it taste like anything special. Caprice salad was small in size a lot of arugula small pieces of mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. I know I am a retired Chef but you could do better somewhere else. read more
