We had dinner here on Saturday, August 22, and were seated in the wine cellar, which was a really nice setting. The restaurant wasn't full, but they were definitely busy. Our waitress was knowledgeable, courteous, and attentive. We were especially impressed that she had the kitchen split the wedge salad we were sharing onto two plates without us even asking. That's always such a nice surprise and a little detail we really appreciate. We had the wedge salad, dinner bread, chicken pot pie, and French onion soup. Everything was very good, and you could tell they use high-quality ingredients. I'm particularly picky about chicken, and the chicken in the pot pie was excellent. Overall, we had a very nice dinner and were impressed with both the food and the service. We'll definitely be back. read more

I love this little gem in our town. This is literally a five minute walk from work, and perfect place for work meetings! We usually stop at this place to celebrate promotions, client meetings, or short meetings. Clean restaurant and attentive staff. Food is also really good here and well portioned. Their specials are always great too! I believe they are open everyday with the exception of Mondays. Typical of downtown restaurants being closed one day to restock and rest. read more

A little disappointed that they make no provisions for birthdays (at their prices, perhaps a cupcake and a verse of Happy Birthday?). Me and my girlfriend went to eat there 4-10-26. They sat us at a table and we sat there for close to 15 minutes without a single person coming to bring us water or anything at all. So we walked out. We walked down the street and walked back and passed the restaurant and saw that our table wasn't even touched. The napkins still laying on the table. The next day we went to the downtown farmers market and decided to call in an order, they put me on hold for over 20 minutes until I had to hang up. The WORST service I've ever heard of! read more

Was in town for work, and this place came recommended by the Marriott, and I'm glad I came! It's located DT Turlock, and has a nice patio with white linen table cloths. The waitress was really friendly and always has a smile on her face! For an app I got the spinach salad, it comes with creamy goat cheese, candied nuts, dried cranberries, pickled onions and capers! The flavors all went nicely with each other. For my main, I got their special, which was sea bass. It was served with charred broccolini and a bean purée, and the fish had a sweet sauce on it. Happy New Year! We had the pleasure of celebrating New Year's Eve together by dining at Bistro 234. Luckily we had made reservations because they were very busy. The atmosphere was festive with couples and larger groups dressed to celebrate the end of another year. We were seated promptly and proceeded to order pre-dinner cocktails. I then ordered the spinach salad and my husband had the meatballs as our starters. Very good! For dinner I selected the sea bass which was a special and am I glad I did! I absolutely LOVE sea bass and will almost always order it if it is available. This sea bass was served on top of a risotto with asparagus. Divine! My husband had the short ribs which he raved about. Even though we were both pretty full from our meals, we split the tiramisu for dessert which is always a treat! Our server Shawn was a delight. So friendly yet very professional and efficient. We did not have to wait long between courses which was nice. Bistro 234 is one of our favorite places to dine especially when we are celebrating a special occasion or just want a nice date night venue. We can't wait until our next visit! read more

We've been to Bistro a lot more lately, and the last few times we got sat by Katie, first few times not so much but last 2 times when I ask for a different table or say I booked dinning area and not bar area she started making faces and doing the eye roll, we like to eat dinner in quiet not by the bar where everyone is talking and where the constant foot traffic is... she needs to be more professional not look irritated by my ask and just fellow my reservation request. I can easily say this was the best steak I've ever had in my life. The Wagyu was absolutely magnificent--melt-in-your-mouth quality. We started with the bruschetta and the calamari, both of which were terrific. The calamari was perfectly flaky and fresh without a hint of being 'fishy.' The ambiance was beautiful, but what really set the night apart was the service. Nikki was incredible and truly outstanding. Had our dinner, drinks & dessert as three dining room tables remained empty the whole time.Was told I needed to reserve thru direct reservation at the restaurant to designate seating. Did reserve a dining room table in online reservation, yet told best to call direct. This is second time this has happened. Not too happy with this situation, when I spend over $250, for two, not to be seated when table is obviously available. You'd think, you would want to make your customer happy as possible. This place is in a nice location in downtown and usually fairly easy parking when I drive through there, might be a little more packed on weekends, but plenty of side streets have parking as well. I came here with my cousin on a weekday, the place was fairly empty with only a few other tables occupied. The restaurant is very well decorated and there is plenty of seating inside and the patio. We sat at one of the high top bar tables and enjoyed people watching. The food is delicious. I got the mushroom sandwich which is a tad messy to eat but so good I didn't mind. Cousin got a salad which she enjoyed. Pricing is fairly typical, though more than I usually like to spend for a casual lunch. read more

Came here on a work trip and it was incredibly good!! We were appreciative they could fit our party of 10. Our server was very nice and helpful in choosing wines. We had a charcuterie board, olives, gnocchi, half chicken, Caesar salad, and cioppino. It was all to die for. Probably the richest and most flavorful gnocchi I have had in my life. Met a group of friends here for lunch on Saturday morning. We had a table of 7 and I believe someone in our party made a reservation. Arrived and had a nice table off to the right of the resturant. There were other diners in the room, there was also a room toward the right of where we were sat, not sure how big that room was. Food was great. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the brunch menu, but we were there for brunch. There is no off menu ordering, brunch menu is active until the dinner menu comes out. Our server was friendly and efficient. Our drinks were continuously filled and plates cleared. I had the lemon ricotta pancakes with tasty syrup. Again, I wish I took a picture of the menu as the plates had lots of great stuff included. Not pictured are the spinach salads and the key lime pie that was had. Everyone loved their food. Great service, great atmosphere. Lots of parking around the restuarant. I will be back to try the dinner menu~ read more

Called in an order for pickup from their online menu. The guy that answered rudely cut me off and told me they don't have any of the items I requested on their online menu. I asked where I could see what they had to order and he said you have to come in. 1 star because: 1) Courtesy towards customers in a restaurant should be minimum viable expectation. it costs nothing to be kind. 2) not keeping your online menu up to date in 2025 is just lazy and frustrating for customers. read more

I really wanted to like this place but it's way too far off from the fine dining experience it claims to be. Ordered bread and it felt like it was microwave heated. The fish I got, honestly, so disappointing. Very fishy smell and flavor. It had a watery consistency to it almost like it was rapidly defrosted or not very fresh. Service was not bad. Kind but there were instances where a server and chef were in the background goofing off. Just unprofessional given the goal of the restaurant. Overall, I cannot recommend coming here. Won't enter the doors of snarky service over salted food & a menu they have had far beyond 10 years to fix. Real food does not need to be over salted and seasoned even if it is a hamburger.. to go. Bistro 234 has been one of my favorite restaurants in the Modesto/Turlock area for decades. I had lunch there today, and the food did not disappoint. It was delicious, and our server, Ryan, was gracious and attentive. When the bill came, I was surprised by the amount as it was significantly higher than the menu on the restaurant's website. I was treating my friend and did not want to bring up the subject in her presence, so I waited until I got home to call the restaurant and inquire about the discrepancy. Unfortunately, the gentleman who answered the phone was nowhere near as gracious as our server had been. When I explained that the online menu prices were significantly lower, he quickly interrupted me and said the online menu had not been updated in ten years and that they had no control over the content. The online menu is on the restaurant's website. Hard to believe they were unable to update. Paying more than the online price was an issue I could have gotten over. The rude response I received over the phone was uncalled for. Not sure if I will continue frequenting a restaurant that treats its patrons so poorly. read more

First time visit...we were invited to a birthday party, and weren't sure what to expect. Well, talk about a pleasant surprise! Quaint atmosphere, extremely friendly staff, and a menu that had a plethora of choices! The appetizers that were set out for us were mouth watering...so full of flavor. It gave me a sense of anticipation for the main meal! I found a stateside bolognese that rivaled my favorite meal from Venice!! Wow! My husbands chicken Marsala was delectable! Our server, Pam, was friendly, diligent about keeping our table clean, and so knowledgeable about which wine to choose based on our menu selections. Came here on an early Thursday night before a concert with my friend's 13-year-old daughter after having some fun bowling. It wasn't busy and the downtown looked very sleepy. There were a few other customers but we were the first to be sat in the main dining room with a ginormous mirror we really enjoyed. My friend had the lasagna and I had a Caesar salad with prawns. She enjoyed her dish but had to take it home. I finished my salad and it was really tasty. I feel the prawns could have been cooked a bit more but they still good. Our server, Shawn, was friendly. Horrible services!! Inexperienced bartender had no interest in service. We waited 15 mins for first drink and closed out our tab after waiting for more than 30 minutes for the second round. Bistro 234 is great place to have a relaxing dinner. The ambiance is very nice. Lowly dimmed lights and music sets the tone of the restaurant. The service is super friendly and very help for navigating the menu. The food is amazing here. They have a great menu with many options. 4.5 stars overall. I have to say it's been years since I've been back to this lovely restaurant. Turlock Is really popping! Upon entering it is aesthetically pleasing. Not too big. Not too small. The (blonde) hostess was very sweet and accommodating for our reservation. The halibut on potato gnocchi was to die for. Cooked to perfection. i have never had potato gnocchi before and it was fabulous. Too fabulous actually. i tried the Cioppino and this is where I took off 1/2 a point. It was not a broth as described which is typically the norm for this dish. It tasted more like tomato sauce. i didn't see any clams in the shell which is also something one would see. it just didn't have the breadth & depth visually or by taste for us. and the risotto in it kind of threw me off as well. It was a tasty sauce though. Overall this is a great place to fine dine or sit at the bar casually. You pick:) outdoor seating available as well. read more
