This is one of the best stand alone hotel restaurants I've been to. The restaurant was clean and each table had fresh flowers on them. The service was exceptional and that was solely because of our waiter - Dino! Let me tell ya growing up in vegas where customer service is everything Dino was one of the best waiters I've ever had. He was affable and went above and beyond to provide a great dinning experience for my wife and I. Side note to manager - give this guy a raise or promotion. Ok...to the food. I ordered the short rib panini and was blown away by the flavor, freshness and tenderness of the meat. Easily one of the best sandwiches I've had. My wife got some buffalo wings and side Caesar salad which were also great. The wings were perfectly tossed in buffalo sauce and had a nice crunch on them. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone staying at the double tree or anyone visiting Modesto. Bravo! read more

Maxi's is located inside the Doubletree Hotel. So to start the day I came here for breakfast. Once you enter you are greeted and seated immediately as they must cater to business travelers that have limited time. As most hotels offer a buffet I always stay clear and order off the menu. Two reasons I don't need the extra calories of having everything on a buffet. Also I want it freshly made for me and just to order what I want. Cost wise it is usually less but it isn't the sole driver for my decision here. I order a cappuccino and it arrives quickly. For my breakfast I have eggs sunny side up. My bread choices did not include my favorite rye bread so I got sour dough figuring it is usually a good choice in San Francisco and geographically close enough. Breakfast came out quickly and was served just as fast. I was surprised to learn from the waitress that they are open all day. Which is great to have thst option on the hotel as it is convenient. When it was time to settle up the check I printed and signed my name. Since I did not use my middle name my server checked my ID. Now I am all for safety but logically speaking who would steal my identity and get my room number correct as well as my name and signature but for a middle name check. Whatever sad times we are living in and Modesto must have alot of criminals coming through. Service and food were good as well as the convenience of being on site where I was stayimg. The next day I just wanted to leave Modesto quickly so I skipped breakfast and checked out of the hotel instead. read more

I stayed at the hotel last night and had dinner and breakfast this morning. Salmon was excellent and eggs Benedict pretty good. I'm not normally a bread eater, but those poppyseed sourdough rolls were bomb! Food is presented nicely and tasty. Ambience and customer service also very good. A hotel restaurant can be iffy. It can be impersonal, w both the venue & the food. How can food be impersonal? Staid, nondescript. Visually corporate. The atmosphere here IS pretty corporate, but not enough to be a deal breaker. I was surprised how good the breakfast was. It's not the most elaborate breakfast buffet set up in town, but it's fresh & covers all the basics. The cowboy skillet was very tasty. My eggs were cooked just right, as were the potatoes. And the presentation is more professional than it is corporate. The coffee is Starbucks. So of course, they get props for this. You're amongst business travelers & out of town guests, if it's not almost empty. Generally speaking the room is very much on the quieter side...at times almost eerily so. But honestly, having a restaurant almost to yourself is kind of relaxing; provided it's during business hours & not at closing time. Solid. 3 & 1/2 stars. read more

I was staying at the double tree inn so I came here to get a to-go lunch one day. The hostess was very nice and accomodating to all the changes I wanted to make. I wanted the crispy chicken sandwich but made into a wrap. It came with french fries and he asked if i wanted ketchup but I got a side of garlic aoili instead. The wrap itself was pretty good. The sundried tomato pesto was conglomerated at the bottom, but other than that it was a very filling and flavorful wrap. read more

When our order came, the chef got our order wrong. I had ordered the spinach wrap with egg whites, instead I got a flour tortilla with scrabbled eggs. Been coming to Maxis for a few years, since my mother moved to senior living in the area. Always been decent with service and selection on the event buffets. Now it seems they are falling in line with everyone else in price pointing out of the core demographic. $42 for a 72 year old that eats as much as a toddler is pretty outrageous. It's a business out for profit so it is what it is but it will not get my family of 6 back again. Why not keep it reasonable and get more people in. Isn't that a profit too? But I guess that's a different set of economics. Less product less people higher prices to meet profit margin will always be the choice made. Located inside the hotel lobby is Maxi's, next to the bar. It is a nice hotel restaurant with a romantic ambiance about it. DINNER We ordered different things and shared, and we were pretty happy with our decisions. I got the Tri Tip sandwich was was really good. Loved the gooey cheese and warm tri tip on the toasted roll. It was delish!! Much better than I expected. You get a choice of fries or sweet potato fries... of course I got the SPF!! :) It also came with a side of Ranch. I also got to try the Pizza Margarita which was yum! The toppings were very fresh, loved the mozzarella. MMMM However, I didn't really like the crust as much as it was a little too thick. The Pulled Pork Panini with grilled onions was very delish. It had a dash of bbq sauce on the grilled bread. Yum! Service was excellent. BREAKFAST We then came by for the breakfast that was included in our stay. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet with the fresh fruits and hot food, but the hot food wasn't "hot", just kinda room temp :(. The juices were very fresh. I loved the ruby red grapefruit juice!! YUM!! :) Coffee was Starbucks and strong!! Kept me up! That's a good thing, as I did need the caffeine. I'd recommend it. :) read more

This is not the same place you knew for Mother's Day brunch growing up. The entire restaurant has been overhauled. And even though they DO still serve Mother's Day Brunch, don't wait till then to try this place. The description for the 5 star rating Yelp gives is completely inadequate when it comes to the food and service at Maxi's. "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" Just doesn't cut it. Does not describe the class, the elegance, the way the wait staff treats you like royalty, the excellent wine selection. The food is outstanding. Chef Breedlove is practically the mad scientist of delicious. From molecular gastronomic masterpieces, we're talking cous cous MADE OF shrimp, to his foam sauces which are never over used, to his famous flatiron steak... how we were fortunate enough to snare him in Modesto is beyond me, but I'm thankful we did! Went here for breakfast. Looked like one waitress working the empty place, but still had to stand by the door while she took her time. Decided to seat myself and grab what i wanted from the buffet. I do not normally take phone calls while i am eating or in a restaurant, but the place was dead and it was important so i went for it. Of course, now she wants to chat lol figures. Then on my way out. I get up and she yells across the dining area "oh you cant leave that on your plate" and points to my muffin. WTF are you serious? Clean, quiet, nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. The alcoholic drinks I ordered were reeeeaaaalllly strong, which would get extra stars if I weren't already rating it a 5. The main reason for frequenting this restaurant over and over again is the Mac & Cheese with edamame. It's consistently fantastic. I've taken my 2 year old there as well, and he's been treated as well as if he were another adult despite the slightly more mature atmosphere. I also hear John Cleese dined here when he was performing at Gallo, and Mr. Cleese loved Chef Breedlove's cheesecake. I keep meaning to try it, but I never have room left after the Mac! read more

Maxi's is the restaurant in the DoubleTree in Modesto. I have stayed at this hotel so often. One year I went from Blue to Gold status in Hilton Honors I was here so much. But it's been a couple of years, maybe three, since I've been back. Tonight I was here on my way to somewhere else, and decided to eat in the bar and get an early night. The food has always been Hotel Decent. You know. A steak. A fish dish. A couple of salad mains. A shrimp cocktail. A burger. Standard decent. 3-star. Maybe 3-1/2. Good enough. Tonight? Wow. Just wow. From what our server/bartender told us, the sous chef was hired/stolen :) from Dewz, a local fine dining restaurant. And what a get, because his cooking was *magical*. I had the grilled shrimp with an herb risotto and a tomato jam and I had to force myself to stop eating it when I was more than full because it was that good! My companion had a perfectly cooked brined pork chop on the bone with fingerling potatoes, and I won't embarrass him by describing the way he stripped the last of the meat from the bone, but I will say that there was nothing else left on that plate. To be perfectly honest? I make a good risotto. I have friends who make better risotto than I. The day I can make a risotto even comparable to the one I experienced tonight? Well, I may not want to retire my good chef's knife, but I will have achieved something wonderful. I hope the entire kitchen gets to see this review, because each and every one of them made us an amazing, delicious meal for us at the end of a very long and exhausting day. We expected "nice". We got "extraordinary". And I just want you, all of you, to know that you, with your food and your care, made the end of our day worth every effort we made, and it was worth every effort you made. This place is in the Doubletree Hotel. Dinner: I read the prior review and tried their mac n cheese, and it was really good. Not heavily cheesy but not dry either - kind of a soft creamy cheddar with 2 other cheese combo. The portion was not not overly heavy but was filling. I topped it off with their own house made cinnamon ice cream. Tiffany the waitress was really nice. Breakfast: They will do a vegetarian stir fry for you and accommodate you for breakfast, though the buffet has enough vegetarian options. They will also package a meal for you in case you have to leave before the buffet opens. read more

To be honest I didn't expect much from the food, since Modesto isn't exactly known for it's great cuisine. But I went there three nights in a row, and the restaurant has exceeded my expectation each time! I would say my favorite is the filet mignon. I asked for it to be medium rare, and it was cooked to tender, juicy perfection. The kitchen even let me have it with the sides originally for the New York Steak, so I was able to enjoy it with the Yukon mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms. The next day I tried the baby back ribs, which was pretty delicious as well. The sides of coleslaw and baked beans complimented the meal nicely. The chicken fettuccine was also very flavorful and had plenty of sauce, which I prefer for my pastas. The only thing I didn't really like was the creme brûlée. The texture was a bit too fluffy for me, as I like my creme brûlée more creamy and smooth. All in all, I was very impressed by the food and also the service. read more

For the past several years, my family has had Christmas dinner at Maxi's. We always looked forward to the rather extravagant buffet, especially the endless cracked crab. The last couple of years Maxi's has gone with a set menu consisting of the standard choices of beef, chicken, turkey and the all-encompassing sea bass. This year's experience was disappointing on two fronts. The service was unnaturally slow, whether it was the gap between courses or simple requests like horseradish or more coffee. Our waiter, while genial and uber-polite, seemed to disappear into the kitchen or to another party for more time than seemed necessary. The restaurant was busy but not packed. A set menu streamlines both the front and back of the house. The staff, excluding the hostess, seemed in training. The kitchen seemed to be new as well. The food was very good and presented simply, yet elegantly. The only glaring, and most important, missteps were the doneness of some beautiful New York's. All but one in our party ordered them, grilled from medium rare to medium well. After the aforementioned excessive wait time, the steaks came under-cooked and mis-matched to their diners. There will always be slight differences in what chefs consider degrees of doneness, but these were obviously pulled off the grill early to make up time. Mine was certainly edible, and I ate all of it. Others ate some and to-go boxed the rest, the fate of the leftovers unknown. To send the steaks back to the kitchen would have meant stretching our meal into the next seating. To be fair, the soup/salad course and the cute chocolate mousse/pecan pie/chocolate-covered strawberries for two dessert were quite good. Maxi's- Train your staff on timing and your chefs on standard degrees of beef doneness. Whoever said the little wooden signs with "rare", "well-done", etc. are tacky was, and is, an idiot. Use them. We came out to check out the doubletree hotel and were hungry. They served s in the lounge and it was cool because they had 3 televisions with various sports going on. First time. Looking for an upscale restaurant to celebrate wife's birthday. Called ahead and was told full service available. Arrived and was surprised to find that the main dining area had been reduced to several tables and booths along a wall. Place was clean and maintained and wait staff immediately seated us. Only one other customer in the dining area. The area reminded us of a coffee shop. Queried the waitress why facility appeared to be not fully opened. Told that due to pandemic, operation had been shut down except for breakfast buffet. Planning to fully open main restaurant around Christmas time. Menu was limited. We selected salmon which is a safe dish. The meal arrived looked professional but the looks where deceiving. the salmon tasted like paper mache served on a bed of rice that was cold. Worse tasting food I have had in some time. With the labor shortage in the restaurant industry, they must have got this Chef off the street. I expected the Hilton to have higher standards and was terribly disappointed. The Wait staff was great and apologetic. Bar service was good. Without the food being up to standards expected from a Hilton hotel, the evening was a disappointment. should gone to Denny's and saved a bunch of money. read more

I try very hard not to let service issues influence my reviews, but my three (3) meals here this weekend definitely establish a critical failure to cook and serve food. That being said, the restaurant was an insult to food service everywhere. The first morning we came down for breakfast around 6:30 a.m., our server went and got me a coffee cup but did not fill the thermos on our table (which is apparently how they handle coffee orders). After seeing the waitress the first time and ordering, we never saw her again. I had to literally walk around the entire restaurant with my coffee cup until I found the manager and ask for coffee, and she had another waitress bring a thermos to our table. Eventually others brought our food, and I had to flag down another waitress for the bill. I met a friend at the restaurant for lunch that afternoon. When we told the waitress that we needed a minute, she disappeared for not less than 20 minutes. Again, I had to get up and find someone so we could order. I guess sitting around a hotel restaurant in a suit in Modesto gives off the wrong vibe? The second day morning we returned for breakfast because my friend was a diamond member and apparently got the buffet for free. Sunday buffet had pancakes, but no egg whites (where there were on Saturday), and once the pancakes ran out they were never refilled for the rest of the time we were there (25 minutes or so). For the record, we met for breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and couldn't have left much later than 9:00, so its not as though it was the end of breakfast hours. read more
