So how to I say great underated and hidden gem all in one? Well duh, I just did! This place is so great. While staying at the hotel its nice to know their is a small little bistro in house that will really nourish your taste buds. Listen, I have been at all the fancey and pricey establishments in town. Sometime you just need to breathe in and relax and get some down home "bistro food" without the big and headache ridden journey of dealing with other patrons, parking and prices. When you are in downtown, and you need a quick bite, stop in and tell them Joey sent you. The service was great. From the pictures we saw online, we were looking forward to the meal, but it was...just not good. Not terrible, but it's not really a restaurant and they didn't seem prepared for us. The service was WONDERFUL...ABSOLUTELY NO COMPLAINTS. But they had no steak knives for our steak, and the food was overcooked and just not good. They offered us a slight discount...like five dollars, but it was not worth the 70 dollars price tag. The hotel itself is lovely though! read more

We stayed at the Hotel Abrego and only realized they had a small restaurant after we had checked in. The menu looked really inviting so we decided to eat dinner at the bistro. We had 3 items: tacos, pasta with shrimp and their seasonal salad. Everything was freshly made and absolutely delicious. We asked the customer next to us if he had ever eaten there before & he said, "every night!" He apparently worked week days in Monterey & that's the place he liked to frequent. The dining was a pleasant surprise. The prices were less than what we would typically pay for lunch. Even if we weren't staying at the hotel, we would still choose the restaurant. The first time in my life actually loving hotel food! I think the reason it's not packed is that there's little on line about this place. read more

I was shocked! We saw this place on yelp and walked in. It is inside a hotel but the food is soooo good!! Chicken skewers and ribs were so tender and tasty. The bruschetta was amazing. Ernie our server was so welcoming and the food is delicious. It's like having dinner at a friends house. You have to try this place!!! read more

Long drive from San Diego so we didn't feel like going out for dinner...so glad we didn't. Decided to eat at the Bistro and we were not disappointed. I ordered the Shrimp Scampi and he ordered the Bacon and Brussel Sprout Flat Bread. Not what we were expecting- i thought it was a pasta dish but it came witj toasted sour dough bread and the sauce was so delicious that I could have drank it right out if the plate. The flat bread came in a different presentation but absolutely delicious! Then came the dessert...the bread pudding...what a wonderful way to end the meal! Didn't take pics of the food because we were hungry and we went to town as soon as it was served. Hat's off to the chef in that magic kitchen and Karen the Server/Barista/Awesome lady was great even with a full house. read more

The food was just bad. We had a deal for the hotel and dinner was inclued. The hotel was nice but this isn't really a "restaurant" It is the hotel lobby set up next to a kitchen. The service was "okay" but the food was pretty bad, not make you sick, or ugly bad, just no flavor, medium warm, overcooked pasta kinda bad. I asked around at the other tables, the only thing anyone thought was decent was the burger. we asked to late - but it is now your tip if you have to eat hear with the living social deal. read more

We just has a pretty yummy dinner included with a deal for the hotel. It's a smaller restaurant but cozy so you can chat with loved ones. The service was good and he checked on us just the right amount of times. Even the Manager stopped by just to make sure we were happy. The appetizer we chose was the shrimp quesadilla. Super delish and the salsa paired perfectly to balance the roasted red peppers and caramelized onions. I got the garlic chicken pizza. Thin crust and a great amount of cheese made it super yummy. We were staying at the hotel anyway and really couldn't decide on where to go in Monterey itself so just decided to go to here. We both ordered burgers which were cooked to how we wanted. The wine was really nice. There was only one serving staff and she was running aroung trying to keep all tables happy. I give my hat off to her. Not a bad place if you want something simple to eat. read more

After being seated at a table of our choice, we were presented with a menu, wine side first, waiter exuberantly describes all the different types of wines and alcoholic beverages and when I said No, thank you I don't drink...the look of astonishment covered his eyes, he said: " oh you don't?" I asked if they had some Perrier or Pellegrino, they did not. I ordered plain water. Assuming I wanted soda water and not asking prior to serving, the waiter served soda water from gun which is what I didn't ask for from the beginning. I rarely drink soda water from the gun but always rather in a separate glass bottle. "Dinner Special" was over-cooked salmon, disappointing for a near $30.00 meal, a lump of mashed potatoes and chopped squash, nothing special about it at all. My dinner partner, received his huge dish ten minutes prior to mine. He enjoyed his generous portion of chicken parmigiana on a plate of spaghetti pasta with two slices of toasted baguette. Water glasses were unclean. Espresso shot after dinner was not properly presented, espresso was in a tall, latte glass mug, and lemon rind was not served separately. Lemon rind accompaniment, was also unheard of, by waiter. Service was excellent, which is why I gave a star. read more

After seeing the rating and few reviews we were a bit skeptical, but we had a deal where our dinner was included with our room so we figured why not.The dining area was small but not cramped. The menu wasn't very extensive but there seemed to be enough choices to please easy body. Started with the shrimp quesadilla appetizer which I found to be very delicious. I had the fish tacos for my entree. They were pretty good, I have had better but that is not a complaint. Had I paid for my meal I would not have left disappointed. Nothing on the menu was over 12 dollars so I would say it was reasonably priced. Not the number one choice of restaurants in a city like Monterey but if you are staying at the hotel or somewhere nearby and it is convenient I would recommend giving it a try. read more

Unexpected surprise! We stayed at the Hotel Abrego and decided to have breakfast there rather than trying to find a place and park the car in town. We had the breakfast burrito which was like none other we'd ever had. Vegetarians beware - this thing was packed with yummy bacon and chorizo in addition to the potatoes, black beans, eggs and touch of cilantro. The sides of sour cream (my favorite) and what appeared to be homemade salsa (which my husband devoured) made it even better. We split the burrito and also ordered the french toast on the side. I've never had better. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned with just enough cinnamon making it difficult to decide what to eat first - the burrito or the french toast! The coffee was delicious and our server, Mady, was great. All in all, we would return there in a minute. I don't know who the chef is, but he was great. You won't be disappointed. read more

My husband and I came in while staying here for a dinner, it was the end of our trip and we didn't feel like leaving the hotel. We were leery because of some posted yelp reviews, but we got absolutely amazing service and had amazing food. My husband had a mushroom hamburger that he said tasted like it just came off the grill. He's very picky about his hamburgers and rarely gets them while eating out, so that in itself is a huge compliment. I had the shrimp fettuccine without jalapeños, and it was unbelievable. I'm looking for a recepie to duplicate it. Our server was Ernie, he was awesome. Friendly, attentive and prompt. We usually stay away from "hotel food" because it's overpriced and usually not that great, but this place was on point. Hats off to the cook last night and to Ernie for his supirior service! We heard about the lounge from another couple and was told to get the burger! Double thin patties w/ bacon & cheese (if you want) on a fresh ciabata bun. Now, I am one who loves burgers and there are very few that can match this. Mendo burger in Mendiocino is one but it's different from this. IMO, the worst part of staying at Hotel Abrego was the restaurant. It's really hard to call this a restaurant, because it's really just a lobby of the hotel with some tables. The people in the restaurant and the people checking into the hotel at the front desk can clearly see each other. Anyway, I had a LivingSocial deal which included dinner up to a $45 value. However, upon arriving at the restaurant, we saw that it was limited to 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, and 2 beverages. The hotel really did not allow us to choose how we wanted to use the $45 value. We ordered an appetizer, the "mini crab cakes" to share, and 2 entrees. The mini crab cakes arrived with 2 very small crab cakes (bite-sized) and a piece of lettuce on the side for decoration. I really think that this was the single-person portion of the appetizer, not the shared-sized portion (these were 2 different options on the menu). As for the entrees, the cheeseburger tasted decent and was average-sized but the steak fries was very oily and fried very hard. So the fries were basically not edible. The pasta entree arrived in a big dish but only had a little bit of pasta inside the dish. It didn't have much flavor. After we finished the meal, we still felt somewhat hungry. The waiter was nice (therefore allowing me to rate the restaurant 2 stars instead of 1), but overall this restaurant is a joke. read more
