We had a great waiter who was patient with us trying to select a cocktail and explained the different cuts of meats well with a sample display. Meats are from Snake River Farms which is good to know. The fresh Pacific oysters from Fanny Bay, Canada were outstanding. So fresh and not fishy at all and plus the jalapeño onion mignonette was sweet and so good that I saved it for my steak lol I loved the cap of my prime rib but the middle was a bit chewy like it is with most prime rib. i was really glad that the steak dinners come with the mashed potatoes and stir fry spinach (also glad it wasn't creamed spinach for a change). He enjoyed his ribeye as well. The salts are really interesting and we were told to use it sparingly since the steaks were already seasoned intentionally. He ordered a glass of Emblem and I had Bee's Knees which was pretty syrupy sweet in the way that honey is with a hint of bitterness. We shared a mini key lime pie which was pretty good and exactly what you would expect. The free birthday cannoli is so fun and was presented with a sparkler but unfortunately my least favorite because of the odd tasting candied fruits in the cream. If I could attribute stars separately to the experience I would give 5 stars for the service, as it was excellent and our waiters were very attentive and just phenomenal. We didn't have to wait for anything that we may want or had ordered. The food however... I am genuinely confused about the reviews I have read because none of them are close to our experience, quite the opposite. Incredible service and terrible food. When you charge astronomical prices you need to actually deliver on that cost and just having good service doesn't cut it. I ordered the Carpaccio for an appetizer and it was just ok, I've had it many times throughout my life because it's one of my favorites so I was disappointed that it wasn't as good as I would have thought. Then about 50 minutes later our entree came. I got the Abalone, which I was over the moon excited about because it is such a rare delicacy and you don't see it served often. I have only ever gotten to try it once and so when I tried the first bite of my meal, disappointed is an understatement. It was overcooked and tough for abalone, and the batter was horrible. It was thick and salty, the kind of batter you would expect at a low end chain diner. The mashed potatoes were obviously an "instant" cook and ready type as though they came from a flake powder in a box or bag. The spinach was decent but also an obvious instant cook out of a bag variety. My guess is that they outsource through a third party that provides a shipping service of certain levels of food items to different restaurants and they use that. It's definitely not made from the source in the kitchen. My husband's dish was not any better. He ordered the steak of which I had a bite, thinking it may be better and my food was just a one off. He was not happy with it being he is a steak aficionado. I found it pretty mid level, not bad, but not better than a mid level restaurant would have, at least it was cooked at the correct temperature. The pricing is the real problem here. The food is not what it should be for the price point. That saying came to mind, "If you have to salt it up, you don't know how to cook". Maybe a new chef is in order, as someone who can cook a delicious meal with very little to no salt, I know it can be done and it's not that hard. We will never be going back based on the horrible food/cooking quality, outsourcing of food products, and the price gouging is just the cherry on top of the insult to the culinary world and those who respect good food and quality dining. I am honestly quite confused. My partner took me to this steakhouse on our first night in Monterey. We were very excited because we love trying new places, and as we walked in and got the first impression of the restaurant we fell in love with the vibe. The section of the restaurant we sat in had two general areas separated by a set of pillars. There were high top tables across from the bar and then booth-tables on the other wall. We were put in a comfy slightly more "private" booth in the back corner which I appreciated as me mentioned it was our first time going (and we were celebrating my birthday). We were greeted quickly and got set with drinks and an appetizer. The server was very kind during the whole experience. He seemed knowledgeable about their restaurant and, as a part of the "experience" they provided, displayed cuts of the meats that they have and are serving. This was a new experience for me and I appreciate the idea, however I did not necessarily need that experience for my night to go well (that may be a personal preference) We first got Prime Rib egg-rolls as an appetizer. When these came out my partner and I got so excited. They looked and smelled amazing. After we ate the first one we both became even more excited, because if the egg-rolls were this good then our steaks are going to be awesome. To note: this is not necessarily a budget friendly restaurant. We entered knowing that this was going to be a *special* meal (seeing how we are both in our mid twenties and we are doing fine we don't have a great deal of overflow to spend) and were ready to spend a bit extra on a nice special experience. My partner got a Beef Wellington cooked *chef recommended* Medium Rare ($68) that comes with mashed potatoes and spinach I got a Filet Mignon cooked medium ($74) that also comes with mashed potatoes and spinach. When the plates came out we both immediately cut into our food. As I cut mine open, it was noticeable pinker than I expect a medium steak to look, but I have no been to a fancy steak house and I don't know better. As I began eating and further cutting up my steak I noticed that it was more pink than I initially thought, and definitely more pink than a medium steak should be. I overall enjoy my steaks medium. To me this means a little light pink in the center. Maybe slightly darker if it's more juicy but when I eat a *pinker* steak it's usually a consistent pink all the way through. This steak had two layers of pink going towards the center I am a non confrontational person and find it difficult to correct things, so after my partner helped me express the mistake, the server was helpful and the manager came by to apologize and remake the steak. I was excited to try again. By the time the second steak got to the table, my partner was about halfway through his meal (I wasn't going to make him wait) so I was eager to finally taste this steak. I was devastated to see the dark pink center of this steak again. By this point I was ready to finish the night and go back to our hotel. I understand the servers and staff feeling bad for our situation and wanting to make it better. Our server came by and made sure we didn't want anything to go, anything for dessert, etc. but I honestly just wanted my check. They did send us home with the second steak cooked *again* and that did come out medium, however when we did leave I wanted something else to eat. This was a very strange and unusual experience. Came here on Saturday night for dinner and place was pretty busy. Server was great, and establishment is well kept, with a nice classy casual feel. Ordered the oysters which were pretty average and nothing too amazing, and the Wellington which was a little under whelming. Also had the prime rib which for $100 at 16 oz I was skeptical, but it was delicious and worth the price. Sides are solid and some even big enough to share. On Saturday March 21, 2026, my group and I came in for our dinner reservation. We had high hopes for this dinner as my partner and I were having our first dinner out with our wedding party before our wedding day. We started off with the Carpaccio and Ahi Tuna Poke and both dishes were tasty. But as our dinner service continued, it took a turn. The general manager came in really emotionally charged when our group started to inquire with the staff about when the food would come out. As the wait for our entrees continued, it seemed more apparent that this establishment is not well equipped to handle large groups. The general manager failed to acknowledge any of the issues in the midst of his emotions. Our entrees took an hour to come out after the appetizers. I understand that good food takes time but our steaks were incredibly salty, mine was closer to medium rare than rare (I ordered rare), and my sister's chicken dish was cold on the top and warm on the bottom, as though it was placed on a warmer while they worked on other dishes instead of serving the food hot. The server was sympathetic and seemed to be trying his best but during one of the conversations with another member of our party, the general manager blamed the server for the wait time stating that the order had just been placed (about 40 minutes after we placed the order with the server). Our server later came by the table to clarify that he placed our order right after we placed it with him. During interactions, the general manager would only address the men in the group, ignoring the women who voiced their concerns. The GM could have taken accountability, apologized for the longer than expected wait times, and been sympathetic (or at least pretended to be). When the food did finally arrive, they seemed confused about which seat ordered what dish at the table. For a steakhouse in a busy tourist area, this experience was a major disappointment. Came here to celebrate my partner's birthday and it did not disappoint. We came on a weekday and it seemed like a semi-slow night. Paul was our server and he was very attentive. We brought our own bottle of wine ($25 corkage), and he made sure our glasses were never empty, at least until the bottle ran out! We started with the artichoke app ($15) which comes with an addictive tomato dipping sauce. I opted for the salmon ($44) and my companion got the ribeye ($82). The salmon came on a bed of risotto and I was able to eat the whole portion. The ribeye came with mashed potatoes, spinach, and some fried onion strings. I managed to steal a bite of the mashed potatoes and they were quite good. Paul surprised us with a birthday cannoli on the house and they also sang happy birthday to us. Coincidentally, the table next to us also celebrated a birthday, so we kinda knew what to expect. The Whaling Station is by far the best steak on the Monterey Peninsula, but 100% the price reflects it too! Upon being seated your waiter will bring a cutting board full of the various cuts of steak being offered that night. All steaks are premium and you can add a lobster tail on any as a side. If you're looking for a nice wine to complement your steak, ask your waiter for ideas. Very disappointing experience here. We waited over an hour for our food to come out, and when we asked about the delay, the GM told us that if we didn't want to wait, we could just leave. That response alone set the tone for the rest of the night. To make things worse, when the food finally arrived, it was cold and overly salty. For a steakhouse with this reputation, that was extremely frustrating after such a long wait. What made the situation even more upsetting was how the GM handled things. He was dismissive, unprofessional, and refused to provide his name when asked. The interaction made our group feel like we were being treated differently because of our race, which is not acceptable anywhere, especially at a restaurant that's supposed to provide a welcoming dining experience. The only positive part of the visit was that the servers and host were kind and tried their best to help. Unfortunately, the GM's behavior completely overshadowed their efforts. We had four people order the Gold NY steak and it was amazing - melt in your mouth, each cooked perfectly. Today was first time visiting The Whaling Station and we were totally impressed! We were seated immediately and welcomed by waiter Paul who made us feel so welcomed with his great personality and great sense of humor!! The ambiance of the restaurant was awesome, didn't feel cramped as tables were at a good distance and loved the table decor with red rose and a small light. We ordered the New York steak ( mash potatoes, spinach and crispy onion strands) and the prosciutto covered scallops with fettuccine and mushrooms. Both were delicious!! Then we ordered a dessert called Pavlova ( meringue topped with fruit and a passion fruit reduction, so heavenly! We were so pleased with the service and food! Water glasses never went empty ! What a horrible ending to the night! We came here to celebrate a life milestone and ended up with horrible customer service and mediocre food. Appetizers came and we had high hopes for this place. And then it went downhill from there. Instead of communicating with our group that food may take awhile, it took us inquiring about it, to get any explanation why our food was not ready. Server mentioned it will take 15 more minutes. Another friend went to check on the food since it's been over an hour at that point. The GM came out of nowhere and started telling us if we don't want to wait, we can leave. Each time the GM came by, it just got worst and worst. From giving our entire group attitude to falsely accusing us of wanting free stuff. We only wanted clear communication and to be treated with respect. I felt horrible for the amount of money we had to pay for our group to have a terrible night and salty cold food. I would stay away from this establishment. We certainly made a good decision coming here, all the fanfare this place has is well deserved. We had fillet mignon and it was GLORIOUS. Ordered our kids from the kids menu, also quite good. The waiters bring a gold baking sheet out & show you the steaks they have available that day. When you order steak, they usually always bring out a few different exotic salts, to try with your meat. We for smoked salt, spicy salt and I believe a truffle salt - which was a great addition to a ready good meal. My friend and I went to the Whaling Station and had a fabulous experience! We had the preparation Table Side of their wonderful Caesar Salad which was so fun to watch and even better to eat. It's really flavorful! We split the Ribeye and Prawns which were cooked beautifully and incredibly delicious, accompanied by mashed potatoes, onion straws and spinach. The Banfi Pinot Grigio was perfect with the entree. We finished with a special Pavlova dessert featuring fresh fruit and meringue and whipped cream, a perfect ending. Ordering wen't smoothly in the I believe first 20 min. Appetizer- Beef carpaccio arrived fairly quickly and was good (but I would hope so since it's a raw appetizer). However from there the evening just went downhill. My order was medium rare fillet mignon, fries and spinach side, with huge emphasis on no dairy as I have mild allergies and so does the bride- we were assure food will be safe. Here are some time stamps: Seating 7:30, Appetizers approximately around 8 pm main course 9:05pm. At 9 pm I went to point out to the host it is 1h of us waiting for our meal and she went to the kitchen to check, 2 min later the general manager appeared and went to talk to my friend and completely ignored I was the person inquiring, that I can live with- but do find disrespectful as throughout the night he only addressed men at our table and brushed over the women (Let's be honest ladies, this is not the first time this happened to us). But when he looks at my friend his response was: For over an hour for 15 meals is completely normal (it is not- especially not in steakhouses and fine dining experiences) which is certainly where their prices are- nearly on par with Gordon Ramseys Steakhouse in LV- where BTW my party of people was also around 10+ and our food was done in under 25min. The GMs other suggestion was: Well, you can also just leave with a very disrespectful tone, when we were simply inquiring about the status of our meal. He also tried to blame the server for placing the order late, the server later came assuring us he placed our order immediately and I do believe him. If he just assured us our meal is on the way the whole thing would have been over before it even started. That said, regardless of where such mistake happens in any professionals establishment you do NOT blame your staff in front of customer and take that to resolve behind closed doors, and you do not tell 15 people who are ready to spend large amount of money to leave. Finally, after this fiasco few minutes after our meals started arriving, now noticeably distraught staff had no idea who ordered what. Soon to be bride's steak was overcooked, very salty and slightly cold. Mine was cooked right, lukewarm and also slightly too salty. And as I learned the hard way later must have contained dairy because I had a bad reaction for the entire next day :( Unfortunately, one thing I noticed immediately when we walked in, we were the only mixed race group in the entire restaurant (and yes, I am white) that said the rest of my friends aren't and I could not help but notice not only the GM treated us differently, but could not help but wonder how is it that the group of all white men equal size to ours- in front of us, was receiving their meals through the entire evening? It seemed as we were the only ones waiting while others received service, we were left alone for 1h. Most of our party ended up leaving and waiting outside as we are not confrontational people, the grooms cousin stay behind to talk to the manager about the whole situation as there were more unpleasant interactions with him after the meal, for example him being rude to grooms sister. He ended up discounting the meal bill 50%, great, we did not spend as much? But in all honesty, I would have rather pay full amount, as this did not repair the lovely evening we had planned, mediocre food was mostly cold, dry or overcooked and I would probably recommend choosing a different place to indulge, if this one is on your list. read more

I eat steak every week and also grill my own steak on the weekends. I love steak and really wanted to try Wagyu for the first time for its infamous "melt in your mouth" taste. I ordered the wagyu ribeye steak for almost $90, unfortunately for the price it was not the best steak I've had. I had to use the salt they give you table side to salt my own steak and it tasted like any other grilled steak. It was cooked perfectly with a good sear and medium rare but lacked that extra "umami" flavor for it being wagyu. I'd recommend to try other things on the menu, the prawn pasta was good. We spent our 20th anniversary at the Whaling Station, and it was a confusing, underwhelming experience for a $300 meal. Despite having a reservation, they were not ready to seat us or anyone who arrived before or after. The entire staff seemed frantic and rushed the whole night. The food was a letdown, especially since the steak temperature is the one thing I truly care about. We ordered a medium-rare porterhouse for two, but it arrived with a "Medium" sign stuck in it. It was dry and pre-carved but with quite a bit of the meat still on the bone. The juices were pooled at the bottom of the plate instead of rested in the meat. The sides were okay, while the calamari and desserts had a pre-packaged, Sysco quality that didn't feel like fine dining. The $7 cappuccino was mostly foam with a little espresso shot at the bottom. The service was rushed. Our waiter was visibly overwhelmed and jogging or speed walking between tables and the kitchen. The first time he came to our table he asked if we were ready to order drinks. No "thanks for joining us" or introduction of who he was, or listing off the specials. He brought the steak board over and swiftly went through this memorized script of each steak cut. It felt like something was going on behind the scenes that must not be normal given all the positive reviews. Came in for dinner during last week's Pro Am event at Pebble Beach. Location is situation a block up from Canary Row which gives the ambiance a little something special. Service was friendly and prompt and bringing out the cuts of meat for the table to look at and choose is a nice touch! I ordered the surf and turf which was a NY Strip steak and added a lobster tail. The steak was good, but the lobster tail stole the show... this thing was amazing... perfectly cooked and with the drawn butter was amazing! The only downside was our table was right outside the restroom which wasn't that pleasant. Amazing place to stop for dinner! Our server, Dan was incredible. Very attentive, explained the menu options, and even highlighted some of the favorites. Made sure we had everything we needed. The food was to die for, hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had. The prime rib was cooked perfectly and SO tender. The garlic fries are to die for! I went here because a lot of my coworkers recommended it. I wasn't much of a fan. I got the beef Wellington it was really salty, I couldn't finish it. I'm not a complainer I just won't be back. We also got the Caesar salad, I wasn't a fan. It just looked very mediocre. The servers were very kind, however, they kept forgetting about us. Took us about 30 minutes to get someone's attention for our check so we could pay. I gave this place a chance and unfortunately will not be back. read more

I'm NOT one for big birthday celebrations....a nice dinner with a special group of friends and family is enough for me, I like to keep it simple. I wanted a nice steak dinner for my birthday, so I looked up Whaling Station Steakhouse on yelp and it was a HIGHLY rated establishment it DID NOT disappoint. Coming off a cold so my appetite wasn't as strong, I made it count though, I ordered the New York Steak with broccoli and asparagus (I devoured it all) I made sure to get my protein and vegetable intake. Made reservations a day before and when we arrived , BAAAAM... seated immediately! Even though we were a few minutes late due to traffic, the restaurant was extremely busy on a Thursday evening. After we were seated our server took our orders and got to business right away. I took in all of the electric energy surrounding us...the traditional dark wood decor that you typically will see at a steakhouse, charismatic employees. While we were waiting for our food the person next to us I believe was a food critic and I have never seen one while dining so that was a new experience for me. Overall in conclusion; lemme say this place was really good! NOT the best steakhouse, but definitely worth a try! I dropped by on a Friday night without a reservation and I was able to sit at the bar just inside the restaurant. They offer a full menu and a bar menu for dining at the bar. Which can be great when you don't have a reservation, or you are just dining as a single person. The restaurant has a beautiful interior with multiple tables. There also seems to be a smaller dining area on the other side of the main dining room, not sure if this is for walk ins. I ordered up a gin martini that came out promptly. As for the meal, I ordered off the bar menu. The Prime Rib French Dip with a side of fries and an iceberg wedge with Roquefort dressing ($27). This plate came out huge for a bar menu item and I barely finished it. The prime rib was great, and the bread was lightly toasted as well. I look forward to coming back to try the Beef Wellington, hopefully on my next special occasion. read more

We came to The Whaling Station for dinner and had a pretty mixed experience. There were definitely some highlights, but overall, it didn't quite live up to expectations--especially for a place that gives off fine dining vibes. To start, I had the clam chowder and crispy cauliflower. The chowder had a nice flavor, but it was super thick--almost to the point of being more stew than soup. The crispy cauliflower was breaded and flavorful, definitely one of the better starters. For my main, I went with the hanger steak special. It was cooked really nicely with a great sear and came with a herby chimichurri sauce that worked well. The shrimp scampi was bright, citrusy, and full of flavor, and the parmesan fries it came with were honestly the best bite of the night. I also had a side of sautéed mushrooms which were great. Unfortunately, my wife didn't have the same luck. She ordered the sirloin medium, but it came out rare. We flagged down the server, who said they'd take care of it, but it took over 25 minutes to get the corrected steak. By the time it came out, everyone else was done eating, which kind of ruined the experience for her. For dessert, we shared the crème brûlée. It had a perfect sugar crust and rich, creamy custard. Only complaint was the strawberry garnish was just awkwardly half-sliced, so the only real way to eat it was by picking it up. Service overall was pretty rough. Plates were cleared from only one side of the table, water was refilled for only some of us, and one of the glasses on our table was dirty when we sat down. When our mains came out, we still had empty appetizer plates sitting in front of us from 10 minutes prior, so we had to shuffle things around to make room. The atmosphere was also louder than expected--there were kids at a nearby table loudly banging silverware, and the noise level in general made it hard to have a casual conversation. Honestly, the vibe felt more like an Applebee's than a fine dining spot. Overall, the food had some good moments, but the service and atmosphere really missed the mark. With so many great options nearby, I doubt we'll be back. read more

Had reservations here and even though we were informed that it has been pushed back by 30 minutes, it was really only 10 minutes. We got seated and our waiter was great. I ordered the French onion soup to start which was delicious. For my entree, I went with the prime rib. It was tender and flavorful. read more

The Whaling Station never misses with the ambiance, liveliness, and service. I think some aspects about the food have missed the mark lately though. We had the prime rib egg rolls, crab cakes and firecracker shrimp for appetizers. The shrimp was delicious and large enough to share portions between 4 people. The prime rib egg rolls were a miss for me; it had a weird curry like sauce that clashed with the flavor the prime rib. The crab cakes for were. The hollandaise sauce I felt clashed with the flavor of the crab cakes. For dinner I had the beef Wellington. Superb as always and perfectly cooked. read more
