This was an underwhelming visit. I had dinner here with a friend. When we first arrived, we were over attended to while we decided from the many delicious looking options on their menu. We ordered drinks and a chips and guac to munch on while we decided on dinner. The drinks were tasty, though strong! The chips and guac were disappointingly bland and under seasoned. Everything else was delicious. I got the paquetitos de tinga (the best thing I ate by far!) and the croquetas de bacalo. My friend loved her vegetarian tacos - described them as flavorful and tasty with the perfect amount of spice. The reason for the 3 stars is that after we finished dinner, we were offered a dessert menu and said yes, but waited a long time and didn't get it! Then it took ages just to flag the wait staff down to pay our check! I have to say with so many other quality options in the area, I probably won't return. read more

Milford Center has its fair share of good restaurants but Bistro Basque takes the silver medal for great hospitality, ambiance, creative tapas & interesting specials. It's not quite like being in a popular Madrid wine bar but it's close enough ( alas, no grilled fresh sardines ). The owner is often present & cheerfully visits tables to inquire on his patrons satisfaction even when it's slamming busy. Patio service is open in fair weather & while it can get a little cramped in there on busy nights, it's still a pleasant & cool space that's out of the hot sun. Most recently our table shared garlic shrimp & a sublime artichoke small plate. They ran out of the skate special the evening we dined so we enjoyed the mahi-mahi instead. Let me start by saying that this is my Mom's favorite restaurant. We started with my Mom ordering the Butternut Squash soup. I am not a fan of Butternut Squash soup but I did taste it and it was delicious. I had the Escargot in an amazing garlic butter wine sauce. For the main course, My Mom has the seafood stew and I had a dish that had skirt steak, chicken and chorizo sausage over vegetables topped with two fried eggs. We finished the meal with a apple caramel crepe and probably the best coffee I have ever had. It is a rare occurrence when I go to a restaurant and really like and enjoy every dish but Bistro Basque blew me away. Everything was cooked to perfection and can't wait to go back and explore the rest of their menu. The service was as good as our meal. If you have not had the pleasure to dine here you have to go. So happy with the previous dinner, we decided to bring other friends to share this little pleasure. Being out of my preferred wine, David made the suggestion to taste his Ribera del duero. He made me change my mind on these wines, enjoying an amazing pairing with the special of the day, the remarkable Osso Bucco. My wife stayed on her preferred delicacy from Bistro Basque, the Foie Gras. Not many chefs in the area master the art of preparing hot foie gras: it is absolutely worth the drive if you're not local. Enjoyed dinner and cocktails here on a Friday evening. It was very busy so we waited for a table quite a while. Filled the time with cocktails from the bar and were fortunate to defund a table to stand by until the server took us to ours out back. The ambience is casual to nice with a quaint Euro feel. Our waitstaff were very attentive and kind and kept up with the beverages while we waited for our food. We enjoyed the scallops, portobello and a few appetizers. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Milford. When the weather allows, sitting in the ivy covered brick walled garden out back is a true pleasure. The interior is full on old world charm in the best of ways. The food is truly excellent. There is always something for everyone on their menu. We always stick to the beautiful array of shared tapas. My personal favorite dish hands down from the tapas menu is Gratin de chou-fleur (Cauliflower gratin wrapped with serrano ham). Their Piquillos rellenos con ensalada mixta de Txanguro (Piquillo peppers stuffed with iberian style crab meat salad) is also darned delicious. The drinks are also well made. You simply cannot go wrong here. read more

The tapas...well, like most tapas, it's not much of a value. However, the entrees might surprise you on that front... I had the squid tapas and it was okay. The sauce wasn't really that notable (it was kinda spicy, I suppose?) but at least the squid wasn't overcooked. My scallops entrees was very good. The scallops were cooked well. The dish had a hearty touch to it with the mashed potatoes and spinach. The service was excellent, as the waiter paitently explained all the dishes. He checked up on us often. The food kinda came out slowly initally with the tapas, but it picked up when we got to the entrees. The restaurant's decor is warm, but with little lighting. My wife and I went here for date night last Saturday evening. The service was beyond wonderful and we felt at home. I can say this establishment was worth every penny. We had such a great time that I can honestly say it was one of our best date night in a very long time. I personally had the paella and my wife had the sword fish. I thought my dish was up to par with the other paella dishes I had in the past six months. My wife was thought the sword fish was a little chewy but the dish as a whole was good. We were in town for the Milford Oyster Fest. last year we discovered this wonderful little place and brought friends along with us to enjoy the little patio they have in back. So we walk in and start walking to the back, which was what we did last year, and a gentlemen "yells" at my wife can I help you. After she explained we wanted to have a drink in the back - he asked if we had dinner reservations - if we had them, for that early, we would have said so - no? He promptly told us they had a full house for diner reservation, which I am sure was true for later - did it ever cross their minds that we could have been asked "nicely" could we be out by 6ish. We would have been very open to that. Instead, we walked outside, apologized to our friends about the rude behavior, it was rude - even the guests at the bar turned around. Irony - they saw the very nice handwritten sign that they had a nice covered patio in back...then we left. And we will not be back. read more

I'm always impressed by the amazing service offered by bistro Basque/ el barrio. Went there tonight to enjoy one of the few places that offers happy hour during COVID-19. I quickly learned that we would be seated in el barrio and that the menus were a mix of the best from both bistro basqie and el barrio. Thankfully they had the tapas that I was craving. I enjoyed the cauliflower Au gratin and the garlic shrimp, we also had the tinga and the croquettes. Everything was very good. My boyfriend did say that the beer was a little on the warmer side, granted we are in a heatwave. I will re-emphasize that the service was top-notch. DELICIOUS. We went here this past weekend with my family - my parents are repeat customers and have gotten to know the owner - and were not disappointed. This restaurant is good for a fun night out with friends (not too large, as it's a small place) or a romantic dinner for two. It's quite dark, but they give you little reading lights to read the menu, which was so fun! They have a beautiful, enclosed/heated patio that is so quaint. Since Basque is an area between France & Spain, it's a mix of the 2 cuisines, which was a really neat change of pace. We started off with a few tapas - I got the sausage (the sausage was tasty but the best part was the apples & the AMAZING sauce!) and tried my mom's artichoke appetizers, which was also amazing. For my meal, I got the Filet Mignon and my husband got the Skirt Steak. I preferred my cut of meat (he preferred his) but I liked his sides better (he got au gratin potatoes vs. my mashed and a ratatouille instead of cut-up veggies). The red sangria was too dry for my taste but the white was perfect! And the bread was soo good - hard & crispy on the outside, warm & chewy on the inside. I ended up getting the seafood paella which had good flavors but I didn't like how there was such a lack of shrimp and the shrimp was over cooked. This is the best restaurant that Connecticut has to offer. From atmosphere to the quality of food. Although the menu is small, everything taste wonderful down to desert. They also own El Barrio next door. This has more casual dining, but restaurants share the same kitchen. They also have a great selection Japanese whiskey. read more
