"When a burger and fries just won't do" On my most recent visit to Maui I had a chance to visit this Mediterranean/Italian restaurant in Kahului. This is a restaurant neither the kid or myself has tried and because we were going for a late dinner, we decided to give them a try. (When you are going to eat at 8:30pm in the Kahului/Wailuku areas of Maui on a week night, choices are slim. ) Not accustomed to eating this late I decided to go with the lobster/shrimp salad. Very nice plating- pretty good portion of lobster with three pieces of shrimp, avocado, almond slivers, corn, mandarin orange, tomatoes over a bed of arugula bathed in a light citrus dressing. I liked that the dressing had just enough taste to showcase the seafood and not overpower the salad. Couple that with the delicious complimentary bread, this made the perfect light dinner meal. The salad price- $16. Reasonable. Da kid had Linguine Alle Vongole- a homemade linguini clam dish bathed in a. butter, garlic and shellfish broth sauce. The garlic was pretty intense according to da kid which is just the way he likes garlic dishes. The price- $18. Worth it. The portions are satisfying but not overly generous. If we were hungrier we easily could have ordered a tapas or other appetizer offering to compliment the meal. (Maybe next time) A couple sitting next to us ordered the Paella which could easily feed two possibly three people. You could smell the delicious aroma as the dish passed our table-mmmm. Our server Jessie mentioned this was a popular dish and certainly one to try next time we get a chance to dine here. The dining room is tastefully done, there is a bar area that serves a multitude of beverages and we have heard there happy hour is top notch. (4 to 6pm) Nice setting, good menu selection, reasonable prices, friendly servers and easy parking. A nice combination that adds up to a nice choice when dining in Kahului. read more

Where do I start. No need to dress up here super casual. Upon arriving we had reservations and the host I guess did not believe us having to show her on our phone she was like ok and some waiter walked by and rolled her eyes . We sat down in center of room. We noticed that they were tinting away walk ins because they had no reservation but they clearly had the room . Overheard them saying they were short staffed . The food arrived I had to return my meal because the ahi tuna wasn't cooked all the way even though menu didn't specify why fish it was so I could have been prepared. When asking waiter can I have something else she look in disgust like I was speaking a different language . I ended up having them cook it a little longer. By time we ate everyone was ready to go between the service and this laughing hyena behind us who was clearly there just for the drinks and try to impress some girl he was with. After a rough day at work, I met up with a colleague for happy hour and dinner. I chose Bistro Casanova because my husband had never been there. We did not have any reservations but they were able to seat us out on the lanai. The seating area was perfect the evening was cool. We ordered the mojito and strawberry margarita carafes for our happy hour. Our tapas was so good! We ordered the tagliatelle and mussels with clams and a bread basket. Mmmm dipping the bread in the mussels and clams gravy was so onolicious! I ordered the ahi tempura which was prepared perfectly and delicious. Great dinning experience for groups, especially for celebrations and Pau Hana. We had a group of 7 and everyone enjoyed their meals. I didn't get pictures of the Frites, Fettuccini Al Agnello, and Cioppino. We also had the Lychee, Strawberry, and Mango Mojitos, which were very refreshing. I would recommend going for happy hour instead to enjoy the wine or mojito carafes. Happy hour is Monday-Saturday from 4-6PM. Pains me to leave this review as I love this place, but, it needs to be said. Not sure if they changed chefs or recipes, but, we recently went for lunch and literally everything tasted pretty lame (Ceasar, calamari, pasta). The white pasta fungi, specifically, tasted horribly bland. It was as if it was just boiled pasta with mushrooms and cheese. It's normally bomb every time we come but this time was bad enough to where we'd be hard pressed to ever come back. The staff was made aware of our concerns but no real effort on their part to try and alleviate the issue was made, just told us they're doing stuff different. Hopefully the owner or workers see this and knows that whatever they changed doesn't taste better. The couple next to us had the same experience. This my first time at this restaurant. We went as a suggestion from our friends who loved the fettuccine carbonara hence we ordered it and the black spaghetti with seafood as an entrée. The fettuccine was was perfectly cook Aldente however it lack creaminess salt and minuscule amount of bacon or guanciale. We were not happy with out entree. Had an amazing dinner here while we were visiting Maui. So glad we decided to take a chance and do something off-water. Pietro, our waiter, was outstanding. He loves his job. You can just tell. My daughter asked her grandfather if anyone ever got a bowl of croutons (after frowning at the Caesar salad) and voila! A bowl of croutons appeared in front of her, and a pair of smiling eyes had delivered it. And he kept being THAT attentive. Wine selection is amazing. And the cocktails... Magnifique. I had the crazy smash, and I could have just sucked on those all night. Adults had pasta dishes. Kids had pizza. (And adults were fighting over the gooey cheese that was falling off the slices.) Pasta was handmade and, for some, they were nicely transported to their beloved Cinque Terre. (Some of us haven't been yet.) Salads were large and the beet salad was crammed full of goodies. It was a meal in itself. The background music was big band and set such a Sinatra like atmosphere. Classy, romantic, special. This is a sister restaurant to Casanova's in Makawao but with a slightly different menu. They really are the best restaurant in Kahului as far as food quality, taste and selections. The lunch menu offers sandwiches and the dinner menu offers more pastas and entrees. ATMOSPHERE: Plain interior, nothing special. There's a small bar, sofa lounge seating, and a separate room that can be had for private dining. There's also protected outdoor seating with a garden setting though no view, and slightly uncomfortable metal grated seats. MENU: Apps, pastas, traditional Italian entrees, desserts. HAPPY HOUR: They have a nice selection of wine and margarita carafes and apps available from 4-6pm. BEVERAGE: Mojitos - I tried two flavors, the lychee and strawberry. The lychee flavor wasn't too detectable but was good. The strawberry one I enjoyed more. Neither was too sweet or strong. Very refreshing. FOOD: Calamari Fritti - Very mainstream but very good. The batter is light and the dipping sauce is a garlic caper mayo which is way better than boring marinara. Frites - Hand-cut potatoes that are fried to a dark brown, almost reminiscent of sweet potatoes but thankfully they're not. Very good with the mayo dipping. Caesar Salad - My first experience with this wasn't good at all. The dressing was so light and flavorless it was horrible. Skip to a couple months later, gave it another try, this time with anchovies, and I loved it. The dressing was better (hopefully due to my previous review) and the anchovy juices gave it more flavor. Lingine Al Funghi - Fabulous! My favorite dish here. The pasta was done perfectly (green & white mixed made for a very appetizing & colorful appeal) done in a creamy sauce topped with mushrooms. $4 add-on chicken on the small side. Fettuccine Ossobuco - The veal wasn't shredded as stated - it was cut into strips, but still super tender done in a medium tomato broth. The fettuccine is wider than your normal variety. Pretty good but probably won't get it again. Capellini Alla Checca - The first time I tried this I only had a bite from a friend and loved it, but I didn't enjoy eating it as an entree. Angel hair with a super mild flavor leaves you craving for something else. Topped with pine nuts, spinach, tomatoes, and parmesan. Bigioli Neri Al Salmone - Awesome. Black pasta with smoked salmon, peas, leeks and topped with tobiko. The pasta was cooked perfect and the flavor is very mildly rich. I thought the pasta was black due to food coloring and not squid ink because of previous experience while eating in Italy, but I was graciously corrected by the owner. Paella - I finally got the chance to try this huge dish with 3 other friends. It works great as an app for a large party. Saffron rice in a medium flavored sauce topped with scallops, shrimp, mussels, calamari, chicken, and sausage. I guess I was expecting more from this dish but it was very unimpressive. Maybe I was spoiled with a better version in Barcelona? Yup, that's what it was. Rigatoni Carbonara - Yowza this was super tasty! I don't think I've had a better carbonara anywere. It normally comes with rigatoni but I'm a noodle guy so they made it with the green and white linguine from the mushroom pasta. Pollo Cacciatore - This was really tasty! They use half of a bone-in, skin-on chicken, simmer it in a tomato-based broth and topped it with sliced tomatoes, red bell peppers, and capers. To the side is a flavorful nest of angel hair pasta. If you want a tomato-based pasta with chicken instead of beef, this is the winner. Trofie Al Pesto Genovese - Short, twisted pasta and 4 seared scallops done in a dry pesto sauce, topped with a spoonful of sun-dried tomato "aura," and pine nuts. Mix the "aura" into the dish to give it some life, though the taste was still very subtle with a nice hint of nuttiness. My friend having the same dish added salt, I did the ultimate sin and added cheese, then it was way better. DESSERT: Affogato - I've never heard of this until my friend ordered it. It's vanilla ice cream with a poured over shot of espresso. OMG my two favorite things, coffee AND ice cream?! Yowza! SERVICE: The restaurant can get busy at times and is gaining in popularity, so I'd suggest making reservations just in case, especially if you have 4 or more in your party. Overall service is friendly and professional, and I've never encountered any problems or attitudes. The bartenders are great. OVERALL: Excellent food & prices. Great alternative to Marco's with more traditional Italian fare. read more

The food is good, but the service can be a little in the slow side, but the servers are always friendly. This time I tried the caprese salad which was served warm. It was amazing! I was a little disappointed in my visit to the Bistro. The girls and I try to go there once a month for our lunch time "meetings". I would normally order a pasta dish, but I was convinced to give the Pollo Parmigiana...aka Chicken Parm. A decent sized chicken breast, breaded and fried, then smothered with house marinara and topped w/ melted mozzarella cheese is accompanied with fries (fritte) and a very small portion of salad. The chicken was bland but was saved by the marinara. The few leaves on my plate, oh pardon me, the "salad" on my plate were literally finished by the 3rd stab of my fork. The fries were cold and soggy. Our waitress was slow and seemed overwhelmed. She had that "I'm hating life" look on her face. We all felt bad for her and gave her a good tip. read more

Awesome happy hour. Lively bar scene. Easy to park. Really enjoyed the food here. I think it's the best Italian food in east Maui . We have come here often over the years. Centrally located. My favorite dish, and the bartenders too!!....is the angel hair pasta with spinach. The bread basket is also too shelf. Love the Mojito's and margaritas during happy hour. So we're waiting for an hour the actual door dasher calls says I just arrived at bistro Casanova and they said they did not see my order even though it was confirmed so DoorDash asked if we'd like to cancel the order I said no tell him to make it. He said OK and hung up 10 minutes later I get email and text saying that they canceled my order jerks that's all I can say. Made a reservation for 3 on Open table. got there and the Hostess greeted us with a smile and positive attutude and took us to our table. our server was named Jesse and she was very Pleasant and knowledgeable about the whole menu. Excellent service. Should also note we had a 3 year Old with us And our server was very accommodating Food Prices were very reasonable. food was well presented and timed accordingly to how fast we eat. With all the supply chain problems and worker shortages, along with continued covid restrictions, I cannot overstate how hard it has been to find a decent place to have a nice dinner in Maui. We have been here four days and this was our first real dinner. On our way back from the Road to Hana we passed through Kuhului and was looking for a place to eat. Stopped at he Bistro Casanova without a reservation hoping we could get a table. Walked in and they sat us almost immediately. Service was excellent. Everything was served promptly and the wait staff was never far away. Decided on the Caprese appetizer. Came with well seasoned greens, proscuitto and a superb balsamic vinegar. Just an amazing plate. I had the capellini with shrimp, tomatoes, pine nuts, capers and spinach. My wife had the chicken parmesan with roasted potatoes and spinach. Both well-sized portions were served piping hot and were very flavorful. The chicken parm in particular had an excellent flavor. Prices were reasonable, service was good, food was hot and tasty. This review is for dinner service on a Friday night at the Kahului location. My spouse has had dinners here previously and this night was definitely not one of his better experiences. Atmosphere The entryway was clean, and the low-lighting contributed to the fine dining feel of the restaurant. The windows were extremely clean and reflected the restaurant, which in a way, was a benefit because we could not see the busy street outside. The waiting area was nice but off to the side, so you feel squeezed upon arrival, but you can move to the left of the entryway and find plush seating for yourself. Service We were greeted by the hostess right away with smiles. A server who was passing by also smiled at us. When we were sat, our dinner service is where our experience dropped a star. Our server did not seem pleased to be serving us. We noted that she visited tables around us with an apology each time. We were served our salad and main entrees. Our appetizer was not served. When we inquired, the server blamed the kitchen (I always dislike that). She offered to bring it out, at no charge. We agreed because we thought it would be a nice treat to take home. When we were ready to pay for our meal, the appetizer still had not arrived. When we paid, I noted that the appetizer was not on the check, which led me to believe it was never ordered in the first place. In other situations, the appetizer would show up on the check, and then show up as a negative, indicating comped. Of course, this could be their system is different. We felt that our server was "disconnected" from her tables, as she hardly smiled or looked at us directly speaking with us, always looking to the side or over my head. Pricing The prices seemed on par for Maui. Food The shrimp scampi was delicious. My husband's fresh local fish served with picatta sauce looked amazing. The meal was fine, but we thought that for the experience of service, we should have stayed closer to home in Kihei. End We will return, but not right away. Just moved from the mainland and tried several Italian restaurants without finding a good one. Our friend recommended Bistro Casanova and wow, we were pleasantly surprised and delighted! The locale has a wonderful atmosphere and our server, Jesse, was very knowledgeable about the menu and explained ingredients and how each meal is homemade. I ordered the Cioppino and my girlfriend ordered the "special", blackened Mahi-Mahi with a shrimp cake base, avocado with special sauce. Both were amazing! The sauce for both dishes was flavorful and zesty, with tasty spices. See Photos. For dessert we split the Tiramisu and weren't disappointed. We are looking forward to trying all the pasta dishes. Got take out and was a little taken back at how little food there was for what i paid. The pasta had a good flavor but man it was salty. Had it not been so salty I would have rated higher. Shared the paella. A good mix of many types of seafood, chicken and sausages. The chicken was good size and filling, but the seafood had a strong fishy taste which almost demanded lemon. I'm not a lemon person, but the taste was too much. I also found it strange that when we requested extra lemons, instead of coming on a plate, the three slices were brought wrapped in a napkin. Unusual for a restaurant at this price point. The "free tiramisu" offer is also misleading where you need to post a photo to get it, but nowhere before that does it say you need to also have a boarding pass from the same day. Needless to say, we were not flying in or out that day so that offer was a disappointment. We tried this place several years ago and was not as pleased this time around. I hope it improves by our next Maui trip...if we return back to this restaurant. read more

Being that it was busy, I expected things to run less smoothly for the evening, but I was quite surprised. Recently visited Bistro Casanova (after moving away). The Italian food has definitely improved, top notch in fact! One of the few restaurants that serve fresh pasta, so it's always a treat to have fresh rather then dried prepared. The difference makes for an amazing experience! Food was very good except the bread which was cold and bad. The Casanova in Makawao has great bread and oil for dipping. I asked for more sauce since my pasta was kind of dry but was told I would have to pay more to correct the problem. Our server was very nice and efficient although the table next to us had a really cold server. Had to wait a long time for the food but our server kept giving us updates. It is what is to be expected in today's environment. That is fine. Once again the food was great. Plus our water was constantly being refilled which was nice. read more

First time coming here and I would definitely come here again. We had an excellent wait staff especially because we had a party of 10. Started with Happy hour of Chianti wine, which was not a glass but half a carafe. We ordered the calamari for appetizer, split a full order of ceasar salad, ravioli tutufo (wife), paella for 2 (myself with plenty of take home), and finish off with a free tiramisu (compliments of Yelp). Food was excellent, pasta was fresh, and their paella was onolisish. I would recommend coming here for some great Italian food. read more

It's been awhile since I've been back to enjoy their mojitos and frites. I've frequented here many times and always felt comfortable and was given exceptional service. But after last week's visit...I may not go back. NEVER judge a person by the way they dress. The mister was in surf shorts and a t shirt & I was in jeans skirt w/a blouse. We were not drabby dressed or disheveled looking. Comfortably dressed. In fact, I saw many others dressed similar sitting in the bar area. I wanted a nice sit down early dinner with the mister since it's been awhile. (STRIKE ONE) It took more that 5 minutes to be acknowledged at the hostess stand. Not one person smiled or mentioned that someone would be with us in a moment. Even the employees that were huddled at the bar seen us...I made contact with a few. No one acknowledge us. They seemed too busy or occupied in their conversation. (HUGE STRIKE TWO) My server felt that she should serve and give fantastic service those that was dressed nicely & seated AFTER me. There was only ONE other party seated in the section we were in prior to us arriving and the other was seated about 10 minutes after we sat. She decided to serve the party that seated after us before us. It took her 15 minutes since we sat to finally acknowledge us & take our drink orders. She was about to step away I mentioned we were ready to order our food also...her answer..."Oh...I didn't think you were ready." After 15 minutes of sitting, yes we were ready. (STRIKE THREE) Our order consisted of 3 tapas & an entree. My boyfriend just wanted tapas (calamari, clams & mussles in white wine and frites). I was hungry for their linguine el fungi with chicken. The frites sat awhile on the warmer, the clams and mussles were rubbery & the calamari was soggy-ish. This meant it was made & sat on the warmer for a bit before arriving at our table. While I witnessed bread baskets passed by we were never offered. Once my entree arrived I asked our server if I had a bread arriving. "Oh... you wanted bread? Ok" While everyone else got a full basked. I got a basket with 2 dried out taro rolls & 2 cardboard choking hazard bread. Prior to our food arriving our server was not too personable and seemed more interested in her other tables. It wasn't until we were almost done and wanted dessert did she seem to warm up. By this time it was too late to try and be nice. I was absolutely disgusted with the service that night. I used to frequent here because it didn't matter if you were local or visiting. You were given superb service. But not last week Saturday...The fairer skinned, light haired was given exceptional service. read more
