It's been awhile since I've been back to enjoy their mojitos and frites. I've frequented here many times and always felt comfortable and was given exceptional service. But after last week's visit...I may not go back. NEVER judge a person by the way they dress. The mister was in surf shorts and a t shirt & I was in jeans skirt w/a blouse. We were not drabby dressed or disheveled looking. Comfortably dressed. In fact, I saw many others dressed similar sitting in the bar area. I wanted a nice sit down early dinner with the mister since it's been awhile. (STRIKE ONE) It took more that 5 minutes to be acknowledged at the hostess stand. Not one person smiled or mentioned that someone would be with us in a moment. Even the employees that were huddled at the bar seen us...I made contact with a few. No one acknowledge us. They seemed too busy or occupied in their conversation. (HUGE STRIKE TWO) My server felt that she should serve and give fantastic service those that was dressed nicely & seated AFTER me. There was only ONE other party seated in the section we were in prior to us arriving and the other was seated about 10 minutes after we sat. She decided to serve the party that seated after us before us. It took her 15 minutes since we sat to finally acknowledge us & take our drink orders. She was about to step away I mentioned we were ready to order our food also...her answer..."Oh...I didn't think you were ready." After 15 minutes of sitting, yes we were ready. (STRIKE THREE) Our order consisted of 3 tapas & an entree. My boyfriend just wanted tapas (calamari, clams & mussles in white wine and frites). I was hungry for their linguine el fungi with chicken. The frites sat awhile on the warmer, the clams and mussles were rubbery & the calamari was soggy-ish. This meant it was made & sat on the warmer for a bit before arriving at our table. While I witnessed bread baskets passed by we were never offered. Once my entree arrived I asked our server if I had a bread arriving. "Oh... you wanted bread? Ok" While everyone else got a full basked. I got a basket with 2 dried out taro rolls & 2 cardboard choking hazard bread. Prior to our food arriving our server was not too personable and seemed more interested in her other tables. It wasn't until we were almost done and wanted dessert did she seem to warm up. By this time it was too late to try and be nice. I was absolutely disgusted with the service that night. I used to frequent here because it didn't matter if you were local or visiting. You were given superb service. But not last week Saturday...The fairer skinned, light haired was given exceptional service. read more

Came here on a recommendation from locals as I am from O'ahu. Came with a colleague for an early dinner and had a light salad and dessert. Service was kind and quick. So was the food. This review should come with context: Maui does not have a lot of options for Italian/Mediterranean fine dining. So I will write two separate reviews here. For the tourist visiting Maui: If you are from a relatively large community on the mainland that has lots of Italian offerings, you can probably skip this place unless you are absolutely craving Italian. You can almost certainly get better at home, and Hawai'i has an amazing and unique food culture you should check out while here. For the Maui resident: This is the best Italian I have had on the island, and the prices were high but fair for what was served. This is a solid choice for a nice date night. My linguine and clams was cooked well and was a big win, but my caesar salad clearly had some old and disappointing lettuce - not devastatingly gross, but also not what I hoped for from a restaurant like this. It seemed like the lettuce came from a bag. They also had some really nice, affordable wine and cocktail choices, which is a rare treat for Maui. read more

Wonderful experience every time I've been here. They have a great Happy Hour! I called the day of for a reservation for early dinner with some Friends and it was no problem. We were seated at a lovely window table for four. Our beautiful server was very attentive and made great suggestions. We ordered a bottle of wine and shared Seared Scallops, Steamed Butter Garlic Clams/Mussels and a Lobster/Shrimp Salad. Everything was excellent!! I'll be back! I have eaten at the Casanova in Makawao and it has always been a really good dining experience. This was the first time my husband and I had dinner at the restaurant in Kahului. Appetizer and my husband's meal were delicious, but my meal, lobster tail on a bed of spaghetti, was really disappointing. I thought I'd get a normal size lobster tail. It was tiny, on a huge bed of spaghetti. I was truly disappointed...I was hoping for more protein, and this was maybe two ounces. The manager asked if there was anything else I would like to make it better. She suggested scallops. I accepted. They were probably the most boring scallops I'd ever eaten...and we were charged $16 for them! Am I crazy? The few times I've sent food back, managers have always replaced the meal without charging me. I complained to the manager. She was not at all conciliatory. "There was nothing wrong with your meal!" I suggested the next time she offers to "make it right" that she warn people they'll be charged! I was furious. It is now the next day and I have calmed. I called the restaurant to apologize for upsetting the lovely and kind waitress. I spoke to the owner and apologized and he also was apologetic that this happened. I am chalking this up to a full moon experience, and look forward to returning to the restaurant for an excellent meal. read more

Came here for the first time and tried the Linguine ai Funghi, basically mushroom linguine. I personally love mushrooms so this dish was more than delicious. It had mushroom in every bite along with the taste in the sauce. Would recommend and get again!!! Also would recommend getting the tiramisu, very decadent but super tasty. read more

How was today the first time I found out about this place?! We got takeout for my 25th birthday lunch. We got the Fettuccine Agnello, calamari, and Greek burger. The two mains were amazing but the calamari left something to be desired. I also just have high standards for calamari. I wish there were like red onions on it and just more flavour in general. I bet they taste better when eaten right away, as they were just warm by the time we got home with our food. So I docked one point for that. The staff seemed nice. I think it was the owner that called me to let me know my order was ready and waiting for me, but when he brought it to me, his mask was down under his chin so it made me feel good about not eating in.... The fettuccine was great, I've never had lamb shoulder in pasta before! More places should do that. But let me put you on that Greek burger! So simple (brioche bun, lamb patty, spinach and pickled onions), but SO DELICIOUS! I think they put garlic butter on the brioche bun, plus the juices from the lamb also seep into the bun a little bit. The flavours were just so amazing, and the fries has a great texture. The price wasn't bad also at $15 for the burger. Will definitely come back because that burger was so good! read more

This place has fallen from grace. Terrible service. Jill the hostess extremely condescending and rude. No idea why she is still employed. I've actually witnessed her turn good people with reservations away for what seems to be racial profiling. It's awful. Been a problem for some time. We used to frequent this place for lunch (when Jill isn't present), but too much staff turnover, inconsistent food quality and Jill have stopped us from eating here at all anymore. We thought once the owner sold his upcountry version, the Kahului locale would get more attention and at least employ solid folks, but alas Jill is a testament to the opposite occurring. As much as I love the Italian food, the service by Pietro is by far the best part of Bistro Cassanova. I always love the angel hair pasta with spinach and of course the tiramisu. But having a waiter like Pietro who attends to your every need without really bothering you as you dine makes the experience 5 star. Always a fan! read more

Found this little gem on Yelp. My wife and I did not have a reservation but we went anyway. We were seated with in about 10 minutes. The decor was nice, elegant but understated, the tables were covered with crisp white tablecloths. A very nice touch. We ordered the piella to share. It came out piping hot in a large carbon steel pan. The rice was perfectly cooked in a saffron sauce as was the shrimp, scallops, chicken, mussels, clams and sausage. It was a truly memorable gastronomical experience. The portion was more than adequate for both of us. I'm going to go back before I head home. It was THAT good. read more

Bistro Casanova is the kind of place that makes you feel that you are in New York City, or Italy, rather than the middle of Maui. The vibe is clearly more local than tourist, and the staff is friendly and attentive. We were fortunate to have Pietro as our server. He has an old school expertise, seemingly knowing exactly when to come by for a chat, never interrupting, yet always maintaining a connection. One of us is allergic to shell fish, nuts and dairy so we didn't have ANY good options. Came in for lunch on thursday afternoon and it was mostly empty. Our waitress seemed like she really didnt want to be there although she exchanged the usual pleasantries. She asked if the senior member in our party wanted fries as his side and he replied yes. She brought out his food which came with barely a mouthful of salad greens, so we all promptly inquired, "sorry, I think he ordered fries, not a salad." She responded, "no he said GREENS, yes?" And walked away while smiling and nodding at him. It's a small mistake, but I would never expect the waitress to sound so condescending and argue against a mistake she made. Our poor friend even got confused himself and tentatively said "oh...maybe I did". (hes a bit older, so he tends to think he misspoke when this sort of thing happens ). Food was fine, nothing to rave about. But unless you happen to be in the area, I'd probably skip this place. Plenty of cheaper and friendlier restaurants on Maui. read more

Food was subpar. I ordered chicken parm which had a rubbery texture. Nothing we ordered tasted good. The service was absolutely horrible. The waitress was not attentive at all and I had to seek out service from other employees multiple times. I considered walking out several times but i tend to be much more patient than my wife, plus I didn't want to ruin the evening. This was a huge mistake and I regret putting my family through the experience. What bothered me the most is the lack of accountability from the staff when confronted with their issues. A really great place for a nice sitdown lunch or dinner in Kahului. Went there on Thursday night, and was surprised at how full and busy the restaurant was. Because of this they set us at a table that was not quite set up, so we did have to end up asking for napkins and cutlery, but our waitress was very prompt and apologetic about that. Otherwise the service was very good, and the food as well. Had the seafood and sausage paella which was more than enough for two of us so I ended up taking leftovers home. It's really nice to have anchovies with a Caesar salad and they provide them. The little cheesy bread twists that come before the meal are awesome. No complaints about dining here at this well-known and well respected restaurant. read more

Methinks not" after receiving this lovely compliment from Sharon M., a woman who is apparently so concerned with the yelp reviews of Bistro Casanova that she felt the need to write this to me: "Dear Selfabsorbed, Gosh it sure sounds like you had way to much time on your hands. I wonder how you make it through a day without enough time to rant about your Happy hour experience without the slightest regard for possible reasons you were so obviously disregarded as an important person at Happy Hour. Maybe next time you could save your iced down drinks and giving attitude for the homeless families that live in the beach park across the street. You never know it might be the toothpick guy." Yikes! I came here with my boyfriend before leaving for our flight back to Oahu. I was looking forward to it but was mainly disappointed. Pros: -the ambiance was nice and modern -the squid in pasta with salmon was the only thing I really enjoyed at this place. It had a lot of salmon that gave a good smokey flavor to the dish -if you check in and show you are leaving on a flight, you get a free dessert crepe Cons: -happy hour is until 6 and you can only order from that menu which sucks since we wanted something from the regular menu and had to wait 40 minutes until we could order it -the bus boy spilled the olive oil and balsamic vinegar when he picked up the plate and it splashed on us -the food was mediocre, the lamb appetizer was too gamey, the gnocchi didn't taste like gnocchi, the bread basket had a nice assortment of breads but nothing stood out, the strawberry crepe was just ok -overpriced for what you get Overall, I would not come back again and choose another restaurant to try. read more

I enjoy the convenient location of Bistro Casanova. I also love these things: lots of parking, good food and outdoor seating. The back parking lot is huge, so you'll never have to circle around trying to find a spot. That's a really nice perk on busy nights. The food is delish. I love pasta, so that's always what I order. Mmmm. Listen to this description of the Capellini Alla Checca: angel hair tossed with spinach, garlic, pine nuts, tomatoes and Parmesan shavings. Oh yes. So so Ono. And what I love about it is that it doesn't have a thick red sauce like most pastas. It's a very light, yet very filling. I am able to stuff myself for dinner, and take some home for lunch for the following day. Win:win They offer carafes of Mojito's and margaritas for happy hour! There is also a Yelp check in offer to nab a crepe. We got the Madonna: Strawberries, whipped cream, Marsala wine, Mascarpone cheese and drizzled with chocolate! What a perfect way to end the meal! Our server was great, very friendly and attentive. We sat outside enjoyed the nice, cool Maui breeze. Head on over and check them out in Kahului or Makawao. This place use to be one of the better places to eat on island. Not anymore. They need to restaff the kitchen and host/manager. The food that is coming out is so bad (on take-out), that I had to return more than once to ask for my money back. I gave these guys at least 3 times to make it right. I kept thinking that it was just that day, bad staff, or something. Didn't matter. The last time, I ordered pasta to go, picked it up still hot. I live 5 min away, opened it up and the pasta was unedible and very little sauce. I just thru it away and will NEVER go back. Word to the owner. Worst place ever. The bread was cold out food was tasteless and the juice I paid $6 for watered down. Overall bad experience they charged us $150 for food we didn't even eat. When the waitress took our order she asked if we wanted bread, we said yes but 30 minutes later still didn't have bread. Finally we flagged down the bus girl and had to ask for some. Bread was like warm and hard, butter just came out of the fridge and was hard Food wasn't good to say the least. Noodles were hard, lamb was dry and chewy. Sauce could have used some salt but nobody ever came to check on us so we didn't get to ask for any. The entire hour we were there, our waitress only came to our table 1 time, to take our order. The guy that seated us brought out our food. NOBODY checked on us the whole time, we had to flag down our waitress again for our check. Do yourself a favor and go to McDonald's down the street. It is hard to find good dinner places in Kahului. There are plenty of small local lunch places because of how many people work in Kahului but I would say its far harder to find good places open at night. I would highly recommend this restaurant after a long day of working, picking up guests the airport, doing costco runs, etc. We got a reservation for two on the same day (I would suggest getting a reservation). The spot is actually a little difficult to find, trust your google maps and then, after parking, walk past the bank and it is in that corner. I ordered the rigatoni carbonara on gluten free pasta. It was absolutely delicious. We also got the lamp chops as appetizers which were also very good and gluten free. I appreciated that the menu had gluten free pasta listed, I would have appreciated if they had which dishes specifically could be made gluten free (for example, some of the pasta dishes had to be modified some, no meatballs, etc.). Our waiter was very helpful however and checked with the kitchen for us. All in all, I really enjoyed my meal and will be back after busy days spent in Kahului. read more

The food was great, i really enjoyed the black linguini. It was a first for myself, and it was quite smokey and delicious. My boyfriend, Jordan, got the Paelo. The portion size is huge, as stated on the menu, its enough for two people. The only thing that disappointed him about the dish was the fact that a few components were over cooked (the chicken and scallops). On another note, our waitress (Trish) was terribly pretentious and quite rude. She seemed huffy and annoyed and our every request. Also, neither of us got a refill of water at any point during the night, which i found a bit odd. I like this place, and i hope to come back. This restaurant was a little bit difficult to locate but it is on the first floor of the bank (?) building near the intersection. We came here for dinner and had to wait a bit. There were 2 tables outside but I guess they weren't seating people there... they told us that the wait was going to be 40 minutes but it only ended up being 20 minutes, woohoo! The bread basket here consists of breadsticks, focaccia (I think), and dinner rolls. There's also bread for $3 on the menu, but I'm not sure what that is... they refilled our bread a few times so I don't really see why you would order bread in addition to that. The servers were all super friendly and nice, but the food comes out kind of slowly. Carbonara - Pasta was overcooked and not al dente. Sauce and flavor were good though. Lots of bacon :) Black Linguini w/ Smoked Salmon - Interesting because it was also topped with tobiko. Again, good flavors and lots of salmon, but pasta was overcooked. Paella - My favorite of the night! It was huge, perhaps enough for 3 people? Tons of rice and they do not skimp on the proteins. Banana Nutella Crepe - Got it for free through the check in offer. This place is a "go to" favorite of mine. I love how pretty the inside looks and often use this place as a restaurant for special gatherings with friends (before COVID). They give free tirimisu for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays. The food is ono too! A little on the pricey side, but worth it if it's every once in a while. My favorites are the angel hair pasta with shrimp, or the squid in pasta with salmon. read more

The dessert crepes are wonderful too; we liked the crepe Suzette and crepe Madonna. My favorite aspect is the locally-grown food they feature. I was soooo excited to come here for the food a few weeks ago, but terribly disappointed. When we walked in, we were asked if we'd like to sit outside or at the bar. Me and my partner looked at each other for maybe 3 seconds before the hostess just.. walked away. Okay? When she came back, we were seated at the bar, where the bar tender did not greet us and had a terrible attitude. Seriously. Not even a hello for at least 10 minutes. When we were finally notices, her demeanor was very unfriendly, and she could not be bothered. Our drinks and tapas took a long time, then they were put down hard on the table and she quickly turned away without speaking to us once again. The entire experience was just weird. This bartender was preoccupied with her cellphone, Starbucks, and dropped the lid for a garnish bin on the ground, then put it back on without washing. Bistro has gone downhill since I've last been here, and the food wasn't good, but I'm more disappointed by the awful service. read more
