Growing up, my mom made a dish called scalloped potatoes for special occasions. My sister and I would carefully compare each other's portions and fight over leftovers - tears were spilled, hair might have been pulled. When my sis and I were in Paris last week, we heard about this gratin spot and given our mutual love for the potato cheesey goodness, had to visit. The bistro was amazing - the waitress was one of the nicest servers we have ever come across, and the menu had sandwiches, salads and of course several varieties of gratin. The dish came steaming hot, fresh and smelling like heaven- it was so good, we ate the entire thing. The waitress had her iPod hooked up and the playlist was so bomb, we had her take photos of her screen so we could listen to all the songs later! They also had picon biere, which was a bonus. We came here late in the evening after doing a sunset cruise, and had an amazing time. We had lots of wine and great food, plus the people working at this place were really pleasant. It seemed like a great French experience, as lots of the other people at this place so late at night were French speaking and just out with friends, so it had a great atmosphere (not too touristy). The food itself was delicious (although heavy), and I have a pic of the gratin and the meat and cheese platter. I would 1000% recommend these, especially the meat and cheese! There really is nothing like French charcuterie :) The dessert was a bit of a letdown though, so I wouldn't recommend it. Location was perfect for a stroll along the Seine afterwards too. Ambiance - The ambiance is really lovely and that's what makes this place. The service is very friendly and the music is cool. Because the bistro is so highly rated on Yelp (the app isn't used widely in France) the restaurant is absolutely teeming with Americans so don't come here if you're looking for an authentic Parisian experience. The tables are close together, as per the usual in Paris. The main server was a British guy who is also fluent in French so could converse easily with all the natives (maybe one couple?) and English speaking tourists (everyone else). I imagine the reason this place is so highly rated on Yelp is because it is so easy to navigate for tourists because of this lovely dude. Food - The Paysan (lardons and eggs) was considerably better than the Fermier (chicken). Luckily mum asked to switch halfway through so I got to eat half of her Paysan gratin. If I'd ended up eating just the Fermier I think I would have been a little disappointed? Don't get me wrong the gratins are lovely but it's Paris... and it's potato and cheese and the end of the day. The place was great and I am here contributing to that reputation by giving it 5 stars because the people were lovely, but does the food really deserve such a ridiculous number of five star reviews and consequential acclaim? Probably not when really you can get food that is just as good at the local bistro that doesn't even have a website let alone a Yelp page. read more

This place is great for potato and cheese lovers. Come here for the potato cream and cheese dishes, not for anything else. We ordered the salmon salad as well and that was a mistake. Other than that, the smell of garlic and cream will induce you to step in and take a seat. During the day, you'll get the lady owner doesn't speak English and will be curt with you so try to at least speak some french. At night, you'll get a young and friendlier male server. Tip: go for lunch during the day instead of dinner if you don't have reservations. This place is small with 4-5 tables inside and another 3-4 small tables outside for people watchers. read more

There's a lot of the menu but it's a big mistake not to order their specialty: Au Gratin. These aren't your mom's "Cheesy Potatoes" or even your bougie aunt's Au Gratin. What the chef creates here is miraculous. Pair it with their recommended wine. I personally ordered the Chicken Au Gratin. It's within walking distance of St. Michel metro stop. The restaurant is a bit small and intimate so you may have to wait if you have a party bigger than four. As a solo traveler, I was seated immediately. The wait is worth it for the food alone but if that's not enough to get you the price should. Everything here is at least half the price of the overpriced corner bistros geared for tourists. My only complaint is that I felt I needed a bit of salt with the dish but the porpotion of cheese defintely made up for that. read more

I traveled across the Atlantic for my daughter's 21st Birthday and couldn't wait for her to try this place! The food and service was excellent the last time I was in Paris, February 2020. Unfortunately now it was the WORST experience of our trip. After a short walk from visiting the Louvre that morning we had an appetite for Augratin. We walked into the restaurant, and saw all the tables outside which were unoccupied and many tables inside as well. When we greeted the host, he asked if we had a reservation which we did not as last time there wasn't a problem getting a table without a reservation. He was conversing with a woman (the boss?) who looked angry, upset & tired. He was gesturing to a table and she was arguing with him. Other customers were looking at us, wide eyed and embarrassed as we were. It was so rude. How sad that I've been showing my daughter how wonderful and warm the people of Paris could be and this experience showed her the opposite. I've told many people of this place since my first visit, I won't be recommending it anymore. read more

Cheese gratin, in various varieties- either chicken, pork, salmon, etc with potatoes, was the meal de jour. Too bland for my taste. Added salt, but it is what it is. Had to say, the service was too slow (so this is usual for France, unlike the US) but the sweet server, a truly happy, smiling gentleman made the experience worthwhile. Super small cafe that specializes in Au Gratin. They have different kinds... I had without the smoked duck and they charged 2 euros less. It took about 30 mins for my dish to arrive but you're in Paris and it comes out HOT AND CREAMY AND BUBBLING. I had to add a lil salt to bring out the flavour. The recipe called for garlic and I'm not sure I tasted any. The staff is nice. The ground and bar appears it hasnt been cleaned since the 1800s. I get wanting to keep a classic ambience but GOD DAMN!! I dont need to see antique dirt!!! Check the pics... Came there on a Monday at noon, 12:00PM with a posted opening time at 10:00AM. As soon as I walked through the door, I see the female worker shooing another guest out the door. I asked if I my guest and I could be seated and was given a wave away and told to return in 30 minutes. Score: 8/10 -Smoked salmon with toasted bread and salad: a massive amount of salmon given with little bread. The salmon was a little grey and did not appear fresh. Score: 6/10 -Duck (landais) Gratin: this was decent. there was duck brest that provided the salt but the gratin was pretty bland. Had better elsewhere. Score: 6/10 -Service: terrible, the lady was rude from beginning to end. She even tossed the receipt to me at the end. Wow. I am not a fan of cheese. Let me repeat, I'm not a fan of cheese. However, this cozy restaurant by the Seine is some of the best French Food I've had. They were so creamy, so full of cheese, so perfectly cooked and so filling on a cold November day. I'm not sure if this is the place to come too in the summer because it is definitely a "comfort food place" - but my food was so good I'd find a way to get over it. If you in Paris on a cold day, this 100% is the place for you. The wait for the food was long and the place is small, but any wait you have to do is worth it - just be prepared. Good food takes time. If possible, don't come here with more than one person so you'll have an easier time getting a table. I ate here by myself and it was great because I was able to get seated right away. Full of flavor and one of the best dishes I've had while visiting Paris. The only reason why 4 instead of 5 was just the lack customer service. We first showed up during hours (4pm) and they turned us away and said come back in an hour. We came back in 70 min and she seemed annoyed we were back she seated and ignored us for 20 min. Saw great reviews about this place but was totally bummed with the experience we had and would not recommend visiting. Food was not good (stay far away from the bruschetta - it's just a sad piece of toast) but what was more disappointing was the service. We were seated right away but there were flies everywhere & our server seemed bothered whenever we asked for something basic. Our server didn't communicate with us at all which we thought was a language barrier, but when he walked back to the bar to flirt with a patron we realized he was Australian and could speak perfect English, so he was just plain ignoring us. Our meal took more than an hour to make which would have been fine if our server & the chef (the only 2 people working) hadn't taken at least 3 shots of vodka while we were waiting, and they turned away at least 3 groups of people while the two tables next to us remained empty for the entire night (there are only about 12 in the whole place). TL;DR: save your money & go somewhere with better food and reasonable service because this place stinks. read more

While our home is Seattle, Paris (France) is our "happy place." We actually have an apartment in Chantilly and make frequent day trips to Paris. Bistro des Augustins is THE one restaurant that we make sure to visit at least once every time we're in town. The gratin dishes are simple but incredibly tasty. Add a cold large beer and you have a satisfying meal for roughly $15. It's located just off the Seines; close to Notre Dame. It's small and usually busy but they do take reservations. Casual. Stopped in for lunch after a visit at Louvre so we were starving. Looked up this place on Yelp and it got good reviews, although we were hesitant that it wouldn't be good since it is in a tourist area. Our worries were unfounded. We got a table outside at 1pm on Sunday easily but it filled up quickly and after people were getting turned away. The menu featured potato gratin casseroles and some sandwiches. I enjoyed the Payson, potatoes gratin with cheese, lardon (bacon) and egg. It was delicious. I justified the extra rich lunch with the many steps I took observing the largest museum in the Western world. Wife had a tartine, open faced ham & cheese sandwich over salad. Popped in to this tiny bistrot during our walk along the Seine and absolutely loved everything about it - such an authentic experience and delicious food!! My five year old son, best friend and I sat inside and we're greeted by the owner who took prompt care of us. We had one of the amazing cheesey gratins which take a while to make, but are so worth it! And we had the Neptune - a salmon salad that was so fresh and delicious it rivals anything I've had in Seattle! The space was quaint and charming with a beautiful old wooden bar, worn plaster walls and a beautiful espresso machine. I just happened upon this place later in the evening after a long, cold day. My husband and I decided to split a gratin, fearing that while delicious, it would be far to heavy and rich to each get one of our own. WRONG! I'm not sure how something with potatoes, cream and cheese could be so light, but it was. We chose the veggie one and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals during a two week vacation. Another location I found through Yelp. When we got to the place, not what I was expecting at all. Thought it was a "real" restaurant, but really a little local hole in the wall establishment. I was a little hesitant about going in, but we did...the waiter/bar tender was very nice (despite the typical slow service). We went for the gratin and we got the gratin and it was delicious! We ordered the Nordique (smoked salmon) and the Bistro (bacon). Pretty much licked our plates clean. The smoked salmon was really fresh, tasty, and something I didn't expect in gratin. Despite being on the touristy side of the swine, within sight of Notre Dame cathedral, this is an unpretentious and friendly spot for a good meal. We started with a gin fizz (IK) and a 'spicy gin fizz' (better) and followed with tartines (cheese on toast with a small green salad) one with smoked salmon (particularly tasty) and one with ham (good, too.) One gratin can easily serve two people. We also ordered the roasts that consisted of cheese and tomatoes atop a salad. The toasts were OK.
