Went here for dinner. They give you roasted carrot on bruschetta. It was excellent. Next we had the tapas plate which had house cured olives, goat cheese, artichoke hearts, roasted peppers, and pate with carmelized onions. Then the spinach gnocchi with is the best that I've had in years. They were super light in a cheese sauce, I loved them. Then we had the mussels and the pork cheek and finished with profiteroles. We visit PG every year for a month's stay. Bistro Moulin was our go-to with every visit but sadly what was once a charming, intimate French bistro with impeccable food, wine and service has been replaced with new owners and a white walled, brightly lit restaurant, pretty good food and lousy service. Our server at the former Bistro would always remember us, what entrees and wine we ordered even after being gone for a. year! Last night at the new restaurant, we asked if there was bread and our server said "yes, we have bread but you have to ask for it." Oh. We should have taken that Mind Reading 101 course in school. We ordered wine by the glass which is served in their own little carafes and she promptly splashed each in the glasses spilling drops of red wine on a white tablecloth. Her service was cold and unattentive as if she wanted to be anywhere else but there. We ordered the French Onion soup. (good but not as great as before), Salade de Saison (boring) and the Canelloni (good). Maybe our experience would have been better if we didn't know what we were missing with the former charming, authentic and delicious French bistro where you were greeted by the owner, Didier, and his wonderful staff as if you were cherished friends. read more

Wow! Bistro Moulin not only met our expectations, but exceeded them. The restaurant is a very quaint bistro very much like being on a side street in Paris at your favorite restaurant. We started with French Onion Soup and the beet salad. The soup was one of the best I have ever tasted, and the beet salad was so fresh and delicious. We ordered the Mary's chicken and the Petrale Sole with a side of Pomme Frites. The depth of flavor in the dishes is amazing. You can taste everything in the dish. We finished with crème brûlée a lemon tart and an espresso. The desserts are the perfect ending to an amazing meal. Bistro Moulin is a gem among all the tourist restaurants that fall short. We came here last night at the end of a major conference in Monterrey. My boss and I were treating 10 clients to dinner that night. Everything was perfect. Because of our size, the restaurant gave us one side of the restaurant to ourselves. The wait staff was great and gave me an excellent wine recommendation for the event. The food was delicious, desserts were to die for. I even tried a port wine that was less than 20 years old and it was perfect with the chocolate mousse that I had for dessert. Bottom line -- everyone was happy here and we had a great time. The wait staff very attentive and catered to our every need. I would highly recommend this spot! If I am every back in Monterrey. I called a week before to make a reservation for 8 for my sisters Bridal Shower. I left a message and then later in the day they called me. The woman said that she would check with the manager and call me back if they couldn't accommodate. So I received no call back, which meant they kept my reservation. Fast forward to the date we asked and my whole party is dressed up for my sister. But they say there is no reservation. Very disappointed! Food, service, and ambiance- all effortlessly achieved. First coming in we looked obviously underdressed and the staff treated us no differently. I really value places like this because they can be so quick to judge that we aren't able to either pay or appreciate the food. The restaurant is very quaint and cozy with french decor. Vintage posters hung on the walls, roosters that are scattered among the plates which gave a country french feel. And I appreciate the kitchen placement because it gave a feel that the chefs care to see how the customer receives the food. The food was full of volume. The appetizers were my favorite. I had ordered the tapas and that was a good choice because of the variety in one plate. Everything was paired nicely with each other as well. For the main entrees we had the sea bass and the cannelloni tartufi. Me describing the food would not do it justice, so I'll stop there. Both dishes I would come back for and recommend to others. Lastly, I want to recognize our waitress Nicole and her wonderful hospitality as well as the other staff. You can really tell they all work together to make the customer feel welcomed and served. Residence and visitors of the Monterey Peninsula... Please, not please, you must dine at Bistro Moulin. This review is almost more of a dear John letter of restaurants in America. I have not yelped in a few years and I'm coming out of retirement out of respect for Bistro Moulin. 3rd visit in the las two years, Each visit; Filet with demi glace, so good.... Second best steak I have ever had in my life. Spinach Gnocchi, so flavorful you chuckle as you are eating them. Finished the meal with a fantastic crème Brule and espresso. Vino; Syrah - St. Joseph The staff also respects what they are serving and it shows in their service. By the way, they look like a staff/team. They are not some trendy tight shirt wearing food server that talks as were old pals and you can't recognize who works there. The techniques at BM are truly French, which is a dying art. Many modern cooks today grill a prime steak, top it with drizzle of olive oil & sea salt, yes, this makes for a good steak but anyone can replicate this at home. These clinical techniques are fading in American and the dining landscape has become more and more fast causal. To me, "fast casuals" means we are being fed by large corporations which is/has changed the dinning landscape of American. Now, they serve us with farmed fish from who knows where, sauces that are bottled in a factory, assembly lines to make sandwiches or burritos and buy large batches of wines for a better profits. None of that applies at MB, they have a hand selected wine list pared with top ingredients. Again, what they do it BM are techniques learned and handed down by great French chefs of years past. BM is in the heart of Cannery Row's tourist restaurants and there it stands quaintly as a mecca of French Cuisine that deserves to be savored... We had such an amazing evening! We had not been out to eat much because of Covid. Everything was perfect!! We both had the escargot and pink champagne. I had the filet that was cooked to perfection with whipped potatoes. My husband had the sloe. He said it was really good and asked if I wanted a "taste". I said no because he would have wanted a taste of mine and I didn't want to share. It was too tasty. I had the chocolate mousse and my husband had the cream brûlée. We had the moules frites, duck confit, sea bass, and osso bucco--everything was delicious! Good selections of wines to pair with the dishes. The take out was sooooo delicious. Tonight we started with a pate which was amazing and gnocchi. The gnocchi we cooked ourselves which came with instructions. It was very easy to follow. The pate was delicious and the gnocchi was like big puffed clouds melting in your mouth. We also took home a bottle of cotes de Provence Rose. Then for dinner we had the coq au vin which is a chicken in a red wine sauce...yum. For dessert we had the creme brûlée and tiramisu and both were delicious. A really cute, romantic place close to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I went here on a date! Seems to get a lot of business since their later hours were pretty booked, but we managed to get seated quickly since we beat the dinner rush. It was a little confusing what the menu items were, since neither of us knows a thing about French. Luckily, staff was really helpful and was able to give us detailed menu recommendations. I thought the service was overall phenomenal, and I even mentioned this to my date after the meal. However, I have to take off a few points since the first waitress we had did not wear a mask.We ordered the gnocchi as an appetizer, the mussels and cannoli as entrees. The dessert menu was enticing, but we were too full after the meal to order anything. Gnocchi - melted in my mouth! I thought the portion size was a little small, but it WAS an appetizer. The waitress told me that they were known for this dish, and I can see why. Mussels - the portion size was pretty good. They did give me a lot of mussels, and they all tasted pretty great. Cannoli- were cheesy, but good. Was a little too rich for my liking, and could barely finish it since I was so full. One of the entrees (not sure which) came with fries, and I'd say that they were pretty great fries. Overall, I thought the food was good, but I would visit again and order some other entrees. But we have been back a couple more times since the first time and it gets better every time. We will miss this place when we leave forsure. Again a 4.5. Moulin is a solid, reliable bistro that doesn't change much. The osso buco was excellent, with a proper marrow spoon (yes!) and an unusual fennel polenta. The Boeuf Bourguignon was very intense, but the meat and veggies have no addt'l salt so it all evens out. Skip the chocolate mousse (sweet dark chocolate, not our preferred CA bittersweet) for the tiramisu, which is unconventional but absolutely solid in technique and proportions. Too often tiramisu (yes, it's Italian but a lot of French chefs love Italian cooking just like the rest of us) is a fluffy waste of time, a mocha whipped cake of no substance and little interest. This is The Real Thing: housemade ladyfingers dipped in strong coffee; slathered with a 50-50 mascarpone/heavy whipped cream and lightly dusted with cocoa. Simple and exactly right! You'll never be impressed by a photo of Chef Dutertre's cannelloni or cider-braised pork cheeks. But you'll be very happy with the way it tastes...and in the end, that's the way food should be. read more

Just arrived from Tahoe where the food and service were lacking. The 5 star resort charged exorbitant prices for subpar food. Then we stopped in Monterey for a night and discovered this charming French bistro. So welcoming and the food was delicious! Finally, a wonderful meal prepared with skill and love! We dined on Coq Au Vin and Osso Buco which were so tasty, sauces were delicious. We chose a wine from an Oregon vintner which was a perfect compliment to our meal: 2018 Pinot from Elk Cove. We had not been to Monterey in years and were worried about the quality of restaurants given the staff shortages during Covid. The bartender at our hotel recommended Bistro Moulin and it was truly wonderful. We both had French Onion Soup as a starter. I was excellent. The cheese was wonderful and the spices were just right. My wife had Gnocchi Aux Epinards (Spinach Gnocchi) on the advice of the bartender and thought it was a marvelous dish. I had beef tenderloin cannelloni and I thought it was one of the better meals I had had in a while. The setting was nice, service great, it was overall much better than we expected. read more
